- szelij, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40How many days till someone sues Google for causing a drop in the value of their homes? Haha...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20My computer locked up for 30 seconds when I clicked on the Bronx.
- rolypolyman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20If your IP is in Sicily there's an extra polygon on the map that displays bodies in the Hudson.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20and boring.
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I wanna see Detroit
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I just snorted 8 lines of coke off a dead hooker's ass in my backyard and nobody cares. Oregon is great.

Scroll down, New York is on the 10 safest cities list, LA is on the 10 most dangerous. - Malchiah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I live in NYC and in case anyone was wondering...
- I am not in a gang
- I have never seen anyone get shot
- I have never been mugged or attacked, nor has my house ever been robbed
- I have never been arrested, nor do I know anyone that has
- I can walk the streets, ride the subway and take the rairoad in the middle of the night without fear
In short, I'm damn proud of our record on crime for the last 15 years. Now show me the map for LA and Washington, D.C. :) - macreator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14You're not serious are you? LA has a much higher crime rate than New York. NYC is the safest big city in America.
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I clicked on over a dozen of these links (in Manhattan) and every time the attacker was either latino/mexican or black. Tough to be 'color blind' seeing this...
And no, I don't care about being politically correct - just quoting the facts. - serpentor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13A drop in the value of NYC real estate? Not likely, ever. As far as crime goes, Gentrification is our friend.:) It's simple really, everything gets priced into the sky and the leftover ***** gets shipped off to Newark, NJ. When was the last time you saw someone get murdered at The Gap or Starbucks?
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This is actually the third time this was posted but eh...
Anyway the story here isn't really the Maps mash-up, but the internesting trends documented in the accompanying article. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/28/nyregion/28homicide.html
They look at all these NYC homicides and mine some interesting statistics. One is that if you live in NYC and don't spend time commiting crimes or with those that commit crimes, chances are pretty good that you will not get murdered. - danio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11there is alot near schools
- MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"That is so true. It's just a matter of staying out of bad people's business, and then praying that no one fires a stray."
Reminds me of the Reno 911 episode where the cops teach prospective gangbangers to shoot better to get rid of collateral damage. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'd like to see a map of all the muggings and robberies in NYC. But it would probably lock up my computer.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I think i saw most of these on Law & Order
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I was shocked how few murders there are in NY. I was lead to believe they had like 50 a day.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12isn't it obvious... google maps is racist!
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That is so true. It's just a matter of staying out of bad people's business, and then praying that no one fires a stray.
I live in the Bronx, so I should know. - hisjap2003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9wow, you can even click on a marker and learn all about the murder. that's morbidly cool.
- Tabasco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'd like to see L.A.
- kremvax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9For a city of 8 Million, this is an amazingly small number. Safer per capita than any major city in the country. And most small towns for that matter.
- chinolofus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8im not sure if you know about this site for chicago or not. you can put in addresses and intersections and get all the crime in a 2 week span. http://12.17.79.6/ctznicam/ctznicam.asp
- mikehorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I saw a bad fist fight on the nyc subway, ACE uptown local platform at 34th st. last night around 10pm. One guy's face was so bloody that everytime he got hit, blood would splatter on the white tiled wall. That's the first violence I've seen after living in nyc for 9 years.
- rzebram, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15How do we know he didn't just miss the 'N' without noticing? The keys are right next to each other. Besides, this isn't a particularly mature response.
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10My point would be that IF you get murdered in NY it's most likely going to be a black or latino/mexican male. I thought I made that clear. One 'might' keep these stats in mind when walking down a dark alley in NY one night...
- igutekunst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Editors' Note: The map may take several minutes to load."
- ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Check out the Bronx, it's shocking.
Not many in my neighborhood (southern Manhattan). - Qopax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9September 23, 2005
1473 Popham Ave
Victim 1: Black Male, 18
Victim 2: Black Female, 54
Suspect: Black Male, 50
Motive: Domestic
Method: Shooting
I wonder what happened there. - MrC539, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Good to know that none were near me.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So many homicides that FF crashed :P
..or mabye it commited suicide o.O - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6LOL, you rag on his stereotypes by pushing your stereotypes.
BANG UP JOB YOU'RE DOING THERE RETARD. - Wolfboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6through my work I examine a lot of murder cases. Most murders I see stem from disputes involving drug dealers (and similar criminal enterprises) or stem from disputes between husbands/boyfriends and their wives/girlfriends.
- DiscoLoke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7hey, someone should do this with chicago...
- tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No, I mean what's the point of pointing this out? It's natural that the poorest people in any given area will commit the most violent crimes. In most urban areas, those people are minorities. But I'll tell you what - if I'm walking down a deserted dark alley by myself, I'll be just as nervous if I see a white guy heading toward me as I would if I see a black guy.
- Wolfboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Gamekid: Your entry didn't make the front page because your headline and description weren't as good. And because you didn't have the word "Google" in them!
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's really interesting that Staten Island, home of the Wu-Tang Clan, is by far the least violent of the burroghs
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Because metaphorically lightning never strikes the spot twice.
- lawyernheart, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7closest one to me more than 10 blocks. Im also glad I decided not to move to park slope.
- kazem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Dude, Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothin' to f*** with. I think that people aren't killing each other in Staten Island out of fear of the Wu.
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It might not be a stretch; I recall a recent story of a site suing Google over a sudden change in page rank that cost them tons of business!
Not that I agree with such wacky litigious behavior. - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No, but if you notice a certain pattern, like a lot of folks getting capped around Battery Park, it probably says something.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Mr. Underbridge: That was Mind of Mencia, not Reno 911.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's exactly what it means. What are you confused by?
- ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yeah, it's pretty sad..
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow... there are so many in Brooklyn.
- tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dangerous, but they don't have the best aim...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, they should all shove each other into woodchippers to resolve their drug-related disputes!
- BlackHatFerret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow I thought Bronx would win but hey Go Brooklyn!
- MrGeneric, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6In the USA every year, more than 30,000 people are shot to death in murders, suicides, and accidents. Another 65,000 suffer from gun injuries.
That is a whole lot of pain, and it makes Iraq look no less safer than living in the USA. http://www.antiwar.com/casualties/ -
