"ya, I hate blog posts"
I'm going to explode. Get off my site you ignorant fools. Read the fricken article before saying anything. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Anyone else in Beta think the submitters and commenters were generally very leaning to the right? I know it's community driven... but the lot of em seemed republican / religious."
Just as Digg has been taken over with Microsoft zealots, Slashdot is filled with Mac zealots, Newsvine will be filled with Republican zealots, and SomethingAwful is filled with zealous zealots.
So is the way of the web. - flattmeister, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The blog was the one of the newsvine staff's blog. Not the posters. Get over it. And I have found the majority of newsvine to be liberal if you ask me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow, it actually does look impressive, like professional quality and all. No iPod non-news, no google non-news, no wallpaper site of the day... nope, I guess the digg masses haven't made it there yet, hahahaja :D
- iBookG4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This time a blog post is relevant to the story because it's blogged by the CEO of the company the Digg is about. Just wanted to point that out.
- reddit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Newsvine's layout is too cluttered.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hah - if you read the comments carefully and one by one you will see that the same group of users are the only ones saying newsvine is a great website, newsvine is the best and most of then were the private beta testers....go have a look at newsvine your self and tell me whats so special about it? nothing, its just another billboard, its faith will be the faith of flock....mark my words.
- zone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1im not feelin' the love.. looks kinda nice but overall, the content is not that interesting..
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digg focuses on tech. Newsvine is a bout more then just tech..
Keep in mind that the creator of espn.com owns newsvine.com.. Not some n00b webdesigner hoping to score some traffic off digg for his ads.
Newsvine is NOT another digg clone. It has certain similarities, but its going to be more of a competition towards yahoo news or google news rather then digg or slashdot. - rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been a beta tester for about a month there and I gotta say it is a very nice site. I primarily use it and Digg along with Google news. While I don't know that Newsvine is really a direct competitor to Digg, I found myself using Digg significantly less after I started using Newsvine - take that for what it is worth. I've always felt like the Digg concept should have linked articles, better comment section and a broader range of topics. It will be interesting to see how the community turns out to be for the site now that it is live though - that of course will be a big factor as to how useful the site is. No offense guys, but the Digg community leaves a little to be desired :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nice site! Congrats Newsvine!
- psbp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks great. but I will probably never leave digg.
- spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, I was looking forward to this. Is it me or is this design very cluttered? There's an overload of news!! Is there any order to the news? The reason I like digg is because the front page (usually) includes some relevant news. This seems to just be posting the most recent AP news... I can go to ap.org for that.
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0newsvine's layout is a litle too bloggy for me. if anything, i trust bloggers less.
- TGDuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RobotCitizen - Same thing happened to me. You can go into your profile and change your display name to the one you want and it should work if it is not really taken.
- MrsApril, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg = 14 year old boys who think linux is leet but dont know anything about it!
- xamox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's digg but with every version of news and waaaaaay more goid.
I'll stick with
http://www.shoutwire.com
much more user friendly - badminus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One thing that's always frustrated me about Digg is the emphasis on tech. Don't get me wrong, I love the tech stuff, but I can't be the only one who thinks limiting it to tech is a waste of potential.
Roll on Digg 2 encompassing all news! - Machine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where are the ads? Who's playing the bills?
- simd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice design. Still waiting for my confirmation email, but I assume they've a bit of a backlog.
News on the UK is very old - the result of the Lib Dem leadership election was 7 hours ago, but they're still headlining the "Who will win?" story. Meanwhile there's a story on whisky I read 3 days ago in the Scotsman. - wuleidando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sloooooooooooooooowwww
- c0d3b0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0servers must be getting slammed, im getting nowhere...i'll check back later
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0c0d3b0y said "servers must be getting slammed, im getting nowhere...i'll check back later"
good idea :D
Tomorrow it should be clear of the digg effect. They DO have multiple servers.. But then again digg.com has like 25 servers and just reffered alot of its traffic towards newsvine. But newsvine was working a few minutes ago. Newsvine can handle lots of traffic... - TheRebel88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"second of all: im jewish and i consider myself unreligious AND im democrat."
I'm sorry for you. - sygyzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RobotCitizen - That's the first bug I've found. I've found nuermous others, all of which stop me from registering or logging in. WTH? They should have doubled their beta cycle.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the cool thing about newsvine is that you get the actual stories that come out over the wire rather than with the major news outlets which give you the same stories after a few hours of lag or stories they want to drive to be news. also, it's the only news source i've found that actively tags wire stories.. so you can get a feed for a specific topic. it's very valuable. i don't use the seeds part as much as the wire, mainly because i hardly care what any of you will write and say is news. :)
- senfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should have gone live with a better sever and/or connection to the Internet. ;-)
- joliveira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah the site is now D-E-D, DEAD! Sucks because I'd love to poke around a bit.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Anyone else in Beta think the submitters and commenters were generally very leaning to the right? I know it's community driven... but the lot of em seemed republican / religious." - opnotic
No. Actually, The demographics of the beta testers turned out to be pretty even. While I tend to be mainly Libertarian-leaning, There were plenty of people on both the right and left sides of the spectrum. I think you're just used to having sites like Slashdot and Digg being populated mainly by hardcore lefties. When you find a site that actually has a more balanced demographic, you automatically think "Wow! This place is right-wing!" just because there happen to be more right-leaning voices than you're used to. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Netvibes.com >>>>> Newsvine - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0newsvine makes my opera crash ~o~ whyyyyyyy
- Johnbinarystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah yes the right wing echo machine with filters, woo hoo, forget it.
- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Easy Jesusphreak, Adverts ;p
I'm sure digg is making lots of dough through google already, especially keeping it exclusive as far as I know...
I know for sure if digg was accepting regular advert displays / impressions, I would contact digg to get my companies ad displayed for a while ;) - davatop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First impression of newsvine is not that good...
- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They need to get some massive servers and lots lots of bandwidth, Look at it crawl now ~o~
- StinkyPudding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Newsvine, been using it since they mentioned it on the Amber Podcast. Big Digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Slower than Cmas.
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not able to bring up the site. Wonder if it's temporarily hosed.
- lauridsd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not sure if its the Digg effect or what, but the newsvine site is as slow as molasses in january for me presently. Format and layout look pretty decent, and if they fix the speed issue and I can get an RSS feeed, I may replace Google news on my customized Google home page with Newsvine.
- ruimoura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And so The Digg vs Newsvine War Begins... everyone places your bets" ...
Thats has got to be the most stupid thing i've seen today ....
First Newsvine isn't like digg. Newsvine is all about news ( the word news means what it means) not just news and rumours about technologies and related (that's what is digg all about, or should be ... :|)
Btw when will "OMG HUGE COLECTION OF WALLPAPERS !!!" news be banned? Because digg is
getting like a kidies place to get wallpapers and free games ...
But there are allways great and really useful news, and that's what is saving digg by the moment ... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah man, I liked having a beta account
- timewarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Newswine is a good site but not usefull. The content is similar to google news and old news from digg.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"and old news from digg."
Give it 2 weeks.
It is still growing. Its not quite the size of digg in popularity yet. - mlarsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Anyone else in Beta think the submitters and commenters were generally very leaning to the right? I know it's community driven... but the lot of em seemed republican / religious."
No, I know that is is hard to believe, but 1/2 of the county is Republican, and more than 75% are religious. They are just not as vocal. It is the "Squeaky-wheel" thing. - sHARD>>, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And...it's down.
- airjrdn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, it's better than Del.icio.us, and look at it. Who knows.
- Mushroonaut, on 07/11/2008, -0/+0Not bad, abit slow for me, but will check it out from now on.
- Marlon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Come on guys, don't you think that when Kevin is done with Digg it will be a direct competitor?
BTW The seeding ease of use is a good idea
no digg...not a direct link - RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kevin Rose has said numerous times that he wants Digg to expand into other subject areas ang grow beyond the "geek culture" site it is now. He said it a couple of times on TWiT. So eventually Digg and Newsvine will be competitors.
I've already found a bug in NewsVine though. When I filled in the registration form it said my username was available, but when I hit Submit it said my username was taken. Damn! -
