- DrakeGTA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I've always figured that the same guys who would compile their own kernel are the same dude that would turn their own carbs if they were born 20 years earlier.
- DrakeGTA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Ha ha, that wasn't what I expected at that link, but I clicked anyway.
- LRoy12, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I got the same thrill when I put a turbo in my car as when I modded my PC and Overclocked it.
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah, well remember kids... when you fsck up your latest custom Linux kernel and it crashes and burns, that's one thing.
When you make the same mistake with your car's kernel and it crashes and burns for real, that's quite another... - worxman02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Proud owner of a open source tuned Subaru WRX using maps from osecuroms.org . I'm surprised that openecu.org got into the NY Times. I wonder who wrote this article? (in the car community sense, not name, duh)
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The Megasquirt project is great. I helped my uncle build a Megasquirt FI system a couple years back. He took out the old worn-out 304 in his Wagoneer, and I designed the injection system at the same time he was rebuilding the engine. Made it real easy to drill and tap a few sensor ports on the intake manifold, modify the exhaust for an O2 sensor, etc. Would have been a lot easier to just drop in a TBI 350, but my uncle's an AMC purist. Now he's one of the few out there with a custom-built fuel injected 304.
Geeks and gearheads can produce some amazing results when they put their heads together. - wandog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6user:Tuesday1024

enjoy. - Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8http://megasquirt.info/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i'm not even gonna bother to look for a user/pass or register...
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Bah, so use http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/25/automobiles/autospecial/25hacking.html?ex=1319428800&en=c36bc89385305f9c&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss (no log in!)
- ricree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you have the bugmenot plugin, it takes all of two clicks to get in.
- tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Didn't work for me. Try:

- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3If I wasn't born in the 80's and hadn't grown up in world of high tech I am sure I would have been the guy who went under the hood and ripped his car apart on a weekly basis.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's funny, we used the 68HC11
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article ends so abruptly, am I missing something?
- lbytesxk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why is this news now? The Diablo Predator programmers have been on the market for years now.
And the article assumes anyone with programming skills could rewrite an ECU, BS, if you don't know cars general you will ***** something up, start screwing around with the A/F ratio for eaxample, and it's bye bye engine. - osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1tgui - that's awesome, I have an 06 STi and I have been looking to play with my ECU but it looks like I have to spend the money up front for the access-port and then have some "professional" give me a few maps for something like $500 bucks. I can probably figure out the electronic side of things, but when it comes to optimal timing and spark, I am no combustion expert so I would be at a loss. I would love to try out a few maps that are free, thanks for the links!
I am really interested in a "road trip" map which is fuel efficient, or maybe a winter high-performance map that can take advantage of cool temperatures and be really aggressive. It is just starting to get cool here and the subie is loving the cold air! - silveravnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been using a laptop to repair and mod my cars for years.

giacusa.com - petermoffat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, on the megasquirt.com site, check out the first answer of the FAQ, they use the 68HC908 micro! I remember at uni we used that to learn assembler and then for most of my embedded C/C++ projects. We even made an elaborate timer with a LCD display and clever sounds and beeps for drinking games..
- vuke69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1pgmfi.org is required reading for any hardcore obd0/obd1 honda geek.
I glad to see them get some exposure. - tgui, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I contribute to an open source project that modifies ECU rom data from osecuroms.org. Currently we support most Subaru ROMs and some (I think) Mitsubishi roms. I own an 04 STi and thus am limited in experience to what I drive. Specifically I work on 3D visualization and data interpolation.

In any case, open source car tuning is taking a hold and striking fear in the hearts of commercial tuning offerings from the likes of www.cobbtuning.com and www.ecutek.com .
We wil p0wn j00? I'm too old for 1337 sp34k. 27 years old in a month.... - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Okay.
- vuke69, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2mancat~ If you don't understand, then this story obviously isn't for you, so just go the ***** away.
