New Digg Comments System Live!
blog.digg.com — Hey everyone - after a couple days of troubleshooting we're finally live with our new comments system. For those of you who have been actively using Digg and requesting updates to comments, the wait is over - much faster page load times, better threading, and in-line replies.
- 2553 diggs
- digg it
- supernovanights, on 10/11/2007, -51/+624This is madness...
This... is... THREADING!- devinjohnson2, on 10/11/2007, -58/+1007Dare I say it....I prefer the old layout.
- Rizin, on 10/11/2007, -8/+345I agree all this clicking to make things appear is well, Annoying!
- Shutter, on 10/11/2007, -12/+77Interesting... it's something we'll need to get used to, that's for sure.
- sannm, on 10/11/2007, -46/+9And how come I can't respond to the first poster of this thread, I can only respond to the last post of it. This isn't true threading like much like you would find on a message board or even (dare I say) reddit.
- steampunkthames, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15weird
- MikeOSX, on 10/11/2007, -3/+31how deep can the replies go?
- friedcalamari, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8ping
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I wonder what will happen to the GUI when it goes to the right end.
(Let's test it) - Reply me until it goes to the right corner. - davewho, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Level six of this thread - wonder how far it can go?
- ordep, on 10/11/2007, -2/+40this is pretty slow
- Archeologist, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29Still hijacking the first thread?
- mediaroots, on 10/11/2007, -1/+69It's really slow. takes ages to keep expanding everything and it takes ages to load the comments. Bring back the old style!
- ic0n, on 10/11/2007, -13/+57This is gay
- toast1226, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8I guess you can't reply it anymore. Pretty nifty stuff. Looks like several pages in...
- TyroPyro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+835 clicks to see these comments
- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12HAHA everyone is still trying to hijack the first post...
This is as deep as it goes! 5 Levels. good enough - phezz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+57How is something faster when i had to click, wait, click, wait, click, wait, click, wait, click, wait just to post here?
- thebusdriver, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I think ic0n said it
- Clark3934, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28I'm glad it doesn't go any further. But seriously wtf, now it takes like 10x longer to read all the comments.
- staffrocket, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4HAI IZ DIS END OF COMMENT CLIX?
- Akronos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32Annoying. Should be threaded, but we shouldn't have to click to see the comments.
- Jo9100, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6the official deepest: the reply to a reply to a reply to a reply to a comment.
- Meganova, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20To damn complicated if you ask me, the old stuff was way much better
- Jenovaside, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24the old way was better
- defectDS, on 10/11/2007, -2/+65Majority of Digg Users: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -2/+69Seriously, this is the worst idea I've ever seen... my god.. I mean, to get to this level of comments just took me far, far too long. And I'm confident almost no one will read what I'm writing, since it's a massive inconvenience to get here.
Well since nobody will be reading this anyway, the following people are gay....... (insert list) - Alexx3k, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15well I wanted to post a link from an old dugg post to the old dilbert comic with the user interface designer and the "Why did you add this button" caption, but the link had died and I couldn't search the comments for a mirror without manually clicking and expanding every single reply. Oh the irony.
- bastian89, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2Its ok.
- mikev, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4bbq
- Killerdeath, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21do not want.
- BillyWells, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1@ MatttK
"And I'm confident almost no one will read what I'm writing"
If you're replying to someone, you should really only be worrying about the person you're replying to seeing what you wrote. If you want 'everyone' to see what you say, then start your own comment thread. - dgblackout, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10wow, this sucks.
- DesignEx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29This is really annoying, I liked the way the old thumbs up / thumbs down buttons worked better. God forbid you double click and get a pop up.
Bring back the old system. - spammvp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2the bottom now shows a sweater
a brown sweater - zeeky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9whats funny is... most people wont even see this comment because they have to click through 6 View Replies buttons to get to it... i say it sucks. thanks for trying, digg, but this isnt gonna cut it.
- theRIAA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Fetching??? what are we, dogs?
- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2hehe would you rather it say something pertaining to diggin? like excavating ? XD
- MusicalGenius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I reply here to state that I wanted this idea to happen. reply to one person without being at the very BOTTOM of a thing so my reply will be only appropriate to that persons comment in location but HOW they did this....oh wow... what a screw up. But with all this, it will change. And yes... we all know... I am replying within a reply to a replied message from the original reply from the first comment with was a reply.
Thank you. - decay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@mikev
I like bbq.
I just beat the system!
In all seriousness wtf is this?
D00D look at our web 2.0! - billtvshow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sometimes I like to read the comments. There are useful things to be found related to the articles. Not so easy to find anymore :(
- MarkTaiwan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1confusing...
- pifko1987, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Nice one Digg:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v111/pifko/digg.png - norbiu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Nobody will ever see this comment.
- theonlybigboss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4norbiu
i saw it
- Freonce, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I wonder how many comments we can nest?
- Ahnteis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22If you go beyond this level, it just gives you a session error?! Also, the "hide __ comments below this level" at the beginning of EVERY level is too big.
- LoneE4gle, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Session Error?
- zeugma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0This was just a test. No error, though. odd.
- owensoft, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0wow, I think I clicked about 20 times just to read 5 comments
- gverma, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0so i can't comment on nay siblings of this comment ... hmm
- TheBigBrother, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4I'm replying to a reply on a reply
- nevas, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Lets test this guys.... reply here to test the depth it can go...
btw, I tried to replying to a comment and it said session expired please refresh the page. Seems like this is a buggy update.
Again... this is what I get:
Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting.
Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting.
Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting.
Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting.
In those few seconds I realized that it gives session expired error if the nested comment level is >= 5. Someone confirm! But this is crazy *****. - BlackMask, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2replying...
- nevas, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Lets test this guys.... reply here to test the depth it can go...
- Steyr47, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22It just loads a bit slow.
- flernk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Okay, in an effort to reduce comment hijacking, hicaked comments are not infinitely more annoying.
- friedcalamari, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How can I reply to my own comment?
- theblooms, on 10/11/2007, -2/+98"Dare I say it....I prefer the old layout."
Yeah. For whatever reason, everybody was bitching about the old system. The old system was 10X better. This new system is JUST like Yahoo. Which means it royally sucks ass.
A lesson to you people who were bitching: Be careful what you wish for, because you MIGHT JUST GET IT!- DCJoeDogaswell, on 10/11/2007, -26/+3yeah, and we love it, you keep bitching tho, we need someone to laugh at after all
- friedcalamari, on 10/11/2007, -1/+70"This system is filled with more bugs than a rain forest"
- androse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12The simplicity of the old system (restricted to one level of threading) was excellent. This is visually complex, difficult to read. Oh well :/
- ibjhb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I like the threading... just not having to expand each thread to read it.
- Shutter, on 10/11/2007, -12/+77Interesting... it's something we'll need to get used to, that's for sure.
- tony134340, on 10/11/2007, -8/+42Hey kids, let's grow a tree!
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17What's the big deal. Earlier we stopped at level 1.
Now. it stops at level 5. (tree)
Still the same thing, but more confusing.
Follow the KISS principal. Keep It Simple Stupid.- jasnmb, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1test
- ajrahim, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11was the test successful?
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17What's the big deal. Earlier we stopped at level 1.
- supernovanights, on 10/11/2007, -32/+10You know.. leave it to digg users to scream for a threading system, then cry once it comes.
- tonicboy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14People were screaming for a threading system? I don't recall much of any screaming at all. In fact, I never really heard any complaining about the old system at all.
- GeorgeStone, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Lets see how many nested comments you can get!!!!
!
!
!
!
!
!
! - Silencer7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7@supernovanights: "Not like this.....not like this."
case in point: There was no reply button for your comment, so here I am responding to the reply to your reply.
And filling the screen with more ugly blue bars. And boring white space.
Congratulations Digg! - mscman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@Silencer7: you have to hide the replies to tonicboy's comment in order to reply to supernovanights. this new system is too wonky and clunky... not a fan!
And STILL no delete!!!!
- GeorgeStone, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Lets see how many nested comments you can get!!!!
- ihaveplans, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Sorry, but it sucks. I really don't understand what the point of the clicking is. I see no advantage.
- tonicboy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14People were screaming for a threading system? I don't recall much of any screaming at all. In fact, I never really heard any complaining about the old system at all.
- Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+69I concurn! Less clicking is needed in the comments!
- mattprice, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Go to the top and click Comment Display Options, then Expand Tree.
- Bamborzled, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10You still need to click twice. TWICE! And when all the comments are expanded, it's as confusing as hell because of all the "hide" links".
- Joga5000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Dude, you rock. Now we don't have to keep clicking... but it's still confusing as hell to figure out who's replying to who.
- Salmar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Wait, where the hell am I? All I see is a ***** of nested ***** and I have to scroll back to remember who the bloody hell wrote the reply to the reply to the original reply... boggles the mind how stupid this is... and I didn't even put this where I wanted! Joy.
- rhinopig, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1well, atleast I can finally do this and have a slightly higher chance it will be read by who I want to read it...
@RHINO2 Why are you Rhino2? I am rhinopig11! - tyywebb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Where is teh comments I made? Can anyone finds them?
- mattprice, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Go to the top and click Comment Display Options, then Expand Tree.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/11/2007, -19/+3We'll get used to it.
- avihappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I't just so weird!
EDIT: OOHH, Ajax comment submission! - andrewthrice, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2ajaxified
- thecompkid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5a-crap-afied is more like it
- avihappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I't just so weird!
- retral, on 10/11/2007, -0/+54I really hate the "Show/Hide replies" buttons below comments, it just makes the site look bad
Honestly: http://www.filehive.com/files/0621/diggcomments.png ?? How can that NOT look bad? - CraigCarlyle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+56Hopefully they'll have some sort of option to go back to the old style.
- siszam, on 10/11/2007, -3/+79Fetching my ass. Way to screw up your site.
- MyNameIsJoe, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Well at least we'll never need to hear the phrase "sorry for the first comment spam" again.
- Meganova, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0First comment to your comment ;)
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26It gets a bit confusing..... something is not just right.
- loconet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Confusing is right. May I suggest a "parent" link?
- carguy84, on 10/11/2007, -3/+45THIS SUCKS
- AmnestyGenocide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting.
yup
- AmnestyGenocide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting.
- mfearby, on 10/11/2007, -14/+2This is actually better. No more having to load a whopping, great, big comments page. You can just drill down and see the comments in the thread you're actually interested in. Kudos!
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I often find replies that are more interesting and insightful than their parent. Missing those because they're buried under a crappy comment is a good thing? Like mine to yours, for instance.
- duckfigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1careful, criticism may get your account banned for abuse.
but throwing caution to the wind, I'll agree with you - this new system is flat-out AWFUL.
really slow, confusing, and irritating number of required clicking and navigating. not to mention all the wasted space with the blue separator bars and the horizontal nesting shift.
- duckfigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1careful, criticism may get your account banned for abuse.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I often find replies that are more interesting and insightful than their parent. Missing those because they're buried under a crappy comment is a good thing? Like mine to yours, for instance.
- lukee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Fetching 14 replies to this comment...
- DeathfireD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31I feel like I'm playing a flash game "See how many items you can click in 60 seconds!".
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22This is probably the worst comment system ever created! It doesn't flow at all and it looks horrible when it is fully expanded. I liked it better before even without nested replies.
- Salmar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Here is another great comment nested in a reply to a reply I think... I honestly have no clue, as it looks like *****.
- aegis9975, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7This "fetching" thing is annoying. Perhaps they should have a system where comments that are insightful (have 5+ diggs) actually show up in the reply without fetching.
- eggo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7that's a great idea, too bad no one will read it because they won't click this deep into the tree.
- celkin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Is supernovanights being offensive? Report it.
- tjex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7OMG, I can't stand all the clicking I have to do now!!!!!!!!!
- tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Yeah, threading was much better when you needed a greasemonkey script to do it. We thought we wanted threading, but I think I like @Digger or the script better.
- luigi1015, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I agree. Here are my suggestions
1. On the comments with replies, put a reply button near the text of the comment, maybe in the name/digg bar.
2. Get rid of the "Hide # replies to this comment" bar and replace it with another button in the name/digg bar. The second bar and the vertical line make the page look too busy.
3. While you do 2, put in something to show a whole thread. Maybe in the same button as 2, as in click once to hide, click again to show.
4. Work on load times for viewing replies. - nosecohn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I predict that this layout will have a negative effect on Digg overall. The whole thing about the old layout was that you could read and reply really quickly, then move on to the next article. Now, I have to click and wait to load all the replies, and if I want to submit my own comment, the text size in the entry box is too small for me to read. I already find myself reading far fewer comments, and being more reluctant to post my own, than I was yesterday. I think a lot of people will end up feeling that way too.
- Rizin, on 10/11/2007, -8/+345I agree all this clicking to make things appear is well, Annoying!
- WiZZLa, on 10/11/2007, -66/+6That... is... OVERDONE! ...and CLICHÉD
The only complaint I have regarding comments is that the "2 minutes to edit" time limit is still there; even an extra 60 seconds would be nice.- mtheoryx83, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7a wee bit indecisive, are we?
- devinjohnson2, on 10/11/2007, -8/+456I sure wish you could expand all comments by default.
- ajxx, on 10/11/2007, -9/+16Yeah, this option is missing from the edit profile page.
- rejoined, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23@ajxx I was just saying that earlier. I wish the 'Expand Full Tree' under 'Comment Display Options'..can be enabled by default in the 'Profile' of our user ids/names on the 'Manage Profile' tab, 'Viewer Preferences' area.
Now you have to click 'Expand Full Tree' for all articles, thereby reloading the page again.- threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7>I sure wish you could expand all comments by default.
I wish I could as well.... - PoopStick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7that would be nice...
- threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7>I sure wish you could expand all comments by default.
- devinjohnson2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Exactly, you have click to expand all comments and reload the page again, for all stories. There needs to be an option to do this automatically, for every story.
- malkir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5perhaps not the best option but if you notice the link in your address bar a fully expanded comment view has the ending /all
- rejoined, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23@ajxx I was just saying that earlier. I wish the 'Expand Full Tree' under 'Comment Display Options'..can be enabled by default in the 'Profile' of our user ids/names on the 'Manage Profile' tab, 'Viewer Preferences' area.
- dburka, on 10/11/2007, -15/+53There's an option for that under "Comment Display Options" above.
- JCSaint, on 10/11/2007, -2/+63It would have been nice to hear that from Dburka without having to click twice.
- sannm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+41Yes that nice dburka but I want that "expand tree" thing to be enabled all the time, like an option on my profile.
- imran7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4i wonder how long this can get
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Well... I think he's lying, even if he did post this article(and might work for digg, i dont know). There's a way to expand the whole tree, but I don't see where you can set it to do that on every page, which is what devinjohnson2 was talking about. You have to do it for every page, which is annoying as hell.
- tonicboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12And one more thing. Is it just me or is it not possible to reply to a comment that has already been replied to? Foe example, I want to reply to dburka above but there's nor link for Reply. Damn, this whole thing sucks.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@ tonicboy
look lower. it's there for me at least - 00011000, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2I actually quite like it. In fact, I like it a lot. It allows me to get in involved in a discussion whenever I feel like it and doesn't make me feel as though I'm late to the game when I'm not there at the very beginning.
- masterskill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Even when you do that, it still sucks.
1. You have to do it every time a page loads up, then wait for it to load a second time, and
2. It's still damn ugly. Bars and colours everywhere.- quadvods, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9This is so slow and rubbish... what a mistake. Could possibly be the biggest web 2.0 mistake ever.
- JCSaint, on 10/11/2007, -2/+63It would have been nice to hear that from Dburka without having to click twice.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29I like being able to have it not expanded when the page loads, but it needs to preload these comments. I'll take 2 seconds at load time (which is all it ever took me to load all the comments before) for it to preload ALL the comments instead of having to "fetch" them whenever I click the button.
- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4The option would be nice, but I can see why they don't do it... at least at this point.
By making ONLY NESTED comments hidden by default, It solves the comment abuse. If you want to post something visable to everyone, post at the end... If you want to reply to someone, click and reply.
If you don't like this, you probably prefer to abuse comments. -_-- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4What if you peruse the parent comments before posting something you want visible by everyone, then start reading the replies to find out your comment has already been made by 20 other people? Doesn't that make you look like an *****?
- vtmn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Yeah, the fetching thing is ridiculously horrible. Although, I could see why they'd want to do it server-load wise.
- BritishGolgo13, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6No, not everyone likes to comment abuse. Me for example, I like to read the funniest replies at the top. If the tree is long, I'll skip somewhere in the middle to give some love to the very bottom comments. But this clicking is annoying. This is how spoiled we have become with broadband and teh internets.
- hoppdawg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Oh my God this ***** sucks.
- soopafly, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Wow..the usability of this site just shot down by 50% Too much clicking around to view comments
- ajxx, on 10/11/2007, -9/+16Yeah, this option is missing from the edit profile page.
- lhnz, on 11/08/2007, -25/+384This is ***** awful. Pardon my langauge.
- fractured, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25It loads too slow
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Don't worry, sometimes swearing is appropriate.
So, apparently I have to reply to your comment instead of the one you replied to, which is actually the one I want to reply to. *sigh*
And why the hell are the 'Hide Reply' bars dark blue, and the bar with the comment details in light blue? It should be the other way around, or better still, get rid of all the bloody 'Hide Reply' bars when you click show all.- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Told me my session had expired or something while I was editing, but I was going to suggest adding the 'Hide reply' button to the comment detail bar of the parent comment next to the thumbs if they insist on not getting rid of them.
- andrewthrice, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5agreed, the hide-reply bars need to go, or be repositioned
- vudicarus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4yep. kind of defective that i can't directly reply to Ihnz or fracture . . . surely this will get fixed
- xino, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1@spudnic You could have replied to lhnz by going to the end of the replies towards his comment and then putting a comment there. They really need to change that. You shouldn't have to go all the way down just do to that.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Don't worry, sometimes swearing is appropriate.

- fractured, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25It loads too slow
- Wooglar, on 10/11/2007, -25/+7You can. Comment display options>show all.
- koven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+35It's annoying to have to do that on every story though. An option in the settings to automatically display all comments would suffice.
- supernovanights, on 10/11/2007, -12/+0I think you missed the whole point about "Default"
I also think you missed the whole point about replying to replies.... way to reply to me, *****.- Wooglar, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I did overlook the "default" in his comment. Edit wasn't available when I caught that. I assume that is why I'm getting dug down. Yes, I clicked the wrong reply button. This is new to me too.
Calling me an ***** is much more mature than just clicking the little red button next to my comment though.

- ScottAG, on 10/11/2007, -7/+252It was so great before. Digg, Simple Is Best.
- rejoined, on 10/11/2007, -0/+43No offense to anybody or Digg, but this is confusing the ***** out of me. I am having a hard time figuring out who replied to whom (though if I concentrate hard enough, I can actually..but not without a mild headache).
Also, I can't figure how to reply to some users. I think some of the 'Reply to this comment' link/button is missing..specially in the really threaded ones.- xino, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It isn't missing in the threaded ones. It's at the bottom of the thread. Hopefully they change it.
- venir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The problem I see is that you cannot reply to a parent once someone else has replied to their comment. In other words, I cannot reply directly to ScottAG's comment above because it has already been replied to.
- Ostermayer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You have to expand a comment before Replying to it.
The check spelling and submit comment buttons cover the clock below.

GIVE US BACK THE OLD LAYOUT. - DarkReign16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What the *****, you can reply to replies now? And to see replies in the first place you must click "see replies" and then click "see replies to this reply" ? And then someone could then reply to the reply that I replied to? And have to click even more VIEW REPLY buttons!?? Sweet Jesus!
And I'll never know if this gets dugg up or down, because I'm afraid I'll get lost if I go looking for my comment once I exit this page...

- h4mx0r, on 10/11/2007, -4/+52I'm loving the new Reply comment box, but I honestly prefer the old way where most replies were automatically shown.
- akshay626, on 10/11/2007, -1/+92awful, it takes to long to open up all the replies.
- Slog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3If people would understand the purpose of this and stop simply replying to the first comment to get to the top of the list, then it wouldn't take so damn long!
- muzzle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I would assume thats why they did it (the style change). However, it truely does suck. EXPAND ALL BUTTON REQUIRED PLZ!
- NikoKun, on 11/08/2007, -32/+11You people complain too much... This is supposed to stop you from abusing comment tree structures, in order to get higher up on the list.
Why does everyone hate change so much... You'll get used to this, and it will work better for you in the end...
And solemnraven, welcome to my blocklist... This is WAY better than /. but that being said, digg and many sites like digg, own a lot to /.
Course then again, all of you that say you hate it... are probably just a bunch of comment abusers, that miss being able to abuse the comment tree system. At least now your stupid posts wont be visible unless you post AT THE END of the page, like your supposed too...- enki25, on 11/08/2007, -2/+5I agree. It's a little weird right now, but in time we'll get used to it. Personally, I think the lack of threading in the previous comment system was a major shortcoming.

- speedemonspecv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Oops, clicked wrong link. Just goes to show how intuitive this system is (not).
- avihappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3NO! NOT THAT!!!
- apache2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+45PROGRAMMERS: --- in the mean time.... if you put /all on the end of a digg.com url .. ex:
http://digg.com/tech_news/New_Digg_Comments_System_Live -->
http://digg.com/tech_news/New_Digg_Comments_System_Live/all
it expands all of the comments [ this is what the expand link does ]
So........ I'm proposing someone out there that knows what they are doing writes a GREASEMONKEY script to append /all to the end of all digg URLs.
anyone with me?- speedemonspecv, on 11/08/2007, -8/+1Why don't you write it yourself?
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Here it is:
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/10098
http://digg.com/tech_news/Greasemonkey_script_to_show_all_comments_on_digg- lolhax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thank you for that. It's fine for what its worth (refreshing the page after it has finished loading). I'd still wish that the Digg staff made a user-changeable setting for this somewhere.
- adude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That one has some bugs, here's mine: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/10101
Hopefully these scripts will get digg to notice the problems in the new system - logic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks for fixing the @include list, but the truth is that loading every page twice is just intolerably slow. The redirect needs to be done before the page loads; Firefox extension, anyone?
- adude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That one has some bugs, here's mine: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/10101

- Bamborzled, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1For those without Greasemonkey (like me), I hacked up this bookmarklet. It works for me in Firefox and will work for as long as Digg uses jQuery:
(triple-click the next line if you can't see it all)
javascript:jQuery(".comments").each(function(){jQuery(this).attr("href",jQuery(this).attr("href")+"/all");});void(0);
Copy that, create a new bookmark, and in the "location" field, paste.- Bamborzled, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Also, I'd like to add that this affects ONLY the links to comment pages, and you'll need to click it every time you're on a new page.
- geekologist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+33This one hurts my eyes.
- 00011000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+41Suppose the reason for this new system is to encourage more "discussion" rather than tons of random comments.
Visually however, it's an absolute mess and WAYYY too much space is wasted!
Where did the information design go? - devinjohnson2, on 10/11/2007, -4/+52This is so ***** confusing when you get deep into comments. BRING BACK THE OLD VERSION!
- HalFTW, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Just use the old version and implement the greasemonkey nested comments for everyone. It's slower than it was before. And there is still no delete button. :|
- DynamiteMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+42Opening to read 26 comments as with this thread is something I might bare, but when the comments have 50+ different posts, each with their own replies, I simply don't feel I would bother. Am I alone on this?
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Yeah, really. It's a chore reading the comments in this thread... I feel very discouraged about reading any comments on any articles now. I don't want to dig through comments but I also don't want to miss anything... so the easiest (on my brain) way is just to never read comments again, as stupid as that sounds.
- Bamborzled, on 10/11/2007, -4/+24The old version was actually easier to read. And after I bury a comment and try to re-open it, it just closes on itself automatically.
But the sliding animation is fun! - renegadeafk, on 10/11/2007, -17/+4Well it's sexeh, but dead slow. And I also get the burying bug described above.
- ub3rgeek, on 11/08/2007, -0/+9no its not even sexeh. it is ***** ugly and slow. and WAY to cluttered. Too many lines. We need to go back to digg 1.6 days.
- user777, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13i too like to old comment system. suggestions for the new one:
1. Put the "reply to comment" higher (on the top) so that it doesn't occupy another line of space.
2. Same with "View x reply"
3. Smooth the (anti alias?) font after fetching. Fonts look rough here.
4. Display all comments by default. ie. don't have to fetch. - rpgmaker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Just let me CHOOSE the comment system style in the options please.
- voodooVince, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I for one welcome our new Slashdot comment threading overlords,

- fxspec06, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I, for one, am weary of our new space-taking, time-consuming, royal-PAIN-IN-THE-ASS threading system. BRING BACK THE OLD DIGG KEVIN!!!
- themastersb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Is there a way to expand full tree and see all the comments at once and still be able to reply to them and keep it that way without having to click on the "comment Display Options" at the top of the screen each time. Until there is.... old system FTW
- kakalaky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Definitely needs an option for expand full tree by default.

- duckfigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1super slow. and every up/down thumb comment click locks firefox for about a second (2.0.0.4 on Slackware)
incredibly irritating.- JimDinger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Man I would digg you up,but well,I hate having FireFox lock up and just have the hand cursor sitting there.
- duckfigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1super slow. and every up/down thumb comment click locks firefox for about a second (2.0.0.4 on Slackware)
- aks123, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11) Get rid of the "View _ replies to this comment, most popular has _ diggs", just put a green arrow there, and the number of replies.
2) Don't space out the comments so much
3) Make the thumbs up/thumbs down buttons smaller
4) Separate comments with thin blue lines instead of giant blue rectangles with names in them
5) Get rid of the "reply within a reply within a comment" feature, just keep the commenting to two levels like it was before, so it's not so confusing - aks123, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Edit: Oops. It's so confusing that I ended up posting twice.
- Fordi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I must say that it would be nifty if the highly-dugg first-level replies were visible without having to expand them out.

- sola, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Everyone has said this before, but I'll say it too. It's too much time and work just to read a single thread.
Remember, we're information whores. We grimace at news stories that are broken up into two pages. We practically commit hari-kari when a top 20 list has twenty pages. And now, we have to click a whole bunch of times to see all the comments. I feel like I'm drinking from a coffee straw...
Sorry you put so much time into it, but please go back...- kenok, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree, its taking too much time to wait, than just reading and digging/bury comment replies.
But i like the reply form display/behavior change.

- mikesbaker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Jagula and many others
a want from a certain vocal group of diggers who usually use reddit caused this abomination. digg didn't need to rip off their comment system and make it worse. reddit sucks ass. if I wanted to be on reddit I would be but I am a digger damnit.
@kevinrose
don't fix what isn't broken. if you don't fix this soon I predict a major fall out. DON'T MAKE THIS BE YOUR JUMPING THE SHARK MOMENT (and yes I was yelling) - OrlyonokEaglet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1We can't search the text of all comments anymore. How do you quickly find all links in all the comments? Impossilbe?
- shadus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is ***** awful. Worst... threading... system... ever!
- gummih, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What a totally horrible waste of space. Three nested one line comments take about 20 lines of space??! WTF?!
Just keep it the way it was, but in a tree, that's all. - Snuff99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Maddness?...THIS IS SPARTA!!!!
- tonich03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm just replying to say that this is awful. If I was new to DIGG I'd be put away by this design, it's not practical.
- dineshbabu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is exactly why I hated slashdot and I jumped on to Digg ! Threaded comments are hard to read !
- devinjohnson2, on 10/11/2007, -58/+1007Dare I say it....I prefer the old layout.
- leahculver, on 10/11/2007, -118/+11Great work! Testing it out now...

submitted minutes before yours.- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7how about not
it doesnt matter if its a dupe as long as it gets here
and not to mention I saw the feature before it became popular
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7how about not
- eedge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22... or not.
The extra time it takes "fetching" replies, really puts you off from bothering to read the replies instead of the threads.
Plus the more nested replies to replies get is the less I'm going to be bothered to wait to see them.
Because of this, I don't like it.
It overcomplicates, and actually puts me off reading replies. - eedge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Actually, I was not meaning to sound too negative... I do like being able to reply to a comment, it's just the fact these are hidden no matter how high they have been dugg by default that bothers me. And then ontop of that the amount of time it takes to reveal these replies!
edit: I guess I should have done that as a reply to my original comment; please allow for learning curve, ha :-) - N1NJ4hippie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@leahculver
let me finish that for you
Great work! Testing it out now...Uggh. Great work? - perryge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11And you can still give multiple thumbs up to a comment by clicking really fast...
- perryge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Oh, never mind :P, that got fixed real fast.
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5There's a bug with this new system.
If you buried the parents, you cannot view the replies to the parents. - praveens, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Sorry buddy, i wanted to check out how the offensive reporting worked..it never gave me a chance to cancel my report..it sent it right away
- datastorageguy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I buried the parent and had to time it just right to show the comment and click on replies. Is this bizarro world digg?

- MrPresident13, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5Hey Daniel, use the search function.
- alex.will, on 10/11/2007, -75/+23It's nice to have this back. That sneak peek the other day was so cruel ;-)
(Does anyone else notice that the digg up/down thumbs are stretched and pixelated?)- dburka, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26I think you just need to refresh. Your browser is probably caching the old icons.
- ninxmz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Oh. Thanks for that. The buttons look much better now. :)
- crazedgremlin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1nice catch, dburka
- dburka, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26I think you just need to refresh. Your browser is probably caching the old icons.
- dougbarrett, on 10/11/2007, -20/+657Is it me, or does it seem slower with this new system?
- Wooglar, on 10/11/2007, -13/+44Its faster for me during the initial loading of the page. It always bothered me when I had to wait for the comments/replies to load. Now I can choose which ones I want to see.
- WallyAnti, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Same here. This is moving in the right direction. The only threads that lag for me are the ones that are 10+ comments long. Aside from that I am pleased.
- joestump, on 10/11/2007, -27/+8It'd be difficult to believe that it's slower since we're sending about 1/10th the HTML we were before, we're using caching on the backend, etc. It should be a huge win for people complaining about loading huge comment threads.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16How about giving the option?
I like to just scroll down a page and read the comments, this new system is awful for that.- FearNLoathing, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8PLEASE do this. I can't stand clicking "View replies" 300 times just to see comments. Can you make it a preference to have all threads expanded (within the rating threshold)?
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6There is an option at the top of the page, but it makes it look ugly as hell.
They need to remove all the 'Hide Replies' bars when you click view all, they take up half the page.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6There is an option at the top of the page, but it makes it look ugly as hell.
- FearNLoathing, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8PLEASE do this. I can't stand clicking "View replies" 300 times just to see comments. Can you make it a preference to have all threads expanded (within the rating threshold)?
- mroboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Yes, the option to choose the old system vs. the new system would be a good thing.
- TheUnashamed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4One thing I don't like is if I bury a comment, I can't see comments in its thread without clicking 'show comment'.
What if I don't like an initial comment but want to see the responses to it?- muffinmanpoo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Maybe that's a good thing. Perhaps that will be incentive for people to click reply on the comment they're actually replying to instead of just trying to get on the top of the page.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16How about giving the option?
- beastlrd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+128The concept was good but the implementation was horrible. It looks ugly and is incredibly slow. Personally i prefer the old system
- nandasunu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23agreed.
- DCJoeDogaswell, on 10/11/2007, -14/+7well, I think it's a tremendous speed boost, I use forefox on Ubuntu and digg has been majorly slow for a long time, so slow we had to block most of the images on the site with adblock to speed the site up
this new comment system keeps the site slim and trim- mscman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9When they mention slow, they don't mean page loading. It takes forever to click "Show XX replies to this comment"
- Lick, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17copy of agreed.
- Dested, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9wrong topic
Why still no deleting? Even like just a couple seconds after.

- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -1/+60You have to love it when you load the page and you have to load each reply separately. Very very dumb.
- crazydiode, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1exactly. now for a heavily commented article JUST to read the comments i would have to click a hundred times...
- FetalSage, on 10/11/2007, -22/+5Getting the comments is a little slower, but digging someone down seems a little faster for me. At least the transition from comment being viewable to hidden.
- jcounterman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4But when you digg down a moron, you automatically hide all the comments from people calling him/her a moron...If somebody makes a dumb statement, I'd still like to see the intelligent comments of those who are responding.
although not reloading the page after each comment is very nice.

- masamunecyrus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13It's a bit slow, especially loading threaded comments. I'd like to see it pre-load the first 10-15 comment threads so that they'd pop up instantaneously.
- joestump, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7This is already in the code, but turned off. We're listening to all of your input. I'm sure we'll be tweaking things a bit here and there after the dust settles.
- MannaPC, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Tweak faster, I was already getting pissed enough at some of the crap going on with digg, and now this =.... Why couldn't digg have stayed small and more geek oriented? Quality over quantity...
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised it works at all with all this ajax ;o)
- joestump, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7This is already in the code, but turned off. We're listening to all of your input. I'm sure we'll be tweaking things a bit here and there after the dust settles.
- pifko1987, on 10/11/2007, -13/+0Slower? No, for me it's super quick now. For example, This story:
http://digg.com/celebrity/Jessica_Alba_wants_one_night_stands_to_experiment_with_sex
took over 2 minutes to completely load before. Now fasterfox reports 14 seconds. - knomevol, on 10/11/2007, -1/+47i do not like this.
- MannaPC, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18DO NOT WANT!
- homeagain1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36Also try to go to an old story with 100+ replies on first thread... it takes minutes to load the thread... Sorry this new system has some pros, but overall it's pretty trash.
- HigherLogic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32Yeah, this is much slower than before. I'm just watching the status bar continually loading things. A couple suggestions to Digg:
1. Remove the unneccesary (flashy) Ajax. It's really not necessary. You'll save a lot of load time (not to mention my computer's resources) this way.
2. Take some notes from forum software like vBulletin, e.g. let me specify how many replies I'd like to see on a page. Maybe I'm happy with the first 15, or maybe I like having 100 load at time. Give me more control over how I view things.
3. Have you guys heard of usability testing? Christ almighty. First thing that comes to mind is the textarea box, it's way too short. The large span for replying sucks too. I know how to click on a link.
Granted it takes time to adjust to something, especially on a large scale site like this, but seriously, did you even research what the users actually wanted, or did you just come up with something and cross your fingers?
Well I had more things, but can't remember them off the top of my head. Those are the three biggest ones though.- flarn2006, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14. Enable the profanity filter by default for school viewing (so that filtering software won't block the page and prevent you from turning it off)
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1What the he'll are you talking about?

- NoahK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's not just you... it's quite slower. Ack!!
- HigherLogic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2By the way, it took me 2 beers and 30 minutes to actually remember where my reply was (mainly because of the time it takes to view a reply, and a little bit of the credit goes to the beer), so here's another idea:
Either let me see my last 50 comments (hell, let me see them all, but only show me the first 50 or whatever), or make it pretty damn obvious that I've replied to a comment. I don't need to guess. - johnnyrocket, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Infinite thread replies kind of suck.
I actually liked the limited reply nesting in the old comment system.
Kept everything clean, now this is like slashdot or dailykos. - HigherLogic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3***** it, I actually replied with another gripe, about how I spent 20 minutes trying to remember where I actually replied in this thread, and then while I was trying to edit my post I hit the ***** hide comment link and then my username...so frustrating. I give up.
Here's a good usability test: get drunk and high and see how easy it is to use this site. That should be every site's usability test. - WallyAnti, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2It loads so much faster for me. Now those 300+ comment pages wont lag my system when I preload stories in multiple tabs.
- Wooglar, on 10/11/2007, -13/+44Its faster for me during the initial loading of the page. It always bothered me when I had to wait for the comments/replies to load. Now I can choose which ones I want to see.
- alex.will, on 10/11/2007, -39/+184Cool. The digg up/down thumbs look messy to me.
- joestump, on 10/11/2007, -3/+36Shift+Refresh. You're getting the older (smaller) digg/bury images. The newer ones shouldn't look pixelated.
- tapo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I don't know what browser you're using, but on Firefox 2 it's control-refresh (F5). Not shift.
- _Caboose_, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Shift + Refresh worked for me on Firefox 2.0.0.4.
- Light11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1still looks weird to me.. after clearing cache and refreshing and visiting the site at diff times...
- DanAtkinson, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1You've done great work here, Joe! Well done!

- Stopher, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1How do you do that?
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I think the new ones look extremely ugly... the newish colours just hurt my eyes altogether really.
- osbjmg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yes, but that's an easy fix. I am really glad the main comment page loads up crazy quick though! I am not nearly as angry anymore because I don't have to read through all the silly lower level replies.
- joestump, on 10/11/2007, -3/+36Shift+Refresh. You're getting the older (smaller) digg/bury images. The newer ones shouldn't look pixelated.
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -5/+200Ehhh... it's ok. I like being able to reply to a reply, but everything seems more spaced out, and I like being able to scan through all the comments by default. Is there a way to display everything?
- lethalpotato, on 10/11/2007, -15/+10Yes, there are comment display options at the top of the comments.
- IvanB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31But we're talking by default here mate. I don't feel like expecting all comments everytime.
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1Your stupid, that is the way it has always been.
- Abulia, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2don't you mean You're ?
The irony... - appleswitch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2he means expanding the threads, not expanding dugg down comments you don't want to read anyway
- IvanB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31But we're talking by default here mate. I don't feel like expecting all comments everytime.
- rcran, on 10/11/2007, -0/+49But I want it as my default...
- hbweb500, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24I cant find my previous comments as easily now. I think Digg should have a profile option to list all your previous comments and their diggs.
- duckfigg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5down-thumbing a comment closes replies to that comment as well?
that's just stupid.
- duckfigg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5down-thumbing a comment closes replies to that comment as well?
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3@lethalpotato
have no idea why you got dugg down but what he says is correct. Use expand full tree at top to see all comments- o0joshua0o, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Where is "expand full tree" at the top? I dont' see anything like that.
- mattxb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I think it would be better if it automatically showed all the comments and then you could hide threads that you don't want to look at. Maybe I'll like it if I get used to it, but it seems like to much work just to read comments
- WaterDragon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1but then it wouldn't address the issue of so many comments making the entire page load more slowly. Taht is why it is set to the faster loading time, by default. Yet, I agree, it might be nice if we could choose our personal default setting in our own profile. (But would choosing the longer load time have an effect on the digg servers, or just on our own experience?)
- Hochler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2No it wouldn't, just change the design of the page. Look at reddit as an example, no matter how many comments, it still loads fast.

- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yes, I don't think it's a big deal. All that's needed is really saving the display options. Hopefully that can be sorted soon -- it doesn't sound like an enormous additional thing to carry in the user profile. ;)
- VeganG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Agreed, pleeease make the setting saveable.
- lethalpotato, on 10/11/2007, -15/+10Yes, there are comment display options at the top of the comments.
- alex.will, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31Wow... Sorry for the dupe comment, but when I refreshed it looked like my other comment wasn't submitted. This is strange, it seems like comments take a while to register... I still can't see the second comment I submitted.
- simondotcalvin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Which could by why there's a notice right next to the submit button that says "Please allow up to 60 seconds for your comment to be saved."
Call me crazy.- alex.will, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Never happened with the old system.
- Bamborzled, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That behaviour is unacceptable. I'm one of those people who leave a comment and immediately navigate to another story. I don't want to wait for 60 seconds.
- audiowizard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree, leaving the browser page alone for 60 seconds is like taking the internet back to the days of 14k modems, wtf?
- astrosmash, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Don't apologize. This comment system is horribly broken and full of functional and usability bugs.

It does solve many problems, such as thread hijacking, but! it adds more problems.- LouisC, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I don't like the "fetching". I can deal with it for like the reply to a reply to a reply to a comment but not for the reply to a comment.

PUT IT BACK THE WAY IT WAS! That or make an option to allow us to set how we want the posts!- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -12/+14There is the option.... Click "Comment Display Options" > "Expand Full Tree"
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Holy crap. I much prefer having all the comments, but damn showing it like that really exposes how ugly it is now. no wonder it's off by default

- Archeologist, on 10/11/2007, -13/+19I like it this way. The old way just had everyone hijacking the first thread. Now things are more fair. If this was the old style comments, I might not have even noticed your comment.
- jcounterman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Are you kidding? There are like 5 top-thread comments and i'm more than halfway down teh page. Now the ulitmate in highjacking is taking place, where thousands of sub-conversations are taking place before you get to the next reply from the top-level comment. This is terrible
- Archeologist, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I don't have to look at them if I don't want to anymore. That's the big difference. Now I have a choice.
- jcounterman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Are you kidding? There are like 5 top-thread comments and i'm more than halfway down teh page. - BillyWells, on 10/11/2007, -13/+7I don't mind clicking. Overall it's more organized this way and easier to have/follow conversations.
- jamesarice, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2I agree. This new system is great IMO.
- DCJoeDogaswell, on 10/11/2007, -11/+1heh, he says this as if he owns the site, what a loser
- WallyAnti, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Sorry but I disagree. This system is much more fair to posters and is better organized. This may not be the best way to thread (slashdot is better) but the old system was beyond garbage and was only really useful to people who sit and wait for stories to just become possible so they can get their opinions out.
Long live digg, long live threaded comments
- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -12/+14There is the option.... Click "Comment Display Options" > "Expand Full Tree"
- masterskill, on 10/11/2007, -7/+297I'd really like an option to go back to the way it was. Threads are nice, but I hate having to click to see the replys. It also seems to take way longer than it should.
- leontes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I agree. Although replying is easier, the whole threading thing annoys me. I prefer it the old way.
- perryge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yeah, I'm on digg for the hilarious comments as much as I am for the stories. At least give the option to set the old view as default
- Imagin8, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1too much clicking my finger is getting sore, i hope they don't waste time fixing the bugs, they should just scrap it , and bring back the old system...
- swordedge, on 10/11/2007, -43/+7I like it.
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/11/2007, -4/+169First impressions:
1) Don't make the "reply" link span across the entire page. I keep accidentally clicking it and am really capable of aiming the mouse at a single word.
2) I understand the need to not show all 5 billion comments on a page, in order to decrease load times. But you must understand, I'm quite vein. As I'm sure a lot of other Diggers are. I spent an exorbitant amount of time going to threads I've posted on, grepping my own username, then seeing how many diggs my post has, and whether or not anybody's replied. Making my comment invisible means I can't do that as effectively. Would be nice to have an option to sort with threads I'm participating in at the top.
3) The edit box isn't tall enough. It should at least retain whatever size the comment was at before I started editing.- Battleloser, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8In regards to #2, some kind of highlight on the parent comment would fix this
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13I should also have some positive comments:
1) I like that the "reply" box pops right under the comment I'm replying to. Makes it easier when I'm quoting or directly replying to somebody.
2) The ability to collapse threads is nice - anagoge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13I especially agree with point two. It's just a fact that if we comment, we like to see what other people think of what we had to say. If all comments are hidden by default, this makes it hard to do that without first clicking on the "Expand full tree" link. You even have to click on a link to *get* to that link. It makes no sense.
- mckirkus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is a performance tweak, plain and simple. They flagged non-reply posts and only search for them which probably speeds page load times compared with the old system. I don't like this much either. Reddit has a better system.
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"some kind of highlight on the parent comment would fix this"
Not just colors though. Some text I can search for.
Evidently newlines aren't parsed correctly in replies. That's certainly a bug.
Also, I'd like to see all the comments in a thread reload when I post a reply. It's nice to know who's posting at the same time as me. - DivisibleByZero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Given that they forgot to turn the newlines into their corresponding HTML, lets see if I can post some HTML in my reply too?
bold- DivisibleByZero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Guess not. When navigating subthreads of replies, there's a "reply" box for each level of comments that's open. I'd prefer just one for the lowest expanded level--or whichever level is currently selected.
- diabolicdiablo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I have to say the comment section in Digg is one of my favorite aspect to the website. In many cases the comments fellow diggers submit are better than the article they are commenting on. This new system unfortunately makes navigation awkward. Maybe it just needs a little streamlining and some tweaking, or maybe everyone just needs a little time to get used to it. But I still miss the old system.

- lhnz, on 10/11/2007, -8/+218I really don't like this.
It looks like there are far too many lines everywhere, and the colour scheme is crap. And the having to click to see replys is annoying. The grease monkey nested comments extension did this so much better. X_X- lhnz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+70Oh yeah and clicking on thumbs up multiple times causes a "you can't do that" pop up message rather than just not doing anything.
This is so fugly. - lhnz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Not to mention a 2 second wait after clicking on a hidden list of comments as I wait for them to load. :(
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11The joys of AJAX. See, rather than waiting 10 seconds for the whole page to load, you now only have to wait 2 seconds for each thread to load.
So just don't try to read more than 5 threads and you'll be fine :p.- lhnz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Oh, and it's often longer than 2 seconds. On the thread at the top of the page it took about 5. X_X

- DivisibleByZero, on 10/11/2007, -10/+6At least offer an opinion why you think it's horrible. The old design had its own share of flaws, so it's nice to see that they're trying to work those out. Instead of just bitching, try to make it better.
- Slog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Why is this comment getting dugg down? Did everybody become that bitter when they changed the comment system?
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I think the best trade-off would have been a more streamlined fully expanded view + have that option saved. Right now, the collapsed view is OK as a collapsed view, but with usability problems. And the expanded view is more accessible, but feels like too much spacing and stuff for the UI.
- GaryS278, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2you're such a *****. this blows and everyone knows it. it took me forever to even load all the comments to find yours, digg you down, and then reply
- mlostracco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1And here's a perfect reason why we need the "Block User" button back—not just the report function of the parent poster (which I don't see at all right now in expanded view).

- WallyAnti, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If you guys are using stylish you may need to disable it. The comments were wacky as all hell for me until i disabled mine. Other than that I think this interface is worlds better than the old one.

- tonicboy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Not at all, if anything it encourages more comment abuse because now you can get your reply even more towards the top of the page by replying to replies. And replies of replies. And so on and so forth. Now we'll have the first comment with at least a hundred nested reply levels.
- mittortz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I see what you're saying, but the end result is that this encourages people to start their own comments simply because it will actually be shown automatically. For instance, not many people will likely see this post because they will have to click twice. Considering how long it takes to load every time (something I do NOT like at all), not many people are going to bother looking at the deep replies.
I can already see a huge decrease in comment abuse to the first comment. Not so true in this particular story, but the others actually have sensible replies, and, finally, a fair amount of attention is given to those who start their own comments.

- sittered, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Now if only we could cut down on use of the word "gay".
- tsbardella, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2He is right it is gay as in stupidly gay. Like telling your Sargent you are gay and then going on NPR and having people feel sorry for you. He would not be the first Arabic speaker to be gay. This is not good as in being hit on by a gay man with strange stains on his shirt in the grocery store. no one will see this horrible homophobic post and be offended anyway as it is pre-buried
- IvanB, on 10/11/2007, -17/+7I like how it cuts off long comment trees in sections. Example:

Good job, once again. - nubnub, on 10/11/2007, -17/+170I like the old thumbs up and down icons
- lucianolev, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Yeah.... The new ones just look awful :(
- defectDS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I see the style they were going for, but it does not mix with their color scheme. It is horrible.
- Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10MASSIVE THUMBS
- Krippy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1MASSIVE DAMAGE
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The icons is probably the most minor problem here though.
- eleven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2ugly thumbs more like it... the colours are not quite right. The green is okay, but the dark cool-ish red is kinda ugly. OH AND THE EDIT YELLOW IS AWEFUL... had to edit to express that. "Warm" up the yellow and red :)
- Mike89, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1test... ok.
- tsbardella, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1The new icons look like ***** I mean they really do look like piles of dog doo. either that or really fat combs. But no one will see this anyway the oh also they look like sheep carrying drinks or cats with the fur on their back standing up.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I like the new icons, although I do agree the red is just a tad too dark.
- MasterQ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I liked how you used to be able to cheat by clicking the thumbs up multiple times before it registered :) damn u digg!!!
- dorshorst, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You have already Dugg this comment.
Damn you Digg!
- dorshorst, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You have already Dugg this comment.
- Recluse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah the old icons did look better but everything else about the comment system has been improved. Maybe now I'll actually bother commenting on stories.
- lucianolev, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Yeah.... The new ones just look awful :(
- Battleloser, on 10/11/2007, -7/+49It compresses multi-paragraph replies into big smushy blocks of test.
BL is not pleased. - badbinary, on 10/11/2007, -12/+98this is different, not better. it still sucks ass.
- Flamenmars, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3They could prevent confusion by removing the ultra blue "View x replies" encompassing box, which distracts the eyes when trying to follow a conversation.
- tsbardella, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4DIE new comment style DIE.
- crackah, on 10/11/2007, -18/+6IT still sucks balls.
- xdviper, on 10/11/2007, -91/+4YO WHY THE HECK IS DIGG ALWAYS LOGGING ME OFF WHENEVER I RESTART OR SHUTDOWN THIS ***** LOGS ME OFF WTF
I AM USING FIREFOXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX WITH VISTRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA NOT TIGER VISTAAA MICROSOFT VISTA
NOT APPLE TIGER, ITS MICROSOFT VISTA HOME- Nocturnal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Happens to me ALL the time. I really wish they'd fix this bug.

- Gzero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Someone is stealing your cookies. I suggest mousetraps.
- mscman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Holy crap, you're one of the most annoying people on Digg right now, even more annoying than this comment system...
- PowerLlama, on 10/11/2007, -15/+1I... don't see a difference. Except that there's no longer a reply button.
- PowerLlama, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's because I was sorting by most diggs. I'm dumb.
- carleethian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1are you ***** retarded?
- tomboy501, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27Why is the username of the person that makes the comment listed as having dugg the comment? Seems like a waste of precious real estate. We already know the person who posted the comment gets a default one digg up.
Overall, not sure I like this. Can we get an expand all comments option?- IvanB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Quite indeed on your first point. Although, I like the fact you can now directly click on the name.
As for the expanding, go up there to the first comment in here, and look above it on its right. It says "Comment Display Options". Click on it and choose whatever custom options you like. Dan said there was an option to make it expand by default in there, but I can't seem to find it. Meh..- tomboy501, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Thanks Ivan...I missed that.
Well...I just expanded it...and it looks messy as hell now. I guess it's a toss up between proper threading and the old clean look. Does there have to be so many lines and boxes though?? Ugly.- invader, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I have to agree.. It's waaaay too busy. There are smarter ways to go about this.
Luckily, I only go to the "/blog" section of Digg posts when I follow a link in my reader. I would go nuts if I had to wait for this entire mess to load before being able to read the story.

- meson537, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yes, all this blue field at the bottom seems not so good. Why is there a check spelling? Doesn't everyone use FF2? All this please allow 60 seconds, no html, comments are editable crap is useless on EVERY reply box.
- tomboy501, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Thanks Ivan...I missed that.

- Aliarse, on 10/11/2007, -13/+60Why was my post deleted? The new comment system IS horrible.
Digg now = Lamesauce. Nested comments greasemonkey script is much better then this POC.- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16It probably wasn't deleted, it's just got lost in the mess that is now the comments page. Good luck on your mission to find it again.
- joeydoo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I'm liking the new system. There are over 600 comments on this page and it loads in a second.. rather than a minute. Plus there aren't as much people all just replying to the first comment so they can be at the top of the page
- myranttoyou, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2My comment was deleted too, I think they are deleting the more critical posts.
Which is another problem with the new system, you can't go back to a story and search for your name. It doesn't show up until you expand the right tree. And no way to search for it, since the text isn't on the page. - myranttoyou, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2My comment was deleted too, I think they are deleting the more critical posts.

- garconcn, on 10/11/2007, -17/+1Nice!
- Jennifurret, on 10/11/2007, -5/+103I don't like it. Can we have an option to set it to the old style? Or at least permanently make it opened up?
Not to mention it's pretty ugly looking >_>- Muyoso, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Not to mention the comments are 4 inches apart. WORST use of screen space ever.
- joestump, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You can add /all to any permalink page's link and it'll show everything expanded.
- jull1234, on 10/11/2007, -4/+52Well, I DO like replying to a reply.
- jull1234, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4And after the initial shock, I think I might like they way it looks.
- Woah_G!, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I wonder how far in you can reply
- diabolicdiablo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Yes, that is an interesting idea.
- epohs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It seems very easy for posts to get lost with the new system.
- Woah_G!, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I wonder how far in you can reply
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8It's been mentioned before, but the greasemonkey script did reply replies much, much better.
- bluesuga, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2im with ya spudnic
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I'll give jull1234 $5 if they can work out where the first post in this digg's comment page to mention the greasemonkey script is.
This is a mess.- jull1234, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1For future reference, I'm open to any and all donations of $5.

- dlsspy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I wonder if it freaks out diggwatch.
- JoeBlunt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I love replying to a reply. It means I might actually make a friend or three on Digg.
but I HATE clicking VIEW REPLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( - dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2that one function isn't worth the hassle and confusion
- JoeBlunt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1OK, 1 day later, I realize replying to a reply is meaningless because it's near impossible now to go back and find my own comments to see if the thread has progressed. So much for better social networking.
- jull1234, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4And after the initial shock, I think I might like they way it looks.
- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -24/+7I love it, and it's the best/only way to fix Digg's broken comment system.... Plus Subnested tree's are a BIG plus!
Don't complain people, This is what Digg needs to stop comment abuse. If you want your comment seen, post it at the end, if you want to reply to someone, use the reply button.- SonicRush, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I totally agree. Everybody is just mad because they can't abuse the system any more and get their comment above somebody who posted an hour before them.
I think the new system is prefect, if a little slow.
- SonicRush, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I totally agree. Everybody is just mad because they can't abuse the system any more and get their comment above somebody who posted an hour before them.
- siszam, on 10/11/2007, -5/+130Hate it. I liked being able to see all the comments at once. Now I have to click and wait for them to load. Much less user friendly.
- Nocturnal, on 10/11/2007, -11/+3You can change it to view all comments up above at the very top of the page.
- lukee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8It's not a permanent setting though.
- jull1234, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5Now you get the choice to wait for them to load, instead of having to for each and every story.. or so goes the propaganda.
- Nocturnal, on 10/11/2007, -11/+3You can change it to view all comments up above at the very top of the page.

- Boho, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1No.
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -4/+161Congratulations, it's now virtually impossible to follow the flow of a conversation. Click 'expand full tree' and just try and figure out what's what. Good luck.
Seriously, the annoying @2798234 thing was better than this. Please do something to improve it...- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31Oh, and now you can't do Ctrl+F to find your own posts.
Yeah, this is just wonderful. Well I guess I won't waste my time commenting on topics like I used to lol...- aluminumpork, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Very goo
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31Oh, and now you can't do Ctrl+F to find your own posts.
