- hollywoodphony, on 03/25/2008, -7/+101You think that's bad? What about the time I had tea with Mohammad?
- inactive, on 03/25/2008, -6/+80An intellectual art film is taken down, but 2Girls1Cup is still up? Thank goodness Network Solutions is looking out for my poor tender sensibilities, and making sure they don't get bruised.
/sarcasm - KevinRoseMustDy, on 03/25/2008, -0/+55Why can't these hate speech websites get some web designers?
- freedomwv, on 03/25/2008, -4/+47How can speech be a crime. The whole idea of hate speech makes no sense to me at all. There is always the option of not going to a website that you don`t like. Don`t take away others liberty just so you can feel more safe. People will always offend others in a free society. I hate these weak people who want to cry to the government when they see or hear something that offends them. Hell, these days if you tell a joke and the wrong person hears it you can even loose your damn job or even end up in court! The world is going crazy these days.
- KevinRoseMustDy, on 03/25/2008, -1/+36"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"
- DutchMacUser, on 03/25/2008, -5/+29On 9/11, 2001 New York was attacked by islamists, 2974 innocent victims died. However, it seems that in order to avoid escalation, Islam cannot be blamed. This was the result of a few bad muslims that misunderstood their own religion. I am all for avoiding escalation, but not at the price of avoiding public debate about the value of religion in general and Islam in particular. Free speech first!
- poidh, on 03/25/2008, -5/+29So, websites insulting Jews, gays and non-whites get to stay up but a site exposing the horror of Islam gets suspended.
According to Network Solutions, violence pays. - carpespasm, on 03/25/2008, -1/+23because they're usually run by people who aren't educated enough to know how to run their own servers and sites?
- Rapter09, on 03/25/2008, -2/+19"There 'ought to be a limit to freedom of speech"
- BigManOnCampus, on 03/25/2008, -1/+17Did you offer to do his portrait?
- hello2usir, on 03/25/2008, -2/+172 girls 1 cup, in all likelihood, isn't hosted by Network Solutions.
Did you read the article? I guess most of the people commenting here didn't read it because it explicitly points out Network Solution's Acceptable Use Policy (http://www.networksolutions.com/legal/aup.jsp) which prohibits sites that contain "profane, indecent, or otherwise objectionable material of any kind or nature." In other words, Network Solutions is saying "It's our equipment. We'll host your content as long as we think it's okay, otherwise we reserve the right to remove it for whatever reasons we deem appropriate."
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big proponent of free speech, but this is nothing to get all pissy about. If your web host doesn't want to host your content then find another host. It's as simple as that. I hope he made a backup! - blazes816, on 03/25/2008, -0/+14Because godhateswebdesigners.
- inactive, on 03/25/2008, -0/+14Because these people hate a certain ethnic group or nationality, which immediately implies that they are dumbasses.
- EdwrdDiggrhands, on 03/25/2008, -1/+14This isn't a matter of free speech. It's a matter of Network Solutions deciding what it does and does not want to host, which is its right. The filmmaker will just have to go find another host...
- RealmDown, on 03/25/2008, -3/+15As long as he wasn't a cartoon, you're fine.
- EatingPie, on 03/25/2008, -9/+19I for one would never want a site taken down. In America, we have freedom of speech, and that means we must take the good with the bad. GodHatesFags is totally bogus (Christ teaches that God loves fags actually), but they still have a right to speak. And I have the right to disagree, and SAY SO because that's part of free speech too.
Certainly hosting the site at Network Solutions puts you under their user agreement. However, what bothers me most is that they're also a domain registrar, and what's to stop them from discontinuing domains with content that contains "hate speech."
My other concern is the limitation of this dialog because it's critical to Islam. I for one want dialog about Islam, especially in light of 9/11 and my personal conceptions about the religion. If they are misconceptions, how do I find out when dialog is stifled? As an example, Richard Dawkins has many anti-Religion (Christianity in particular) videos. But instead of censoring him, it offers us an opportunity to discuss the points he brings up
I don't know if it's just me, but I'm not seeing the same with Islam.
-Pie - DeathJux, on 03/25/2008, -0/+10I'm an amendment to be, yes an amendment to be, and I hope that they will ratify me.
There's a bunch of flag-burners who have got too much freedom
and I want to make it legal for policemen to beat 'em
'cause there's limits to our liberties...
at least I hope and pray that there are, 'cause these liberal freaks go too far
Recited from memory... I love that bit. - positron, on 03/25/2008, -0/+9The whole point of the 1st Amendment is to protect the expression of unpopular opinions and ideas. Don't like it? You're free to tell us why, unless some numbnuts who thinks Freedom of Speech goes to far gets their way.
- EdwrdDiggrhands, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6This isn't a matter of crime. It's a matter of Network Solutions deciding what it does and does not want to host. I don't get why so many people are incapable of separating the government from the private sector.
For the record, I agree that it's a lame move on NS's part, but it's also the company's right. If this becomes common enough practice that it becomes a systemic problem, then some opportunistic entrepreneurs will start a hosting company that doesn't censor content, and they'll make good cash doing it. - meruru, on 03/25/2008, -1/+9I'm going to wait and give Network Solutions the chance to do the right thing and restore the site. They probably got a swarm of complaints about the site in a very short period of time, panicked, and suspended it to review the complaints. Hopefully they will restore the site.
- iMike360, on 03/25/2008, -3/+11So no one can criticizes Islam because of there worried there will be riots and deaths? Don't you think thats an over reaction.
Note: I'm not religious. - inactive, on 03/25/2008, -3/+11"...Christ teaches that God loves fags actually"
And the flying spaghetti monster teaches that noodles are tasty, whats your point? - acdcfanbill, on 03/25/2008, -0/+8"Or offer money to anyone who kills you?"
That is conspiracy to commit murder, and somewhat currently unprotected. - Rotzooi, on 03/25/2008, -2/+9Looks like someone did a painting of your teaparty: http://home.twcny.rr.com/dtz/images/prophet_on_rug ...
- BaronVonZ, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6Thats because (according to network solutions) jews, gays, and non-whites don't have a tendency of getting violent when reading something they don't like. Whats that really saying?
- DeathJux, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6While what you state is completely correct, I would suggest learning a lesson in tact, as starting any communication by insulting your audience pretty much kills your ethos and all but guarantees you a trip to digg-downsville.
- SharkyTech, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7BEHEAD ALL THOSE WHO SAY ISLAM IS A VIOLENT RELIGION!
- JorgeGT, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5Uh, sicience is not truth at all, it's just a working approximation. Math is the only pure truth: http://xkcd.com/263/
- lotsa1s, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5If you have a right not to be offended by someone saying mean things about black people, I have a right not to be offended by someone saying mean things about the president.
Libel and anti hate speech laws are some of the most prominent threats to liberty we face today. Free speech is absolute, it either exists in a pure, unregulated, and untouched form or it doesn't exist at all, and as long as I'm not directly endangering someone by speaking, I have to right to offend whoever I want however I want to. - Rotzooi, on 03/25/2008, -3/+8Because I've read his party's manifest.
- sgtpppr, on 03/25/2008, -1/+6Then i say I have the right to host giant gay porn billboards in your front lawn. Oh wait, it's your property, so you can decide what goes on it. Sounds like exactly what NetSol is doing here. There is ALWAYS another hosting company.
- Super6, on 03/25/2008, -1/+6An attack on any free speech is an attack on all free speech.
- Hetman, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5If the terrorist have that kind of reach we have a way bigger problem than realizing a video criticizing them.
- clickwir, on 03/25/2008, -1/+5***** you network solutions. Just host and register, let other people worry about policing the internet.
- NerdzCo, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4Romans 7:6 But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.
So do I win now? - parax, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4Network Solutions is a private company and you don't have a right to use their services if you don't agree with their terms.
- inactive, on 03/25/2008, -2/+6It's pretty sad that their sites being up is taken as the government "letting" them be up. The goverment doesn't "let" anybody do anything. They have absolutely no authority over anybody unless they violate a law.
As long as these guys are hosting on private servers the government can't do anything about it, and it's pretty sad that people are even considering the government having any say in it. - inactive, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5BOYCOTT NETWORK SOLUTIONS
- clickwir, on 03/25/2008, -1/+5So if I run a hosting company, and someone starts up a website and hosts it with me. And that website has negative words about a particular subject, then I make the assumption that "hey, if people see those negative words, there could be trouble"... then I block/take it down... isn't that just as bad as saying the negative words?
Basically I'm just saying "Yes! I agree that those people are trouble. And we don't want them to see your site or we'll have more trouble. Those people are known for it!" - clickwir, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4Assuming that if someone criticizes Islam and there will be "trouble" as a result of it, is just as bad as censoring it. All you are doing is re-enforcing their negativity about said subject.
- lysdexic, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4"claimed that you sexually assaulted a trash can"
If it's said in a non-satirical manner it's called libel. In some states libel is a crime. In others, only a civil matter. Either way, unprotected speech. - Admut239, on 03/25/2008, -1/+5Couldn't have said it better.
- ZaZ2137, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4The word isn't racist its the person who is or isn't.
- solid12345, on 03/25/2008, -2/+6Here is the short and simple reason: the guys at Network Solutions don't feel like being hunted down and beheaded.
- strictnein, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4Capwin's comment is an example of how amazingly ignorant people are of what their "rights" actually entail.
- raffyoh, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4people are entitled to promote their ***** opinions. we've had enough infringements on our personal freedoms.
- SaladCactusKing, on 03/26/2008, -2/+6The terrorist group Hezbollah's English website is hosted by Network Solutions. Source:https://my.mirahost.com/order/viewwhois.php?domain ...
So allow me to ask, which is worse in terms of hate speech, a website of a full on world condemned terrorist group that has orchestrated suicide attacks, assassinations, and attacks on civilians, or the ramblings of some nutty dutch politican? - PeppermintPig, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3Agree with DeathJux.. scotticus has a bad habit of doing this sort of thing...
But I would point out that positron made no inference that free speech trumps the rights of those who run or own newspapers, networks or programs. - BelatedHero, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3"We attempted to find other potentially controversial sites that were up and running through Network Solutions... and a mysterious site that has nothing but a login box located at antichristian.com."
Was no one else intrigued by this? - Cl1mh4224rd, on 03/26/2008, -1/+4> "Because godhateswebdesigners."
That the Earth didn't open up and swallow the Microsoft campus just before the introduction of Internet Explorer is all the proof that I need... -
