- D4r7h3v1l, on 10/11/2007, -2/+77Don't they mean TLDs?
- bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -3/+70.biz is a joke.
- asuraci, on 10/11/2007, -2/+63Hm, I'll have to get my hands on http://steve.jobs/ before anyone else does.
- Schug, on 10/11/2007, -4/+58This just makes stuff more confusing. I honestly don't trust websites with ".biz" domains. They always seem to be harbor spyware. Why not just go with .net, .com, or .org. Those are enough. If it isn't available think of a new name.
- mcnappy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+56Was there ever a valid reason to reject .xxx? Most of the major porn sites adhere to confirming that the user is 18 or older. With .xxx, blocking porn sites would be much easier at institutions where porn is considered inappropriate -- school and work.
- ablez3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+51....with what?
- MichaelStanton, on 10/11/2007, -0/+36Any speculation on what the new ones might be?

- paulOr, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27iv got loads of .biz domains, i see nothing wrong with them, i wouldnt use them to promote a company however, .com i feel is best for that.

- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24What the hell does IPv6 have to do with TLDs? All we're talking about adding is new .addresses.
- GCarden, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22What's the .cat domain name for? The plethora of funny/cute cat videos on the Internet?
- mecole21, on 10/11/2007, -6/+26.*****
- anotherjeff, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22.stfubitch
- Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19I thought it was the TLD for breezy Hollywood executives.
- Anteros, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18I want lol.cat
- scubajim, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Part of ICANN's reasoning on not going with .xxx domains was that they didn't want to get into the business of deciding what fell into that catagory or not. They were leery of certain governments trying to create a banished area with ICANN policing it. (not in their purview) Too much fear that certain countries would use .xxx to block sites or relegate sites to .xxx.
- resta6, on 01/12/2009, -1/+12to make more money for the domain registration services.
- williumbillium, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12or how about not have a different TLD at all. you shouldn't have to use a different url depending on what platform you are viewing a website on. people really just need to implement css properly so you can view the same website on any medium.

i want ceiling.cat - IEatHamburgers, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13.gop & .dem
That way we can filter out opinionated ***** more easily. - cplkai, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I think also the fact that ICANN doesn't want to decide what falls under .xxx and what doesn't.
Would a site that had pictures of nude models as art, or for understanding of how the human anatomy works, go under .xxx? What about a site dedicated to highly-sensual softcore, yet with no actual nudity in the entire site? What about erotic art? What about a site that's not about porn, but yet they get a registered .xxx for the hell of it. Is ICANN going to hire staff to check .xxx domains to make SURE they're using them for adult content (although I doubt they'd have many problems finding people to do that job).
It's just too hard to try and police something like that, and ICANN doesn't want to have to deal with it. They don't even bother checking .com/.net/.org domains to make sure you're using them commercially/as a network/organization, why would they want to bother with .xxx? - lcarsdeveloper, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12You sir, are what's wrong with the internet. I'm so sick to death of cybersquatters. There really should be a law to stop people like you. Everytime I register a domain some idiot comes along and registers the .net and .org versions of it just in case it becomes a big hit. All the short domain names are taken, it's such a huge waste. And then you see stupid domains like www.playstation3www.com for sale on eBay for $500,000. I'd like to get a shorter domain for my main website, it's hideously long, but some squatter has the one I want. He's wasting it, I could do something useful with it. But he'll probably want $10,000 for it, because it's only 9 letters long.
- CuriousCraig, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Its just as bizarre (at least to be widely talked about): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.cat
P.S. Are links like above cool in comments? Are they considered "HTML tags" ?
I'm curious... - Aliarse, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12@dilibau (#6649838)
digg.down - CrucifiedEgo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10For the record, .jobs has been out for years. It's impossible to get one unless you're an employment agency, in the same way you can't get a .ca unless you are a resident of, or have a business in, canada.
- TomP, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Caturday.cat
- stealthcow, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11stop saying "I'm curious", it's not clever - yes we get it, your name is CuriousCraig.
wanker - Gadren, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Adding TLDs hasn't seemed to work the way it should, because large companies often grab the same domain under different TLDs. For example, both google.com and google.net redirect to Google's main site. If this continues, then what's the point of having more TLDs?
- stevenvh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8And that's why the porn industrie doesn't like it. They don't want to be on a TLD which is completely blocked. But we already discussed this.
- CuriousCraig, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8There is some pretty interesting diversity across different TLDs... ahem
http://www.cognitive.com/ - a real business making "legitimate" use of the domain
http://www.cognitive.info/ - registered, but server not found
http://www.cognitive.org/ - a wasted domain, content is quite irrelevant to URL, solely exists to be "monetized" by low-life bottom feeding company (not offered for sale)
http://www.cognitive.net/ - same, except available for sale ("Domains are individually priced from $688 - 1,000,000")
http://www.cognitive.biz/ - same, owned by same speculator as cognitive.net
http://www.cognitive.us/ - same, does a better job of exposing sponsored search results, available for sale via blind email inquiry
HUGE proportions of the domain space are owned by useless middlemen who add little value to the system other than to try to extract money from people/businesses wanting to make productive use of the addresses...
What do you think?
I'm Curious... - JimJones, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10just like how non us people can NEVER get .us domains. lol.
- musicphreke, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Well, think about it. All these websites that have like mobile.domain.com are confusing to remember because not all use the same subdomain for it. Sometimes they'll use m.domain.com, or something else. doman.mobi is much easier to remember. digg.mobi, google.mobi, etc. = much easier. Plus cell phone software could use this by automatically puting the .mobi at the end of any website you type in or something, too. That'd be too easy, right.
- psevium, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5There's all the ones that don't exactly work from new.net (unless you have their ***** installed)
.kids, .llc, .chat, .law etc (but most suck and/or are too long) - spiffytech, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Which do you want to type on a number pad- 'mobi' or 'mobile'?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10I agree with mcnappy, blocking porn sites would be a lot easier if they use the ".xxx" domain.
- jollyroger814, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5that's not really true. lots of domain companies don't give a ***** who they are registering to just as long as they get paid. when i worked for one online e-commerce site we had .co.uk and a few other countries including canada i believe.
- AbortedFetus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Can't you choose which TLD you want when buying a domain? ICANN wouldn't FORCE porn sites to get a .xxx domain, would they? If I wanted to buy something like mygrandmawithahorseandtwosheep.com I could still do it, no?
- griz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The bigger issue is what constitutes porn and who decides where the cutoff is?
- gwenli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Exactly, that's why .xxx would have never worked.
- CuriousCraig, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5@ lcarsdeveloper
It appears we are on the same wavelength... it is truly sad how the lure of easy money has led so many people to adopt programmatic approaches to abusive ways to extract money from others... so many types of SPAM, so little time... - markfulton, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"more gTLDs are pointless unless they are anything short of a direct competitor to .com. (He suggests .web would be a good candidate) Schilling also believes “shadow TLDs” or miss-spellings of existing domains should be introduced to deliver that traffic back to the web developers as opposed to the internet browser giants such as Microsoft (IE) and Mozilla (Firefox) who earn millions of dollars in revenue from domain extension miss-types..."

Sorry, she can't come to the internet right now, she is busy making .xxx films for her new .jail website. - 7952, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Not really.
The majority of porn sites want to be found. How else would they be found by search engines. That makes them very easy to block. If you want to block these sites you can, its easy.
The small number of sites that don't want to be found, that exist in the dark and are full of bad things would not want a xxx domain and would not be blocked. - wastedthelight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2As a web designer I think the idea blows. Also speaking as a college student. I have ideas, i want to give them life, i dont want to spend $250. If that happens (yes it will of course cut down on squatters) small time business wont even get websites anymore. My friends and I wont make personal sites or sites for our clans, bands (even though most bands just use myspace now), and just have the option to do so. While it has been said domains are going to hike back up in price, $250 is just nuts. but again, yes it would cut down on people just buying to buy. I've been screwed over by these morons and 99% of the time, they wont email back if you ask them how much it's for sale for.
- stubcn75, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's for Catalunya .. it's not really a country but try telling the Catalans that. Chances are they will tell you "Catalunya is not Spain". Still, i live here just outside Barcelona. Lovely place to live.
- RoflMyWaffle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2hope they don't add .xxx, I'll have to go through and change ALL of my bookmarks!
- harrymcwealth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2".porn" or ".xxx" 92.5% of all websites will shift over.
