- zaofreek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know any good handsets that'll work with Linux? I've pretty much replaced my traditional phone with Gizmo, but right now, I'm using a cheap little headset. There are a few products listed on the Gizmo site, but I want something that will meet these requirements:
1.cheap
2.good
3.Linux-compatible - quentinp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's great Skype, but will the handset work with AMD processor or are you going to sabotage the phones too?
- st3v, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2People, don't use Skype, as it is a propietary format. Use a service that is SIP or IAX2 compatible, such as the Gizmo Project.
- labelexec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have used skype for nearly 2 months. Although it's great for skype to skype calls, it really needs to work on it's skype in/out calls. The quality is horrible.
- kenplaysviola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use Skype to receive calls ($38 a year for your own phone number) and make outgoing calls ($0.02/minute in U.S.) since I live up in the boonies with no cell phone reception. Additionally I use Skype for video conferencing at work which is free (Gizmo Project cannot do this, correct?).
Skyp works really well for me and I am looking forward to trying out this new phone. Thanks - coolcoolglasses, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lame, you can already use any BT headset with skyp on a mac.
- chriskelley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1handsets or headsets?
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha, apparently the CeBIT show is here this year, according to this article: "Hangover, Germany"
I think someone drank too much at last year's show ;)
Been using my bluetooth headset with skype forever. There are lots of USB phones/handsets that work with skype already. This is no big surprise. The surprise is that it has taken someone this long to do it.
digg++ - blankoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why make a Bluetooth based phone? Seems like a waste of everybody's time and electricity. This means that your PC must be ON!
Cut out the middle man (your PC) and simply make the phone wi-fi capable. Then you just connect to your wireless AP (or a hotspot) with your Wi-Fi Skype phone (nintendo DS really needs a Skype release!).
Speaking of which, where the fark is Netgear's Wi-Fi Skype phone. Shouldn't it be available this month? They did say 2006 Q1! Grrr....we don't even know pricing yet. - weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is nothing new, and it doesn't really offer any advantages at the moment over DTEC phones as it still requires an external dongle. The only computers I know of right now eith Bluetooth 2.0 bulit in are the new Macs.
- Woknblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the article was good. as for the "forget skype" posts, I couldn't agree less. I have used skype for almost a year now. I live in the Philippines and make skype, skype in/out calls everyday to US and Canada and have never lost a call, and only once did I ever hang up and re-call. (It was a static noise while using a beta that immediately went away BTW). I have never had a bad experience with any call made, and I use a pair of $5 headphones w/ mic. I frequently have to ask my brother to keep his nose away from his 8 year old microphone because I can hear a "nose whistle". I have been video skyping since the beta and again, couldn't be more happy. Skype rocks. I don't have the inclination to try anything else. Give me one bad experience, and I will think about it. 1 year, and thousands of phone calls, and no problem. I will buy a skype phone if the price comes down on something like the article, say, $50 US or so. It looks good, but at that price, it's not going to blow away the stereo HQ calls I make from my $5 headset.
- jtown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why on earth would you need a special "Skype Approved" bluetooth headset? I've got the free credit they gave away last month sitting unused. I'll stick with Gizmo for now. $0.01/minute and my $13 PS2 headset works just fine on both PC and Mac. It ain't wireless but it has a long cord and it was cheap. :)
- mspice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0zaofreek, Gizmo is completely SIP compatible. You can get any SIP phone or adapter and use it with Gizmo. Just get a grandstream budgetone 101 or an adapter such as the handytone 286. I "unlocked" a Packet8 adapter that was really just a remarked Leadteck device. Here is a video:

Sorry about some issues with the video. I did the entire thing in a night and was really just playing with the editing software. - honkytonkwomen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes
- klept, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hangover, Germany?
Assume they mean Hanover. Geez doesnt anybody proofread anything anymore? Proofread, not spellcheck which I always find useless anyway. - persecuted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Blue tooth, 100 meters, am i missing somethign
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Could skype or similar programs take over the traditonal telephone."
Yes! As long as we move beyond landline-based broadband.
In Australia, Telstra have just put up the prices for connecting a landline too. - tirion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, I don't think my family will ever switch to voip phones until they look better.
Honestly, most of them look so damn fugy. Any one know any good looking phones? - jamms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gizmo's quality is crap. Just aweful.
- mspice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Who cares? Forget Skype. Use Gizmo or go get a SIP or IAX adapter/phone and sign up with a provider. Skype is dead and deserves to be punished for their nasty tactics with Intel.

- jsnkc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0People still use traditional telephones?? That's odd....I haven't had one in years!
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My laptops BT stack is a POS, it is really becoming a pain in the ass to try and find the Widcomm drivers to get it to work, arse.
Would love to get my BT headset to comm with it. - garglok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0sweet
- D4V1S, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dont you guys think that the Skype bashing is getting a little old?
