- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+56no thanks. I don't want nintendo to jack their price tenfold.
- DFENS, on 10/10/2007, -5/+38The accelerometer in the iPhone sounds like what Nintendo wants to add to the DS. Therefore, Apple is going to go after the gaming market.
Yeah. That's logical. /sarcasm
Best line from it:
Nintendo's new patent will likely bring about a modified Nintendo DS as opposed to an entire new system, especially since the DS has sold 26 million units worldwide. "It is far more likely that they will release a motion-sensitive version of the current DS so that it can interface with the Wii [home system] in creative ways," Porges says.
See that? it says they won't create a whole new system, then it says they'll create a whole new system! now THAT is writin' - Alegoo92, on 10/10/2007, -17/+41They cannot fight! They need to join forces.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23lol this is going to be a fanboy war of EPIC PROPORTIONS.
- brownspank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19No, Nipple.
- flamingmb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12I have never heard of the so called media darling that is the "iphon."
- fed359, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9"It is far more likely that they will release a motion-sensitive version of the current DS"
It is even more likely that Nintendo will just release a slot 2 based accessory that includes a motion sensor. They could also integrate motion sensing circuitry into a slot-1 game cart. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Nintendo and Apple definitely have their similarities but they are in no way competing. Apple tends to mostly ignore the gaming segment, and Nintendo isn't exactly going into the PC market. So, bury as inaccurate.
- MasterFunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8But what side will Digg take?!
- Dementual, on 01/27/2008, -0/+6Sure you have. It's the successor to the widely popular iPo.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6iphons are in many compound words, like anti-inflammatory. Between anti and inflammatory is the iphon.
- BlackTye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Since when did Apple become associated with gaming? Why would anyone think there is actual competition here?
- sanderscm2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4..To not give up the opportunity to sell more handhelds
- ronsta, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5whoa this article is way off. nintendo and apple do not stand to be competitors by using the same tech for video games. they're in different industries, simply stated, and the customer who will buy a $130 DS will not necessarily buy an iphone that costs several multiples more (and vice versa). the ds will continue to focus specifically on games while the iphone will most likely make a small foray into video games.
- toxicityj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6why would Nintendo lower itself to Apple's level?
- jjesusfreak01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4This whole argument is bunk. Cameras have had this technology for a couple of years (where tilting the device turns the screen orientation). Apple has nothing new here. Apple fanboys can digg me down now.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Actually, it reads fine. What they are saying is that instead of releasing a new handheld (not the DS) that they will be modifying the DS in some way. It doesnt specify wether it is an addon for existing DSes or a new flavor of DS, it just says it wont be the nintendo XE, etc.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They already have the shiney white color scheme down.
- TheHappyRobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I read iPron...
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3In 1995 when they designed the Apple Pippin. And after it failed so badly it made the Virtual Boy look like it sold better than the Wii they never tried again.
- jacobmiller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4lol
- JohnnyXmas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Does anyone remember the tilt sensor games for the PowerBooks?:
http://www.balooba.se/baloobasoftware/index.html
Weren't those out before the DS? Seriously, I'm not sure. Granted, the tilt sensor was not intended for gaming, and the games weren't made by Apple, but you get the drift. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2iWii, uWii, Wii all Wii for WiiWii?
>.> - Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Technically, even the Xbox360 does, the orientation of the rings of light changes based on its horizontal or vertical position.
- mediaphile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Nobody flocks to the PSP. That's why it's a failure.
- CaptMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, if there's one thing Nintendo doesn't do, it's update their handheld systems. Well, I mean other than the seven versions of the Gameboy... Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Light, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, GBA SP, GBA Micro. Did I leave any out? Updating the DS (again)? That's just crazy talk.
- maninblac1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2MEMS accelerometers come a dime a dozen, (not literally) but you get the point.
It's not the accelerometer, it's not even the device they put it in, it's how they use it. Neither company is looking to patent their "accelerometer" technology, they don't have any technology to have created, they both bought generic off the shelf ones from companies like Analog Devices. - Iwantawii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2much like those people who can't say "no" and always say "kind of, but not really"
- BigSax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You are correct. Toshiba was doing it in their TabletPC's even before that. None of it is new.
- coyote1284, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ok, crazybut
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Bally should sue both of them. didnt they invent "tilt" years and years ago on pinball :)
Using a bit of common electronics (motion sensor) to control another bit of common electronics (a display or whatever) should never be allowed in the patent office. - bigsim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"That sounds a lot like the motion-based accelerometer in this year's other media darling, the iPhone."
No, it doesn't. - Swarmie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Nintendo!
- narc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Nintendo!
- Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1if theres one thing that wont happen
its a cross duel between microsoft sony apple and nintendo - gumpy5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What the hell is this article talking about?
Even if any of those changes to the iPhone or DS are true, they're not meant to compete with one another, it's just an extension of their currently existing products. Nintendo already has accelerometers in the Wii, so the idea that they would put them in the DS because of the iPhone is ridiculous, considering their stance on how games are evolving. Apple on the other hand, already has games available on the iPod, so adding them to the iPhone is a logical step, since it acts a a fully featured iPod already.
The article is just trying to stir up controversy where there isn't any. - Ansible, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3It should be ok, because nintendo is patenting something with accelerometers and buttons. Apple is patenting something with accelerometers but no buttons. Clearly these are both incredible innovations that are totally completely different, not only from each other but from everything that has come before them. Awesome!
- mozmac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ummm, but the whole "tilt to change your view" stuff in the iPhone has been around for a while in digital cameras. My friend's Canon did it way before the iPhone. I love Nintendo and I love Apple. I guess you could call me a fanboy. However, Apple gets a lot of credit for stuff they didn't come up with.
- ahecht, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My 1997 Gyration mouse uses yaw rate sensors for pointing. My 2000 Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad had tilt sensors (http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Games/Roundups/tiltpad/). My 2002 Cannon SD100 had an orientation sensor. What ever happened to prior art?
- neseus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Nintendo moved to patent its tilt sensitivity on its best-selling portable system, Nintendo DS"
I could be wrong, but I don't think the DS has this technology on board... I know there were games for GBA that included tilt sensors in the cartridges, but as far as a tilt sensor in the DS, if its true why aren't there any games that employ that technology on the market today? - Pxtl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, but it's rare for a console to *partially* break compatibility. Any Advance game will play on any of the 3 advance handhelds, any DS game will play on any of the DS handhelds. The only exception is the Gameboy Colour/Gameboy jump.
- moolcool, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2the patent for the motion sensing hand held from Nintendo is OLD. It was for the old pokemon toys. and tilt sensitivity is different from full motion sensitivity, There is already an old game where you twist the handheld called warioware twisted. buried as inaccurate.
- daridave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2"I'm not sure if I agree" -- hahah ... that's anoher classic one...
Anyway, what a lame article. It's really as if the media and/or the fanboys WANT this to happen and are trying to find excuses to generate some tention... but come on... last time Apple tried gaming, we all knew how it went... I don't think it's in their plans for any time soon. They're busy kicking Windows' butt, let them keep on doing [what they do best]. - jnnycakes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Can you tell me where you got your cannon? I want one!
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Strictly speaking, the end effect of Apple's use of this technology is simply to know when the screen has been rotated - totally different than a full range tilt sensor use of the technology.
- Rileyper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1but its not the gloss white yet
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Can i play with uWii?
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Doesn't practically every random digital camera that's not completely low-end have an accelerometer built in....??
- sdlvx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1LOL Apple entering gaming arena.
ROFL. OMG. APPLE PIPPIN!!!!!!
Haha, but seriously, Apple has no chance. Firstoff, Apple tried gaming before, and they managed to top plenty of "worst game system of all times" lists. Touch screen buttons have been PROVEN not to work. Why? Because if you're playing ANY sort of serious game, you rest your hands on the buttons, and then press them when it's time. Everyone who has created some sort of strictly touch screen sort of control for a gaming device has failed, miserably. I'm not just talking, like "it was a good idea it just needed a little work", but "this is the worst ***** idea ever". The DS works, because it has BOTH. iPhone has NO useable buttons. It's going to have a bunch of power under the hood, and it's going to be reduced to idiotic games.
If Apple goes after Nintendo because of this patent, Apple can suck my balls.
1. Install OSX86 on an old dell with ***** intel parts.
2 install GCC.
3. exploit.
4. code
5. ????
6. profit. - KibibyteBrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Umm, try Japan or Europe. Do not assert that the trends in your neighborhood are the way it goes everywhere.
