- muteSirens, on 01/05/2009, -23/+64Better idea
1. Buy Xbox 360
2. Sign-up for XBL Gold
3. Download Netflix movie thing
4. Link account/start trial
5. Realize movie selection sucks
5. buy games for your new Xbox 360
6. ???????
7. RRoD - Jektal, on 01/05/2009, -0/+24Best idea:
1. Put older PC in living room
2. Connect to TV
3. Buy wireless keyboard w/ trackball
4. Watch whatever you want, including Netflix instant play, Hulu, YouTube, anything downloaded from Torrents - UnpossibIe, on 01/05/2009, -0/+19I've been using Netflix streaming for the last 5 months or so, and I like a lot. You're not going to get a lot of recent movies though. If you want to catch up on movies you missed over the years, or like foreign films it's pretty decent. If Netflix wants to dominate the home streaming market, they're gonna have to dish out a lot of cash to get much bigger library than what they have now.
- yournamehere, on 01/05/2009, -2/+21I don't know, the XBox 360 streaming Netflix has Starz content added which are fairly new movies. It's not as huge and as recent a catalog as the per DVD/Blu-Ray they send out but there are some pretty good ones in there.
- fudsak, on 01/05/2009, -0/+15I don't think I'd want a white TV and a remote control with only one button.
- glake, on 01/05/2009, -1/+14Most interested in what else LG does with this. Will they add Hulu, etc.? Or are they just doing this one service?
- Scott2, on 01/05/2009, -0/+11Not to mention exorbitantly expensive.
- loobis, on 01/05/2009, -2/+13If you're only streaming, and not getting movies mailed to you as well, you're losing some value there...
- NJank, on 01/05/2009, -2/+126. keep throwing things at "new" media PC because you can't hear quiet conversation over Fan/HD noise.
7. Bitch at PC when windows gives you the forced reboot in 4 minutes message when you were in the middle of a full screen suspense thriller with 7 minutes left to go.
8. fight for a year creating a myth-box, until you realize it never really fixed 6. - inactive, on 01/05/2009, -1/+10I Hotbox. That's equivalent to 7-8 large pizzas a month.
- Quicksilver4648, on 01/05/2009, -0/+9@Conwaysb0718,
Why would you add them to your instant queue if your never going to watch them? - Bradl3y, on 01/05/2009, -0/+8Sure, that works just fine if you are single. "The masses" however, are not single, and would prefer to be comfortable on a sofa with their partner at a reasonable distance from their television.
- chris4404, on 01/05/2009, -0/+8I have a 360 but I prefer to use my Tivo for streaming Netflix instead.
Yea the selection isn't the best but give it time...plus its $8.95 a month, I mean come on that's two rentals a month. - dipdog21, on 01/05/2009, -0/+8As mentioned above I also use Netflix on my 360. There are some good documentaries, tv programs and older movies that you can stream. I found it a pleasant free ad on to my already existing Netflix account. If it wasn't for this streaming service I would have never picked up on the tv series Jericho.

- BrandonJM, on 01/05/2009, -3/+10I'd like to see what, if anything, Apple has planned. They saved up an awful lot of cash and there are rumored discussions about revamping the Apple TV. One has to wonder how far away they are from producing a TV of their own.
- nonymous666, on 01/05/2009, -1/+7Netflix via xbox fails in that they require you to have (pay for) Gold XBL.
- diggdatt, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6Dont you have to have a TV that supports DVI or HD for good quality?
I've hooked up a graphics card to my tv once and the quality was horrible even at 640x480 - Jektal, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6Netflix has always had a headstart on Blockbuster. I'm amazed that company is still around.
- imautobot, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6I know I'm tempting fate by mentioning this, but.... I happen to own an original launch day 360, and so far (knock on wood), NO RRoD.
The TV shows you can get off netflix is cool, but I agree their selection (for the most part) sucks. - Scrappy1850, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6my computer is already hooked up to my TV. why cant they give me the option to get higher-def videos than what i already get? dont tell me "bandwidth" because my bandwidth is STRONG.
- NeoCortex, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6Personally, I'm waiting for the iTV Shuffle. You can only watch one channel, and it's chosen at random when you power on your TV.
- vilago, on 01/05/2009, -2/+7an apple LCD or plasma would be ***** great....
oops nevermind cause it would cost 3x more than the current best and be only barely better. - megerisi, on 01/05/2009, -2/+7I guess that means Netflix will have a headstart on Blockbusters and Apple, although Apple never fails to impress! I for one think that this is an excellent development.
- chamberlanderic, on 01/05/2009, -0/+55. realize that the grainy quality of youtube and friends look even worst on your TV, but hey it's free what do you expect.
- tymme, on 01/05/2009, -0/+5They were thinking about it but stopped when they realized Sony's already covered the 'pay $500 more for $50 worth of quality and $450 for brand name' market in TVs....
- TritonX, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4Can't wait for the ISPs that provide video service to further cripple their internet service.
- jdmonmou, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4Well said. It would be especially nice if they would instantly stream newly released DVD movies since Netflix is almost always out of stock of new release DVDs.
- OPR8R, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4My understanding is that Netflix is running into a lot of resistance from the movie studios while trying to expand their library.
Sucks though... Seems like if they're aloud to "rent" discs, there should not be a problem with them streaming. - mogebier, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5What do you mean a head start on Apple?? Apple made that failure called "Apple TV". Nobody cared because things had DRM all over them and the prices sucked.
Netflix is just doing it right. - troub, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4The Starz content is part of the streaming library now, it's not just for Xbox.
- DivisibleByZero, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4Get the Roku player. It's about $100, looks like it's going to support Hulu soon.
- sexybobo, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4If it is like the roku box then it is not netflix exclusive. It wouldn't make much sense building something into the tv that is netflix exclusive.
- timusca, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5A) It was never promised.
B) Never. - NJank, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4he put the rrod in. that = profit on someone else.
- Jektal, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3And is their software updateable? If so, is it hackable?
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3Daaaaaaaayum!
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -1/+4Lol. I have a media pc.
Youtube is not a replacement, it's added. You get netflix + tivo + internet + surround sound mp3 player + large screen gaming rig + downloaded video player + dvd/bluray player.
My box is entirely fanless. There's no noise. Even my vid card is fanless (9600gt).
I decided to build it when I was about to upgrade all my very old audio/video equipment (blu-ray player, surround sound system, HDTV hdd recorder). For about 3/4 of the price I got all that in a tiny box, except I get to go on the net and play PC games in my living room.
I honestly don't understand why so few people do this. It's really easy and it's a huge upgrade. Plus it removes about 60lbs of equipment from your living room. Looks nice. All I have is the PC, an Xbox360 and the TV (and speakers of course). - DivisibleByZero, on 01/05/2009, -2/+5More wasted resources a few years down the line when Netflix goes out of business and some other company is providing the streaming video.
- warpsmith, on 01/05/2009, -2/+5I'm doing the Netflix trial right now, and this announcement would be a lot more interesting if their selection of streaming movies was better. As it stands, the selection is not so hot.
- pcp777, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3It looks great, it now comes out at 780i. maybe you should see the service before you make comments about it.
- briguymaine, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3I signed up for Netflix again after a few years without just because of the Xbox 360 feature. People complain about not enough movies but there is plenty of content and it added exactly $0.00 to my subscription price.
- timusca, on 01/05/2009, -1/+4I signed up for a Netflix trial to stream on my TiVo HD only to realize the selection sucks ass. I'm canceling my membership ASAP.
- Jektal, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3Yes, you need an HDTV with DVI (ideally) or HDMI in
- FXNGLAS, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3If only they could figure out how to incorporate bittorrent and The Pirate Bay into a tv...
- DivisibleByZero, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3Not sure how xBox handles it, but I like the way the Roku dedicated Netflix player handles skipping. It fans out a list of screenshots and you scroll through them, pick the point you want to skip to. It's a quick way of finding a particular thing without having to wait for buffering.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3And since RF wireless will suck for your wireless keyboard/mouse sitting on the coffee table, get BLUETOOTH WIRELESS. It's still laggy, but it works.
I have my PC hooked up to my 50" plasma. Wireless N back to my computer room with 10M aDSL. Torrents. 720p movies usually don't "come out on torrents" until a couple weeks after the normal DVD rips, but I've learned to live with it.
Gaming is decent, if you can learn to live with the mouse lag. The only problem is sitting. If I sit on my couch, I have to lean forward to use the mouse and keyboard, and that is really poor posture. If I sit on the floor and have keyboard/mouse on coffee table, my butt hurts after about an hour. - sexybobo, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3The roku box just got an updated about a week back that will enable sites like hulu and others to be streamed to the box. They have not started yet but they will early 2009.
- highpitch83, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2That's interesting... as of this morning I have 182 titles on my DVD queue and 99 on the Watch Now... different strokes for different folks.
That being said... if I could get Netflix AND Hulu through the 360, MS would have me locked in 4 life. (of course that will never happen because MS is already getting people to pay for those shows through XBL, too bad) - vexvex, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Why not create an open platform hardware box that allows instantly deliverable content in digital format, that allows any content provider the ability to access the box itself. No one is stuck with just one provider. Kinda like the web itself.
