"They're watching you Neo..." - sbcea, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6OK, so I'm really confused. This is not a passport, right? It only allows you entry into countries that do not require passports. But you can use it to get back into America when traveling from a country where you would need to have a passport on you anyway. So, other than having a chip that tracks your moves and and extra $30 charge ... how is this a good thing?
- IRPro, on 09/17/2008, -0/+6"Privacy" and "Mark of the Beast type concerns aside, this is pretty cool. This sure would save many alot of trouble from leaving their passports at home on the way to the airport.
So is this RFID thing going to be completely recognized internationally someday? Using your NY DL in Paris? - cudealer, on 09/17/2008, -2/+6Miss Sample License Document is a hottie.
- hsinray, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4Can't all countries accept this and we can forget about passports?
- RogerStrong, on 09/17/2008, -0/+4No. It's not a passport.
It doesn't allow you to "pass in and out of Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean" - those countries don't require Americans to have a passport.
It allows Americans to pass in and out of *America*. It's a new *American* rule that Americans can't reenter the US without a passport.
When Canada mirrors the US policy - requiring Americans to have a passport to enter Canada the same way that Canadians will need a passport to enter the US - this ID won't be good enough. But it will be good enough to get home. - ScrewedThePooch, on 09/18/2008, -0/+3When you switch states and re-register with the other state's DMV, your passport is now null and void.
Also, since when did passports cost $150? I got mine for about 50. - inactive, on 09/18/2008, -1/+32 in 1... useful... I am sure NY drivers gonna like it!!..
It's a pity I don't live in NY! - RogerStrong, on 09/17/2008, -0/+2>> This is not a passport, right?
Correct.

Incorrect. Countries that don't require American passports are not going to be interested in this card.

This is strictly for getting back into the US. Americans will no longer be allowed to return to the US without flashing a passport. Or as an alternative, this card.
If you're coming back from a country that requires a passport, you simply use the passport to get back.
It's for tracking the movement of US citizens. The American government has also made agreements with other countries where any time an American flashes a passport to travel between other countries, say, between Britain and Germany - the US government gets notified. - slugicide, on 09/18/2008, -0/+2I got one of those RFID passport cards. I was pretty disappointed to find out they don't work with air travel. I guess the next time I find myself suddenly needing to cross into Canada I won't have to go home to get my passport.
- aacidusX, on 09/17/2008, -0/+1cant i already go into Canada with my regular ID?
- Coven, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1Actually, if you're going to the airport you'll still need your passport. This new EDL is only good for land and sea crossings into Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. If you're flying you need a passport.
- RogerStrong, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1Yes. But starting next year, you'll need a passport to return home.
