- cromagnone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+47They're just not trying to match the demands of their market, are they? I live in an underwater castle with my army of mutant sharks, so it's useless for me too. Perhaps we should write to the manufacturer? A pre-emptive class-action lawsuit?
- kylemeans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Dollar Euros? Did the US and the EU merge to become the USEU? Or the EUUS? Sacre bleu!
- osuchasenuts, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24False article. Go to the car's website. The poster combined the best of both models and made a super car. The 9second car uses twice as much gas consumption, and costs 15,000 euros. The 11,000 euro car has a 0-60 in 20 seconds.
- Ugli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"With gas now over $3.00 a gallon and rising and probably going to hit $5.00 in a couple of years you think SUV's are gonna be popular anymore?"
Yup, I sure do. Gas here in Canada is what works out to about $4.00 a gallon, and I still see more V8-powered heaps around me than anything efficient on the drive to work. Brand new ones, too, so these aren't just cases of people still owning what they've had for years.
What will ACTUALLY happen when gas hits $5.00 a gallon (or, say, $1.50 a liter up here) is that the whining over prices will just get louder and nobody will do anything to save themselves money. The sun comes up and the sun goes down. - Electric_Sheep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15$11,000 Euros? 11 thousand dollers euros?
Anyway, €11,000 = $13,633.40 US, or £7,623.28 - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Deisel horsepower is _not_ comperable to gasoline horsepower!
Deisel engines put out much higher torque at much lower RPM. Horsepower is _very_ biased toward RPM.
Torque for torque, this thing's on par with your 140 horsepower Honda, at least. I mean, "the GT model will reach up to 135 mph with a 0 to 60 mph acceleration of 9 seconds" -- so at 20 HP, it's at least as good as a honda civic.
You might as well claim that every GPU with 256 meg of ram performs the same. (Hint: they don't) - green67, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19gee.....you think the gasoline lobby will let this into the USA?...and watch their profits go out the window?...
- RexKwando, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14So... what is the hold-up America? Oh yeah, our reluctance of what is best for us.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Yes. Any diesel engine that's properly equipped with fuel feedlines that won't corrode away when exposed to biodiesel can burn biodiesel. For most, it means if your car was built after the 1970s, it'll burn biodiesel just fine.
- konkushn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I just sold my SUV and started hugging the tree in front of my house. It is better than getting a daily colonoscopy from the Chairman of Exxon.
- blahblah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I always wondered. What qualifiers are necessary for someone to be able to evaluate something as "looking like pure BS."
- Joe_rigby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Ah, it has rear-facing seats in the back.
Reminds me a bit of the old days riding around in the back of a station wagon staring at old people.
That was a time when old ladies used their middle fingers a lot more, but it was also a time when I used mine just as much. - Cerebral, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Well things of this nature will spark the GOLA (Gasoline/Oil Lobby of America) and make it illegal to change your car to run off anything but approved DRM'ed gasoline.
- whatinthe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Another car we won't see in North America. Its a shame.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11So? Unless you live somewhere that's vastly hilly or are towing boats, horsepower is just a number to you to sell cars [even with the boats example, torque is better anyways].
Personally I'd love to see this paired with a hybrid brake regenerator, a set of litium ion batteries and a powerful electric motor. You'd add some weight, but you'd gain back a lot of torque, and with a plug-in unit, you could extend your gas mileage even further. - ocbeta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9HP = Torque x RPM / 5252
So, you have high torque, at low RPM then you will have low hp.
Indy Cars = really high horsepower and extremely high RPM = low torque
Ford Diesel = really high torque at extremely low RPM = low HP
So, HP is sort of a number used to compare effect power output. However, where you get it matters a lot.
This car will probably be able to do 0-60 in 9 seconds regardless of what gear it is in! :)
Unlike Civic's you have to downshift to accelerate at all. (that is due to the lack of tq)
BTW Top Gear has said for a while that Diesles are more efficient than a hybrid anyday of the week. - XTrek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Here's some good pics:
www.seriouswheels.com/top-2006-Loremo-LS-Concept.htm - DFchoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Great, another blend of cutting edge design and engineering that will be readily available in Europe in 2 years, but probably won't make it to the US.
- cromagnone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Y'all could just eat less?
- cBennett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7the reason cars that are made in Europe come out in Europe first is because they are generally designed to fulfill safety and emissions tests that are specific to that location. Europe has different requirements for cars than America. Go look a BMW, Mercedes or Audi on the street in the US. Notice that there should be an orange/amber reflector on the sides of the front bumper or in the glass housing of the front lights. European models do not have this orange reflector if it is not inside the light housing and if inside the light housing, the reflective material is white, not orange. It is merely a simple example of specific requirement for cars sold in the US. I realize that it doesn't take two years for a stupid/ugly orange reflector to be added to the car but it's just an example. The most time consuming aspect of bringing a car to the US is the stringent emission laws that California imposes and the fact that manufacturers must do numerous crash tests, which can be extremely expensive if the car has low production numbers or is brought over by a small manufacturer. Also, cars in the US must have a steering wheel mounted air bag, which is not the case in Europe. This year the Gov tightened the requirements and now cars sold in the US must have dual stage airbags, which inflate at different speeds depending upon the car's speed as airbags go off like a gun and have been known to cause serious injury/death. Next year all cars sold in the US must have a front passenger airbag. Ferrari won't be able to sell their F430, their cash cow, in the US because of this. Europe is big on pedestrian safety and new cars must leave space between the hood and the engine block, which is basically a huge block of aluminum (hard), so as to provide more cushion for the pest rain if they are to be hit.
- tnerb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i think that it is using the same 'cell' construction as the smart car.
google video has some interesting (and surprising) videos demonstrating how well it works.

Sign me up. - fiji5555, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8They better let this into the country or face angry mobs ready to string those money hungry ***** up. With gas now over $3.00 a gallon and rising and probably going to hit $5.00 in a couple of years you think SUV's are gonna be popular anymore?
- buddyglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Half the fuel consumption is still damn good. 75 mpg!!
- Mithrander, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I donno man, I think it's time to stop worrying about how powerful our cars are and actually do something about fuel prices/the environment...This thing can reach 100mph, and unless you live in LA, there's not really a reason to ever go above that. Sure, it's slow off the start line, but if it gets you from A to B while saving you loads of cash on gas, I say sign me up...
- darkenin13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6the 20hp means nothing, it does 0-60 in 9 seconds just look here http://www.albeedigital.com/supercoupe/articles/0-60times.html
most cars on the road do that with more then 5x the horsepower
Your also not accounting for the engine size, its only 1.5 liter engine meaning the HP value is worth a much greater value, on top of having a turbo.
But that right there might be the issue, it must be some kind of super turbo, that might eat alot of Oil instead of eating Fuel. :-( I hope not though - Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Petrol comes to about $1.70 per litre - about $7 per gallon, in the UK. So stop complaining!
Yes, I know, we have a smaller country, yadda yadda. Heard it before. - SirNuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They aren't going to worry about it. The diesel that sold is the US is crap (poor grade and contains too much sulphur). Have you ever been behind a diesel burning car who's pipes don't face upward? In Europe, the diesel sold is closer to airline fuel in quality, making the exhaust less of an issue.
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The windows don't roll down?
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, see we need more cars like this right now. I know they are on the slow side, but you can sacrifice performance for fuel efficiency and with a low price point, hopefully this appeals car buyers whenever it comes out.
- buddyglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4With a Diesel you get much more low-end torque than a regular compact car running unleaded. You will have no trouble getting up that climb. Driving my 90hp tdi though Colorado; I had no issues at all.
- U2groupie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I work in a new and used car dealership. Our new cars are SUVs and trucks only (shouldn't take too much to figure out which franchise that is). I also live in Texas, where "bigger is better". The writing has been on the wall for many months, folks. SUV's are on the way out unless you're rich. We can't give the damned things away. Just this afternoon we've had three prospective customers in wanting to trade in their SUVs for economy vehicles. (And they all owed way too much on their SUVs to make trading in for an economy car a stupid choice.)

- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4S.U.V.s will continue to be popular with the people who actually need or use them. They will fall off in popularity with people who own them for poser value.
Despite what many of you city dwellers think there are many legitimate reasons for S.U.V. ownership out here in the middle of the country. - nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4never underestimate the power of human stupidity. combine that with the lure of a status symbol, you've got an unbeatable force.
- spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The poster didn't make any misleading statements. He wrote exactly what the website writes. The faster car doesn't have twice the fuel consumption by the way. The GT goes for 99 miles per gallon and the LS goes for 160 miles per gallon, that's only 60% more gas consumption not twice as much or 100% as you are saying.
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3where are the cupholders?

- cromagnone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah. We all have bad teeth too. And TERRIBLE spelling.
- JeffD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Did anybody else notice how the "gate" openes instead of doors. What happenes if its raining and you need to get in (or out) of your car? You'll flood the damned thing.
That said, its still kind of cool. - XTrek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They are proposing a GT version with 50hp. It will do 0-60 in ~9sec. It has a claimed economy of 88mpg.
http://www.loremo.com/daten_en.php - seandaly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, here's a short list of modifications:
#1. Increase weight by at least 500lbs. (a 7190lb Ford Excursion running into this thing at 60mph would be catastrophic) ***** Giant SUV's.
#2. Increase fuel consumption by at least 100% (this thing is far to efficient to be allowed to fuel up at US gas stations)
#3. Where's the 4WD model? Doesn't it come with a Hemi?
#4. Third row seating!!!
#5. Ample space for the installation of a Gun Rack (The Redneck right would go crazy if they don't have a place to stow a 12 gauge)
#6. Much of country would never buy this due to fears of being laughed at when commuting to / from NASCAR events.
#7. Horsepower!!! Although the average 0 - 60mph times are around 8 - 10 seconds for all US sold automobiles, I think it's illegal for a vehicle to do so without at least having 100HP.
Simply put, the people in this country are ***** morons! - JeffD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not to defend their typo (they should have used the € character), but $ doesn not mean USD it simply means dollar. That could refer to US dollars, Australian dollars, or Canadian dollars to name a few.
- bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"$11,000 Euros"
So which is it? Eleven thousand US dollars(as indicated by your use of $), or Eleven thousand Euros(as indicated by your use of "Euros")? -
