- aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think the best feature is the credit card reader. I would much rather pay for it using my check card than having to carry and doll out cash.
- hagrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Keep all the upgrades ... I just don't want it to cost me $10+ to get from Penn Station to my friends apartment in the 90s. I definitely don't need TV ... my Crackberry will keep me entertained for the whole 15 minutes. If anything, put TVs on the LIRR since getting from out east into the City can take upwards of 90 minutes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed. I hate having to stop at the ATM or carry cash just to pay the fare.
- Mr.White, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Was anyone else a little repulsed at the thought of the touch screen? I'm not a germ freak, but I can only imagine how gross those screen are gonna get.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No worse than the poles on the subway. I am all for developing resistance to these germs. I've never been sick once over the time I've lived in NYC.
- anitab83, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm just waiting for the taxis to also have computerized voice translation.
- Lafftermath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'd be happy with a driver that doesn't smell like a three day old bucket of ass..
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cash Cab is rigged in that they don't just pick up random people. All their passengers have just come from an interview for what they thought was a different reality type show so they're halfway primed for being on-camera.
- drake77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What about upgrading their taxi fleet to hybrid vehicles?
- webtekie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.greencarcongress.com/2005/11/first_hybrid_ta.html
- asauterChicago, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll probably get dugg down also, but Chicago cabs all have CC processing, although the drivers absolutely hate you for using it (I actually had a cab driver tell me he couldn't take my credit card on a $50.00 ride from the airport, I was about to call the cab company and complain, when all the sudden his CC reader conveniently started working again). We've also had interactive touch screen TVs since 2001ish, however, as many posters have pointed out before, I would rather them implement things that would help keep the prices down. It's a cool novelty for tourist, but besides airport rides, it's kind of a waste on a 5 minute cab ride.

You can run a gypsy cab if you've got the $120K+ needed to buy one of the medallions at the auction.
Is it competitive when the city sets a bar to entry? - strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@15charmaxwtf
They do allow people to compete with them -- competitors are usually called "livery" or "gypsy" cabs. Have you ever actually been to New York or are you just talking out of your ass? - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was in a few cabs a few years ago, and was a miserable failure. The only trend that has caught on are dynamic advertisements on top of cabs, localized to different neighborhoods.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would really like it if I could get in a cab, search bit torrent, and start a movie download.
Then, the next time I catch that same cab (happens regularly for me), my movie will be ready to watch. - Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to agree with you. We're bombarded with more than enough headaches as it is. I don't need it when I get into a cab.
- JackOpfor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm this sounds awful. Now when i want a to take a cab someone is gonna make me watch commercials, More than likely advertising companies will pay for these units, so you can rest assured the programming will be on par with the drivel in hotel elevators and airports. Anyway car service is usually cheaper, cleaner and faster if I'm not taking the subway.
- Eihcet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I did a lot of traveling to NYC over the last 2yrs and I agree with others, they should have focused on getting the cabs credit card enabled. Maybe 1:20 or less have credit card scanners today. Also, the article doesn't say how quickly they are rolling out the new cabs. If it's anything like the credit card roll-outs it could be a while before they are widely available.
In fact, you might have a better chance of getting into the 'Cash Cab' gameshow one before hand.
All that said, props to the Cab drivers, they are impressive (scary, but impressive). - Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed with Hagrin. They just updated the fare system and it's costing me an extra two dollars a trip to go from the 100's down to the 30's. We don't need TV's.
- sonaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope they can be turned off. I don't need any more commercials bombarding my brain. I love the surge of information the internet has brought, but there are times I just need to be a human and daze out the window looking at the pretty girls, tall buildings and thinking about whatever the hell else I want to think of.
You know some guy is going to load Bluetooth in the thing and mate it with the GPS to bombard us with ads of stores we pass. - rocketryguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Use a visa, not a check card. Difference? You don't have to suffer through an empty checking account while disputing false charges with the bank.
Not that I think these cabs are particularly a problem, just a good general practice. Banking folks I know turned me on to it. - TomRitchford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When they had them last time, they were annoying and stupid and impossible to turn off (though you could turn off the sound). I made sure to contact the Taxi and Limousine Commission to tell them how much I hated them, and apparently so did a lot of people I know.
Of course, the TLC has one $$$ idea $$$ in $$$ mind $$$ (and I'll bet about 5% of the money will end up in the hands of the hard-working drivers). - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ewwwwww!
What good is TV? (...just a lot of corporate BS designed to manipulate you)
What we really need is access to DIGG in taxis. - DRTED, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BUy a ***** metrocard you fanboys
- DigginTuesday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0London cabs have had TV and credit card processing for a while (Well newer cabs do, there are still plenty of older ones). If your experience is going to be like mine, expect the TV to be sponsored ad's from channels trying to sell DVD box sets, and a four dollar premium if you wish to pay by credit card.
- PDubNYC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They have had video screens before, and it didn't take long for them to get smashed, marked up, or simply not work. Getting the credit card machines to work, getting some hybrid cars out on the road, and keeping the fair reasonable should be their priorities.
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1What about allowing people compete with them?

What is Digg?
