- canadianguy33, on 10/12/2007, -9/+62It's alright but kind of ordinary. That Alex guy got the job done so kudos to him. :)
I'm sure everytime I visit /. I'll wish that I'd put more work into my submission.
http://jiggit.com/slashdot/newSlashdot.htm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+49Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner.
- SbooX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Yeah I just saw this too. (You beat me to the punch!) I think I like it, it makes my eyes bleed less now. Congrats /., welcome to the post 1996 world of web design!
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36wow, they really did a good job, i didn't expect it to be done this fast. Slashdot's looks now will equal its content.
- heinousjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19The Digg interface has some weird quirks... like I'm replying to you, but I have to type it all the way at the bottom of the page where I can no longer see the post. Don't get me wrong, I like Digg a lot, and I like the new Slashdot look.
I almost want Digg and Slashdot to merge. There are things in each I'd like to see in the other. - msbeckman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20Canadian, I like your layout better. Should've submitted that!
- darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15It's the old look, just rounder. Like CmdrTaco's stomache.
- dhuck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14i really like /.'s comment system. i wish digg would copy it a bit - especially marking comments as "funny" or "informative" etc etc, but keeping the digg system. it's easy on slashdot to read the comments you want - it just doesn't seem like there are that many good ones (3,4,5) anymore - everyones on digg ;)
- RSCruiser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I guess Digg is from 1998 too, with all it's gradients plastered all over...
The new Slashdot design looks quite good compared to what it was if you ask me. - SoAnIs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's JavaScript & CSS client side, Perl server side. Not AJAX.
- amoeba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's a nice improvement, the gradients and styling give it a more modern feel.
I like the way it keeps the feel of the old site with a distinctive new look. - rastan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6URIid Extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/563/
EDIT: Just noticed this extension is also available, haven't tried it yet but it looks easier than the other one: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2108/
This is a great resource for custom styles: http://userstyles.org/ - armbar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Modern, as in 1998, when gradients and splash pages were cool.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Looks better, but like I (and many others) have said before, it is just a slightly less fugly version of the original. I think this is as good as it could have been within the (nearly straitjacket) constraints of the contest.
They would have been better telling Taco to pound sand and deal with his ego, and gone with a complete redesign. People go there for the content, and keeping the redesign tied to the original was just silly. - sp4rky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The Slasdot story icons still look like *****. I hope that they do that next.
Seriously take a look at them.

.... list could go on and on.
Am I the only one that thinks this? - ozroy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I agree that the new design looks kind of ordinary. A redesign should fix the problems with the old design, like the redulous amount of white space between the news story and the comments.
All it is is the same old crap with a new coat of paint on it. - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It's the old Slashdot with round corners and poorly implemented AJAX. Basically, they couldn't get rid of what makes SD cluttered while adding a whole new mess on top of it.
If the menu on the left expands and contracts, but is expanded by default, why even let it contract? - Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So I like the new interface look, but now they need a new functionality. And that's really more of what Web 2.0 is.
By that I mean, AJAXing it up by allowing comments to be posted on the same page rather than a new one. Or being able to change the bury threshold without refreshing the page.
BTW, when I go to a story page, Opera crashes. - chapium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'm hopelessly addicted to both now :(
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, I was quite surprised and impressed.
Some of the typographic details in the post boxes are still just a bit clumsy (speaking as a design grad of an art school with a pretty good rep in Chicago for type work, though I'm not exactly high-level yet) but the rest is, honestly, pretty darn good.
The judicious use of space overall, with the uncluttering of elements, defining region borders by contrasting areas of tone (not with redundant lines), and at last proper scale between dominant elements (no more honkin' huge /. logo), makes this a redesign that was worth the wait.
Did Taco actually choose this one himself? - strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I read digg for the stories, Slashdot for the comments.
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4All that and the site STILL doesn't validate. And mostly for stupid little stuff.
Then again, neither does Digg. But Slashdot comes closer. - roostishaw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Well, I was just sitting here, clicking on the items in my bookmarks toolbar, and surprise...
My first thought was to submiit it to digg. I couldn't get the captcha the first three times... :D - xconspirisist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You forgot google :)
- jinushaun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Big improvement over the original Slashdot design, but I still think the runner up is better than this one.
- rastan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If you think it's ugly, try using the User CSS functionality of your browser (Firefox has this) and applying one of the many other submission templates. I like canadianguy's, so I just took his CSS and applied it and now every time I go to slashdot I see his:
http://jiggit.com/slashdot/newSlashdot.htm
Just a thought: Don't like the new design? Stop the bitch, whine, and moaning and do something about it! :) - Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"I dunno, I kind of am longing for the old look. I think the colors are lighter or something. It doesn't feel right anymore."
"I just hate the new skin. I have to get it out of my system. I friggin hate it. I keep hitting the hide/show section titlebars when I wanna click the links, the "Read more" link is not next to the X of X posts, the page is WAY too wide."
You know the design is wrong when even the Slashdotters are complaining. It looks like a welcome upgrade to me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How do you do that?
- swany1012, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now its time to update those images to the right of each story
- Piscinero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What the heck? This story has been buried. How come it did not make it to the front page and now even if you search for 'slashdot' it wont come up. How is that possible? I've seen stories with much less diggs make it to the front page. And how did it just disappear?
- sunra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3jasco:
That was added after the incessant nagging of the users. It's supposedly so submitters can't spam the submit queue to increase the page-rank of their blog. - kday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I like mine better, even though I never really finished. Nobody has to agree with me. The dude didn't like my clouds though, and unfortunately I didn't have enough time to redesign. Oh well, different tastes for different people :)
http://www.hippietreehuggers.com/slashdotredesign/redesign.html
only works in firefox/safari - antitab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Apparently Taco thinks (or maybe has empirical proof) that his readers are soooooo stupid that without the graphic icon's his readers would be unable to find the stuff that interests them."
That's bull. The reason the icons haven't changed is twofold: A. there are too ***** many of them, and B. no one has submitted better. If you're up to the task of redesigning all of Slashdot's icons, feel free. If I'm recalling the thread correctly, Taco has stated that he will be happy to take them. - whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ok they FINALLY got a new site design, now for the love of god will they get some new icons? The ones they have now remind me of KDE 1.
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Looks so 1990's I expected a page counter at the bottom.
- krux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4nice and clean. I like it.
- ddrirc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I noticed this also. If it isn't fixed I guess I'll stop visiting slashdot.
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@SoAnIs
"It's JavaScript & CSS client side, Perl server side. Not AJAX."
Having Perl, CSS and JavaScript doesn't mean the site's not using Ajax. When it loads the sectional display preferences, it uses an Ajax call to load in the radio buttons for which sections you want to display.
Your first sentence is absolutely correct, the second isn't. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It looks a whole lot better than the old Slashdot, but, I don't know; it seems a little "generic".
- chapium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I love the funny foot!
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ditto, heinousjay.
I would like a website that combines the best elements of digg, slashdot, and fark.
It would beasically be digg with comment titles (these are more important than you think!), more flexible posting options (html, images ok, etc.- bound within user-definable limits), deep nesting, cleaner "reply to" system, the ability to delete posts, extensive catagorization (beyond "digital electronics"), and a little more transparency on how stories make it to the front page.
Unfortunately, my coding experience is um... limited... but who knows! It could happen.
Lol, this goes with the post below it... once again proving heinousjay correct :P - tc811, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i like it
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I like how the only use of the NO FOLLOW tag is used soley on the links of the very people who post stores for them... shame on /.
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One annoying thing is needing to look to the right of every message to see what mod score it has. I guess I don't need to maximise the window on a widescreen, but even if i just use half the screen it is annoying. It doesn't matter so much on digg because each post hasn't got a title, and it is a fixed width.
- Majdaa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i don't like the design...not that i'm bragging, but i know i could've done a better job. I am lazy though so i'll give him all the credit for doing it...i believe that canadianguy33 did a better job but it needs some more work. I think it uses the same exact format which does nothing really, it's just an upgrade, not a new design...
by the way, just to save my rep, here are a few of my works... http://www.flickr.com/photos/20979758@N00/ - VirtualCtor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You can turn off the category icons in your preferences. I'm not saying that they aren't ugly, but at least you don't have to look at them if you don't like them.
Click Preferences -> Homepage -> No Icons - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When is Digg going to get some new stuff? I mean features, not looks. But both would be even better.
- Lyianis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome, thank you
- FreakinSyco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Slashdot... Possible the only site that can handle the Digg and Slashdot effect.*
*other than digg of course - Shmoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. Obviously they chose the most conventional design possible. I saw way more interesting designs being made. You're going to make a few people angry no matter what, might as well make it worth your while.

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
