blog.digg.com — Hey everyone - after a couple days of troubleshooting we're finally live with our new comments system. For those of you who have been actively using Digg and requesting updates to comments, the wait is over - much faster page load times, better threading, and in-line replies.

            If you're replying to someone, you should really only be worrying about the person you're replying to seeing what you wrote. If you want 'everyone' to see what you say, then start your own comment thread.

But with all this, it will change. And yes... we all know... I am replying within a reply to a replied message from the original reply from the first comment with was a reply.

            btw, I tried to replying to a comment and it said session expired please refresh the page. Seems like this is a buggy update.

            In those few seconds I realized that it gives session expired error if the nested comment level is >= 5. Someone confirm! But this is crazy *****.

          Yeah. For whatever reason, everybody was bitching about the old system. The old system was 10X better. This new system is JUST like Yahoo. Which means it royally sucks ass.

          A lesson to you people who were bitching: Be careful what you wish for, because you MIGHT JUST GET IT!

            but throwing caution to the wind, I'll agree with you - this new system is flat-out AWFUL.

            really slow, confusing, and irritating number of required clicking and navigating. not to mention all the wasted space with the blue separator bars and the horizontal nesting shift.

        1. On the comments with replies, put a reply button near the text of the comment, maybe in the name/digg bar.
        2. Get rid of the "Hide # replies to this comment" bar and replace it with another button in the name/digg bar. The second bar and the vertical line make the page look too busy.
        3. While you do 2, put in something to show a whole thread. Maybe in the same button as 2, as in click once to hide, click again to show.
        4. Work on load times for viewing replies.
      • nosecohn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I predict that this layout will have a negative effect on Digg overall. The whole thing about the old layout was that you could read and reply really quickly, then move on to the next article. Now, I have to click and wait to load all the replies, and if I want to submit my own comment, the text size in the entry box is too small for me to read. I already find myself reading far fewer comments, and being more reluctant to post my own, than I was yesterday. I think a lot of people will end up feeling that way too.

          Now you have to click 'Expand Full Tree' for all articles, thereby reloading the page again.

There's a way to expand the whole tree, but I don't see where you can set it to do that on every page, which is what devinjohnson2 was talking about. I'll take 2 seconds at load time (which is all it ever took me to load all the comments before) for it to preload ALL the comments instead of having to "fetch" them whenever I click the button.

        By making ONLY NESTED comments hidden by default, It solves the comment abuse. If you want to post something visable to everyone, post at the end... If you want to reply to someone, click and reply.

If the tree is long, I'll skip somewhere in the middle to give some love to the very bottom comments. But this clicking is annoying.           And why the hell are the 'Hide Reply' bars dark blue, and the bar with the comment details in light blue? It should be the other way around, or better still, get rid of all the bloody 'Hide Reply' bars when you click show all.

          Calling me an ***** is much more mature than just clicking the little red button next to my comment though.

        Also, I can't figure how to reply to some users. I think some of the 'Reply to this comment' link/button is missing..specially in the really threaded ones.

      1. Remove the unneccesary (flashy) Ajax. It's really not necessary. You'll save a lot of load time (not to mention my computer's resources) this way.

      2. Take some notes from forum software like vBulletin, e.g. let me specify how many replies I'd like to see on a page. Maybe I'm happy with the first 15, or maybe I like having 100 load at time. Give me more control over how I view things.

      3. Have you guys heard of usability testing? Christ almighty. First thing that comes to mind is the textarea box, it's way too short. The large span for replying sucks too. I know how to click on a link.

      Granted it takes time to adjust to something, especially on a large scale site like this, but seriously, did you even research what the users actually wanted, or did you just come up with something and cross your fingers?

    1) Don't make the "reply" link span across the entire page. I keep accidentally clicking it and am really capable of aiming the mouse at a single word.

    2) I understand the need to not show all 5 billion comments on a page, in order to decrease load times. But you must understand, I'm quite vein. As I'm sure a lot of other Diggers are. I spent an exorbitant amount of time going to threads I've posted on, grepping my own username, then seeing how many diggs my post has, and whether or not anybody's replied. Making my comment invisible means I can't do that as effectively. Would be nice to have an option to sort with threads I'm participating in at the top.

    3) The edit box isn't tall enough. It should at least retain whatever size the comment was at before I started editing.

      Not just colors though. Some text I can search for.

      Evidently newlines aren't parsed correctly in replies. That's certainly a bug.

      Also, I'd like to see all the comments in a thread reload when I post a reply. It's nice to know who's posting at the same time as me.

In many cases the comments fellow diggers submit are better than the article they are commenting on. This new system unfortunately makes navigation awkward. Maybe it just needs a little streamlining and some tweaking, or maybe everyone just needs a little time to get used to it. But I still miss the old system.

        I can already see a huge decrease in comment abuse to the first comment. Not so true in this particular story, but the others actually have sensible replies, and, finally, a fair amount of attention is given to those who start their own comments.

      As for the expanding, go up there to the first comment in here, and look above it on its right. It says "Comment Display Options". Click on it and choose whatever custom options you like. Dan said there was an option to make it expand by default in there, but I can't seem to find it. Meh..
