If I'm chilling to my favorite songs in my car its probably not the radio i'm listening to, its likely an iPod or custom-mixed CD.
Conversely, if I am listening to the radio that fuzzy din I'm hearing probably isn't a pirate radio station - it's probably the god awful ***** terrible stuff they try to pass off as music being chucked about the "legitimate" station's airwaves these days. - lololol1, on 06/06/2009, -0/+36I`ve never experienced a pirated radio station. I feel like I`m missing out.
- absurdist, on 06/06/2009, -2/+29How about the UK simply open up parts of the spectrum for low power unlicensed broadcasting, as is being proposed here in the U.S.? Or does that interfere with the nanny state's control of information?
- D3koy, on 06/06/2009, -4/+23Hey, if pirate radio stations are willing to play good music, I've got no problems....However, it's usually some guy sitting in his basement talking about 9/11 truth now, but it's still good for a laugh.

- bbqribs, on 06/06/2009, -1/+19The Jesus Freak stations exploited a loophole in the FCC repeater rules, and ***** it up for everybody. Now the religious folks are trying to say that the FCC is against Christian radio with their new rules but what happened is that Christian radio violated the rules in so many ways, that they have ruined it for everybody else.
Basically, Jesus stations were buying up little repeater licenses that were meant for small town/local use, and broadcasting from several states away, using the repeaters. The FCC became annoyed at this and closed the loophole and the bible bangers took it as some assault on Christianity. - Dumbledorito, on 06/06/2009, -1/+19You mean there's a chance someone will improve the content provided by my local ClearChannel cookie-cutter FM station? Where can I purchase this service?
- jmac9, on 06/06/2009, -4/+20Does it mention that the airways are -- public property
not corporate locked up frequencies.
We own the airway -- all of it -- we through our whimps in congress
lease out the air to corporate monsters who pay the big bucks for the access.
We could reclaim all the stations - clean house - start all over again
Ah the thrill of it -
to the bandwidths men! - inactive, on 06/06/2009, -1/+17oooh spectrum crime that sounds scary like a rainbow and a rampage.
- nesagwa, on 06/06/2009, -0/+13The funny thing is that you used to be able to buy a Class E broadcasting license, but the big companies got the FCC to eventually only give out a few a year and then later completely stop.
Nice that theyre trying to bring them back, but they should have never been taken a way in the first place. - SSPink, on 06/06/2009, -1/+13Clear Channel isn't going to let it happen in the U.S.
- farhanfarn, on 06/06/2009, -2/+14FTA: Jammers create holes in cellphone coverage that lead to complaints from mobile phone networks which have paid billions for blanket coverage - and Ofcom found, for instance, that last year a Mosque and a theatre had installed them. Ironically, people afraid of cellphone radiation are major buyers of jammers - not realising that they work because they give off higher-energy microwaves than the phone itself.
their not worried about the microwaves they want people to shut the ***** up while they pray to god or are watching their movie. - yerdaddy, on 06/06/2009, -2/+13Commercial radio tastes like ***** / not fit for human consumption.
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -1/+11You just don't get laid enough, do you?
- SSPink, on 06/06/2009, -1/+10Alright, sea monkeys, you're on the prowl with Howlin' Mad Murphy, so get your fignuts on!
- maynardw, on 06/06/2009, -1/+9Someone is having some tampon issues
- MidnightTide, on 06/06/2009, -3/+10Awww...corporations are butthurt yet again? Must really burn their asses that we have alternative forums of information. Sorry Mr CEO, we all arn't a bunch of sheep.
- albator, on 06/06/2009, -0/+7You do realize that broadcasting in an improper band can jam plane frequency or an other important service ?
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -2/+9What this article COMPLETELY IGNORES is that radio is the last form of communication that is still being held under the thumb of a few corporate scumbags for no reason other than sheer, unbridled Greed. If you've ever tried to get a legitimate radio station licensed, (as I have) you soon realize that there is absolutely NO WAY to do it. None. That is, unless you're a giant conglomerate with millions of dollars in liquid assets. Imagine if you couldn't put up a web site on the Internet unless Microsoft said you could... and then they made one of the pre-requisites for web site ownership "Must be a subsidiary of Microsoft". Well, that's almost exactly what's happened with Radio. They blather on and on about "spectrums" and "bandwidth", but for hell's sake, this isn't 1943. It also ignores the fact that even under the current (purposefully primitive) method of carving up the radio dial, there's still room for hundreds of channels in most cities.
Radio remains primitive and exclusive for one reason: Advertising dollars. The giant channels don't want anyone providing content that might detract from their revenue stream. It's exactly the kind of mentality that's nearly destroyed the American economy and wiped out nearly every vestige of progress and innovation from our culture. - oda1, on 06/06/2009, -0/+7"Spectrum Crime"
Geez, there's a crime for everything these days. Next thing you'll know is there'll be "Murder Crime" - norman619, on 06/06/2009, -2/+9Amen! Wish I could digg you twice.
- ashadocat, on 06/06/2009, -1/+8Why?
- TheCash, on 06/06/2009, -2/+8I love pirate radio. I wish we had more stations here in Alaska, but the local group of the NAB came down hard on the few that were broadcasting a few years back, and no one else has had the stones to go up against them since.
- TyIsOwned, on 06/06/2009, -0/+6dugg for truth
- norman619, on 06/06/2009, -4/+10LOL!!! Your utter cluelessness is adorable. Are you potty trained?
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -0/+6Yeah, it's like they are trying to say they own a certain shade of green. Oh wait, that's exactly what they are saying.
- dsmx, on 06/06/2009, -0/+6In the UK all the analogue radio signal spectrum has been used, there's none left to set aside.
- inkswamp, on 06/06/2009, -3/+8A significant number of Digg users tend to moderate based on whether they like what you have to say or whether they agree with your opinion which strikes me as childish and insecure. I tend to moderate people up even if I disagree as long it's reasonably expressed and relevant, and that's how moderation was done generally when I first joined this site. I think a lot of kids have found Digg since then and changed things for the worse.
- Roobix, on 06/06/2009, -0/+5Translation:
Why is YOU capitalized in the story description?
It's like one of those old fairytale storybooks where they used to massively capitalize the first letter of course!
And the author just copy/pasted the newscientist article. - Jeebugorn, on 06/06/2009, -0/+5love XM radio
- maynardw, on 06/06/2009, -1/+6I think the aliens destroyed the trade towers with camel sex
- TheScreamer, on 06/06/2009, -0/+4Dugg for the "nicely chilled plate of ambient beats..." on Shoutcast :)
- Houdini91, on 06/06/2009, -2/+6You can't stop the signal, Mal.
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -3/+7Igor, you're missing the point: you 9/11 Truthers are ***** *****, and nobody gives a ***** WHAT you have to say.
Every single one of your moronic theories have been debunked a thousand times. Yet still you fat, unhygienic retards sit around in your mommies basement claiming that you know more about "physics" than Scientific American and the several hundred actual Scientists that have researched the issue, all because you once saw a controlled demolition on the Discovery Channel. ***** you, ***** your parents who didn't club you on the head at birth, and ***** everyone who thinks like you. - IgorUnchained, on 06/06/2009, -1/+4Steal the air!
Talk Hard! - NeoTechni, on 06/06/2009, -2/+5"That sucks that someone cares enough about the truth to try and get it out to you"
No one is doing that though. 9/11 theorizers aren't doing that at all. - inactive, on 06/06/2009, -2/+5You've actually tasted *****? Wow. Good for you, I guess.
- moraji, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3Some of the comments on this story seem a little bit naive to say the least - having a regulated broadcast spectrum does not instantly make you into a repressive, overbearing nanny-state, it's just the only practical solution when you have something as precious and limited as radio / TV spectrum.
Where I live in London it's currently impossible to pick up half the FM stations I should be able to as there are simply so many pirates broadcasting on top of them. And don't kid yourselves that they do this out of a love of music or commitment to their fans *****, there's plenty of money to be made running a successful pirate radio station, how do you think they pay for all those replacement transmitters? - secrity, on 06/06/2009, -1/+4I did it by subscribing to XM radio.
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -3/+5Might want to actually read the article. Just a thought...
- rock774, on 06/06/2009, -2/+4If they move to the internet they are no longer Pirates !!
- Bleeding_Heart, on 06/06/2009, -1/+3If you put a sign up so people know they wont get a signal it should be all good.
- laser314, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2with out fcc forget wifi or any device where manufactures have to agree one freq. allocation EVERYBODY would be interfering with everybody else. 10M band amateur radio is polluted enough with illegal CBers with modified equipment it would be a nightmare without some regulation. Neighbor buys a new cordless phone and your satellite tv stops working due to interference. etc
- secrity, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2It is the fault of the FCC for not enforcing the regulations. As much as I dislike Clear Channel, pirate radio stations are not their fault.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 06/06/2009, -2/+4Igor, you're blocked for being one of these douchebags who is so buried in ignorance you haven't even bothered to read the FACTS that debunk scientifically all of your crazy theories. Stop listening to the mentally ill and get educated.
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2And here I thought America was the "land of freedom". I guess that means "freedom to do anything you want, as long as it doesn't inconvenience a multinational corporation".
The existing radio stations could fix the Bleedover problem in a heartbeat... if they wanted to. But they don't. It's not that they don't want Pirates bleeding into their frequency, it's that they don't want ANYONE broadcasting ANYTHING AT ALL except for themselves. Seriously, how damn hard would it be to just pass out more (and easier to obtain) low-power licenses? Most so-called "Pirates" would friggin' LOVE to go legit, if there were only any way in hell for them to do so. - albator, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2Light is not regulted and higher frequency
- NeoTechni, on 06/06/2009, -2/+4"for no reason other than sheer, unbridled Greed."
And safety. There are technologies that police/hospitals/ambulances/etc use that require clean channels - Dumbledorito, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1Really, "Amid," we'd love to hear the rationality.
Although sadly, they're already practically private. When was the last time any station got their license pulled? - shrudheuie, on 06/06/2009, -0/+1Whats worse is the ***** celine dion listner who pipes it through is ipod fm transmitter so that I get to listen to it at the light. I am going to make my own to overpower those little pieces of crap and pipe my own message to the offenders. I won't share it here, but if you are ever driving around with your ipod fm transmitter on an occupied station and all of a sudden you hear a voice prompting you to commit suicide in a most Cardine type way, you will know that I am near and finally got a free weekend.
