The Microsoft Corp. chairman's appearances in parody videos have long been a staple of Comdex and other digerati gatherings, showing a more-playful, self-deprecating side of the Redmond, Wash., tech titan and its leader. Mr. Gates's latest video incarnation, shown at the D: conference Monday, cast him in a send-up of "Napoleon Dynamite," with Mr. Gates tagging along with the movie's vertically haired title character (played by Jon Heder) and playing straight man to his rambling questions about Microsoft technology (no teleporting either of mice or men), listening patiently to Napoleon's Dungeons & Dragons-style ideas for Microsoft Bob, and weathering Napoleon's scorn that the powers that come along with Mr. Gates's knighthood are decidedly limited. A question for anyone who got that far:
Does anyone else hear ESPN and/or music in the background during the bluescreen, or is my computer just acting strangely? I had to turn my volume up all the way. A discussion on Jevon Walker is what I heard. That, and some Neil Young song that started about 10:30 in. It's a movie you either love or hate. Garden State was also a good indie film that came out at the same time. They had the same type of humor. I laugh my ass off at Stargate SG1 if that tells you anything too. I have been to many Comdex and CES shows where they poke fun at themselves and others. One of my favorite was when Bill dressed up as Harry Potter, and when he was poking (in good taste) jobs to Amazon.com founder. I wish I could download those videos. Napoleon Dynamite was never supposed to have a plot. In fact, it says it has no plot right on the back of the DVD.
I thought it was a hilarious movie. I've seen it 4 times. You have to see it at least twice to catch all the jokes.
