- cma3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16over 100 rss feeds on 5 tabs coming through for me just fine via netvibes.......check your connect.
- wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@JWood, because Netvibes is way better than Google Personalized Homepage
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11why should that be under Linux/UNIX?? *lol*
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Should probably be under Software, industry news, or Linux/UNIX
Good article though. - Darc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Netvibes is cool. I favor them slightly over Google's Personalized Homepage for the appearance and some functionality. I have 3 home pages set in Firefox:
- Netvibes
- Google Personalized Homepage
- digg.
Now that I mention it... what home pages do the rest of you use? - blogkitten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Mine is working fine too.
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3- Google.co.in (My gateway to the world)
- Apple.com/startpage (Default, yet nice)
- Caminobrowser.org/start (Beautiful!)
I get to Digg via RSS. - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Mine works great too... Whats their business model?
Could it be hope that google buys it? - JWood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why would Google buy it when they have their own personallized start page?
- Tawni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4And so begins Dot Com boom 2.0..... may the bubble not burst this time
- Darc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's a greasemonkey script I put together based on another one I found on userscripts. It kind of transforms the look of the Google Personalized Homepage to be more Netvibes-like.
http://gotfoxed.com/greasemonkey-scripts/000001-google-ig-netvibes-style.htm - wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I used to use Google Personalized Homepage, then I switched to Netvibes, and now I use Digg.
It's perfect with my RSS feeds in Safari's bookmark bar. - RichM, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is good news. I love Netvibes. It's better than the Google personal home page IMO.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google might buy they them if they didn't already have a competing product. Since they do, they could just implement the best features from Netvibes and then crush them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2that doesn't matter - google has far more users with their personalized startpage. if there were bigger competition, they make it better.
- Darc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Because Google's slightly lacks in comparison. Netvibes tracks things such as feeds you've read. They also load the feed first in their own page, AJAX style, in case you don't want to navigate to the parenting page. You can collapse certain sections. Netvibes just did the personalized homepage better in some areas. Obviously Google excels in others.... one of the main points being that it's integrated into the Google system, which is why I keep Google's Personalized Homepage as my secondary.
- Darc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@wpholmes
I'm assuming then that you use Safari as a primary browser. Does Safari not allow multiple home pages (to open in tabs), or do you choose to just allow one page? - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, as far as I know Safari only allows one home-page. I use the Saft and SafariStand plug-ins, so if anyone knows if you can do multiple home-pages with either of them, let me know.
- iggee85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2google netvibes yahoo
- whiteghetto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use firefox at work it is..
wave (work db), gmail, netvibes, woot, 360.yahoo
- I get my digg via netvibes
at home I just have google as my homepage - simpleblob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is my list (for the record, I use maxthon which suits me better than firefox)
- Gmail.com : For checking email
- Netvibes.com : I collected all my news here (Digg also)
- Blogger.com : my blog in case I want to post something - gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I run my main page as a personalize page on Protopage, then inside my protopage, I have one window with my netvibes homepage, and the other with my google calendar page.
On my netvibes page I have 4 tabs, one for my todo lists, one for podcasts, one for newsfeeds and a tab for all apple news feeds, and the last one is for the meebo chat thing.
I think I'm addicted, I need help...
I tried to add my protopage homepage, as another page in my protopage page, but the system doesn't allow recursive urls I guess..... too bad, I wanted to see if my computer would explode. - wspence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I old school if I don't see the point in these portals? I mean I like the whole idea of everything being custom and all and RSS feeds and yadda yadda. However, this is just a new way of looking at the old portal pages of way back. Nothing new. What's the hardcore biz plan here? I just don't see it.
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>I used netvibes for a long time as my home page, but it just loads too slow.
I think its because netvibes is CLIENT SIDE....and Google's homepage is server side.
Of course that means that you have to wait for Google to go refresh the data for a site in order see new content...with netvibes you go get it yourself and always see the real-time information. - manuelhp42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am feeling adventurous. I think they have turned into a prime target for Google to snatch them:
http://manuelhp42.blogspot.com/2006/10/googles-next-purchase-netvibes.html - MicroBerto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nobody could make money off of all these portal sites last time around. How's it going to change this time?
I'm extremely bearish on this. I just don't see the big idea and how they will make revenue. - digid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder how netvibes is going to make money. I don't really care for using net vibes for rss feeds. I use a firefox plugin called sage which opens a bar on the left with a list of all my feeds.
- Darc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I posted a news article about this here: http://www.digg.com/mods/Make_Google_ig_Look_more_like_Netvibes_Firefox_Greasemonkey_script
- samuel514, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Netvibes is working perfectly for me =)
- loly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Netvibes is french.
Web 2.0 french app come to us.
do you know linkedfeed. ? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's a lot of venture cap. They'll be paying that off for years to come.......hopefully turn a profit somewhere along the line.
- mkokes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'd have to say google's personalized home page excels when it comes to performance. I used netvibes for a long time as my home page, but it just loads too slow.
I do like the tabs they've added though... - Juklien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used Sage too, until I discovered Netvibes ! It has a big advantage ; you can't read your favorites feed everywhere and check some services (I mean del.icio.us, gmail, box.net, meebo or the weather :D). And for start a web session, it's perfect.
I use Netvibes everyday, but I have the same question as you, how they make money ? If someone knows ... - midlifecrisis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To turn a profit they would have to generate some revenue first. I simply can't see the business model here. Maybe the investors know something we don't. I'm also rather skeptical about the 5 million user figure in the TechCrunch article.
- silverstrike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2blank. I don't like my browser trying to go off and fetch a bunch of pages on startup, especially Netvibes. all their AJAX loading scripts noticeably slow the load time.
I can get there quick enough with a Toolbar button, if I want.
(Netvibes is still cool though) - neotheone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Netvibes rocks! I've had no performance problems whatsoever, besides, I kinda liked the interface much better than Google Personalized home or even Pageflakes..
- Juklien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a very good news ! I hope good luck to Netvibes ! :) So, someone knows how they can earn money ? And yes, Netvibes is french, just like Wikio, an other french web 2.0 startup.
- samuel514, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think the bubble is with far more stronger companies this time.
- Darc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I do wish someone would give me $15 million though.
- Splutterbug, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Hopefully this means they can get the damn thing working again! Since the server upgrade last week it's been running amazingly slow and buggy. Great idea, did work great hopefully they can fix it, I'm still holding out.
