- cheifchuck0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am sick of these "confirmed" stories. Jesus Christ. Someone's blog doesnt "confirm" anything.
I forget, can you run XP on the intel macs? Its been "confirmed" both ways. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! - inkninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I for one welcome our new bagin overlords...
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Am i the only one that noticed this. first it was 802.11b then 802.11a, then g, then i, now n. This spells "bagin".
- ravedave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Last week was just the fact that the standard was *Set* to be ratified, not that it *was* ratified.
- lemurballs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm still using 802.11b :(
- natelv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i went back to wired...
- dolphumous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"i'm still using 802.11b :("
I still use wires. - cusoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uhh, it was confirmed last week. In fact there was a story here about it then. Old!
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@quaffapint I don't think you are, there were several versions of 802.11n you may be using some oddball version of it and not the new version all the companies agreed on.
I'm not sure if they approved one version over another or combined two version, i.e. compromised.
As long as you are happy with your setup it shouldn't matter anyway, unless you try to buy a new device with the newer 802.11n setup. - kristov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does this mean that any existing Pre-N hardware can be upgraded to the proper N standard? Ive got a whole Belkin Pre-n setup - rocks totally but im wondering if I take my laptop and pre-n card to a Starbucks in the future will it work? (assuming they upgrade i realize).....
- ryanknapper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When will there be a Linux based Linksys WRT54n?
- TheGalacticFork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What happens when we run out of letters in the alphabet?
- SenorFrog21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So how long will it be before we see the new "n" stuff coming out in stores? I know you can already get pre-n stuff...but I'm talking about the new "n standard" stuff. I'm about to go wireless with my home network...might as well wait until n is available...unless it's going to be a long time. Anybody know? I hadn't even heard of "i" until reading these comments.
- opus20745, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um, if u read the article, it STILL hasn't been ratified.
- tomaburque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does this mean that any existing Pre-N hardware can be upgraded to the proper N standard?"
If the deviation from the standard is only in the firmware then a firmware upgrade should do it. If the difference is in the hardware then it won't.
Dugg - algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The pre-n stuff rocks. I am supporting most of my neighborhood with internet access using it. Some homes are about half a mile away and still get great coverage with standard antennas. Hopefully the new N standard is even better.
- Fenster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there a standard for how long a standard must last before the next standard becomes a....standard?
Maybe I'm getting older but don't they have a new one of these each year? I just got my PSP and DS to work on my current router. - AssultMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have both wireless and wired set up, but I never unplug because my laptop sits in the same spot all the time, and transferring "data" to my X-Box is way faster over 100mbit.
Perhaps 802.11n will be fast enough for this type of job, if only it is affordable too... - mtupker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now I can upgrade my wireless hardware.
- AIR802, on 03/07/2009, -0/+0The reality is that new technologies take years to fully develop and market. Here we are in March 2009 and the 802.11n standard has now been pushed back for ratification to 2010. The wireless equipment resellers of AIR802 equipment, www.air802.com completely prefer stable and powerful 802.11b/g devices that actually perform well. The least powerful wireless 801.11b/g router at 250mW of RF power output beats any draft 802.11n product with 50mW of power any day hands down. Also certifing a product that the standards haven't been agreed upon really doesn't help anyone much.
- stewarbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm fairly sure that pre-n hardware will be completely useless when it comes to the 11n standard. Granted, the access points will more than likely support pre-n configuration, but you will not get the speeds and benefits of the N standard. Don't take that as gospel, but I remember back when the pre-n came out reading a good amount of articles on the wastefulness of setting up a pre-n network.
Also, if you are Belkin or Linksys, etc.... would it be more beneficial for you to make it compatible or incompatible with the N standard? Which route will make you more cash? - raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I won't make the jump until it's standardized and there is a "certified" program established.
IMHO non-certified 802.11a/b/g hardware _sucks_. The quality is just terrible.
They need to be certified to the specs. Otherwise, don't complain about connection problems. - TigerClaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they keep this up, In a couple of years from now, We'll end up having 802.11z.
- jtravis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0802.13
that doesnt exist....not a working a group... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0were is the LINK no digg!
- fushin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Buying new 802.11n stuff the second it comes out. :)
- jtravis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WPA is a subset of 802.11i....11i is all about security.
TigerClaw, try looking up 802.11 on wikipedia to see whats coming up...they obviously dont go in order... - Rudrasksha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Am i the only one that noticed this. first it was 802.11b then 802.11a, then g, then i, now n. This spells "bagin"."
'i' ? I must have missed that one. - quaffapint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow - they finally came to agreement - I didn't think we'd ever get it - even though I'm already using it...;->
