- craprock, on 12/26/2007, -1/+87Is there any chance that this website will get a review feature? It would be very useful to see what others have to say about the software.
- cgp1024, on 12/26/2007, -1/+50i'm tired of people (erroneously) interchanging 'open source' with 'free'
- dburanen, on 12/26/2007, -17/+53in 30 seconds of perusing, irfanview is not open source. buried.
http://opensourcewindows.org and http://opensourcemac.org have real open source apps - eean, on 12/26/2007, -1/+30They even have Joost, the DRM-laden video service. You can't get less open source then DRM. What a despicable name for what's really an freeware site.
- MWeather, on 12/26/2007, -0/+24Freeware != Open Source
- rnawky, on 12/26/2007, -2/+25I thought http://sf.net/ had this covered.
- aladrin, on 12/26/2007, -0/+17It's not a 'software archive'. It's a list of open source software (and some free not-open-source software) and links to the sites to get them at. An archive would actually maintain a copy of the software itself. Hence the term 'archive'.
- indiekiduk, on 12/26/2007, -0/+13I think this is a list of freeware rather than strictly open source only.
- tidalwav1, on 12/26/2007, -3/+16That may be why Irfanview is in another section underneath all of the actual open source apps in the Graphics category, with the heading 'Others'.
- truspect0r, on 12/26/2007, -5/+16Shared hosting + blog + list of software everyone knows + open source + a 5 day community = instant digg porn.
Marked as spam. - Jyaif, on 12/26/2007, -2/+12"Your OS experience starts here..." is a bit too cocky for my taste.
- MikeyMoose, on 01/30/2009, -2/+10Looks nice, but pretty sparse - I'd say "rocketed" is not exactly the most accurate word in the description...
- slamtv7, on 12/26/2007, -1/+9What happened to sourceforge?
- u2wedge, on 12/26/2007, -1/+9why isn't this blogspam? seems like everything else linking back to personal websites gets buried for blogspam reasons.
- MWeather, on 12/26/2007, -3/+10I prefer http://archive.ubuntu.com/
- AndrewEglinton, on 12/26/2007, -11/+18@MedievalMagic: Thanks very much indeed.
@Phlosten: Thanks. You're right, the community is not huge and it will take time to grow, but with some good will, some link love and above all a high standard of content, I'm hoping it will develop quickly. - baalzebub, on 12/26/2007, -2/+8cool, i like the the categories, better than freshmeat where everything is just thrown in to a big pile...
- madeingermany, on 12/26/2007, -0/+6IrfanView is one of my favorite pieces of software.
I agree, in an OpenSource directory, it should be marked as the closed source Freeware it is.
I still think osliving.com has a lot of value with that one mistake ;) - truspect0r, on 12/26/2007, -2/+8Marked as spam.
- u2wedge, on 12/26/2007, -2/+7why isn't this blogspam?
and aren't they using the photoshop feather as a logo? - clickfire, on 12/26/2007, -2/+7Yeah, IrfanView is freeware for personal use. You actually have to pay for a license if you use it for business. Still cool, though.
- Noctem, on 12/26/2007, -1/+6Yeah, sourceforge and freshmeat pretty much have this down.
- fkr3, on 12/26/2007, -1/+5It's not particularly well structured either.... any 'directory' script would have been much better at organising the data.
- bertboerland, on 12/26/2007, -1/+4using selected WORDS in CAPS and using ! is a SURE way to get some SPAMBAIT
- marx2k, on 12/26/2007, -0/+2Does anyone still do the 'public domain' ideology anymore?
- lovestospooge, on 12/26/2007, -0/+2No software development category?
- billizm, on 12/26/2007, -1/+3It looks like a very nice start.
- webcrumb, on 12/26/2007, -0/+2IIRC, the trouble with public domain is I can take the software, rebrand it and sell it as my own. With OSS I'd at least have to credit it and release the code changes.
- webcrumb, on 12/26/2007, -0/+2You mean this one: http://www.econsultant.com/i-want-open-source-soft ...
- ha1f, on 12/26/2007, -1/+3It doesn't even have SeaMonkey on the browser list. Also, it lists Ubuntu and Linux as two separate entities. No thanks. Buried.
- engelbrechtd, on 12/26/2007, -1/+3Wont call it an archive as such, more just a glorified blog site with links to existing free and open source software available on the internet. sourceforge.net is an archive in my opinion. Offers nothing new & not to original. Ha ha ha, just checking now and why am i not surprised: created by "Great Net Journey" -Your complete blogging solution. NEXT ......
- Noctem, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1You mean OSS created under the GPL. Not all OSS licenses require that.
- baalzebub, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1dont take any wooden nickles...
- newtrip, on 12/26/2007, -1/+2I prefer http://www.osalt.com/ myself.
- smek2, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1So far, Meh. Nothing really new. The usual suspects, most of them already installed. The website itself is, meh. I don't see myself using it.
- mrgono3, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1dude that basically the same list
- molochi, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Sourceforge is one of the few places I'll trust with a free (and actually open sourced) download. This place just links to external pages and not all of them are open sourced. The name and proposed mission are disingenuous so I had to bury it. If they had called the site maybetheresspywareonit.com I would have dug it, 'cause I like the layout....
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Just a note, but the site rather lives by its title and is taking much community input for its direction. If you disagree with something, get on the forum and say it.
- CaponeX, on 12/26/2007, -1/+2All other licenses are invalid. GPL is the only one that matters.
- Mirag3, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Where'd you get that from? And what makes you think those that are would rather host it here?
- TangentTempo, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1I love how the words "open source" are in big, *****-you capitals like anything being open source automatically makes it the greatest thing since anal sex.
- nailer, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1sf.net only mentions Open Source projects hosted at sf.net (which most aren't).
- patho, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1"a freeware site." just sayin'.
- dtzitz, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1sourceforge.org?
- Hedgehogboy, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1I submitted VirtualDub and ClamWin to that site. I demand credit!
- pigfister, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1sweet ty for tidy linkage.
- pedepy, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1I am the only one worried about the fact that alot of those "Open Source" initiatives show no obvious desire to share their source code ? Alot of times you have to search pretty hard to find it, if at all possible. Doesnt that violate the GPL ? .. What happened to just downloading tarballs ?
- FadieZ, on 12/26/2007, -1/+2Looks great, bookmarked.
- inactive, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1Yet another list. Woohoo. :/
- kyelewis, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1Actually I was reminded of the apache foundation logo when I saw it, for some reason. Though you're probably right that it matches the photoshop one more.
