- cachete22, on 11/13/2007, -2/+43I want some Uber-Bandwidth dammit, and I want it now!
- MicahC, on 11/13/2007, -1/+18I wish Verizon would show some love in the areas they advertise FIOS! I'm in the DC Metro area and they've been advertising FIOS here for years and yet it's still unavailable.
- benitojuarez, on 11/13/2007, -5/+21I wish these ***** would show chicago some love.
- Typhoon2009, on 11/13/2007, -0/+15Someone needs to make a sort of "FiOS Tracker" website where you can see exactly what places Verizon offers FiOS, and at what speeds. I really would base my choices for a house or apartment based on what internet is available. I wouldn't touch Beverly Hills if it didn't have FiOS.
- Stevethegreat, on 11/13/2007, -1/+16Seed *****, seed!
- PATSCRU, on 11/13/2007, -0/+12gimme gimme gimme....The deal breaker would be privacy/throttling issues, i should hope that bandwidth like that doesn't come with any strings attached, but knowing telcos, i'm not holding my breath.
- Scabdates, on 11/13/2007, -2/+13Verizon doesn't throttle bandwidth, and I've never heard of users being spied on in anyway. In fact, I don't think Verizon forwards RIAA/MPAA letters to customers.
Verizon isn't perfect, but it's probably the only worthwhile ISP in the USA. - 4DFX, on 11/13/2007, -2/+12Don't wanna be rude, but... we get a lot more (up to 1gig symmetrically) than that in Slovenia (everyone who's heard of the country raise your hands)
http://www.t-2.net/?AUID=4DE65011E194120110C6 (€1 = $1.4698) - blackeye111, on 11/13/2007, -0/+9There is a nice map of availability at dslreports.com. It shows only locations that users have added, so it doesn't show exactly where the coverage is, but it gives you a general idea. They also have maps of other ISPs there too.
http://www.dslreports.com/gmaps/fios - subcomandante, on 11/13/2007, -0/+8Did you even read the damn description?!
- paul9290, on 11/13/2007, -0/+8Ummm Healthcare Web/Internet Developers hurry create those hungry bandwidth applications that will save our lives and spur the demand for this amount of bandwidth! I want to watch and down some HD video! Oh wait there isn't much on the web yet........
- xqb4dpx, on 11/13/2007, -0/+7HOW ABOUT UBER BANDWITH IN BROOKLYN PLEASE ... I"VE BEEN SEEING YOUR DAMN COMMERCIALS FOR MONTHS NOW, NYC AREA ENTIRELY CONNECTED? NO WAY. I CAN'T DOWNLOAD MY DAMN EZTV TORRENTS ANY FASTER UNTIL YOU GET YOUR RED ASSES BACK HERE! YOU MISSED A BOROUGH!
- dezertrat, on 11/13/2007, -0/+7http://stage6.divx.com/
- Dsn989, on 11/13/2007, -0/+7It's called bittorrent!
But if you're looking for legal hd content ABC has their online streaming HD section. There was one other place doing this, but I can't remember what... - stgben, on 11/13/2007, -2/+9From the article: "Right now Verizon is testing that in Pennsylvania, seeing peak rates of 400Mbps down and sustained rates of 200Mbps. 200Mbps. That's enough to make even the most hardened Tokyo resident jealous with their measly 100Mbps downstream fiber service."
- Flarble, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6yes! we should definitely halt all technological advances because it cannot be used to its full extent yet
- Humptydank, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5Everyone who's driven through Slovenia on their way from Opatija, Croatia to the Trieste Airport, raise your hand.
(hand)
If anyone on Digg wants to spend a total of thirty minutes driving in and then out of a country, I heartily recommend Slovenia. It's a beautiful thirty minutes. - mooninite, on 11/13/2007, -1/+620/20 isn't any good if you can't use it. Incoming ports 80 and 25 are blocked. You can't run legitimate web/smtp services.
Blocking those ports doesn't prevent spam, but idiot IT people think it does. - gravis86, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4Verizon doesn't throttle bandwidth. So you're safe. Actually, I think Comcast is the only one doing the throttling as of now.
- gavintlgold, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4Actually, I'm in NYC (bronx) and don't get even the basics, while my friend is in the suburbs and has the full FiOS package... damn!
- KLowD9x, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4Hell, I have cable now and when I move into my new house, I will be back to dial up.
Those of you complaining about not having a 100mbit connection need to learn to appreciate what you have now. - vheissu, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4Count your blessings, you could be stuck with AT&T and U-Verse (What a joke).
- mckirkus, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4If you can't host a website with it and BitTorrent is capped what's the point? Although with 20Mbits downstream you can do high def video on demand which would be nice.
- Traiklin, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3I wish I could just get the basic 50mb downstream version they offer but it's not available here...yet every Verizon store and place that offers Verizon advertises it like crazy which pisses me off.
- Chicken, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3don't they block 80 because they don't want you to make money off of your connection unless you have a business account?
- dezent, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3living in sweden, i got 100/100mbit.. its great ! i can watch dvds from my friends computer ( located 200km away) over smb or afp :)
- macromorgan, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3If Verizon isn't your ILEC don't expect to see Fios. Ever.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -4/+7The US is becoming a 3rd world country so dont expect much of this to happen.
BTW, I want to be wrong. - centran, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3We can't have fiber because our telecom company is too busy deciding what smaller companies they are going to split into and then when to reform into a giant to only split up again.
- tetsuwan, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2It appears anything more than 20/20 is pretty damn expensive. I pay €40 for 100/100 here.
- IllBeBack, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Dammit! The last time I called Verizon and asked, all they could tell me was that since they have a presence here that I'll eventually get it in my area. Eventually seems a lot like too long from now... Stuck with the damned cable company for now...
- cocokr1sp, on 11/13/2007, -1/+3Get ready to be flamed by the cable company fan boys :/ little do they realize their "Advanced Fiber Network" is just fiber to the node and from there coax out, which of course has a very limited bandwidth. Seems like Verizon is the only one doing this thing right and not being lazy or trying to save money (for once haha). Just wait till HDTVs become the norm and everyone on the cable companies network is getting some ***** ass tv and internet cause that coax cant handle multi HDTV homes...
- screensnot, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Manhattan, Japan, whatever... Wake me up when I can get it in Metro Detroit.
- Firehed, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2How about they deploy it outside of places as densely populated as Manhattan so people in even fairly major cities can get a decent connection?
- NinjaNoodles, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Everyone be nice to people who you know seed and are privileged to these fat pipes in those areas ok. :) woo-hooo, I hope there are lots of seeders with this kinda connection in the near future!
- gavintlgold, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Let's hope they give me at least reasonable bandwidth. I have DSL, but it's slower than the slowest DSL they "offer" is. I'm not sure how it would be described, but when I'm downloading, the maximum I'm getting (and this is in NYC) is 32 kilobytes per second. It's really depressing, since my friend, who lives in the suburbs, has FiOS and can download, for instance, an Ubuntu CD in 17 minutes, whereas it takes me six hours to do so.
We have to use verizon since we don't want Optimum (we don't need to pay for cable TV, we don't watch TV). :( I wish I had better internet. - tetsuwan, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2lol, I could seed to a hundred guys like you, the only strain being on my hard drive.
- tbenathan, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2I have FiOS 50Mb/s here in Manhattan and I could not be happier with the service. It's a far better choice than the local cable company. 5Mb/s upload is all I need, personally, but I wouldn't complain if they upgraded services.
- antdude, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2And my area east of L.A. I am already in VZ area! No DSL (too far -- 20K ft.). :(
- thedaylights, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Anyone know when Canada is going to get some major *unthrottled* bandwidth? Right now the choice in Toronto is between Rogers (throttled) and Bell (throttled). And for my neighbourhood there is no choice - only Rogers is available.
- Jerky1312, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2I'm in Brooklyn and the ads are on all over television, radio and print, but its not even being offered here.
- darkNiGHTS, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2SBC Yahoo isn't bad either. They have the cheapest DSL around and is consistent and unthrottled.
- windohs, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2True that. I've had an ONT right outside my house for the last 4 months just sitting there wtf
- lime148, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2They dropped all the decent groups from alt.binaries, though.
- windohs, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Ah..the limitations of DSL. When I used to have it the distance caused me to get 1.5 Mb/s instead of the 3.0 Mb/s i was paying for. *kisses cablevisions feet for getting the full bandwith (even wirelessly)
- Humptydank, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Outer boroughs?
- Chandon, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Oh noes. If they were blocking other ports it might matter, but having to use an external email server and put your web server on port 443 just doesn't strike me as that big a deal.
- liquisoft, on 11/13/2007, -0/+220mb is nothing compared to 100mb, and even so I just know Verizon will happily charge everybody a ton of money for the privilege of using sub-par internet technology.
- flessa, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Ive had the FiOS 20/5 package for a while now and its excellent. This increase in bandwidth is really exciting for the future.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2uhh, i live in jersey and i dont even get dsl, let alone fios. im calling bs, at least for my area.
