- Hootyea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+278This is why I bought their album.
- Danofdeath, on 11/03/2007, -1/+174I think I might have to buy a CD for once...
- Roger, on 11/03/2007, -1/+164I bet they get a letter from the RIAA.
- kopimi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+162This is really cool of them - Big Ups to Trent!
- smartypants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+90Respect!
- brian1625, on 10/12/2007, -0/+84Yeah I bought the album too... Reverse psychology works.
But I was able to get a shirt and the album for 20 bucks. - indiepenguins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+83Not a huge fan of NIN but this is ***** dope.
- artofwar420, on 10/12/2007, -2/+78YAY!! LEGAL TORRENT MUSIC!! YAY NIN!
- coldfusion055, on 10/12/2007, -0/+65Year Zero was the first album i've actually bought in a long time because i respect so much what trent and co. have been doing lately.
- heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+65These aren't mp3s, they're multitrack files for use in Garageband/Ableton Live, so people can remix the tracks.
- bmc152006, on 10/12/2007, -1/+59you wont regret it, its damn good
- cr125er, on 10/12/2007, -3/+54This is a perfect example of a band in control of their *****.
- WiFiSPY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+49 Linky to garageband downloads on the nin site: http://www.nin.com/current/index.html
- tim507, on 10/12/2007, -2/+47Trent Reznor is pretty much the man.
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38i hope the RIAA execs are making brown stains in their panties...
- kidd3ckz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40I kinda feel bad for downloading it a long time ago....
I'll delete it and download this version because it might have some digital signature that makes me a better person. - stephensoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36Booyakasha! Very cool indeed. This should show the RIAA that tons of people will still buy it even though it's free, like they give a ***** anyway I guess.
- CriX, on 10/12/2007, -9/+45This is a smart economic move for Reznor. He gains popularity amongst kids for the ever-popular "***** the man" sentiment (especially giving to Pirate Bay as opposed to distributing for free solely from his website), generates wide-spread highly-positive free press, ensures that his music is out there maximizing the size of the audience that will be interested next time they hear of some NIN news.
This is my take as the 27 yo "old man" that I apparently am when posting on Digg. Renzor can do this ***** because he's already made his money. He doesn't like you. He's not doing this to be nice. He's doing this for himself.... which is what people do.
I've already bought the CD ... I'm old-school. - Hootyea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36I saw their songs on their site, listened to 'em a few times, then bought the album off amazon. Before it showed up, I had torrented the album (obviously ripped from their site), and listened to the songs a bunch of time.
We're in a new paradigm. We aren't buying for access to music anymore. We're buying to support the bands. This is support-worthy. - fluxion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36seems like all they're really doing is saving bandwidth by releasing them as torrents, i.e. using torrents for the intended purpose: distributed bandwidth.
but whether this was political, or simply practical, NIN still deserves props for giving us free material, and for kicking ass in general. - coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34I suddenly have a glaringly massive respect for Trent and NIN. Way to stuck it to the RIAA.
Oh yeah... ***** The RIAA! - moonmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35I listened to this and within 5 minutes my sister called me to tell me she was a lesbian... coincidence?
- TiKoZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32Okay.. they're REALLY going after the internet crowd.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Whether you are into NIN or not, you gotta admit... Trent is legendary.
Like Sabbath, Beatles, and Zeppelin back in the 60's/70's ... NIN will definitely stand the test of time.
In making statements, releasing great work, and doing innovative things that other bands could never dream of.
Plus you know you're good when Johnny Cash covers your work.
That aside, Year Zero is some damn good stuff. It's like interactive music when you start connecting it with the arg. You can hear the songs by themselves, but if you know the story behind them (for example, The Presence and The Warning), it gives it much more of a meaning. Plus that ***** hand coming from the sky is goddamn brilliant, mysterious, and creepy. Great idea! - RatTrap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32***** THE RIAA.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26What do you say now, Lars Ulrich?
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Alright, I know I said in the past that I wasn't going to buy this CD unless NIN sued the RIAA for going after people that downloaded parts of Year Zero via P2P that they themselves let loose. Screw that, I just ordered the CD from Amazon.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22You realize you can just say "*****" right? It's not filtered or anything.
- WiZZLa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18also on the site ( http://www.nin.com/current/index.html ) the link for torrents says "**via torrents you certainly know how to use" :)
side note, Trent Reznor has also done some production work with Jakalope: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakalope - cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24oh no they didn't!!
O_O - brian1625, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Well at least you can say you own the raw .wav format, which actually matters because Trent is all over the audio spectrum.
- gnomon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Blasphemy! Buy into the viral marketing, consumer!
- iancgi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the beginning of the end of the record industry and a new hope for intelligent, inspiring, and insightful music.
- GirSaysDoom13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12hmm... isn't the expression "going against the grain"? if they were going with the grain, then everybody would be uploading their songs on piratesbay.
- waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I just gained some major respect for NIN.
- dosterm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@crix
I dunno. It looked like a cynical move to me at first too. But the more I think about it, it seems like this is really what it appears to be: someone giving his art out freely and openly. If he makes more sales by giving it away, then yeah, that works to his benefit, ironically. But there are no guarantees. I'm glad he's doing what he's doing. It's not like he's telling anyone else what to do, either. It's what works for where he's at on this album. If we're too cynical about it, it's damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't. Let's just let him give away his stuff and be thankful. If it wasn't good, I doubt we'd give a crap. We're free to ignore all of this. So he can't be too cold and calculating about it. He still has to create an album worth listening to.
This is unrelated, but all the websites related to the album aren't marketing, like every damn review calls them. They are part of the story of the album. The lyrics are really just quick survey of the surrounding story. I don't get why music reviewers can't get it through their damn heads that something new might have happened here besides marketing. It's a way of expanding the story in a format that wouldn't fit into liner notes.
Anyway. Thanks, Trent. I'm gonna pull these songs apart and give the details a listen. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Everyone already is.. just generally not the copyright owners
- ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Here's a torrent: http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3674009/Nine_Inch_Nails_-_Capital_G_multitrack_audio_files
- ventro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I just bought the album today, it's awesome and the packaging is mind-blowing
- hollowex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I don't understand why I'm dugg down. The hand motif also appeared on the fragile
"Look out my window what do I see
A crack in the sky and a hand reaching down to me
All the nightmares came today
And it looks as though theyre here to stay" - bowie
"The clouds will part and the sky cracks open
And God himself will reach his ***** arm through
Just to push you down
Just to hold you down" - reznor - lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The sales of this album are exceptionally good.
- Photokon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10already bought the CD before this because Trent and NIN are just so damn awesome. I have a ton of their albums
- spacey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@crix -
As someone who's even older than you (and shares your sentiment about feeling 'old' on digg) - I think you're taking a too cynical view on this. What Trent and NIN are doing IS groundbreaking. If other major artists follow in his footsteps, it's the consumers who win. Yes, record labels will profit as well, but in a way that benefits everyone, not just them. - DephexTwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8wtf?? I don't know why, but that was hilarious...
- CriX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@ spacey and others
No, no... I didn't mean to sound so critical of it. I realized that I may have after I had already submitted.
It *is* groundbreaking and total props to him for being so progressive and creative in his advertising strategy. A CD with heat-sensitive paint? How cool is that? All these Internet clues and memory sticks in bathrooms... that's way cool. Like I said, I bought the CD. I like the guy and his music and his art.
I was wondering to myself though, "Would this be news as it is today if we hadn't gone through the vilification of evil, corporate Metallica and the Napster legal ordeals?" Hmm... it probably would be news but the uploading to Pirate Bay has *got* to have a component to it that cashes in on its very audacity. No *****, right? I mean, it is a relatively well-Dugg front page story.
Hasn't the whole album been available on thepiratebay.org for a long ass time now anyway? This is pure marketing and playing towards customer allegiances. - nathanwalker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@dfick
That's cause your goofy. - rinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7First album I've bought in ages.
- spacey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Similar to the others, I too have purchased the latest NIN CD, primarily because of what Trent has done lately. My level of respect for him has skyrocketed over the last few weeks.
- shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Why does this make me want to buy the album? I had no interest until I heard about how cool NIN is being. I guess I feel as if they deserve it more.
- EllasIsKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's no fun downloading music illegally if its just given to you......I guess I'll just have to buy it. Very commendable Trent!
