- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Newsvine is like digg, if you are not one of the top users with dozens of buddies your submitted articles won't go anywhere and won't be read by anyone.
- RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Untrue. I am a Newsvine member, but certainly not a popular one. I've had many articles reach the front page (and I've even made a little money on those articles as well). I didn't need a ton of friends to reach the front page, nor did I have to pull any tricks out of my sleeve to do it.
Newsvine gives everyone a fair and sensible shot to be heard and noticed. I've been on digg.com longer than I've been on Newsvine, and I've yet to have anything promoted to the front page. Go figure. - thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Agree with Ronaldlewis, I am not an uber popular journalist, just a seeder, and I can regularly make the front page. All you need are to get a couple comments on your story, starting with your own to get it noticed by everyone. I've never had anything hit the frontpage here on Digg either. But Newsvine isn't about front page link seeding, its citizen journalism, not links to "OMFG TEHS HALO3 SCREENSHOTS ARE DA BOMB!!!11", the users are basically building the content of the news site either through AP/seeds(links)/or their own written articles. They can regularly beat the AP to news stories or coverage, the VT shootings for example, one of the users was a mile away and was posting up to the minute information no other outlet had. Call the site a very advanced version of Digg meets Slashdot but with the users in control.
- sskatygirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9To name just a few, DAweb and Adam Hobson are two popular conservatives at all. Newcomer Melody Pearl and several others from the NYT forum shut down are also conservatives, and they all do a very good job at keeping NV balanced. If you think its all about liberals, you must not use it much.
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+8More like "if the submitter was too lazy to link to it to begin with". Or at least put it in the summary so Linkification picks it up.
- Ulisses, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yes, but unlike digg, there are many reasons for 'friending' someone other than mutual digging. It really puts the 'social' back in social news.
- PeteZaHutt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Newsvine is great.
- thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I shouldn't forget that Newsvine is ad-revenue sharing, the more popular your articles are, the more you get back in $$. It encourages honest users and contributors.
- nsharp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Meh site but the story on how they got the domain is cool
http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2005/03/how-to-snatch-an-expiring-domain - LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm on newsvine, and the new version is pretty nifty.
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Exactly, cyberdork. I was an early user when Newsvine was in beta. Then it was easy to get content onto the "front" page and get comments, but after they went public their system couldn't give everybody a chance at the front. There were simply too many people. I posted a story about the problem which received some comments from the newsvine team, but they had no solutions. Posting became a popularity contest, but worse than digg, it was difficult to find unpopular stories. I gave up posting there and just focused on my blog. I had better feedback and results doing that.
I wish them luck with the changes, however. They certainly needed them. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I, too, have had good experiences with my writings being seen on Newsvine. I'm not sure if they ever reached the front page or not, but in the past month alone, I've had numerous votes on my columns, as well as dozens of comments from readers. I certainly am not the Top 20, but I don't feel like I'm "the rest" either.
Feel free to take a look yourself: http://davedrew.newsvine.com (Sorry if it seems spammy, I wouldn't have put the link in if I didn't think its data was relevant) - affinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I discovered newsvine through digg. I consider them very different and both digg and newsvine are part of the list of sites i check frequently. I've only glanced over the changes so I have yet to conclude whether they are good or bad. I hope newsvine blooms into the popularity they deserve.
- cnldelta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In 2 years, just about every updated website would be drag and drop for the UI (a la Netvibes)
- iCosti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice site for mass media research.
- EnderMB, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1There's only one thing I can say on the matter...
Newsvine beats the pants off of Digg. - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2ahh you changed your comment. now my reply doesn't make sense.
- vonralls, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2It should really be called "Liberal Newsvine."
- thesportoflife, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1qwerty
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2that's because newsvine is a digg clone made to look like a news site.
