- OneManArmy, on 03/05/2008, -0/+270“We use torrents ourselves, and we know that most NIN fans are tech-savvy and familiar with file-sharing, so we want to experiment with ways to use that to our advantage, instead of making the mistake of trying to fight or ignore it, as so many artists and labels do.” NIN’s Rob Sheridan added.
one word. AWESOME. - nekroskoma, on 03/05/2008, -2/+120you know what, i think im going to download this just to see if its any good
- frenchkick, on 03/05/2008, -1/+87im not a big fan of NIN
but what they are doing is awsome
so show the RIAA and other record labels that people actually do pay for music
GOOD MUSIC
rock on NIN - galanz, on 03/05/2008, -0/+86I paid my $5 but my download kept timing out then the link expired and they haven't responded to any of my E-Mails so Bit Torrent was the only way I could get what I paid for.
Regardless of any download problems I just wanted to show my support for what they're doing here. - inactive, on 03/05/2008, -1/+62NIN Supporting the community which supports NIN
- br0ken1128, on 03/05/2008, -0/+59Yes keep in mind that this work is not typical NIN work .. it's very experimental, at times it's very noisy and heavy and then at other times it's very ambient and almost relaxing .. experimental though, that's the word I think fits best.. I love it myself.
- p00pd0g, on 03/05/2008, -1/+47I'm really curious to see the stats on sales v. downloads...
The album is beyond belief btw...GO BUY/DOWNLOAD IT NOW - Daggity, on 03/05/2008, -0/+37This is actually really different from most of NiN's previous endeavors. I still like it, but it's much more ambient for the most part.
- TheCheat1989, on 03/05/2008, -1/+34same here.. never really heard their music but i think this will be a great test
- TOMCRUlSE, on 03/05/2008, -1/+34Keep in mind that Ghosts is all experimental and really not consistant with most NIN work. I mean, they've (one guy with a few helpers) been making music since the release of the first album in 1989, and the songs run the gamut from Synth-pop sounds to Super-abrasive industrial to solo piano. And it's interesting to see a 10-week production window, since Trent is notorious for taking years to work on an album. If you're new to NIN, download Ghosts, if you think it sucks -- go listen to Broken (1992) or The Downward Spiral (1994). If it's too heavy for you, listen to Pretty Hate Machine (1989) or even parts of The Fragile (1999). NIN has an amazingly diverse catalog and Trent and company have always been very smart both musically and in the industry.
- punkdemons, on 03/05/2008, -0/+31Buy Ghosts I-IV - Yes, It's THAT good
- inactive, on 03/05/2008, -9/+39dear Trent u rock , can I have an invite to what.cd and waffles? Thanx
- omghax, on 03/05/2008, -21/+49*dances*
- damndj, on 03/05/2008, -0/+27Trent isn't fighting with us. He has been a long time supporter of giving the listeners the power, not the greedy record companies. Trent is just making it easier for us.
- RevertTS, on 03/05/2008, -1/+27I paid the $5 for Niggy Tardust, probably buy this one on principle as well.
- borud, on 03/05/2008, -1/+24I bought the $75 package. Usually when I buy a CD I feel a bit dirty because I know that the artist probably won't see much of my money anyway. Buying a CD is usually to reward an industry that screws artists and customers alike.
I felt pretty good about buying Ghosts I-IV. I know a significant portion of the price will end up in Trent's pocket. Right Where It Belongs ;-).
You, Trent, know how to take care of your fans. Thanks! - Stradenko, on 03/05/2008, -1/+23Ghosts I-IV is licensed under the creative commons attribution.non-commercial-sharealike license. Sharing the album can hardly be called piracy.
- Jubilation43, on 03/05/2008, -0/+21I like knowing that NIN allows me to rip them off, it makes me want to pay them. Rather than feeling like a criminal and thinking "I should just take what I have and leave", knowing that he supports my decision to take /his/ music makes me feel like I owe him one, you know? Like a parter in crime.
btw ***** the RIAA. - BerryZilla, on 03/05/2008, -0/+20Trent has nothing to worry about. Most NIN fans including me usually buy all/most versions of the halos.
- damndj, on 03/05/2008, -2/+21There is no such thing as pirating this album.
- damndj, on 03/05/2008, -0/+19Well, Trent is doing the right thing by offering incentive to buy the higher priced items. I choked a little when I saw the deluxe box set at $300 but it sold out within a few hours. That's $750,000 right there in just a small amount of time.
I'd think this experiment is already a success for a random throwaway album (don't mistake throwaway for something bad.. it's very good).
What we're seeing here is a refinement of digital distribution. Good luck to all! - MrViklund, on 03/05/2008, -0/+18I have listened to Ghosts I 3 times now. Really great. I have heard allot about NIN over the years but never really cared to check out their music. But I can tell you this, I really liked Ghosts I, thanks!
- hexydes, on 03/05/2008, -0/+18I'm sorry, but I completely disagree. NIN is a job, and Trent & Co. need to make money. I think giving away 1/4 of the album in high-quality is more than fair, and the price of the full digital version of the album is EXTREMELY fair. I bought it without even listening to it, simply because this is what more bands need to do. I listened to it after I bought it, and it is decent (not my favorite of their work, but still decent), but the point is, I would MUCH prefer how they released this, as opposed to the latest American Idol winner or whatever.
- damndj, on 03/05/2008, -0/+17I'm already impressed that 2500 copies of the $300 deluxe set have been sold. I've bought the $75 one because I really want that Blu-Ray disc. I have a feeling this "experiment" is going to be a bigger success by a long shot than Niggytardust was.
- odiego, on 03/05/2008, -0/+15You know, I am not their biggest fan, but I really appreciate what they are doing.
I just got done listening to the album online, I liked it, and I am going to buy it. - inactive, on 03/05/2008, -0/+15They've already been sold out.
- hartley, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1510 to 1, through 30 to 1 is my guess.
They will still make more money than they did with pennies on the dollar from Interscope.
Theres no doubt in my mind either than all 2500 ultra deluxe editions will be sold as well. - Protoss, on 03/05/2008, -0/+14Well they are giving away part of the album, sort of a try-before-you-buy. That's a step right?
- PrismSub7, on 03/05/2008, -0/+13(Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I [2008/MP3/320]) (64.22 MB) uploaded by NIN was deleted (Rules broken: incomplete boxset, missing several discs. this disc not commercially released individually. superceded by full set)
Baaad trent ;) - briguymaine, on 03/05/2008, -0/+13well put. It's not typical NIN music but it's kind of cool just because it's a different delivery method. I paid the $5 just to support the idea, not because the music was great.
- ktetch, on 03/05/2008, -3/+15Lets put it this way - they've probably made as much profit already as they would have with a platinum sale the 'traditional' way
At the same time, they've kept control, and will make more over the next few weeks and months. - daggah, on 03/05/2008, -0/+12I pirate music almost on principle these days.
I bought the $10 download/preordered CDs. That was practically a purchase decision based on principle too. - TnTBass, on 03/05/2008, -0/+11I'm buying it just because I like what he is doing. I'm not a big fan of NIN myself. 5 dollars for all that is pretty cheap.
I think this article is focusing a little too much of the leakage. Yes, the torrent is up, and yes, people will leach. Would these people have bought the package anyways? Perhaps, perhaps not.
However, I think it speaks volumes that the 2500 limited edition copies are all sold out. - widgetmaker, on 03/05/2008, -0/+11They sold out in a matter of hours. Uploading on torrents also helps NIN save on bandwidth for free downloads form their own servers.
Album is also a lot better than you would expect for just instrumentals. - TedsGame, on 03/05/2008, -1/+11They are. And obviously quite smart. This is a good lesson for others.
- zerock, on 03/05/2008, -1/+11This is just a point in the right direction. All artists should replicate this. it would be cheaper (easier) for the consumer. And the artist make the money themselves
- dizturbd2, on 03/05/2008, -0/+10Rezner is a music and marketing GENIUS! I downloaded the free tunes, then went back to get the $10 package.
- borud, on 03/05/2008, -0/+10I thought the album was quite good, but then again, I have a thing for instrumental tracks and Trent Reznor's sound and the way he writes melodies. When I put it on my stereo while doing some chores around the house I found myself humming additional parts that I might want to record on keyboard or guitar. I might fiddle around with it even before the multitrack DVD arrives in may. (Should be easy really: just drag the entire track into Live and record additional parts).
I've also listened to the tracks at work. They are excellent background music while programming. - strictnein, on 03/05/2008, -3/+13Seriously? Better than Downward Sprial?
I bought Ghosts I-IV ($5 for 36 tracks, if you pirate that you suck) and I like it, but I wouldn't call it the best ever. - HillerMylife, on 07/24/2008, -0/+10I'm glad Digg commenter "spyrochaete" is educating us all with his extensive knowledge of the music industry from 1980 to now
- gnychis, on 03/05/2008, -0/+9i had this same issue of it timing out, if you run linux just copy the link to your clipboard and wget the link, it works instantly rather than trying to rely on the browser. So, once you get to that final link:
wget link
In fact, I hate to say it in fear I am ripping off the band... but it still works for me:
wget http://store.nin.com/sdl/nin_ghosts_I-IV_flac.zip - TnTBass, on 03/05/2008, -0/+9"Receipt for Your Payment to The Null Corporation"
LOL, awesome. - whiskeyclone, on 03/05/2008, -0/+9Yeah I get that - but it doesn't matter. Not everyone knows how to use bittorrent. If I didn't, I'd be out of pocket with nothing to show. Unless I repaid, and downloaded it later. Is that fair?
Plus, Trent made a big deal about choice of filetype and how the Radiohead scheme failed to offer choice. I paid, made my choice, and had to go to piratebay. What's the point? Why not just have a donation button and go download the torrent? That way I can support and have a stress free download.
And the comment below - yeah I know some people could reuse the links, but not if it timed out once you had started your download. My links, along with a host of other people's, lead to error messages telling me to contact support which I have, and I've heard nowt back. Is that how it should be?
The record industry should take note that this sort of thing has momentum - but this trial has been ***** *for me* from a consumer standpoint.
I've paid, I got ***** all.
It's going to put me off doing it again because I'll probably just torrent right off the bat to save the hastle. And I own at least 17 of the 24 halos. I'm a ***** huge NIN fan. I listen to Nails daily. My lastFM profile is built around NIN music. I bought (and enjoy) Niggy Tardust. Trent talked about taking care of fans at the Aussie gig - well as a die hard fan who wanted the album as soon as I heard about it, I've been screwed by NIN.com's own site. Where the johnny-come-latelys can get it just fine.
But I had to steal the album, even though I paid. Reading the torrent comments, looks like a lot of people needed to do the same.
That is failure. If this is going to work, it needs to have a decent management when things go wrong. Say I didn't know what bittorrent was (not everyone does) - Should I really still be waiting for my music, having paid 48 hours ago? - petemorley, on 03/05/2008, -0/+9I bet his Mother's penis is bigger than his.
- Xavious85, on 03/05/2008, -1/+10I loved that they had a torrent up. I paid the 5$ to download and tried to get it off the offical site but it was just so hammered, so I turned to pirate bay and got what I paid for very quickly and with a program that I have recently loved to use.
- monospaced, on 03/05/2008, -0/+9But it IS kinda typical! Listen to some of his old records like Broken, and parts of Pretty Hate Machine, and you'll hear a sea of similarities. Ghosts may be instrumental, but it's NIN through and through.
- pianomahnn, on 03/05/2008, -0/+8Whose hand is he biting? It's certainly not ours. Are you possibly referring to the recording industry, the same corrupted industry to which he is no longer a slave?
- i4mt3hwin, on 03/05/2008, -1/+9I bought it. $5.. woopdeedo.. i spend more then that driving to Staten Island every morning. Its pretty decent music, I wouldn't say it's great, but for $5 whatever.
- whiskeyclone, on 03/05/2008, -3/+11Same boat. Paid for the album, got my one time download link. Clicked it - selected FLAC lossless. Starteed download. Timeout after 7%. Left out of pocket with no music.
Piratebay got me the full album in mp3 - but 3 emails and 48 hours later I'm still without what I paid for from NIN.com which is really *****.
If it wasn't for Piratebay, I think a lot of people in our position would be quite rightly pissed off.
Honestly, the online distribution method NIN.com set up is a failure simple because there are people like ourselves that paid and have nothing to show for it. And in spite of doing everything right as far as supporting the artist blah blah blah I still had to rely on the piracy model to actually get something similar to what I paid for. The retail equivalent of this is having people buy the CD just fine, but when the queue gets long, taking people's money and telling them "it's in the post" - whilst people who turn up later get to CD there and then.
Personally I'm torn between thinking "Wow it was such a success it exceeded expectations and took the servers down!" and "I've paid; where the ***** is my download?". - damndj, on 03/05/2008, -0/+8What choice did he have? And no, it's not exactly the same as Trent suing.
