- orukabir, on 10/10/2007, -1/+216Please, please, please let us open emails in new tabs.
- CBanga, on 10/10/2007, -4/+134Isn't the whole thing still in Beta?
- carmbrester, on 10/10/2007, -15/+108Why do you need a "trusted tester" to be able to translate anything into Pig Latin?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+99They can "test" all they want, but they better not ***** up and accidentally wipe my account.
- Vinvin, on 10/10/2007, -8/+86Looks reliable.
I do hope they will improve the speed because that's the only problem I have with Gmail: it can be so slow. Cool to see it's still being worked on though ;-) - iFungus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+62Not as slow as Yahoo Mail.
I hated watching little cartoons break dancing. - ChrisRo, on 10/10/2007, -6/+63It would be nice to see some Google Reader integration...that would be a home run.
- Neiby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+54Yes. It's apparently the longest beta period in the history of mankind. Seriously, it's been in "production" use by thousands of users for a couple of years now and it seems to work just fine. At what point does it come out of beta? I'm beginning to wonder if Google is leaving the beta tag on there just as some kind of weird joke.
- tracydanger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+53Of course it's still being worked on. It's only Beta.
- allyant, on 10/10/2007, -5/+56Because they need "New Version" translated we are assuming that there is going to be a new version of gmail, I for one would like to see more evidence than that.
- klovisskudgens, on 10/10/2007, -2/+52Or you'll do what.... Get mad, Maybe send them a nasty email... They're Google they can do what they want. They're like the Mafia.
- mlostracco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+47There may be a new version of Gmail, which sources say can be called a "New Version." Sources also claim "New Features," which will allegedly include new features. There will also be a new interface, which sources say can be described as a "New Interface."
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -9/+42I, for one, like like the current UI. Burying you... Now.
- andy29, on 10/10/2007, -4/+35"newer version"/"...to go to the newer UI"
Couldn't this be about anything? As much as I'd love a new version of Gmail, it could be a newer UI for organizing your web clips for all we know. Or is there more news that I've missed? - SiRwhilms, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27*Crosses fingers and hopes for IMAP*
The technical problem with IMAP is how to handle the archive, really. I don't really know how they'd solve that. - Hemingrubbish, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24i've found after the initial loading, gmail is very quick. especially with the appropriate greasemonkey tricks.
- R2Bacca, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22It's also free...
- pr1me4, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21i wanted it to stay in beta forever :(
- PhairOh, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22I don't understand how one can love Gmail but dislike the UI. As far as webmail goes, there's not a whole lot more to it other than the UI.
- NebCanuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20I think the Beta label is just Google's way of saying it's still a work in progress. It seems silly, but I guess technically until the program is made completely perfect, one could argue it's still a beta product!
- mason55, on 10/18/2007, -1/+19uhhh there is context:
TRANSLATE PHRASE FOR GMAIL UI:
Translation Help: Link that users can click on if they are part of the trusted tester program to go to the newer UI
so.. .this is obviously a link... to change to a new gmail user interface.... as long as you're a trusted tester. - brada33928, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22no screenshots, no verification, it doesn't exist!
- bradpurchase, on 06/12/2008, -0/+16They're trusted for a reason, duffsstuff...
- riah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14That's what versions are for!
- ElRayQuieres, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12http://www.google.com/intl/xx-piglatin/
- luchid, on 10/10/2007, -6/+17In Firefox you can shift+click a message to have it open in a new window, you can probably set firefox to have it open triggered spawned windows in a new tab.
- theShiba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11my "force new tab" setting doesn't seem to work for this...
- Ragzouken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Look two lines down.
- NebCanuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yeah. The old UI may be nothing new under the sun, but it offers great usability and has way better features than the other major e-mail servers. Gmail may not be fancy, but that's a major reason to like it!
- Boof, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10http://www.google.com/a
- D3koy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I hope they leave an option to keep "Gmail Classic" if the new version is not so great.....there is nothing I like less than when a company does a complete re-work and you don't like the way it looks/works anymore...
- imthe1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9ya i find that odd. are there people who only speak pig latin and therefore google needs to be able to translate for them. i'm fluent in gobbledie gook, i wonder if google needs help translating from english to, (what was it? oh ya!) gobbledie gook.
- peaceninja, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8gmail's way of sorting emails into conversations has saved me countless hours of work of sifting through all my emails, this has been the case with most gmail users. are you suggesting you have gmail conversations turned off or you don't see this as saving you time?
- resplence, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8With greasemonkey you can have reader feeds on gmail, not the other around. And that's what would be really useful.
- b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8so... don't ever bother changing anything?
"We don't need a new version of windows! Version 3.1 works just fine." - jcronkhite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I would love reader integration. I don't want to have to use Grease Monkey. Google should look at all the Grease Monkey hacks and take note. Also, they should do what they did to Docs & Spreadsheets with the folders. I guess we can expect something in the near future?
- Ibox, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10just use FF
- Chakat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Well, it could be argued that gmail is the public beta for their hosted email system.
- FreakyT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Personally, I'm hoping for offline support through Google Gears. *crosses fingers*
- terminal157, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You don't. Read closer.
- darkfus, on 10/10/2007, -21/+28They have a lot of catching up to do with Yahoo. Maybe they'll offer IMAP someday.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6maybe you missed how the mediadefender emails were hacked. they had a simple 6 char password.
- SRSco, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9you're*
- JeffreyLloyd, on 11/08/2007, -6/+12Come on guys, it's a joke. The screenshot has someone translating "New Version" into "Pig Latin."
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6If you elect to use IMAP, they could have it switch to an IMAP mode where your "tags" are treated like folders and any messages that are under multiple tags just get copied into each folder. Just convert the "archive" into an "unfiled" folder. I'm pretty sure anyone setting up Gmail to use IMAP is a little more tech savvy than you're average webmail-only user, so they can adjust the header downloads on their client accordingly.
- imthe1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6i stand corrected. let me take this opportunity to apologize to all those who i have offended with my blatant lie. i can not speak Gobbledygook.
- danielryan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7A separate folder in the Inbox. I know, gasp, folders.
- Shamus22, on 10/18/2007, -2/+8I don't think they'd need trusted testers to test a new logo....
- FreakTrap, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Onay, ehay siay otnay.
- lowerlogic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6On the other end of the spectrum, every EA game goes gold moments after the team of core developers finish writing "int main(int argc, const char* argv[]) {}" and add somewhere between 6 - 8 syntax errors in a for-loop they call a main menu.
