relying on a connection provided by a different company is a bad idea.
its just a reincarnation of the "software as a service" scam. - samukalra, on 05/10/2009, -1/+9FLYING NIMBUSSS!!!!
- enjourni, on 05/10/2009, -0/+4Cloud computing is a fad. As soon as some big profile company screws up and loses/sells/exploits all your personal data, leaving you completely screwed, the media will have a field day and people will hunker back down into their good old hard drives.
Businesses will probably use it though, because they're pretty good at forcing their employees to use cheap crap (it's cheaper to outsource, blah blah.) - bagpulistu, on 05/10/2009, -0/+3I misread Nymphos ...

- wellstd1, on 05/10/2009, -0/+2Just wait for the Nimbus 3000.

- killdashnine, on 05/10/2009, -0/+1Anybody who's read speculative fiction knows it's coming but it has limits. Permutation City (Greg Egan) illustrates the "cloud" as a resource where you capture compute cycles at varying cost. Pretty cool, esp. for things you're not so concerned about losing control of.
It's curious to see organizations (like OnLive) thinking that it will herald a new advent in gaming, but reality is that the time-sensitive nature of video games will absolutely crush them. Cloud computing is not good for time-sensitive computation. - dserfaty, on 05/10/2009, -1/+2Wait... It seems to me that they're confusing Cloud Computing [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_computing ] and Grid computing [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grid_computing ]...
- MichaelCorleone, on 05/10/2009, -3/+4I thought the Nimbus was a broomstick.
- allothersnsused, on 05/10/2009, -0/+1I'll see your Nimbus and raise you a Firebolt
- Myztry, on 05/10/2009, -1/+1For once it's not the scam of referring to single instance remote computing as cloud computing.
The actual applications for cloud computing are going to be limited. Sure it's great to have a task running over x computers but few tasks are going to be suitable. The source data is going to need to be replicated to each machine. That's won't happen over a fast memory bus. It will transfer over (relatively) painfully slow networks. The data locally accessible on each machine will not be able to be dependent on data from other machines, or it will need to be synchronized. Again over painfully slow networks.
It would be useful for task like rendering 10,000 different frames of a CG movie. It would even be useful for crunching subsets of data (eg. you crack the 1st,2nd,3rd,etc bunch of encryption codes). But the same problem exists as for utilizing multi-core processors. Most tasks are not written and/or suited to distributed processing. Except the 'between' communication is painfully slow.
Even then, you need to ensure the source data is secure. Pixar doesn't want it's animation source sitting on 10,000 computers controlled by 10,000 different entities. And most importantly, the resultant data needs to come back. If it only exists in the cloud, then the cloud essentially owns it. It's becoming an increasingly common with server based applications to extort the client for monies if they wish to leave the service. The same risk applies here.
In many ways, cloud computing is irrelevant to the consumer as it will be transparent, except for the risk factors. - inactive, on 05/10/2009, -0/+0Reading this title caused the Nimbus Land music from SMRPG to get stuck in my head.
- inactive, on 05/10/2009, -1/+0Head asplode.
- bpwrinn, on 05/10/2009, -6/+3These would be funnier if I had a widescreen computer.
.. stupid old computer... - TechnoRabbit, on 05/10/2009, -12/+3They are never, never funny. They're a ***** copy and a paste. Simply that and nothing more. Copy and paste. They are annoying, they take up unnecessary space in the comments, and they're about as funny as any other canned joke... not very funny.
- Bobby1978, on 05/09/2009, -16/+2Cute name "Nimbus". Someones obviously a DBZ fan there.
