- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good bye HDD
hello flash - electricalen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Modders don't wait pre-modded crap. They do it themselves. Hence the term "modder"."
How many "modders" do you know that have built their own case, cut up their hard drive and added a window, custom built their own lighted fans, and designed their own lighted cables. Modding is mostly about integration not original design. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"suggested price of $349.99"

Repeat after me: 150GB Raptor - xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would get one if they werent so damn much.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dig cus I love my little 74GB Raptor
best HDD on the market hands down :) - Paladin27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For sale: Two Western Digital 74GB Raptor hard drives, need to make room for RaptorX!
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This drive specs have been on their site since November 17th, 2005
NO digg. - PSUViking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys just don't get it. Modders will cover up the clear windows, maybe paint them chameleon or some other garish color.

WHAT?!?! - mikeyG9x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it impresses my girlfriend...The giant radioactive-rubber pants command me.
- laughterkillsme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice to see a company designing it's products for user's demands instead of telling users what they are allowed to do.
- 404notfound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dunno if it's just the article or the actual marketing kool-aid, but saying a hard drive is designed for modders just because it has a clear cover seems kind of silly to me.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i know you cant even saturate half of sata bus
its like sata and sata2, you cant even use sata nowhere near to its full extent, so why get sata2... yet people would rather have sata2 over sata... - jimparker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"and half the throughput sata can handle"....hope you didnt see that as a fault of the drive. Raptors are the fastest drives you can buy aside from some scsi drives. No drive on the market can saturate even the sata 1.5 bus let alone the 3.0. Forget the window its got 16mb cache and 10000 rpm Im sure the benchmarks will show a decent speed increase over the previous generation drives.
-Jim - xVern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its pretty.
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I would rather have SATA 2 over SATA, but that is just for Upgrading Purpises.
This drive is going to be asome, finaly a raptor can be used as a sorage drive as well as a OS+Game drive. I really want to see the benches on this. - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont think this will sell so well. one of the reason people mod is for bragging rights and custimazation to make it like no other if you sell something thats "hip" or "cool" and everyone has it, why would the modders want it. so if they do buy it they will probably mod that too
- NidStyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd like them to actually produce something that'll last more than the warranty, and you know be a bit more reliable in any intance. WD sucks for reliability.
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks cool, but whats the point? My PC sits next to my legs. The only time I see it is when I put a disc in.
- rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Modders don't wait pre-modded crap. They do it themselves. Hence the term "modder".
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'm happy with my little 74gig raptor. Any more than that is just overkill anyway"
not really. maybe for a system drive, but not for a data drive. let's say you want to store backup copies of your two dozen some odd movies. well, that's two 700mb divx files per movie. that's the best backup you can make right now if you know how to encode properly. ~25 movies * ~1400mb = ~35000mb or 35gb. well, that's about half your drive right there. then, you gotta add in a couple seasons of tv shows that you like. if contained in .avi, those shows can quickly take up a dozen gigabytes of ever-so-valuable hdd space. now, you want your podcasts. let's say you have half a dozen audio podcasts you listen to and a couple video podcasts. if you hold about a week per podcast that can add up to close to half a dozen gigabytes of hdd space. most people have games on their pc. i don't. my pc can't handle all the new games out there now. i hear they can take up a couple gigabytes of hdd space. let's say you have a two or three. there's another half a dozen gigabytes down the drain. and windows. windows can take up another half a dozen gigabytes with it's system and document folders/settings. so, to recap: ~35gb of movies + ~12gb of tv shows + ~6gb of podcasts + ~6gb of games + ~6gb for windows = ~65gb worth of hdd space. that only leaves you ~10gb of hdd space left. hope you don't want that many applications on your computer. oh yeah, and you won't be able to defrag anymore. but, hey, you got a raptor! why do you need to defrag?
me--personally--i'm gonna wait for those hybrid drives to come out. i betcha they're coming out soon. we might see some, in an affordable price range, as soon as spring, but my bet's summer or fall. although, i bet it's nice to have a 10000rpm sata hdd. i've never had either. not a 10k rpm, nor a sata hdd. :( - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but i do have almost half a terabyte of storage capacity! w00t!
love those 200gb seagates! - harshbarj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm happy with my little 74gig raptor. Any more than that is just overkill anyway(still have 40gb free space after windows xp and all my games). Just add a slower drive for bulk storage.
still it looks cool so dugg. - edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"How many "modders" do you know that have built their own case, cut up their hard drive and added a window, custom built their own lighted fans, and designed their own lighted cables. Just finished my first case build, cut and paint last night...and my lighting components should be here today. :) - JTMON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok WTF, another half assed attempt...there's barely even a window..the self modes I've seen look nicer than that one made by an actual hd company lol. Sigh...oh well, guess there are always the specs to fall back on...
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did they attach blue LEDs to the drive platters?
No?
Forget it then! - disord3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$50 premium for a clear case... No extra cache, no extra features. Interesting.
Are server and modder the only two versions of the 150GB? Or is there still supposed to be an average/consumer level version? - Rocksea24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm just glad they finally upgraded the cache from 8mb to 16mb. Maxtor has had 16mb caches for almost 2 years now and WD's Raptor drives are supposed to be the fastest, yet they were hindered by smaller cache sizes.
- deegin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If the price was the same as it's non-clear counterparts then I could understand. $50 more though? No thanks.
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*sigh* reaches for wallet
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0more cowbell!
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Blech. I think I'll go with the 150GB server version of the Raptor. This drive is just lame....come on WD don't f'ckup the best drive that you got.
- RobertH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow seethrough stuff makes you a leet modder. - of course
- hcker2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Rip off.
- detrate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I look at my harddrives all the time and think to myself "Why doesn't this have a window like my portable CD player?
wait... no I lied.
This is stupid and anyone that gets it is inheritably so. - Zonkzor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm surprised something like this has never been built before purely for educational purposes. I can see someone making a good amount of money selling a hard drive like this for 5 times the price to schools. Hell I'd like to have one of these myself (for a few bucks more) since I've never had a hard drive I was willing to gut and even then I wouldn't get to see it work.

How To Be A http://CollegeCheapskate.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hard dirve performance is the worst in history compared to other parts on the computer.
I give a ***** if its got a clear side! Lets get some speed and to think they want how much... get the ***** out of here. If they know whats good for them they would come out with a drive that does what it says! Sata today does not even support 150MB substained trans so what are they doing?
They are lieing to you as a consumer hoping you know nothing and can make the connection faster with the same slow ass speeds. 10000rpms or not they are not that faster! i have alot of raptors and don't see the large speed increase even in raid.
Lieing to the consumer should be against the law yet all of these ***** do it! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"This is stupid and anyone that gets it is inheritably so."
I agree! - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0lol... X? X for them eXtreme modders with their fancy leds and neon tubes in there pcs...
this ***** is lame,
comes with a clear cover and half the throughput sata can handle... why would you want one? so you can show off a clear cover?
other new raptors are good, this one very lame
marking as lame
