- inactive, on 10/01/2009, -5/+84When you ban texting while driving, only outlaws will text while driving.
- zigzagzz, on 10/01/2009, -1/+68Next we'll be banning alcohol, make-up, reading when were driving! what is this world coming too?
- LordByr0n, on 10/01/2009, -11/+67Just what we need; more reason for insurance companies to open up your ass so they can get their other arm in. They love people like you.
- ajb2015, on 10/01/2009, -2/+39you showed her!
- Capta1nA, on 10/01/2009, -1/+35Outlaws and friggin idiots.
- HeizeusX, on 10/01/2009, -0/+33What would be really awesome is if you could just record your voice and send that as a text, and the other person gets that audio. Then they can reply to you with audio!
Maybe eventually we could get it to where you can connect to another person's phone, and you can have a real-time, voice conversation! - chesstwin, on 10/01/2009, -2/+31I couldn't care less if someone gets fined $10000 because they HAD to answer that text while driving. You risked the lives of innocent, unrelated people because of your own selfishness. I'm sure whoever is on the other end of the phone can wait 10 min, or you can just pull over. Just don't gamble with other people's lives.
- holzp, on 10/01/2009, -6/+34I am banning HTML, lets stay in text!
- TheInimitable, on 10/01/2009, -2/+29Problem is, it's often not crashing in a ditch. It's crashing into other people.
- SoldOutMatinee, on 10/01/2009, -0/+26but the babies really want to see the movies!

- 12916studios, on 10/01/2009, -7/+30About ***** time.
I quit getting rides home from college with someone because she texted as she drove. Her loss, because she'd been getting 20 bucks a ride as gas money. - had3l, on 10/01/2009, -2/+22As long as I can play GTA on my PSP while driving, it's all good.
- Rahodeb, on 10/01/2009, -0/+17First the Lions win a game, now this?
Detroit hasn't had two pieces of positive news in a row since the 50's! Quick, somebody burn down a home for terminally ill kids or something. - MaynardJK, on 10/01/2009, -2/+19and airplanes
- inactive, on 10/01/2009, -1/+17There's a very easy line between leaving people alone and "don't do the time, don't do the crime": danger to others.
You have garbage piled in your yard and it's encouraging rats? Here's your $100 ticket. See you in a month.
You jaywalked? Here's your $50 ticket. Don't get caught again.
Now you're piloting a projectile at extreme speeds that can utterly destroy a human being, and you're not even paying attention to that because you're ***** around with your toys? No, a bigger fine is warranted. - gildude, on 10/01/2009, -4/+20It would need to be a provisional ticket with exact time stamp and when submitted it would then need cross checked against service provider logs showing that you sent or read (read, not received) a text at that time. Once that cross check was complete it would become an official ticket and you would owe that money. If you don't want to pay a month's rent for an infraction - how about don't commit the infraction?
- DAC1138, on 10/01/2009, -2/+18Posting this comment while I drive and run over kids in the crosswalk.
- Cloned, on 10/01/2009, -1/+15Which is why you say ppl instead of people?
- ajb2015, on 10/01/2009, -2/+15...Funnie...real funny.
- tgc1, on 10/01/2009, -0/+13In the future, man. In the future.
- FaithclubDotNet, on 10/01/2009, -0/+13In case you haven't noticed, outlaws tend to be idiots.
- badenglishihave, on 10/01/2009, -2/+14Humorous but a poor analogy to gun rights.
- inactive, on 09/30/2009, -24/+36Phase it in...
Phase 1: Illegal to text while driving. $500 fine for first offense. $1,000 fine for second offense.
Phase 2: Allow insurance companies to renege on any policy claims if it can be proven that the driver was texting at the time of the crash. (ie: you wreck your $20,000 car because you were texting...YOU pay for it, not the insurance company) - sputnikv, on 10/01/2009, -0/+11that wouldn't work, people use public transportation and carpool
- Atomic1fire, on 10/01/2009, -0/+11Im pretty sure inattentive driving is allready illegal,
I think we can save paper and time by just branching texting under that.
but seriously though, how hard is it to not mess with your phone when you are driving a giant metal deathtrap waiting to happen, for you or someone else. - URnotheonly1, on 10/01/2009, -5/+16You do know this is a totally manufactured issue. Highway accidents are the lowest in HISTORY of American driving, but most of you will believe this and give yet one more reason for the police man to pull you over
(while he is pulling you over, he TYPES your license plate into his computer, where you think he was trained to do that?) - Cloned, on 10/01/2009, -0/+11I'm all for this, even if it will be hard to enforce.
When I had my motorcycle, almost every near accident involved someone texting and not paying attention to the road. I even once had a car come in contact with me when they cut me off, luckily it was slow enough to where I could regain control. The stupid girl texting never even noticed and kept driving. - rupprupp29, on 10/01/2009, -1/+11I hate to be that guy, but could you use the whole title next time?
I clicked the link because I was curious why 93% of Americans are in favor of banning written communication... - zoomaKabu, on 10/01/2009, -1/+10I'd rather you quit texting while you drive, even tough you think you can do it and still watch the road. You can't. You're not Superman.
- EddiePotato, on 10/01/2009, -2/+11A car a lethal weapon, no less so than an automatic rifle. Think about it - one careless move of the steering wheel or confusion over the pedals and you've just plowed into a crowd of people at a bus stop, or taken out a family of four heading the opposite direction. The weapon we call automobile kills over 40,000 people each year in the US alone.
Do you really think the law should be lenient with regard to the behaviors of people in control of such a powerful weapon in public places?
I'd personally like it to be about 10x harder to get and keep a license in the US. The roads are simply out of control with clueless, rude, and incompetent drivers. - sindex, on 10/01/2009, -1/+9I'm outta heeeere!
- appleseed1234, on 10/01/2009, -1/+9HONK HONK
- shaka776, on 10/01/2009, -3/+11Yeah, totally manufactured. We never hear stories, or see on-board videos of accidents cause by text-while-driving.
- ZOMGitsRadimus, on 10/01/2009, -0/+8Actually, you're encouraged to.
- rockon4life45, on 10/01/2009, -5/+12I'm for this.
- inactive, on 10/01/2009, -1/+8Mandatory road tests every time you renew your license. Who's with me?
- TVarmy, on 10/01/2009, -0/+7Seems like a man can't even get a good shave while he's driving. The cops are out of control. This is like telling a surgeon not to eat while he's doing an operation.
- julian02392, on 10/01/2009, -0/+6What if you're in the passenger seat?
- secrity, on 10/01/2009, -0/+6It is to protect other people from idiots. If somebody wants to pull a Darwin; fine, as long as they don't endanger others.
- TVarmy, on 10/01/2009, -0/+6Text messages don't kill people. Analogies do.
- apcfreak, on 10/01/2009, -0/+6Yes, because typing in sentences like "whre r u gonna b 2nite?" isn't braindead at all.
- rolls20s, on 10/01/2009, -1/+7KILLER TOFU!!!
- secrity, on 10/01/2009, -0/+67% plus some percentage of the other 93%.
- earlvanze, on 10/01/2009, -0/+5and dead people.
- EddiePotato, on 10/01/2009, -1/+6Quite true - and there are a lot more people than ditches in urban areas.
- TexMag63, on 10/01/2009, -2/+7What's the world coming to? Think you can drive fine at 2X or more the legal limit of alcohol? That's how "well" you can drive while texting.
It's really simple. If you want the PRIVILEGE of driving, you have to DEMONSTRATE *adult* behavior and that everyone else can trust you. I should not have to wait until you kill me or my family to get you to stop acting in a way that clearly puts everyone at lethal risk.
Some facts... 1) Police now routinely pull cell phone records for all drivers in accidents with major injuries. 2) You hurt somebody while text driving, the laws will be applied to you. Criminal laws. 3) You kill somebody while texting, you go to jail for vehicular manslaughter, maybe half an hour jury deliberation (you can't beat it). I've seen half a dozen videos of a teenager doing a a minimum of 18 months in maximum security prisons for this. You don't want that, even if you're so selfish that you don't care if you kill an innocent person.
Here are some powerful links. Perhaps instead of feeling hurt at your "freedom" being taken, try digging some of these to get folks to realize how stupid texting while driving is.

Watch the videos in order. If you can watch it and still want to text, maybe your family will visit you in jail. But probably not, because few people like a person that's that selfish.
CONDUCT A TEST IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IT'S BAD. If you don't believe it's bad or it can happen to you, set up an obstacle course in a stadium parking lot with cones. Make it simple. Drive it without texting (sober!) and video tape it (get a friend to help). Then text the videographer friend while you drive the course. Then switch roles. Finally, show all your friends the hilarious results. Yes, they'll truly be funny... because you'll find out how badly you drive while fully distracted. Here's a driving test conducted with high school students in Houston, TX

THINK! You have NO right to be defiant and take huge risks of killing somebody. If you think you're that good, go back and take your driving test with the police officer in the car and text while you do it. Even if they let you take the test while texting, you'll never pass. I doubt even professional race car drivers could pass.
I'm 46 years old. I've driven my pickup over 257,000 miles, and another vehicle or two for probably another 100,000 miles. I've had one fender-bender in all those miles. ONE. I've been driving since I was 15. I tried texting while driving, and it scared the living ***** out of me. I have superb hand-eye coordination. I *still* excel in sports. But I could not stay left of the center line on a nearly straight road at 15 mph until I turned the damn thing off. I have a cradle, so I wasn't hunting for it or keys. I can type 15-20 words a minute accurately on it most of the time. I'm telling you, anyone that does this regularly will kill somebody. It just can't be done safely. So grow up and stop. And get your friends to stop or they may kill you or your other friends.
For your own safety, regardless of whether YOU text or not, do not drive in the left-hand lane of undivided roads. A texter will cross the center line and clip you or hit you head-on sooner or later. Drive on the right if you want to live! - snobrder218, on 10/01/2009, -2/+7You support drunk driving as well? It's practically the same thing.
- SixOrSoPapers, on 10/01/2009, -0/+5Do you support the same logic for drinking and driving?
The idea is to prevent car accidents due to texting. Wrecking a $20,000 car is the least of my concerns... I've known several people killed in car accidents. Texting particularly impairs ability to drive, and there's really no need for it on the road. -
