OVER E-TAILER SERVICE
By MATT TWOMEY
December 11, 2005 -- Let it be a lesson to online retailers everywhere — beware ticking off a geek.
When Brooklyn-based dot-com PriceRitePhoto refused to sell Thomas Hawk a high-end camera offered at a loss-leader price — when he declined to also purchase expensive accessories — Hawk took his case to the blogging masses.
On the community-driven tech site Digg.com, he alleged that when he told the PriceRitePhoto sales rep he would blog about his unsatisfactory experience, the rep "went ballistic," threatening that he would see to it that Hawk would "never be able to order anything on the Internet again."
"He was outright abusive," Hawk told The Post. "No one should ever say that kind of thing to any customer."
Diggers, as enthusiasts of the site are known, rose up, flooding the e-tailer's phone lines, faxes and e-mail.
The story became Digg's biggest ever, receiving more than 7,000 "diggs," or readers' seals of approval. The PriceRitePhoto site went down — not what you want during peak holiday shopping season. The Web storefront later posted an apology to "those of you who tried to contact us in the past few days," saying the site was down "for maintenance."
"I was floored by the response," Hawk said, attributing it to the resonance the situation has — who hasn't had a bad customer relations experience? "Suddenly it was all over the Internet."
Hawk says he received an apology from PriceRitePhoto's purported owner, Ed Lopez, who said the sales rep in question was fired. But a call to PriceRitePhoto produced no Ed Lopez, and further calls and an e-mail went unanswered.
Hawk says he's learned to be more careful about where he shops, but also warns online stores that play the bait-and-switch game: "Anyone you're talking to could be a blogger." - baraqiyal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Here's what the PriceRitePhoto storefront actually looks like:

I doubt you'll see that anywhere on their site. - Mininday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Bugmenot

Pass: nypost - pikarskisucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 I actually know the man that owns this company and I am not surprised to read this article. I actually worked for him in a previous company of his. He thieved me out of my due salary, and even though I won an arbitrated court judgment from him, he closed the business before I was actually able to collect on it (I wonder why). If you would like to know this persons last name, feel free to look at my scree name.
He lacks any moral values, though he wouldn't tell you that. His own community shunned him away for his arrogance. I am proud to see someone like Thomas Hawk expose this person and his dealings for what he really is. - Negative_Creep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5There will be no Ed Lopez. This is a Hasidim Jewish owned store. In a VERY Jewish area of Brooklyn. It is a mail center to be exact. Brooklyn has no less than 2 dozen of these on line type camera stores. Some are more legit than others. I work for a large delivery company. This is how I know this.
- mr_slayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I recommend anyone who has Firefox to try out Bugmenot Extension for pages like these. All you gotta do is right click and choose bugmenot in the login box on almost all these registration required news sites.

Good digg, btw. - thomashawk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Registration is required to read the article.
- anonice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heh.. I think "Screw off, I'm blogging this!" is going to be the new cry of the disenfranchised customer
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, it doesn't. That's not the point though.
- ochants76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the price is wrong bitch :)
- takemynamedamit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's more common sense really, I never said camera stores (in the traditional sense) per-say, what I did mention is a place like this. A non discript warehouse. Whats worse....one run by Hasids...don't believe me? Stroll the Brooklyn docks. A few gems in the rough for sure but, run by Hasids? Few and far between.
I also mentioned it would be hard for people to do this sort of research, thus I explained what I tell my parents to do.
I think your a frigging stereotype. Is it necessary for you to make the world think everyone online is a jerk?
Jerk. - aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1? B&H photo is run by Hasidics.... its one of the best photo stores around.
- catullus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@masterzora: it only became news b/c of digg. it's news that a newspaper covers stories that they wouldn't otherwise cover if it weren't for digg
- 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And nothing has changed at all, http://priceritephoto.com/ is up and running fine with the following message:
For those of you who tried to contact us in the past few days, we would like to apologize for any inconvenience that you may have incurred. Our website was down for maintenance and we are back up and fully operational. If you have placed an order with us please be assured that it will be shipped in a timely manner. Happy Holidays.
The digg expose changed nothing... - catullus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uhhh @masterzora... not only is digg *a* news source, but also the story is significant because of the concept of digg.com permitting stories like this to reach the mainstream press. i.e. because of the democratic way in which digg works, one maltreated person's story can receive the attention it deserves, which it otherwise couldn't
- obscurelyfamous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Digg effect grows.
+Digg - jervana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone post the article please.....
- larryperkins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Registration with a real email address. I don't think so
- steveo2112, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not working with bugmenot -- someone copy/paste the article here?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0excellent
- lezombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As terrible as the New York Post is, it's still pretty awesome that digg-generated interest got a major newspaper to cover the story.
- yoda715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let this be a lesson to etailers!
- Wizard750201, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great to see Digg and Diggers can have an effect
- hriwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0doesn't really say anything we already don't know.
- brucebeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks..
djrbx (1) - dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@jervana digg search gets this:
http://digg.com/deals/Abusive_New_York_Camera_Store_Threatens_Blogger - catullus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome. the mainstream press covering a story exposed by digg.com / a story *made* by digg.com
- ryanstein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Instead of checking ePinions or Pricegrabber, people will start searching Digg! Fantastic job Diggers!
- pacificdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow... didn't know digg made that much of an impact. thanks jeffrey903 for posting the whole story and to baragiyal for the pics. congrats to everyone who made the difference.
- Vlatro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The down-time on the site will only be another excuse given to people waiting for orders to be filled. "The website had some technical difficulties that may have effected our shipping procedures. We apologize for the inconvenience...". in response to takemynamedamit's reply about New Yorkers knowing better. Yes we do, but a website brings these scams to markets where ***** this deep isn't all that common, and anyone with a computer and Internet connection can put together a website that will look a legit as any big name company out there. Better to drop the issue and let the store struggle with a bad reputation then to keep pushing until they rename the store and drop-ship from vendors with only a P.O. box for responses. This guy would just disappear and we might be the suckers next time with a new business run by the same bastard.
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty fun to see the aftershocks still being reported.
- Nurseman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He's been a great attorney general and has done great job all around. (can you guess who I'm voting for in 08?) He's done a great job at getting press clippings, not much more. He makes deals with 10 people, to get one, and then holds a huge press conference. Six months later the guy pleads out and gets probation.
The guy is all about his press clipping.
Ask him about DieBold and voting. Ask him why no company that has donated to his elections ever get investigated. - skwhirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 21st century method of ***** stirring via letter writing campaigns.
- takemynamedamit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait...why bring Spitzer in to this?
He's been a great attorney general and has done great job all around. (can you guess who I'm voting for in 08?)
In other news....NY does have a lot of places like "pricerightphoto"
but along with knowing rolex isn't spelled with a B, NY'ers also know to avoid places like these, especially when they are run by Hasidics. - stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"NY'ers also know to avoid places like these, especially when they are run by Hasidics."
That's like a frigging stereotype of a NYC attitude. Is it necessary for you to try to make the world think everyone in NYC is a jerk?
You say everyone knows to avoid NY camera stores run by Hasids. How would someone SHOPPING ONLINE FROM ANOTHER STATE, WHO HAS NEVER BEEN TO THE CITY OR KNOWS WHAT A HASID IS, KNOW THIS? - sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just went to priceritephoto.com and got this. Guess they're down again...

The firewall did not receive a timely and complete response from the upstream server it accessed in attempting to complete the request. This may be due to one or more of the following:
* An incorrectly formatted response from the web server,
* the web server suddenly became unavailable,
* an overly congested network link between the web server and the firewall, or
* extraordinarily high latency between the web server and the firewall.

- OAKsider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the pics if the storefront. (baraqiyal)
And that's a nice BugMeNot plugin! (mr slayer)
Good Diggin indeed. - takemynamedamit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well B&H has a reputation to uphold, not to mention a huge store front,as opposed to some non-discript warehouse lot. However, who is really going to do that much homework? I personally tell my parents to only go to name brand places online, or places with a local b&m.
(IE: amazon, best buy, etc) It's not worth the savings if your only going to end up being ripped off. - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thought this was their storefront...
http://donwiss.com/pictures/BrooklynStores/h0121.htm - CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Their site says,

YEEAAHHH... or something like that. - ekstasis16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hence the reason you should never buy from shady online stores like this. Stick to B&H Photo or Adorama and you'll be safe. I got screwed out of a DV cam last year from a place like this. If you see a price that looks too good to be true, it probably is. Common sense, people.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well, if their site is back up, I say we take it back down...
- pinoyboy82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This actually makes me feel very fortunate I got my camera for a good price from priceritephoto! I always thought it was weird how they really tried to force a positive feedback once you bought the camera... I didn't even bother with feedback at all so at least I didn't contribute!!
- tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Enough of this priceritephoto crap, there are like 10 of these stories on digg already! GIVE IT A REST!!! Please leave all further PRP stories on the blogs. . . the first one was ok, but this is getting RIDICULOUS!!! I'm undigging any and all of my digs from anything that mentions "Pricerightphoto" now...
- en3r0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Way to go Digg :)
