- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is one EVIL company and one ***** revolting piece of spyware. Not just coz it keeps popping up crap, but because of the crap in the license aggreement that leave you totally open to all kinds of charges!!
Why the HELL would anyone digg down the comment above?!
This company is utterly without morals. All I can suggest is that some of their trolls frequent digg in order to bury any negative publicity they receive! I'd quite happily garotte these ***** with piano wire, after what they do to unsuspecting people's systems. - angelb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I also found that the article at Shrockinnovations was invalid and had to go through my hard drive and manually delete files. I had a wonderful experience when I tried to call and cancel my account and I was stuck talking to the same phone ope rater who would not give me a cancellation confirmation number or even send me an email. I asked repeatedly to speak with a supervisor and each time was put on hold and the operator would come back on and tell me no one was available. At first, this same operator refused to give me a name, then I am certain that he made one up. I called back two other times that night and got the same guy with a "different name". I even went so far as to ask him how log they had been running this scam to which he replied, "about 3 or 4 years". So I have had to shut down my bank account, because I have already given them that info and I am also reporting to the FTC. Oh, and by the way, after paying for the license for a program that I never downloaded in the first place it took me to a funky error page every time I actually tried to use the program. This was the point that I used a search engine to find the scam.
- jewels777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just did this today... The pop up was installed somehow on the 4th of May. How, I haven't figured out yet. I tried to uninstall it and got directed to the same website you all have refered to which says nothing about uninstalling it. So like I always do I googled it. Uninstall Movie Pass. From there it took me to http://www.schrockinnovations.com/removemoviepass.php which was very helpful. I cannot believe that they actually get away with this. My profession is with computers and I had a difficult time tracking down how to get rid of this. I called the number to cancel my account and talked to some dick on the phone. He told me to wait for the pop up to come up so I could get my customer number. That pissed me off because he was actually expecting me to sit through another one of those terrible pop ups. He easily could have told me to go into Add/Remove Programs and attempt to uninstall it in order to get my customer number, but no... he's a dick. So I called back with my customer number. He cancelled my account and told me to reboot. I asked him if I should reboot now, because I know that there is nothing that he could have done right then that would uninstall this off my computer. So he then with a crappy attitude says.... uh yeah... if you want the pop ups to stop. I started to be a smart ass right back and that little ***** hung up on me. I could not believe that not only were these people scaming millions of people and getting away with it, but they are also dicks. So, just like I had suspected nothing was removed from my computer after the reboot. So I called again. This time I got someone different that actually helped me and was friendly. Yes thats right, I said friendly and helped. Hard to believe isn't it. So he had me delete Licence_manager folder in program files and then go to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs. This time it actually uninstalls. I rebooted and most of it was off. There were still two shortcuts on my desktop, which I deleted and then I performed a search of my C: for Movie Pass. Three more files showed up which I deleted. It worked so far. These people are terrible. Something has to be done to stop them scamming the people that don't know any better.
- RyanE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea i just recently deleted my membership with these crooks. i'm scared 2 or 3 months from now ill recieve a phone call or something in the mail telling me im going to collections. I've had a mixed bag with the customer support people most are very rude and don't do much of anything. But there have been a few that helped and made me feel possibly everything will be all right. I don't know I'm gonna probably call again tonight to confirm my account cancelation and see if i can get an email from them confirming my account cancelation. I doubt that will happen though. Also for the guy who was trying to use this moviepass crap you need to download the download manager if you want to use it. Its sad that people have to do this just to make a buck or two. Also everyone document everytime that you call them like what they say their name is (even if its fake), what you talk about, and date and time, this way if they try anything else you could sue them for a restraining order.
- brolson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I read through the article at schrockinnovations.com, none of it applied to what I found on my pc. I think they are changing how and what they are doing on the fly. I called them as instructed and they politely "canceled" my account? Whatever!!! And told me all I had to do was reboot. The pop-ups did stop, but how the hell did it get there in the first place! I am reporting to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). I suggest everyone do the same. https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01 I still don't trust that it is un-installed. All I could find in my programs folder was 'license manager' with and exe in it. That I don't have access to delete and it is 50MB That's also all I could find in add/remove programs, clicking change remove sends you to a website that doesn't work. VERY F#$#%D up!!!!!
- Kidtamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also went to Schrock Innovations but, although they are helpful, couldn't really use what they had. I didn't have any of the files they named except "Notifier," (program files) "License Manager" (Add/Remove page..still can't get rid of that!.. and program files), and "fSupport" (program files). I did call and 'cancel the account' first as they suggested. I was told that my Customer ID number was my cancellation confirmation number as well. I was told that the popups would stop but he wouldn't tell me how to get the "License Manager" off my Add/Remove Page.
I couldn't find License Manager on my Task Manager process list so I used a nifty little program called "Process Viewer" and was able to kill the process with that. However, I still couldn't get License Manager off the A/R page! It is still there! Does anyone know how to remove that?? I did report them to the feds as well. It still shocks me to know that they planned to use MY bandwidth for their purposes and pissed me off that they now know more about what is on my computer than I do! These people are thieves as well as perpetuators of spyware and must be stopped. If you haven't reported them, please do. (See Brolson's post for addy) Even though their information is outdated now, much applause to Schrock Innovations! I hope that they can keep up with these jerks! Spread the word to your friends about this spyware and let's put them out of business! Best of luck to all who have to experience this nightmare! - Kidtamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just found another problem associated with Movie Pass. After doing all that I said in my previous post, I ran a search of C drive. It found 85 items, mostly cookies and temporary internet files. When I tried to delete them several times, Windows Explorer crashed every single time!! I ran a program I have called Clean Up! and it found and deleted some but not all. So, I ran a search again and manually went down the list and deleted them one at a time. Also, "License Manager" remains on my Add/Remove page!! By the way, Adaware does find and delete eight items that are named mostly "MediaPipe" not "Movie Pass."
I apologize for the repeat of part of this post. I didn't quite make the time limit to edit it. I guess I'm too flustered from dealing with these A-holes!! - Kidtamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just found another problem associated with Movie Pass. - java06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just had the pop-up come up on my computer today. The website totally sucked, no info on how to uninstall or contact. I finally used a search engine for moviepass.tv and found the following info from lavasoft support forum...thanks, Icopied and pasted the advice for everyones convenience. I followed these steps and it all appears to be gone, including the liscense manager. I don't trust these type of companies though so will be watching closely.
Please See Completely Remove MoviePass Mediapipe Software From Your Computer
QUOTE
*note* If you do not cancel your account with Movie Pass / Media Pipe, you will be billed for an entire year of service (the price varies, but could be as much as $359.88 USD). Further, reports indicate that if you refuse to pay, dispute the charges on your credit card, or cancel in any way that is not in accordance with the MoviePass / Media Pipe cancellation policy, that you will be threatened with bad marks on your credit report. If you have already paid money to this company, it is IMPERATIVE that you follow their directions and cancel your account immediately. To cancel your account, please call Movie Pass about their Media Pipe software toll free at: (866) 431-7720.
so to start with can you cancel your account with Movie Pass / Media Pipe
then once you have done that clear out your cache folder ie: temporary internet folder There are some free programs that you can use that will do that for you if needed like
CCleaner
(Note in CCleaner: go to >options > advanced > Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"). but see CCleaner Set up
also you need to update your version of Ad-aware as you have version 105 please update to Ad-aware SE Build 106
once you have done that use the WebUpDate
to get the latest Definition file
(SE1R107 09.05.2006)
then please can you make sure that you still have “Ticks by these :
"Unload recognized processes during scanning",
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
to do this Open Ad-aware SE
Click “settings” (the Gear)
then Click “Tweaks“,
then click “Scanning Engine”
Tick ."Unload recognized processes during scanning"
Then Click “Cleaning Engine”
And Tick
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
then Click “proceed”.
now use the WebUpDate
(to make sure you are upto date) if you want to clean your PC then scan by doing a "Full Scan" then and once the scan has finished
mark and remove the items then Reboot (ie: Re-start your PC)
Then re-scan doing a "Full Scan" and then post your logfile here by using the Add-Reply Feature .
Also It would seem that you have a cookie problem.
Since you are using Ad-Aware SE Personal, it does not have Ad-Watch which would block them before they had a chance to download into your system.
Here is a link to another excellent program
for you to take a look at Analog X's CookieWall
It is a highly recommended free cookie manager.
You will like it as it allows you to keep/ ignore or always delete cookies from your system.
Once you set it up and got it configured to your preferences and get the "feel" of this program you won't be bothered by cookies again. - Pendejito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you guys are stupid.
- crazycarol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This EVIL Movie PAss drove me nuts and I thank everyone here at Diggs for all the information I read. I also Googled Movie PAss and found you guys. I called the 800 number three (3) times and talked to the same rude, arrogant man. The last time his name was Raol not sure about the first 2 times. I was able to delete all programs from my pc. I called back the third time and asked Raol if he would give me a confirmation number this was indeed cancelled and he said my customer number was my confirmation. Uh yeah that made sense. So I said to him "please let me talk to your supervisor", and he said to me "I am the supervisor", well now i'm hysterical laughing. I asked him then to speak to his Manager and again he said he was the Manager. I then ask to speak to the person he reports to and he had the audacity to say "I don't report to anyone". I then asked him is he owned the company and he said no, well by that time I was do amazed that I just said goodbye and hung up. I have reported this to the FTC and hopefully more people will also report it. This is such an invastion of privacy it's totally unbelivable. But again thanks to all here for their help.
- bsfreed67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 Anyone interested in filing a class action law suit? Has one been started? I'm a victim also and would like something done about it. Let me know.
- rikkismith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To remove the "License Manager" file, after you've called and cancelled your "membership" (866-431-7720), go to your task manager (control-alt-delete) and click on processes. End the process that says "License Manager". Once that process is ended, it will allow you to remove the Movie Pass file from your machine by going to "Add/Remove Hardware" in the Control Panel.
Thanks so much for all your help! I would have never figured out how to get this done without your posts! - RyanE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i hope someone one does sue them. They are way out of line. I think what they need to do that would help a lot of people is put on their ads (which reports indicate that they do not put their name on them) their terms of service. I would not be surprised if in the next few months we hear of these websites being sued. If they try anything with me again i can guarentee you i will sue them. For now im just glad i have my computer back. Though if you do hear any news about a lawsuit keep me updated it would be interesting to see if their bs terms of service would win, or us good ol' consumers.
P.S.
Actually i do remember something on stopbadware.org about someone wanting to start a class action against them. If you can round up enough people, my brother is a lawyer (he doesn't know anything about movieland/mediapipe/moviepass because i havent emailed him since this happened to me) so i guess i could get you guys a lawyer. Hell i might even join you guys in the lawsuit for a restraining order. - Olygirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used the information on this site to remove the program and it worked well. No more popups and they aren't associated in any way with the offending site. I did call, apparently talked to the one rude guy everyone else gets and cancelled but all it seemed to do was decrease the frequency of the popups. I called back today and was told it would take 24 hours to go away. More than 24 hours after the first call I did some searching, found a great site and got the whole thing off my computer. I still have absolutely no idea how this ended up on my computer but I am glad it's finally gone. I may not be a geek but I'm not computer illiterate either so it's nice to see that others also have no idea how it happened. Anyway, here's the site: http://www.profend.com/answers/moviepass
The page also has a link for filing complaints. I can't believe what those people do is legal, especially when it's downloaded itself. There is no way I completed a license agreement without noticing. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr - NDlcy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hi,
so i think there is a possibility i might have installed a suspicious looking download manager that i herd someone say related to this scam, but i am 100 percent sure that i never installed movie pass or any program to use movie pass. I have never entered credit card information on this computer aside from the crutchfied website, which i assume is secure, and i cannot think of ever entering personal information.
the only reason i mention this, is that when i found my computer to have this movie pass software, I simply reinstalled the OS since it was getting mucky anyway, my important files are on a Linux partition and i only use windows for gaming. so this leaves me with no way of canceling my supposed account as is suggested.
do i really have anything to worry about? i cant even think of a way they could contact me - kzion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hi, i just attacked by this moviepass!!! i had some questions if anyone knows. How do they have any of my information and can mess up my credit?!?! even as i installed it, i used a fake name, and thats all i had to put in, they did not get any more info of me. So is there really a way for them to demand money and ruin my credit? What if i do a complete reformatt/reinstall of my pc and start from scratch? this pc is fairly new and it would not be a hassle to reformatt, especially to get rid of this nasty spyware!! Will doing this get rid of the problem??
If anyone knows, please let me know. I appreciate it!
Thankz - KITCATE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have been receiving popups from popcorn for the past month now, and have had no luck removing it. I've tried calling Norton and SBC, with no luck, and I just keep hitting Cntrl-Alt-Del every time it pops up. I will try the shrockinnovations remover, but I was wondering if there is anything else I should do to protect my personal info. The popcorn.net terms of use say that they can access all my info thru my hard drive in an attempt to recover 'payment'. All of my personal financial info is on my computer, and I'm wondering if this is going to escalate into a case of identity theft. At the very least I'd like to know how to protect my credit rating.
I'm can't remember if I initially gave them any of my credit info. I clicked the 3-Day Trial about 2 years ago and just clicked on it again last month, triggering the pop-ups. Does anyone have any advice or more information? - yestayear61, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Had this horrible worm! That bug bugged me to no end! Called 1-800-523-7020 at Microsoft assistance from a techie. Finally after 4 hours on the phone and giving Microsoft control on my computer, and after he downloaded 5 different debugging software programs, an anti-spyware program called "ewido' got rid of it totally! Yeah! Try them online: http://www.ewido.net/en/ they have a free for 30 days downloadable that did the trick! The other programs he tried only checked about 135,000 files. ewido checked almost 500,000 files, and eliminated moviepass. CUDOS to ewido and Microsoft techie!
- jeffschwartz1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had to remove the new version, popcorn, from my dad's computer last night. I work in a law office and we are filing a class action. Let me know if you want to join the class.
Jeff - naruto6302, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0hmm, do u have to remove the damn license manager thingy b4 it stop pop up??
