    - Netvibes
    - Google Personalized Homepage
    - digg.

    Now that I mention it... what home pages do the rest of you use?

    It's perfect with my RSS feeds in Safari's bookmark bar.

  • Darc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Because Google's slightly lacks in comparison. Netvibes tracks things such as feeds you've read. They also load the feed first in their own page, AJAX style, in case you don't want to navigate to the parenting page. You can collapse certain sections. Netvibes just did the personalized homepage better in some areas. Obviously Google excels in others.... one of the main points being that it's integrated into the Google system, which is why I keep Google's Personalized Homepage as my secondary.

    I'm assuming then that you use Safari as a primary browser. Does Safari not allow multiple home pages (to open in tabs), or do you choose to just allow one page?
  • koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, as far as I know Safari only allows one home-page. I use the Saft and SafariStand plug-ins, so if anyone knows if you can do multiple home-pages with either of them, let me know.

  • gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I run my main page as a personalize page on Protopage, then inside my protopage, I have one window with my netvibes homepage, and the other with my google calendar page.

    On my netvibes page I have 4 tabs, one for my todo lists, one for podcasts, one for newsfeeds and a tab for all apple news feeds, and the last one is for the meebo chat thing.

    I think I'm addicted, I need help...

    I tried to add my protopage homepage, as another page in my protopage page, but the system doesn't allow recursive urls I guess..... too bad, I wanted to see if my computer would explode.

However, this is just a new way of looking at the old portal pages of way back. Nothing new. What's the hardcore biz plan here? I just don't see it.

    I think its because netvibes is CLIENT SIDE....and Google's homepage is server side.

    Of course that means that you have to wait for Google to go refresh the data for a site in order see new content...with netvibes you go get it yourself and always see the real-time information.

    I'm extremely bearish on this. I just don't see the big idea and how they will make revenue.
  • digid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder how netvibes is going to make money. I don't really care for using net vibes for rss feeds. I use a firefox plugin called sage which opens a bar on the left with a list of all my feeds.

    I do like the tabs they've added though...
  • Juklien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used Sage too, until I discovered Netvibes ! It has a big advantage ; you can't read your favorites feed everywhere and check some services (I mean del.icio.us, gmail, box.net, meebo or the weather :D). And for start a web session, it's perfect.
    I use Netvibes everyday, but I have the same question as you, how they make money ? If someone knows ...
  • midlifecrisis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To turn a profit they would have to generate some revenue first. I simply can't see the business model here. Maybe the investors know something we don't. I'm also rather skeptical about the 5 million user figure in the TechCrunch article.
  • silverstrike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2blank. I don't like my browser trying to go off and fetch a bunch of pages on startup, especially Netvibes. all their AJAX loading scripts noticeably slow the load time.

    I can get there quick enough with a Toolbar button, if I want.

    (Netvibes is still cool though)

  • Splutterbug, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Hopefully this means they can get the damn thing working again! Since the server upgrade last week it's been running amazingly slow and buggy. Great idea, did work great hopefully they can fix it, I'm still holding out.
