- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+85Isn't that what we are doing right now?
- rappo, on 11/07/2007, -7/+81This is a pretty interesting approach... Google created a game for weird people to play at work to make their search results better :P That's... genius!
- doktorrocket, on 11/07/2007, -3/+63I played some last night. I didn't get a single match for "asshat"; despite the fact that in every portrait they showed, the guy looked like an asshat. C'mon, people.
- jasoneisen, on 11/07/2007, -5/+47They're pulling a Tom Sawyer fence whitewashing. Make people do your bitchwork, give them points! What do the points do? Nothing!
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -1/+42file for divorce or start over
- erbianchi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39it seems to me that google is training a neural network... the skynet conspiracy is back.
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -2/+27if by paid you mean you get to use the rest of google's awesome software for free - yes
- info, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Yes, it's strangely addicting... must stop... but I don't want to...

You idiot. Google's method is almost 100% spam-proof, have you even looked at it?!? You're matched randomly with another anonymous user, then given only 90 seconds to tag as many images you can. ONLY the tags that are entered mutually between the two users (each of which don't know what the other is writing) actually get tagged as descriptors of the image. I can put "marshmallow" for every single image I come across, and Google won't tag any of the images unless it actually IS a picture of a marshmallow and my partner tags it as well. So please.... next time.... get a freakin' clue. - afx1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18What if your partner is an idiot...
- Shwaza, on 11/07/2007, -0/+16That's a really good way to get some free, strong keywords with little work for Google. They really are a smart company.
- Roger, on 11/07/2007, -3/+19Kinda fun.
I get paid for this right? - kenthorvath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Actually, I rather think that the whole random partner that must agree requirement prevents such abuse.
- techiedigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Check out
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8246463980976635143&q=tech+talk+cmu+esp+game
and http://espgame.org
That's where the whole idea is from - hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Digg for actually linking to the software and not some crappy blog.
- filmil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It's exactly like the ESP game. In fact, the creator of the game gave a Google TechTalk this summer.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8246463980976635143 - PAJK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Bandwaggon? Oops, I just jumped on the "comment on digg" bandwaggon!
It is a method for search and organization, not a bandwaggon... *rolls eyes* - transfire, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Give credit where credit is due: this was invented by Luis Von Ahn:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8246463980976635143&q=Human+Computation&hl=en
I hope Google is giving him his due. - detrate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I'm on it!
- qwickone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@ OBK
why would they pay people if they can call it a game and people will do it for free? - ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Did they just prove that 10,000,000 monkeys typing for years can produce usable data?
- mazza558, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Does anyone's game freeze when the timer stops? I can still type things....
- gnarbuckets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think it still needs some work. The images are tiny, and the "pass" function doesn't seem to work very well.
- madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If you wanna get payed for this kind of work:
http://www.mturk.com - mikesherov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6why is this so insanely fun? And I thought I was gonna do some work today.
- afx1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9After which, I will check out this Google Image Labeler...
- Fimus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Some people are SLOW over there.... while I had 5 labels already the other guy still didn't type anything.
And some guy didn't know what a router was.
Anyone from digg want to pair up? - briyan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Anyone else feel "held back" by slow typists on the other end?
- Casel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, that won't work.
A label isn't applied unless both participants put the same word.
Good feature. - jayfarer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I need to be able to see a bigger version of a picture. I can't tell what the hell is going on in most of these thumbnails, how can we label them accurately?
- enjourni, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10It's brilliant really. Kinda the same strategy in creating a blog post if you think about it- people that feel compelled to comment will jump in and create free content for your website.
All of the social web 2.0 websites actually employ people to create content for their sites (without paying them), by making it "fun" to "contribute". It's more of a marketing movement then any sort of technology movement. - H2SO4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Very Smart! now do the same thing for Google Video to get rid of all those stupid ones.
- blandrys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I want BIGGER IMAGES!! So many times I could hardly even see what the picture was supposed to be... :( Apart from that, genius
- razei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They should change Google Video's labeling system to be like the image labeling; another person must agree and you can't enter any label twice. Because right now, anyone can add any label they want to a video that doesn't belong to them, and a lot of the more popular videos get spammed by all the idiots that regular Google Video [which is why I got rid of the comments section with a small css hack :P].
- gregorrothfuss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/060901-094309
"Yes, Image Labeler is based on my ESP Game, which Google licensed. I'm not employed by Google, however, since I'm a full-time faculty member at Carnegie Mellon." - thrackle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm really surprised that the comments pointing out where this idea came from are not getting more digs (one of the above is even getting buried!).
Please please please watch the tech talk that the inventor, Luis Von Ahn, gave at Google back in July:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8246463980976635143&sourceid=docidfeed&hl=en
This guy is brilliant, but he is also very funny and gives a great presentation. He does a really great job of explaining how to use ‘spare human cycles’ to help us solve many problems that are currently very difficult, if not impossible for computers to solve.
He also thoroughly explains how simple it is to prevent cheating / mislabeling / spamming is a game such as this. For example, just because you and your partner decided to label every image 'blue', that doesn’t mean Google is going to use that label. Many other random people also have to choose the same label. Etc.
Anyways, this is just one of those things where you watch the video and you get frustrated because you feel like: This is such a great idea! Why isn’t anyone doing this NOW!
Just very happy to see this idea really get it’s chance (although it would be better if it wasn’t buried in the labs :)
(P.S. As other commenters have pointed out, this IS what Ahn proposes in his talk. Google is licensing the idea from him.) - drewolanoff, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5This is addictive.
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yep, and it pisses me off...
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It does.
Put your mouse over the images you've successfully labeled. - OrlyonokEaglet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4so why do the factory/construction images keep reappearing? :)
most common is: man/men, woman, people - ralcocer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So, whatever happened to espgame and peekaboom?
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hint: See the other person's guesses by hovering over already done pictures.
Oh, and that factory looking place with the blue metal that I keep getting and no one knows is ATLAS at Cern, so tag it right. - tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I wish you could pick who you pair up with. Honestly I don't understand how some of these people can't figure this stuff out when it's so obvious.
- ckirsch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Flame all you want, I think its kinda fun. Weeeeee.
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That only means something if the person you're working with is doing the same thing.
- niiru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Except you sometimes end up with inaccurate labels. A picture can be very hard to work out in that little preview size, and google don't make a link to the full image till after the game.
I guessed something was a truck cab, and it matched the other guy, but when I looked later it looked like it might have been a helicoptor cab from the fullsize image. - gregorrothfuss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3they licensed the technology from him.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I guess ESP Game and Peekaboom are still around, and I liked the ESP Game better than this... they have a better interface in my opinion.
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Must...get...in...top...100.
Addicting, hmm, must contain nicotine! -
