- metalica77, on 10/11/2007, -1/+230Holy ***** I thought i heard everything. I guess I was wrong
- Gadren, on 10/11/2007, -3/+180"Honey, I'm home... sigh..."
"What is it, dear?"
"I - I got fired from the nacho plant. They say that those downloaders are lowering the number of people who buy nachos at theaters..."
"B-b-b-but Daddy, how will we pay for my operation?"
"I don't know, Billy... I don't know..."
WHEN YOU DOWNLOAD A MOVIE, YOU'RE RUINING LIVES. - secretwhistle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+112City kids with their technologies and internets are destroying the poor, gentle folks of the soil.
That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. - AmishRefugee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+111P2P is also robbing gas companies, who'se gonna drive to a movie theater if they can just download the movies. Those downloaders should be ashamed of themselves.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+76P2P helps ISPs, poor owners of torrent trackers, poor open source programmers, is starting a revolution of free content, stress tests network hardware, makes RIAA/MPAA say jokes, last but not least makes me happy.
Maybe the poor corn farmers (if there is such a thing) if they are so adamant to stay on with corn production, should lobby to R&D on alternative fuel automobiles that can use corn as the base.. If they need sigs for petitions, post it here... I'd bet that would garner support in the 100s of thousands if not millions. - eatkitten, on 10/11/2007, -0/+64I think they might possibly survive the great popcorn famine with them there ethanols runnin all the motors.
- fober, on 10/11/2007, -0/+64Next Week:
"Broom manufacturers blame P2P for lost revenue from lack of popcorn that needs to be swept from the floors of nearly empty movie theaters." - barnis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+63not to mention the aluminum miners of Arkansas..used for DVD-Rs
http://www.state.ar.us/agc/aluminum.htm - unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -4/+59i call BS, they can sell their corn for much more now due to the fact that it can be made into ethanol
- DangerMouse9, on 10/11/2007, -1/+47I don't know about the rest of you, but while watching a movie I pirated I have a huge bowl of popcorn, a plate of nachos, a 2-Liter of Coke, and a large sundae.
So, the money I didn't spend at the theater instead went to the local farmer's market.
I really love how these "experts" think the money not spent on the theater just suddenly disappears into a black hole and isn't spent elsewhere in the economy. - earls, on 10/11/2007, -0/+42Yeah, and I bet they'd SELL MORE if it weren't $8.00 for a small.
- ThinkBox, on 10/11/2007, -1/+43yeah, and when is the last time you saw something to drink without HighFructoseCornSyrup? Corn is in TONS of stuff. TONS. And I dont buy popcorn at the theater and never have, its 10 bucks for parking 11 for a movie and then 10 for popcorn and a coke? And fantastic four is supposed to be worth 30 bucks?
- musters, on 10/11/2007, -0/+41This is the first news I've heard that people DO NOT eat popcorn at home. I never realized the only place people eat popcorn was at the movie theatre.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+36Isn't corn the most heavily subsidized farm industry in the country? Why the hell should I care about their profits? (other than the fact that my tax dollars will bail them out)
- Artifez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+35This country needs to eat less corn, corn syrup is in everything and it isn't all that great for you anyhow.
- qualish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30Working at a nacho plant has been my dream job for years. One can dream... one can dream...
/wipes tear from eye - NanoStuff, on 10/11/2007, -4/+34That's nothing, P2P raped my sister and killed my dog.
- Dradis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27I'm actually really concerned for the movie popcorn machine manufacturers. Corn has other markets, but movie popcorn machine manufacturers are the ones who will really be hurting.
- schnikies79, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25Haha, my family grows feed corn and popcorn (along with soybeans). We have made more money in the last few years than we ever have.
To an above comment. You sell corn by the bushel, not the pound. - CaptMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -4/+24I won't agree that popcorn sales are hurting farmers (last I checked popcorn was a tiny portion of the nation's corn crop). However, the corporate farm stuff is nonsense. Less than 2% of the US's farms are owned by corporations. And even though those corporate farms are much larger than the family-owned ones, they only produce 14% of the US's crops.
http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/EIB12/EIB12c.pdf? - Markers, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20That's *****... I went to the movies last night and refused to purchase popcorn and candy because I had to take out a personal loan just to pay for it. Lower your price, bitches.
- neoneddy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20corn prices are up because of ethanol, don't get me started.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18What about the guys that make Junior Mints? Now that's a movie snack!
- sfacets, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21What the hell?
- KnightMareInc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17or charging 20 bucks for a bucket of pop corn is making them poor
- bwzippy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16I'm a farmer. The money I save downloading movies instead of going to the theatre allowed me to get a shiny new John Deere tractor. TYVM. In ur fields, stealin ur ethanol.
- furrot, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18The entire corn Lobby can go f**k itself. Without a doubt there's an organization that has screwed up the quality of our food and started the biggest fuel screwup in history, ethanol.
- dweeb79, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15If anything the popcorn only helps the theatre owners because they make the money on popcorn that costs 9 dollars while the farmer only makes a dollar a pound (just throwing out BS numbers to prove a point). Lets say the corn farmer starts selling less to the movie theatre eventually all that will happen is the corn will be distributed somewhere else or burned since our government loves to give farmers money. In the end the only person the popcorn sales hurt is the theatre because they make their money on the concession stand.
- Rossimo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16When the local movie theater where I live charges $10 for a medium popcorn and drink, these corn farmers should be making a f*cking killing.
- cquinnd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14That is a different type of corn. But the story is still bogus, because while I have seen few movies in the theater in recent years, I still buy microwave popcorn for movie nights at home.
- trer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Actually, movie theatres that charge $8 for a medium size popcorn are robbing poor corn farmers because they are not passing a portion of their insane profit margin to them.
- wildchild77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13LOL WOW. I never buy popcorn at the theaters because of how overpriced it is. However, I do buy popcorn, soda, and snacks for consumption at home when I watch downloaded movies.
- cloudyprison, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Not as shocking as "P2P Says that Poor Corn Farmers are Robbing NBC."
- chrysrobyn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15I'm hurting corn farmers. Personally.
The wife and I have all but stopped buying corn. We don't get popcorn at the theater (when we go) and we strive to stay away from high fructose corn syrup. Genetically modificed crops scare me.
Forget the torrents. It's educated consumers driving down demand. - cheztir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Hmm what are we going to do with all of that left over cor---:cuts to image of me filling my car with ethanol: Ah thats where. Corn producers aren't hurting at all. I'm sure theyre happy not having to give over more corn to popcorn usage, it can now go towards massive government subsidies for ethanol. Pff hurt corn farmers...
- locnguyen, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Because NBC cares so much for people who farm for a living.
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Popcorn costs more than it's weight in gold. Too bad the corn farmers don't get anything from the inflated price. Not to mention the price is the number one factor popcorn isn't going to be purchased in a movie theater. Hell I have friends who don't even buy fountain drinks any more at a restaurant because they don't want to pay 2 dollars on top of the cost of food. The price will kill it every time.
- silicon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12How about they sell the popcorn closer to what it's actually worth, then we can talk again...
- trer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Whatever happened to service for the customer? It seems nowadays the movie and music industry is taking a liking to bashing its own customers for its own business failings. Newsflash to MPAA and RIAA, you DON'T exist WITHOUT US. Instead of badmouthing, suing, and blaming customers for their perceived ills, why don't they work harder on putting out a better product?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12What?
The price of corn is way up, even though it has a federal subsidy.
The high price of corn has affected beef in a huge way and even tequila. I feel zero pain for the corn farmers. - cquinnd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10It was a bad example... By the same logic Uwe Boll has cost popcorn farmers much more by churning out crappy movies that even the P2P community refuses to share, much less go to the theater to see.
- 1773nium, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11YOU'RE ALSO SUPPORTING TERRORISM!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10on the other hand, if people eat less sweet popcorn they don't get fat. if they eat less salty popcord they don't get heart disease. P2P is clearly healthier for America.
- Anrkist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9They already are.. it's called Ethanol.
- TennisElbow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I don't go to movie theaters anymore because the experience is lousy. Kids on cell phones talking through the whole movie, and 45 minutes of commercials before the movie even starts. Yeah, movie studios, I'm really gonna pay $10 to watch commercials. It has nothing to do with piracy, and everything to do with the fact that if you're over 15, you don't want to be at a movie theater on Friday or Saturday nights during the school year. (And never during the summer.)
- drlha, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8You mean, they'll be able to survive based on all the government hand outs they get for growing corn for reason X.
- iNoles, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Buried.. marked as inaccurate
- cramd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Well I will be sure to pop a fresh batch before I sit down in front of my Modded xbox and watch my downloaded movies. Boy will that make me feel great, knowing that I am helping the poor corn farmers, and still sticking it to the MPAA.
- WhiteIce89, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Corn farmers of all types are raking in huge profits from ethanol demand. The only ones who might "suffer" are movie theaters, but they'll probably just burden their customers with increased popcorn prices to make up for high corn prices.
