New Digg Comment System FTL. Old System FTW.
blog.digg.com — Loading one set of replies sometimes loads as slowly as loading the page with all comments expanded. Dear Digg: we are not going to be force fed this POS. Get over yourselves and realize that this new system is not working out.
- 6934 diggs
- digg it
- strictnein, on 11/12/2007, -118/+1984No kidding. This sucks.
- flernk, on 10/14/2007, -21/+677In an effort to eliminate hijacking, they have made hijacked comments infinitely more annoying.
Case in point, you had to click at least one time to read this. Sucker.- flernk, on 10/14/2007, -14/+308And you had to click at least twice to read this one.
I hate the new system.- flernk, on 10/11/2007, -5/+209Not to mention the fact that you have to wait each time one of these retarded comments loads. It annoys the crap out of me.
- venir, on 10/11/2007, -7/+108I think the worst part is not being able to reply to a comment that has already been replied to. I can't reply to strictnein's comment directly.
- mV0G7, on 10/11/2007, -5/+96Reading comments is usually the best part. This is like making me do 100 pushups before picking up a Playboy, you know?
- mastercheif, on 10/11/2007, -12/+23@venir
Yes you can. - Luigi239, on 10/11/2007, -3/+56Wait, there's a limit to the number of levels you can have?
Well that makes it even more worthless. - DesignEx, on 10/11/2007, -5/+69I don't think the Digg programmers completely thought this one through.
- Calcularius, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30I'm actually replying to strictnein... Yes, I agree with you strictnein, this blows ass.
- vhold, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22This is horrifying.
- ravedave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+47It took 35 seconds for me to get to this level. I'm no rocket surgeon but I am pretty sure the *Whole thread* would have loaded in 35 seconds with the old system.
- ravedave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Just found the "all" option. Took 20 seconds to load the whole damn page. I am also now getting the session expired, refresh the page error as well.
- KlayBorg, on 10/11/2007, -39/+3I know this won't be popular, but I like the system, the page loads much faster and its easier to keep track of posts.
- AbsoluteMSTR, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19TO MANY THREADS!
- grendel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21what d'bag thought this was a success?
fire the rest of the idiots that patted them on the back. - tyywebb, on 10/11/2007, -4/+73Will anyone ever see this?
- Hiki, on 10/11/2007, -6/+5Awww...This is the limit? If they were going to make the replies this ridiculous, they may as well just have made it an infinite branch.
- LOST2010, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17wow, i think i have reached the land of the UNKOWN...its really lonely down here
Are you human? 3bqtv...y did i do that?
CAN ANYONE HEAR ME!!!!!!!!
ECHO...ECHO....echo...echo - norbiu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+53This comment is hidden deeper than my porn.
- apachedisco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Still with the FETCHING. grumble grumble.
- iridescence, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12It would seem that this is the bottom of the hole...
- wtfbrok3n, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4This sucks.
- kahrn, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4http://digg.com/tech_news/Digg_comment_system_features_serious_flaws
- phronko, on 10/11/2007, -1/+30Where the hell am I?
- Alfdog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17This is the equivalent of whispering into an empty room... why am I even typing again?
- PURPLEDRINK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14koolaid man does not like.... OH NOOOOO!!
- darkzealot89, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This interface is just terrible. I mean sure they were the problems with the older comment system like hijacking and everyone and their mother replying to the first comment. But it worked! This is just clunky and does not feel right at all...
- Frezzle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6uggg its like windows explorer with a huge sub directory.
- teh_techie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4BAHHHHH
- aspdotnetjunkie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's dark in here
- jwolcott, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I just found me Lucky Charms!
- stklaw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4and each page only shows 100 comments on the first level
wanna read more?
it's loading time!
(in case anyone at all sees me here) - scotthealey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11somebody is touching me funny
- dbhaley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6+1 digg, FOR ALL OF ETERNITY!!!
- VanillaStarfish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3So this is what the center of the Earth is like.
Someone hold me. - SpectralSounds, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'm lost
- gmc74, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2this sucks, I had to click 4 times, waiting an average of 12 seconds between clicks to get to this comment.
Hey Digg, thanks for sending me back to the days of dial up! Very Retro... - thegator25, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This comment exists somewhere deep in the bowels of digg...
- haloddr, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1They should just have a forums for every single digg article!
- swOhio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I clicked the "View replies" button 4 times to reach this part of the thread and it took a total of 21 seconds to load. Not 21 seconds of looking around or taking my time, 21 seconds of that damn arrow spinning while the comments were retrieved. I have a 7mb line which I can stream high quality videos over, but I have to wait 21 seconds FOR ***** TEXT!?!?!
There's a reason I have "show all comments" set to my profile preferences. It's because I want to decide for myself whether or not a comment is good. Also, when it is a bad comment, I don't wish to read the dugg up reply's punchline before seeing the dumb comment, it really kills the joke. Comments add a lot of entertainment to digg. Hell, some things have even become diggisms I've come to appreciate. - sho222, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1why can't I reply to venir's comment? I guess it only goes 4 deep.
- haloevo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1you can't go any further than this?
- pizzatsf, on 10/11/2007, -5/+117Grr, so damn annoying. I had to click 3 times to find out this was pointless!
- CronoTrigger, on 10/11/2007, -26/+13check the viewing options, you can set it to expand the entire tree.
- stlcadet11, on 10/11/2007, -3/+36But it doesn't expand buried comments.... its still rather annoying
*Four clicks to get here... - insinuate, on 10/11/2007, -2/+42what a waste of my ***** time.
- Gizza, on 10/11/2007, -15/+8actuall, having the tree fully expanded as per that option makes this comment system infinitely better. Threading and inline commenting is great. Having to click through to get replies is not.
Also, it seems to say my seesion has expired everytime i try to comment. When i have them all expanded. I also cant seem to reply to all threads. This is kinda confusing. - darkyoshi, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1BAHAHAHAHA COMMENT HAX
- AnObserver, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7I changed my mind. This is kind of fun. We get to play hide the comment. I wonder how many layers this goes to. Will this translate into multi-layered commenting schemes?
- freebirdpat, on 10/11/2007, -4/+33This Web 2.0 crap is such BS.
Speed is the number 1 issue imho. - Gizza, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17When you have the comments fully expanded you cant seem to reply to any comment that already has replies. And in fact, any comment seems to get "Your session has expired, please refresh the page before commenting.".
- an0nym0us, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1lololoollololl
- diggboy101, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1LOL dis is just funny
- iRoy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+34LOL this is ***** hilarious!
It's like one of those choose your own adventure books! - VanillaStarfish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@iRoy
Not really, those adventure books are planned out with an intelligent thought process.
- Pause, on 10/11/2007, -1/+33They seem to get more retarded as they go on...
- epohs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5rutabaga
- ToadLeg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+45Fetching............................................................................
- Teemeeh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10no 4 time?
- AnObserver, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14All this would be lined up on the old system. The only benefit is that you get to reply to replies.
- kenvsryu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13let's go deep!
- Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3deeper then this?
- darkyoshi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9not possible
- RobbyDigital, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33Ouch! Too deep!
- iRoy, on 10/11/2007, -14/+3Gay.
- flernk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+44This totally discourages intelligent dialog. Sure flame wars are hidden, but nobody else wants to click this much just to read and add to a conversation.
- aywwts4, on 10/11/2007, -0/+35This is beyond absurd, I expanded all the posts on the thread, and there is no coherence, nobody is really talking to everybody.
Previously all diggers had the same experience on a thread, we saw what the general gist of what was going on, Now unless you are truly dedicated you wont see a fraction of the conversations, the humor or the "drama'
I post this rather confident nobody will ever see it. - spinchange, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I saw it. But then again, I'm was already in the rabbit hole and just decided to go all the way.
- ZWarren69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yes, I wondered down this absurd hole, myself. Help me get out. =P
- aywwts4, on 10/11/2007, -0/+35This is beyond absurd, I expanded all the posts on the thread, and there is no coherence, nobody is really talking to everybody.
- dmgctrl, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1You may as well stop now. Its not getting any better.
- ithasfourtoes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+41***** this new system.
- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21I'm not happy about this. It feels like we're in Retard Day Camp.
- corevette, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2They can't really revert to the old comment system...how are they going to save our comments?
- flernk, on 10/11/2007, -5/+209Not to mention the fact that you have to wait each time one of these retarded comments loads. It annoys the crap out of me.
- rejoined, on 10/14/2007, -12/+148Digg is in ur commentz, dumb-jackin' ur threadz!
- jfoun3, on 10/11/2007, -17/+4Dugg for appropriate LOLcat reference.
- crgnetworks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+40you have to load your comments for 2 minutes just to see me say this sucks haha
- DigDugDigger, on 10/11/2007, -5/+40@crgnetworks
I tried using the old 'click really fast' trick to give ur comment multiple diggs but it doesn't work anymore :( old comment system ftw- TenebrousX, on 10/11/2007, -5/+22that didn't work in the old system either
- crgnetworks, on 10/11/2007, -7/+40actually I just tried it and if you click REALLY fast, you get extra diggs!
- jerrygofixit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4im in ur comment, repliin 2 ur......reply....
- yoshitomi, on 10/14/2007, -17/+306Accidentally click more than once on the digg-up/digg-down buttons and it shoots you a pop-up message. WTF? I will not take being disturbed like this.
- RobbyDigital, on 10/11/2007, -3/+40Yeah what's the point of the pop-up box... its not like they even allow you to click a second time when the boxes are greyed out! So let's get rid of those pop-ups please.
- Shadic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I think I had to click four damned times to post this reply. Screw this crappy threaded system.
- rolli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This is so bad - unbelievable that they did not check this
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -8/+16on the plus side
naysayers to a majority opinion wont get dugg down if everyone sticks to the top comments- 450bigblock, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14On the down side, if everybody sticks to the top comments, they won't see the opinions of the naysayers.
- Diggtatorship, on 10/11/2007, -2/+36
The good news is, with all the wasted space I finally have a reason to use the rotation feature(portrait mode) of my LCD monitor and my MX revolution is getting a nice workout with it's fancy scroll wheel.
Seriously though... ***** the new comments system. Is it so hard to nest comments without overheating my CPU and making the whole damn thing unreadable? Maybe I can help:
1 Browse to reddit
2 Steal Code
3 Paste to Digg
4 ????
5 Profit!- mnemonix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10it rapes your processor, especially when opening the "tree"... i used to enjoy reading the comments; now it's just going to be so laborious that i can't be ***** -- both in terms of keeping one thing on topic and checking for replies... Why fix something that wasn't even fkn broke?!!
- renegadeafk, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Threadin lol
- mastercheif, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2That's what I think the new comment system is about, it takes much more time to read the comments, so inherently, the replies are a lot better also. They are trying to turn the comments section from a bunch of no good lurkers posting 2 line opinions into a place for intelligent discussion. From what I have seen so far, it seems to be working!
- poxonyou, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1If I want a Slashdot style comment system with deeper discussions on a site dominated by technology related news, I'll go to Slashdot. I liked Digg better because the discussions weren't so in-depth and they were quick to load and easy to reply to. You could view more news and comments quicker. I don't have the time to read through 200 long winded replies, especially when you have to keep clicking and waiting to see them. Not to mention, you don't get to directly click on a nested topic, you have to keep clicking "View x Replies."
- grendel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19what d'bag thought this was a success?
fire the rest of the idiots that patted them on the back. - SpikeX, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Add /all to the end of any Digg URL to expand comments by default.
- mikesbaker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22fix this Kevin you broke digg
- optikalblitz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9this cannot be happening.
'fetching' comments? i know dogs w/no hind legs that can fetch faster than this - Shadez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I just hope this doesn't become another hex code style thing where everyone starts burying every story not related to the new comment system and only ones about the new comment system stay on the front page _>
- flernk, on 10/14/2007, -14/+308And you had to click at least twice to read this one.
- defectDS, on 10/11/2007, -9/+65Every time I reload the page, I get this now:
http://www.timshundo.com/dpud/uploads/Picture%202.png
And sometimes burried comments open and close on their own when clicked. And you can't reply to a nested comment when in expanded tree mode? And refreshing the page takes away your ability to edit your comment, even if it said you had 100+ seconds!? This is just way to screwed up.- skinrock, on 10/11/2007, -17/+10"And you can't reply to a nested comment when in expanded tree mode?"
I'm replying to your comment in expanded tree mode....I can see reply links for everyone, including the first thread up there, with about 5 nested comments.
Overall, I think it's a step in the right direction, it just needs tweaking. You never like when changes are made to a system you're used to, but eventually it grows on you, and you wonder how you ever put up with the old system.- kenvsryu, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2hi.
- dimension89, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1I think that ever person should have a reply link. go look at the imdb boards, i think that that's a good system
Also, too much whitespace. - OdepiTy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1cppp;
- tyywebb, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Here's to finest crew in Starfleet.
- dimension89, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1I think that ever person should have a reply link. go look at the imdb boards, i think that that's a good system
- neuonyx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6@defectDS The reason you are getting that graphic is because you are using Safari 3beta... Its a new feature of safari and has nothing to do with digg....
- insomn3ak, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2hey whats up
- insomn3ak, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3Agreed, people need to give this a chance! The community has been whining for a new commenting system forever, and now that they have it....their gonna keep whining!
- tyywebb, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Is this the farthest in they'll let us comment? Bah! Old system FTW.
- despisedIcon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5no
- kenvsryu, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2hi.
- Alethinos, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Download Camino if you want that to stop :-P
Webkit has lots of bugs because its not very universal, but using camino gives you a mozilla based browser without comprimising what you love about safari (ar atleast what I loved about it)- helimeef, on 04/10/2008, -0/+0Webkit has a lot of bugs? Dude what are you on crack? Webkit is the most stable, fastest, and standards-compliant browser so far. It scored 100/100 on Acid3, and you're saying that it's buggy?
The build of WebKit that I'm using doesn't do that.
- helimeef, on 04/10/2008, -0/+0Webkit has a lot of bugs? Dude what are you on crack? Webkit is the most stable, fastest, and standards-compliant browser so far. It scored 100/100 on Acid3, and you're saying that it's buggy?
- octus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's actually a really annoying 'feature' of the Safari 3 Beta. Thanks Google/Mirablis, for making everyone think Beta software means its ready.
- skinrock, on 10/11/2007, -17/+10"And you can't reply to a nested comment when in expanded tree mode?"
- Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -5/+68Yeah, and the fact that there's no way to go change your options to go back to the old school system makes it suck even more. My computer (and internet) is perfectly capable of loading massive number of comments all at once.
- Noobuntu, on 10/11/2007, -11/+6Comment Display Options is at the top right of the first post.
- Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Well...there you go
- Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Nevermind, I have to do that everytime I go into the comments section of an article.
Screw this! - helimeef, on 04/10/2008, -0/+0Click on "Global Settings", there is a drop-down menu that allows you to change settings for every thread. What I wish Digg would do personally is keep the comments rolled up, but loaded. That way when there's 5 comments you're not stuck waiting 5 minutes :)
- Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Nevermind, I have to do that everytime I go into the comments section of an article.
- Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Well...there you go
- jamelt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I don't think that that's the point, I think the point is, People avoid writing comments because they will appear at the bottom, and people just hit reply to be listed higher, even though its not even a reply to the original message.
- BrokenWind, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'm not sure that an option to use the old would be at all compatible with the new system. They need something in between the two.
- Noobuntu, on 10/11/2007, -11/+6Comment Display Options is at the top right of the first post.
- blaze03, on 10/14/2007, -20/+207They've also eliminated any desire to read and post in the comments, which I suppose also indirectly curbs hijacking.
Whoever designed this piece of ***** needs to be fired.- cyphin6, on 10/11/2007, -24/+12Wow you don't take lightly to people trying to improve something maybe wrong, maybe it isn't the greatest but saying that makes you seem kinda childish, make a better statement not one that says hey im ***** and I don't know how to say it better than being dumb.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1another plus side is that
giant unneeded caps posts wont exist as much
with Lmao 600 times having to scroll through it
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1another plus side is that
- FluffyArmada, on 10/11/2007, -11/+9That was really harsh. He (or maybe she) tried to do something different, and while I'm not overly fond of it either, at least he tried to make an improvement. I like the new nesting, I think it's great. What I would do is make it all display at once like it used to. The nesting = good. The new display model = (imho) not so good.
I'm all for criticism, but you're just being mean. What website interfaces have *you* written recently?!- chrisxkelley, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3agreed. i'm all for this new system, but it would be really nice if you didn't have to click to expand the comments. I would very much like for them to just show up expanded... sure there may be more to download, but for those of us with fat pipes, we can handle it.
- Intrepion, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3even when you expand the comment tree... it still makes you click to view 51-101! and then those aren't automatically expanded!
But besides those little things.. I like this new system.
- Intrepion, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3even when you expand the comment tree... it still makes you click to view 51-101! and then those aren't automatically expanded!

- ricerfuel, on 10/11/2007, -11/+1heer heer!
- WaltDismal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I buried a comment, then needed to go back and read it again and the comments under it.
Couldn't find ANY way to unbury or read it. Lost access to the comments below it. This sucks majorly. Guys, please redesign the usability.- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah I noticed that... BUT if you click the show comments, then click the nested "View Replies" link you can bring them up... Mind you, you have to be fast as the buried comment expands then collapse pretty fast...
Who needs Flash Games when you have the new Digg comments system! :P - Jargonaut06, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i cant do it :(
- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah I noticed that... BUT if you click the show comments, then click the nested "View Replies" link you can bring them up... Mind you, you have to be fast as the buried comment expands then collapse pretty fast...
- Penzance, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree. it is not good.
- SwiftJ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Hopefully it was Rose.
- cyphin6, on 10/11/2007, -24/+12Wow you don't take lightly to people trying to improve something maybe wrong, maybe it isn't the greatest but saying that makes you seem kinda childish, make a better statement not one that says hey im ***** and I don't know how to say it better than being dumb.
- chalkboy, on 10/11/2007, -37/+14It is actually growing on me I would like it to be a little bit faster though
- loconet, on 10/14/2007, -11/+151Dear Digg,
Don't be ashame to imitate slashdot's threading. We won't tell.- Ayavaron, on 10/11/2007, -7/+38Personally, I love Slashdot's threading. I would love it if the system was adopted on Digg as well.
- killerofkiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35(+4, Insightful)
- d4rthsid, on 10/11/2007, -15/+4I hate slashdot's threading, too many clicks to see what people are saying. I like the old digg comments because you could see them all, but this is definitely faster, and inline commenting is awesome!
- interiot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Sure, Slashdot has the "needs a billion clicks to read all the comments" mode, but fortunately you can turn that off in Slashdot: 1) uncheck the "I am willing to help test Slashdot's New Discussion System", 2) pick "Nested" from the dropdown, not "threaded" or "flat" or any other silliness, 3) check "save", and 4) click the "change" button.
Maybe that's not totally intuitive, but at least Slashdot's system can be configured to not suck if you know the right settings, and it remembers your configuration settings, so you don't have to redo it for every single story.- d4rthsid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks, this actually makes me want to read comments on Slashdot now. The best part of the stories are usually the comments, they are usually funnier than the actual story.
- melve, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24The main problem I have with this system is that buried comments bury the entire conversation also. Just because a comment is buried doesn't mean that there aren't worthy comments in reply to it. That, and I'm not too keen on the whole collapsed conversation idea. Slashdot has done it right. This system just winds up essentially burying all comments below the first level.
If digg wants to use ajax to cut down on the initial page load, then use ajax to load buried comments, as they're less likely to be read anyway.

... ***** THIS!- Noobuntu, on 10/11/2007, -11/+3Comment Display Options is at the top right of the first post.
- FyreFiend, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The fact I have to hit that for each story is my main complaint about the new system. There should be an option somewhere that can be set to always expand the comments. That way people that want it can have the whole thing expanded by default while those that like the new system can leave it as is.
- VanillaStarfish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0FyreFiend, you're my new friend.

- thetwe, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Hahah this is my first ever comment, I'm usually a passive digg user too, but this new comment system is awful.
- 1ncontrol, on 10/11/2007, -13/+2Why can't Digg have normal threaded comments like http://www.avanoo.com ?
As in, none of this "Please wait" crap. It's trivial to make all comments appear expanded instantly, like on reddit. - devinjohnson2, on 10/14/2007, -12/+85We need another digg revolt!

- ace87, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Haha yes! I love digg revolts
- keyboardduder, on 10/11/2007, -32/+37Woah submitter, give the developers a break. Theyre just trying to make it better. I like the old system but give the people a break.
- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28Consider this as "constructive criticism"...
- insomn3ak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Hmm...FYI keyboardduder, I just dugg you up but the new system dugg you down instead. Then I dugg up dvsbastards reply to you and found out that he got your digg.
- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Maybe this new system isn't so bad after all! :)
- stevecole, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's not the developers' fault. They build what the specs say to build and are usually railroaded by design. So it's the designers's fault. And the testers. And the managers. All parties who signed off on this debacle are at fault. How did this ever pass QA???
I'm not trying to equate digg to a major corporation -- hell, for all I know, a single person fulfilled all of the roles I mentioned above for this project. But for digg's product, standard R&D practices certainly still apply as evidenced here, where a major deployment has failed.
- blaze03, on 10/11/2007, -4/+38If anything, this ENCOURAGES comment abuse / hijacking in the first post because everything else buried under 3-5 layers of clicks. Who the hell is NOT going to reply to the first post when the only other option is getting never read because your post is gonna be on page five?
- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9And seeing as it is now multi tiered (threaded) abusers will simply reply to the first reply to ensure that their comment is right at the top of a fully expanded list.
What I wish is that a third button would appear in replies to the first few comments allowing digg users to mark a post as comment abuse... this way they could be easily avoided by users (because face it, a lot of people will still read buried comments just to see what the fuss is about... myself included!) - thedez, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1at least i won't have to wade though the replies to get to the next comment. people seem to not understand the difference of adding a new comment and replying to a comment.
- jeriqo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1You just ***** don't get it.
- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9And seeing as it is now multi tiered (threaded) abusers will simply reply to the first reply to ensure that their comment is right at the top of a fully expanded list.
- Muyoso, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23Lets see. They need to do this to make this work. First of all, the reply button for a comment should be that, a button, not a bar extending across the screen so when you click pretty much anywhere on the screen ***** flies everywhere and a reply box comes up. There should be no lines everywhere in a "discussion" as they call it. There should be HALF the room inbetween comments there is now. Also, all of the comments should be expanded by default when the page loads. Oh, and there should NOT be a button at the bottom of the page asking if you want to see more comments, that is completely retarded.
You want to see a good commenting system??? SLASHDOT.ORG- interiot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5(+5 insightful) You nailed the important issues. Maybe it sounds nitpicking to complain about the amount of whitespace in between comments, but it really bugs me too.
The way I skip offtopic threads is to spin my mousewheel. It's possible that clicking expand/collapse all the time might eventually be useful, but 1) I've never used a system like this that I liked.... (eg. see Lotus Notes... http://technology.guardian.co.uk/weekly/story/0,,1705106,00.html), and 2) even if requiring me to click in 100 precise locations just to passively read a discussion somehow worked, adding in a huge amount of AJAX-related delay to every click makes it totally unusable. If you're going to keep the AJAX expand/collapse, you need to add a ton of caching so it feels as fast as local to the end user.- interiot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Aha, the extra whitespace is apparently just a CSS bug, not an intentional feature. Hopefully they can fix this soon. http://paperlined.org/tmp/Digg_buggy_whitespace.png (that was rendered with Firefox, for what it's worth)
- epohs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I agree with most of your comments Muyoso.
Also, I think an expanded view by default and the ability to dig entire sub-threads could be good. That way if a flamefest breaks out that entire line of conversation can be hidden once it passes a certain threshold, and ALL other conversations will be visible and more readable thanks to your suggestions.
However, I do think splitting excessively long discussions into pages is a good idea.
- epohs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I agree with most of your comments Muyoso.

- Lynx34, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2We need another uprising a la the AACS processing key stories. Just get a crapload of submissions of people saying the new comment system sucks and how it should be changed and get them all to the front page. If it worked once, it'll work again.

- WestDC, on 10/11/2007, -19/+2No. Just... no. You fellas need to stop acting like having access to Digg is a right. You're not being "force fed" anything - you're lucky to have Digg at all, so shut the ***** up.

no, using digg is a choice... and I could very well choose a different news site without a broken comments function. if these messages are any indication most users think this change is a complete disaster - giving your users what YOU think is good for them instead of what they want is a sure fire way to make them go away.

no one here to talk to ...
soo lonely.. - DrJ00, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I rarely if ever read the comments on stories largely because the original format was too cumbersome to deal with the 2 level limit. Now it's even worse.
Seriously guys, there's no need to implement each level of each thread as an AJAX retrieval. Just insert the whole tree into the DOM at the start, then put in simple java script to hide/expand each level. Then give us the ability to configure how we wish to view the tree by default(full expand, full collapse, 2 levels, etc).
This is pretty pathetic.- mikesbaker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6and expand all should allow you to respond to original posts. this just basically gutted the way I like to use this web site.
- mikesbaker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8seriously DIGG is going to lose some major traffic with this crap. Kevin I just spammed a few stories with my gripes but I am pretty sure that they all are here now. FIX DIGG!!!!!
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5if they wanted to save on bandwith - they are going to succeed......
- KingEmperor24, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7WTF?!? Good Idea, horrific implementation. And I thought AOL used to be bad...
- mikesbaker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6ok so here is my major gripe. we give enough of a ***** about digg to start a revolt over nothing (the number) but when this ***** happens the story as of right now only has about 2300 diggs. Get some priorities diggers and lets kill this abomination.

There are two others *somewhere* in all this mess, but actually I don't think they are because in experimenting with them I wrote one, then proceeded to write in the box that had appeared below that, saved it... and now I can't find either one of them. =(
- poxonyou, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2To have all comments expanded, click "Comment Display Options" right above the very first comment on the right side. Then click Expand Tree.
I think this should be default, or at least the option to expand the tree should be more obvious and easier to click.
To reply to the original topic once others have commented, you have to "Collapse Tree" under "Comment Display Options," then click "View x Replies" under the user you wish to reply to. After the last reply to the original comment is a field to reply to that person's comment. That's how I replied to strictnein directly. The option to reply to the original poster does not seem to be present when you "Expand Tree" under "Comment Display Options," but it should be.- BrokenWind, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4if it needs instructions, it has failed.

Change is GOOD- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Really? This system takes infinitely more time to get past comment abuse than just scrolling scrolling does -- after all, how do i know it's abuse until I click 100 times to see it?
- laterallateral, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Another problem I see with this new interface is that I had to look at feoza's profile to ban him. this is no good.

- stevecole, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2...and then your session expires.
- Subcranium, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When something like this happened at Fark.com, many of the heaviest posters left to join bannination.com. That probably won't happen at Digg, but man, this is 5 times worse than the Fark redesign. It's almost unbearable to open the threads.
- Hubris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If this isn't improved....I'll certainly be visiting Digg a LOT less than I was.
- tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Took about a minute to expand all the comments here... its almost like a highschool programming project type of thing.

- gungaroo22, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2The only benefit is that you can reply to replies. I agree to an extent; they got SOMETHING right.
- Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9THIS DOESN'T GET RID OF COMMENT ABUSE, BITCHES!
Now you've just waited longer to see the abuse.
- mastercheif, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5I like it!
- rejoined, on 10/11/2007, -6/+37Now comments go on for 2 or 3 pages...who would read comments like that!
Like for example, on some stories with 100 or more comments, it says on the bottom:
'Show 51-101 of 109 discussions'.- The2ndRunner, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Yep, if someone were to actually read all the comments, they would have to think about if they would rather have 50 seperate load times, clicking on all the replies, or one big load time--I would rather just have one big load time if this new system is any indication of where things are going. This just encourages not reading any of the replies at all.
- actionscripted, on 10/11/2007, -7/+15I really like this idea, but for *****'s sake: speed this beast up. Make this lil' Ajax monster move faster.
- Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4load the whole ***** page and just collapse it. Have the "Expand button" ready to click for those who want it. This is fetching bollocks is just frustrating!
- masgrada, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26What the crap, I leave for 3 hours and this happens??
- grumpyrain, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Spot on!
One of the best things about digg was the ability to engage in discussion. You could simply load http://www.digg.com/users/[You]/news/commented and check out the responses to your comments. Using the in-line find in Firefox, it was very simple to locate your previous posts and read responses made by others. This nested commenting has potential because it stops the comment abuse below the first post, but there has got to be some way to locate your previous posts or it is useless.- davidlitts, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3exactly, a 5min. load time sucks, but 200 30 sec. load times sucks way more
- Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4This is ***** aweful. I will never find this comment again!
- sherwinn, on 10/11/2007, -6/+21Holy crap, this is horrific. I hate Digg now.
- WallyAnti, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2Well I for one like it. It actually loads within seconds on my system as opposed to the old system which would crank away for 5 minutes sometimes. They need a better way to find your comments but this is a step in the right direction. I prefer slashdot's method though. Sometimes the old tricks are the best tricks.
- Godlike, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Digg just pulled a FARK.
- bjornski, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Yeah, and I quit going there too.
- hansblix, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7The new comment system gave me AIDS

- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13The best part of digg was skimming through all the funny quick witted comments.
This is a load of *****. Also it's realllly slllllllow. You've taken the best part of your site away. - sewalsh, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I find it highly ironic that Kevin Rose/Daniel Burka bestow some sort of uber usability godliness about themselves when they can't even get a bloody comment system to work properly. who looks retarded now?
- radicaldementia, on 10/11/2007, -8/+82I totally agree. Digg team, maybe you should let us play around in some kind of preview sandbox section and get some feedback before applying changes like this to the whole site. Cause this took everyone by surprise and nobody likes it.
- Burritoking924, on 10/14/2007, -24/+662Or give us an option to toggle in on or off in the options page. Maybe all expanded by default, or view all initial comments.

- itsme92, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6whoever is reading this, look below this comment. You should see 3 text boxes before the next comment tree. WTF?
- s3rgi0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6wow, that's nuts
- blarz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2haha ... this is ridiculous :)
- lysernix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@itsme92
Its me ... reading your comment. I see the three boxes... what the hell. I wanted to respond to you, but now I just feel like I am in some strange place.
Strange Cosmos.
- lysernix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is just a test because the comment that I just submitted is now hanging perilously above this one; it was a nested reply above this nest but *this* box still appeared, even though I never requested to reply to "Burrutoking924" - so now this becomes an experiment in which the text box above me and the text box below me are explored.
Cause really, what a clusterfux.
- Burritoking924, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10An me and you are making this situation better how?
- rejoined, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29One glitch I have noticed is, that if you click 'Comment Display Options' and cick on 'Expand full tree', then you cannot reply to comments which already have been replied.

- TheCount, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Not even a toggle to expand it all by default, they need an option to go completely back to the old system. I don't want threading, I don't want to have to click over and over to follow a conversation, I don't want ANYTHING about this new system. It's just horrible.
- jiggidy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Its a good system. just takes forever to load.
- Daniel001, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1No, it's a crap system that takes forever to load.
- zoombusa, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2A No on the toggle system. Then you would have to freaking log in all the time.

- Luigi239, on 10/11/2007, -41/+416I personally prefer threaded comments. The concept is good; implementation is just mediocre. Commenting is one thing Reddit does much better.
- davidlitts, on 10/11/2007, -0/+36I think my main problem is the new reply tree, which looks cluttered and is very hard to scan through.
- SamuelDr2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Too bad your comment might not be read because of the way the tree is hidden by default
- Pause, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10and my comment right here probably will never be seen...
- judbeasley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3WTF!! I want to reply to Luigi239's comment, NOT THIS ONE. Agreed, Reddit's commenting system powns diggs. Always have, always will. FAST load times.. nice and plain and easy to read. THIS IS JUST CONFUSING!!! HATE IT!

- SamuelDr2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Too bad your comment might not be read because of the way the tree is hidden by default
- interiot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12The reply tree works just fine for Slashdot, for example. This one is way too verbose though... somehow I have 7 different reply text-entry boxes opened up, even though I never clicked "reply", I've only clicked to expand a couple of sub-comments.
Other parts of the commenting system are too verbose as well. Sure, it's good to keep new users in mind, but somehow the current layout seems like it sometimes takes up way more screen space per message than any other commenting system I've used. The "Hide X replies to this comment" bar really needs to somehow be combined with the "by davidlitts 39 minutes ago" bar somehow. - Devilboy666, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Yea I hate that the 'Hide 2 replies' bar is DARKER (and thus visually more prominent) than the actual post heading. Who designed this *****?
I love the threading idea, but FFS expand all the threads by default and just hide the text for the buried comments. - SweetMercury, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The threaded comment system makes sense though, considering the amount of back and forth the comment areas get now.
Let's face it, the "comments" section stopped being about comments on the articles when Digg 2.0 went live, probably before that. It's a "discussion" area, and should have been structured that way a long time ago.
Implementation isn't the best, yet, but that's incidental. - rhabd0mancer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Digg's new comment system is the best thing that ever happened to reddit.
- elnerdo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I would be happy if Digg just took Slashdot's comment system (moderation and all) and copied it directly.
- stargatesteve, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm not so sure. I think the slashdot community is a lot more mature than the digg comunity. At least on slashdot, the lolcats rarely post. and when they do, (-1, troll)/(-1, flamebait). :D
- CthulhuDawn, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2On a positive note, I like the animation for digging up or down comments a lot.
- davidlitts, on 10/11/2007, -0/+36I think my main problem is the new reply tree, which looks cluttered and is very hard to scan through.
- tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -29/+153@everyone
You're right. The old comment system was better. IMO, the best way to show Digg what we mena (but it'll never happen) would be to never go beyond second level comments and just keep using the @Digger convention. That or someone can create a greasemonkey script that either a) makes all comments only 2 levels(good luck) or b) makes nice threading.- Luigi239, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21@ Digger is not user friendly, because you have to read the comment, go look for the comment being refered to, and then look back down to the comment you started. Threading is really nice, the interface as of now is just cluttered and ugly. That, and not everybody uses firefox and greasemonkey.
- Pause, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I use Opera and I have UserJs, and a lot of greasemonkey scripts, but not all, work with UserJs.
- logic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Perhaps Digg could interpret the @user syntax like Twitter and group them somehow. *shrug*
- killerofkiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I was just gonna say that.. right now i see 3 reply boxes.. way too confusing and bulky. if i want to reply to you i would like to click "reply to user" then have it appear
- Pause, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I use Opera and I have UserJs, and a lot of greasemonkey scripts, but not all, work with UserJs.
- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I still think even if they went back to 2 levels, that they should hide nested comments by default. That would be the ultimate method, and still work to prevent comment abuse. Either that, or abolish nested levels all together... Primitive but it would stop comment abuse.
Other than that I like how it's setup right now. Just needs some trouble shooting and bug fixing... making it a little more usable... Diggers that have a problem with it just need to get used to it. - cryptoki, on 02/01/2008, -2/+1@ thanks for the idea.. foget replying to posts directly the @ symbol is where its at for me... but now were going to have to resort to posting the comment were responding to by: (when the comment was far away)
@ username: you said: "blah blah blah"
then your reply..... that will be the norm, just wait and see.... - zoombusa, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2What they need is a link on top to expand all comments!
- pgm_01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2There is one, at the top right (but you need to set your digg threshold to see negative diggs)
- Waskonator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7It doesn't show any markings on the comments you've made. Especially if they have been buried, or it was a reply. I, for one, have had many comments buried, all the way to china, and i would like to be able to see how much the world hates me quickly. With the new system I almost have to go through every single thread to find my post. This is BS. Submission DUGG. FIX IT.
- mustacheo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Well if you wanna see all your bad ass comments, just click expand all and search for your username. You can find them easily.
- Luigi239, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21@ Digger is not user friendly, because you have to read the comment, go look for the comment being refered to, and then look back down to the comment you started. Threading is really nice, the interface as of now is just cluttered and ugly. That, and not everybody uses firefox and greasemonkey.
- tardpicard, on 10/14/2007, -112/+65not efficient? sucks? what the hell? this is awesome, curbs the flame wars, and replying to the first comment to be seen. It basically promotes intelligent conversations directed at the content, and it helps to not be so easily bombarded with the gayness of a lot of digg's users. +1 Kevin for sure. Also, replying to replies is excellent, but how deep does the comment tree go? Arbitrary depth would be nice.
- rejoined, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Meybe they should number the comments..like the first parent comment is '1'..threaded/nested of 1st parent comment '1a'..then nested after that '1a1'..or whatever.
Or maybe some other system...idk.
In this current state it gets too confusing after a while. - NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11@tardpicard sorry you get dugg down... I agree with you, and I think this is a great system... too many diggers are ignorant and fear change... this change scares them... -_-
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3
"It basically promotes intelligent conversations directed at the content, and it helps to not be so easily bombarded with the gayness of a lot of digg's users"
so now digg is trying to control how it's users behave? i thought digg was all about democracy, guess not. I guess I must be "gay" because I think this system is horrible on multiple levels - it's as if they didn't even try to use it before putting it out
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3
- myFriendDerrik, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I agree this discourages comment hijacking and promotes actual replies to what the thread is talking about. I'm with you guys. People who complain about having to click too many times on a webapp are the epitome of lazy.
- ajgv, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3i liked the flame wars; interesting to read. as for comment hijacking, i sorta just got used to it,
- WolfProtagonist, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Digg has gone to hell.
- alefox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2we're in the 21st century, remember digg v.3 when it came out, people hated it (including myself) besides, now we don't have to go @wolfprotagonist, we can just hit the button
- ArielMT, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1@tardpicard
Make up your mind. You spend the entire comment blasting the old one-reply system, then you finish by writing, "Arbitrary depth would be nice"? Nice flip-flop there.
This new comment system has serious problems, and honestly until they're worked out, even *chan-like flatness would be better.
- rejoined, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Meybe they should number the comments..like the first parent comment is '1'..threaded/nested of 1st parent comment '1a'..then nested after that '1a1'..or whatever.
- Dayyve, on 10/11/2007, -40/+24It _is_ a step in the right direction but definitely needs to be revised. Instead of getting that weird framework when you click the 'view reply' button why not just give the option to burst all the replies and instead of one super long comment list break it into pages you can click between like other comment boards? I'd much rather do one click at the bottom of the page than eight clicks to see the comments.
- cryptoki, on 02/01/2008, -1/+1that will never happen... and if it does it will be a miracle. digg is becoming too popular... I wouldnt doubt if the new regulations where implemented by a government it consultant.
- qualish, on 10/14/2007, -65/+332I like it purely for the fact it keeps all those asshole comment abusers from "replying" to the first post with completely non-related information.
- blaze03, on 10/11/2007, -9/+49How exactly does it "keep" them from doing that? They can still do that.
In fact, now there's an even BIGGER incentive to do that, considering they have comment paging now. Nobody's gonna expand five pages of comments to read your little insightful post on page 5.- leetdood, on 10/11/2007, -8/+23Pointless comment that you had to click to read. Don't you feel like a tool now?
- Alfdog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6yes, yes I do
- atlacatl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You shouldn't. I doubt anyone will click this far to read a useless comment.
- leetdood, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1At least 16 people did.
- michaelsynclare, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2This one is even more useless. You want ur click back dont you?
- muikano, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It depends on how you comment. I usually comment on threads with smart comments. If you ONLY reply to smart threads, the pertinent threads will have all the pertinent comments. Even if you have this wonderful insight but you placed it under "I have first digg", isn't that your fault for putting it there?
It's like filing cabinets. Don't file under B-type comments and expect A-type ppl to read it. Not saying that ppl wanting peritinent comments are A-type ppl--just saying that comments will generally be more sorted now. change your commenting behavior.
- leetdood, on 10/11/2007, -8/+23Pointless comment that you had to click to read. Don't you feel like a tool now?
- ShugNinx21, on 10/11/2007, -5/+33I personally don't think that sacrificing useability to curb a few assholes is worth it.

- logic, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Oi, my spoon is toooooo big!
- metamorfoza, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16This is even worse then comment abusing, this will prevent people to participate in meaningfully discussions and quite often replies had more insightful/funnier/meaningful comment then the parent.
its stupid to waste that just beacuse of few attention whores.- thedez, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1wrong. this actually makes the conversation more meaning. by replying to this thread you know where in the conversation i am entering. and if you and i are the only ones that can see this comment: c'est la vie.
- ShugNinx21, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Except I had to click and load twice just to read your reply. You will have to click n load 3 times to read this reply. It's just too much trouble even for a meaningful conversation let alone regular internet chatter.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1socrates could be a digger, but no one will ever see his comments with this ***** system
- ShugNinx21, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Except I had to click and load twice just to read your reply. You will have to click n load 3 times to read this reply. It's just too much trouble even for a meaningful conversation let alone regular internet chatter.

- fantasyflamz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Then they'll just reply by writing a new post right afterwards, which is why I think that it's not going to be effective.
- psychobabelfish, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Well, the point of replying to the first comment was that even after it had hit the front page, and gathered a lot more comments, you could still get ur spam near the top. So this might be able to help. But the thing is, im ALWAYS going to want to read all the replies, or at least have them loaded in one click, so this still just breaks digg comments
- WallyAnti, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6He's right. The previous system was crap and filled up with boring useless knee-jerk responses and off-topic bs. All you had to do on the old system was reply to the first post. Half the time these useless posts would remain unburied. Now there is no real incentive to post to a parent unless your post is relevant bc it won't even be seen unless someone is interested in a specific topic of conversation. This way is faster and easier to navigate, it's just harder to find your own posts. They need to fix that.
- grbruner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Except the first thing I do is expand the thread and wait forever just to read comment abuse / lame replies where as before it was pretty easy to skip over.
- ErikThompson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1How about don't expand the first thread? Look for an initial post that says something interesting.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I agree, except that it's ... so ... fracking ... slllloooooowwwwww. If they precached the comments or something so that they opened more or less instantly I'd like it.
Oh, the comment paging is lame, too... kinda does defeat the purpose, as pointed out by Blaze. - nocre, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I like it. I really fail to see how it impacts usability in a bad way. At least in my opinion, it makes things more manageable. It allows me to easily find comments that may prove interesting or useful. Chances are if it's neither, I probably don't want to read any replies to it. So, in short, it saves one from having to trudge through the seemingly endless plethora of ***** that befalls any story.
But sure, make it optional. Options are almost unilaterally a good thing. No reason to force this new comment system on anyone if you don't have to. - republicker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0YOU CANT READ THE GOD DAMN COMMENTS ANYMORE. OR FIND PREVIOUS POSTS EASILY
- blaze03, on 10/11/2007, -9/+49How exactly does it "keep" them from doing that? They can still do that.

- jhnshft, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1one of the big things for me that makes this system not cool is that before, even if a thread was "high jacked", the community could democratically decide to show or hide asinine comments. the new features make it more difficult for the diggers to police themselves since it takes a click and 30 seconds to see replies anyways. why bother. which on another note is kinda ridiculous, because I don't really believe anyone will put forth the effort to read this anyway, it will take way to many clicks and too much time. damn, i just wasted 2 minutes of my life I can't have back. :(
- ThirdPrize, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Yes, but in a Web 2.0 sort of way.
- mongrel, on 10/11/2007, -26/+9Agreed, but the submitter doesn't have to be an a-hole about it, hehheh. I will say for what it is, it's done about as attractively as one could expect, so kudos. BUT... just isn't pleasant to use. Sorry.
- geminigeek, on 10/11/2007, -14/+147Don't you just love all the clickings?
- JimDinger, on 10/11/2007, -6/+18NO!
- madformadness, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1YES!
- thedez, on 10/11/2007, -11/+8Actually I kinda do. It reminds me of the OSX effects.
expand....shrink....expand....shrink.....
I can do this all day. - gharding, on 10/11/2007, -0/+38I like the waiting after the click the most.
- jonesy827, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1who uses IE anyway?
- zweben, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I clicked a hole through my mouse.
- bri3fcas3, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8There is a "comment display option". Click on it and expand full tree. It'll save all your clicking.
But I still like this new comment system as I don't read every comment.- myFriendDerrik, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I don't read every comment either, but the way people are reacting apparently everyone else does. I like the new system, it's cleaner.
- heinousjay, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I'm with you. Most of the comments on Digg aren't really worthy of attention anyway, and this keeps them organized in a simpler fashion. Frankly, there are only two improvements I would want - collapse the reply boxes everywhere by default instead of leaving them lying around everywhere, and speed up the comment retrieval system on the backend so it doesn't take so long to load after a click. Organizationally I like it, and I prefer using this as well.
- fffizzz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1reminds me of playing diablo
- Leviathan88, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I eat babies. So what? Most of the people won't read this. Click me, bury me and report me.
- JimDinger, on 10/11/2007, -6/+18NO!
- judsond, on 10/11/2007, -36/+19The fact that not all comments load right away is a big improvement. Overall I like it a lot.
- SleepJunkie, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6What the hell is wrong with you!
- pogfreak, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2( ) )=====D~~~~~~~~
ARENT YOU GLAD YOU LOADED MY REPLY? - insomn3ak, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Yeah, the comment loading SEEMS faster, but not when you take into account the fact that you have to wait for all the replys to load AND you have to slog through them if you want to find any responses to your post. I'll love the new system if they include a way to expand all the threads at once. Wait a minute...I see "comment display options" at the top. I may have spoke too soon...to be continued...
- insomn3ak, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3OK, so people just need to adjust the comment options at the top and the majority of these complaints will go away. The loading issue may still be a problem for some with machines from the 90's though.
- neoporcupine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7... my initial reaction is that this is freaking cool! The thread pirates are foiled and the commenting system will actually be used properly. The old system was totally abused. This is a much better system (from my limited use so far - like everyone else here).
I can't believe that everyone wants all the comments loaded at once - you actually read ALL of the comments? Maybe some people do, like the poster of the original article. Everyone else ... maybe just want to engage in a conversations online. Not even sure how easy that is to do yet.
Still - well done Digg!- w3bsmith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2While I agree that this is much better, threading always makes for more intelligent and orderly conversations, my wife sitting right next to me doesn't like it. Why? Because she does read all the comments. In fact that's the main reason she comes to digg. Personally I like only expanding the comments I think are interesting, rather than having to scroll past rows and rows of banal nonsense.
- huiezer, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1sup
- drafhk, on 10/11/2007, -10/+40This might be the one thread where a simple reply of "amen" is not worth digging down to oblivion.
I liked having the reply tree visible by default. I'm not even sure if it's possible with the new system. With it taking 500+ years to load, I'm not likely to find out for myself.- SlalomMan, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17Amen.
- drafhk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Hmm. I'm wondering if i was misunderstood and as such dugg down.
What I was referring to was this entire digg story, not my opinion that followed. That was thrown in on an edit.
- kefler, on 10/14/2007, -20/+324the #1 stupid thing is if the 1st comment is buried, then it shows up grey/collapsed even if the reply to it is +5000 diggs.
- WallyAnti, on 10/11/2007, -13/+2It isn't stupid. If the parent was buried then it was probably a crap post anyway so the reply shouldn't be significant unless you are interested enough to open it up. You do raise a good point though. Howsabout if they just replace the buried post with the most popular reply? That sounds good to me.
- myFriendDerrik, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9Being grey / collapsed didn't stop it from getting +5000, so I don't see your point.
- EvolvedAnt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The point is that made 5000+ extra unnessasary clicks extra.
- aschocobo, on 10/11/2007, -27/+16i prefer this commenting system. now comment abuse can rot in hell. i just wish it weren't so damn slow.
- Light11, on 10/11/2007, -8/+158yea its way harder to find my comments
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -17/+3Ctrl + f Light11
- sinbonders, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Doesn't work when it's hidden.
We need to make sure this gets more diggs than the official post. That would be awesome. - greatromance, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Are you looking at the same comment system everyone else is looking at? Ctrl+F is now useless to find your comment(s),at least in a timely and useful way.
- norbiu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Comment Display Options > Expand Full Tree
wait 5 to 10 years
CTRL+F light11
- sinbonders, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Doesn't work when it's hidden.
- Light11, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23which is what i used to do, but if u reply to someone, then you gotta remember which one it was open it up all this *****
- jues, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2zOMG this sucks....
- JenadaeXX, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2yea i almost didnt see u down here
- jues, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2zOMG this sucks....
- logic, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3I found your comment while looking for my comment. Haha
- gothsquirrel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I do agree with that. I hop they change it to automaticly show conversations that you have been involved with. I'm still saying it's a huge step in the right direction
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -17/+3Ctrl + f Light11
- houndeyex, on 10/11/2007, -40/+7Oh no! Now I can't reply to get a top comment spot!
Stop crying you bunch of losers. (Oh no, I'm going to get dugg down!)- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -10/+1bant
- SiRwhilms, on 10/11/2007, -32/+26I like the design, the only problem is that the AJAX loads preform poorly... if it were faster, it would be just right for me.
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12color scheme is also gross.
- thedez, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1it's the same color scheme! you're making stuff up.
- Noobuntu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It's not that bad... it's just a bit flat w/ marked square borders.
- theblacknight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I agree, at least when the whole page used to load slowly, I'd open it in a new tab from my RSS feed and then check out the next RSS feed, while my browser did all the loading in the background. Now, when a comment interests me and I want to see if there are interesting comments, I have to waste my time waiting for the additional comments to load. I know the whole point of this site is to not be being productive, but please don't waste my time.
- Jambon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It's actually faster for me. For some reason, the old Digg comment system was slow as hell. Granted, this is on a 667mhz celeron, but I've had Digg comment pages take over 10 minutes to load, then simply quit. Slashdot will at least give out the unresponsive script warning early enough for it not to bog down the whole computer. I've stayed away from comment pages for this reason. They're just too damn slow. This system at least is faster to initially load.
Also, I really like the response box being right next to the comment you're replying too. I hated going to the bottom of the page to reply. - lowter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It looks pretty, just isn't functional.
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12color scheme is also gross.
- freefm, on 10/11/2007, -12/+20good, concept, bad implementation, there must be something weird about that "fetching" script. I bet there's a simpler way to code it that's faster. They should just use the script for hiding and show comments (ie: they all load, but aren't open at first) That way, while the page takes a while to load, it's fast from then on out.
- jull1234, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1very insightfulnot.
- BigBadHoss, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3that's exactly what they were trying to fix, page load times. honestly though if you want short page load times, just use the rss feed, also there's no ads!
- handsoffme, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2i suspect digg is actually just having to cope with its rising bandwidth cost and figured that by not loading all the comments initially it would have a positive effect on their bills. but what do i know im in deep tonight
- gothsquirrel, on 10/11/2007, -21/+33The fetching of replies kinda sucks, but i like it. It prevents hijacking and helps keep different subject separated far better. I hated seeing hundreds or replies for a comment i didn't care to read about. Nor did i like skimming past hundreds of comments for the first post just because someone wanted more attention
- jeriqo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4You seem to be the only person who got it..
No more first comment 200 replies- szembek, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Exactly!

- big2, on 10/11/2007, -17/+0HUH
- speedyf40, on 10/11/2007, -17/+1Meh...
- YuriSakazaki, on 10/11/2007, -9/+171I hate having to click like 8 levels to read all the comments. This is Dugg, wish I could bury the new comment system.
- Samus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2soon, we're going to find out who the real owners of digg are.
hint: not kevin rose or that jay something-or-other. - jspegele, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3You don't have to . . . Comment Display Options / Expand Full Tree
- Samus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2soon, we're going to find out who the real owners of digg are.
