- PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Isn't that entrapment though?
A police officer masquerading as anything other than a police officer in order to catch a criminal is walking a very fine line in the eyes of the law.
And I think that applies even if he is catching paedophiles. - schwit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Good. Keep the predators off the street.
2nd offense should be life without parole. - cpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There was never a kid involved, so where is the crime?
14 is legal in some states so if I'm at my computer chatting with a girl, do I then have to start checking state laws in the state she "says" she is from?
Oh yeah, and why is it every time someone tries to have a mature conversation about this they always start screaming about "***** animals, kill em' all, Rip off their balls" -- seems like a case of "thou doth protest too much" to me. - browncarpet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You know I never thought that a thing like this could happen on a site were young, teenage girls post pictures of themselves in *sexy* positions and say how horny that are and say where they live and their phone numbers and email address and any other possible method of communication so child predators can access them.
I just didn't think this could happen on MySpace.... - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The thing I'm actually curious about is, how many underage kids are actually out there ACCEPTING these types of invitations? What kind of 14 year old girl wants to have sex with a ugly, fat, hairy 50 year old guy?"
Sounds like you should be Dateline's producer. Do it the other way around, and then expose them to their parents. That would make for some priceless TV. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3also, when did little girls become whores? seriously, have you seen the new bratz dolls they show os TV everywhere? JESUS CHRIST, what are they telling little girls to dress up like this for?!
- Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4PaulOwen: "A police officer masquerading as anything other than a police officer in order to catch a criminal is walking a very fine line in the eyes of the law."
Please don't embarass yourself - this is absolutely not entrapment and it's not walking any "fine line." The cops do it all the time, and everyone with kids thanks them. You should too. - AgentM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I saw the NBC special too, personally, I would get a kick out of watching the reverse of what they did. Have the investigative team pose as a "predator" or whatever term you want to use, then show the stupid underage girl or guy show up for a meeting.
Some kids need to be taught better than to meet up with someone 15+ years older than them for sex. I can see that as being part of the problem here... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As the Dateline stories will show, there are an unthinkable amount of men out there willing to risk exposure for the chance at sex with an underage girl or boy. This is something we all know, yet probably don't want to think about. Even guys that normally would never even dream of soliciting online would probably have trouble saying 'no' to a girl under the age of 18 if the opportunity arose. Of course, some cultures don't even see a problem with this.
The thing I'm actually curious about is, how many underage kids are actually out there ACCEPTING these types of invitations? What kind of 14 year old girl wants to have sex with a ugly, fat, hairy 50 year old guy? - m.sandstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah I also saw the Dateline special. They did another one not too long ago and its utterly amazing how incredibly stupid these guys can be. Dumbest one: While the cops (about 6) are out front of the house arresting one of the previous offenders this guy drives past, sees the cops arresting this guy and then comes back to the house to get with the "kid." And to top it all off he admitted that he saw the original Dateline special on tv before coming there. I couldn't stop laughing!
(-_-) Thank god these guys are getting put away. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Besides, why would you worry about entrapment unless you are doing something illegal? ^^ People are freakin PARANOID....
because it is the job of the citizens to make sure ALL liberties and civil rights are held up, and not just look the other way because children are involved, what if the accused is innocent, then that person's world crumbles over a lie and they can never recover from it. ever think of that? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The thing I'm actually curious about is, how many underage kids are actually out there ACCEPTING these types of invitations? The kind with lots of money to feed their expensive, greedy tastes, it's actually very simple when you think about it - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've got no pitty for these animals. The damage they do not only to a child, but to the subsequent generations that flow from that child are horriffic. There should be 0 tollerance .... automatic life without parole for anyone convicted of crimes of this nature.
- PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually it wasn't entrapment - just found out why:

AMEN - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's it, she is off my friends list.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Devil's advocate here...isn't this entrapment, and thusly illegal? Just want to know, or are there special laws JUST because kids are the supposed targets? seems like a double standard to me, why not just target ALL crminals in this manner?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"No offence but you sound like your a paedo"
heh, I knew someone was gonna say that, just so typical - edmcguirk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Waste of money and manpower because it was just a publicity stunt.
A cop goes on the internet and goes right to the edge of entrapment so they can make a bust and make some headlines.
Did they make any real dent in pedophilia? No.
But who cares, they got headlines, TV stories, and Digg articles. Yay! We made a difference in the world!
Spend that kind of money on protecting real victims and I'd be happy. Oh wait, nobody gets headlines for real police work. - rmdl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry, didn't elaborate on my post..
Reason this is a fine line with entrapment is because there was never any 13 year old girl. She never existed.
Now, had they took an actual girl and made her part of the sting... that's one thing, but when no actual crime has been committed and it was a "what if" situation then that's complete *****.
If it was something else, people would be up in arms, but because it's "for the kids" it's okay. This type of mentality is dangerous, believe it or not. "It's not okay otherwise but.. in this case it is.." - SFBay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Guess what guys, I've had sex with a 14 year old. I was 15. Guess I'm a sick pedophile you're all going to castrate, huh?
Nothing like a bunch of self-righteous puritans casting stones. Right now it's "protect the children!" but you could buy hard core child porn in america just 30 years ago. Before that it was homosexuality that was evil evil evil. Oh, and let's not forget masturbation, which is also evil, right, you self-appointed guardians of the moral order?
Who gives a ***** about a 13 year old who chooses to have sex. It's her ***** choice and if she doesn't like it she shouldn't choose to do it again. I am sick and tired of this moral panic that anyone under 18 is absolutely unable to make any decisions for themselves at all. And it's even more sickening to see the howls for blood here and everywhere else.
You know, I don't know a single guy who would honestly say he wouldn't have sex with a hot 16 year old if he could get away with it. And ***** all you liars who will now insist you wouldn't. - Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dcjoedog: "entrapment is when the cop gives the idea to the accused, while the accused never brought it up or even hinted at it."
Not at all. A child could get on her knees and beg an adult of have sex with her - it would still be child molestation and punishable as such. What the link you gave says in that a cop cannot INDUCE the person; i.e., physically force the person to say "yes." - BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1True for all, castration is the only way.
Any one of these diseased minded freaks comes near my daughter, then I will castrate them myself, Pulp Fiction style...
And for all you asses saying "wah wah, shutdown Myspace", are you for real? This has been going on since the internet was born, it is not MySpace, it is called "grooming" do you never watch TV?
They did several stings on ABC in Houston too, for a 13 year old girl, all sorts of pervs turning up, 40+ year old DOCTORS and DENTISTS, ***** animals... - SFBay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Who knows? Almost every man alive is a "pedophile", if only within the confines of his own mind.
Hell, Thomas Jefferson had sexual relations with one of his slave girls - she was 14. That's the author of your Declaration of Independence, I'm sure it was covered in school. What a sick pedophile! I'm sure he would have been cast into jail these days, and rightfully so! Who needs a declaration of independence anyway? PROTECT THE CHILDREN!!!!! - 71b3r1u2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just in case you wanted to know what a dork like this guy's profile looks like, here it is:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=49959081 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^^
I think it should be, Couldn't a 18 yr old get in trouble as well, or couldn't the guy be someone that solicits minors to call their parents so something doesnt happen to the girl in the future. I see that parents have no responibility anymore. Its simple WATCH YOUR KID! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"dcjoedog - I've spoken with you enough. I think you are severely confused, and I'll leave it at that."
I can respect that, at least you didn't break down into just shouting everything you said, I'm not confused, just curious is all, nothing wrong with that. - PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ccanni1028 you're misinformed - the the US entrapment depends on the accused' motives.
- bnl771, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1seldatx - That's a wonderfully insightful comment. It's also the dumbest thing you could have said. There's NO reason to shutdown MySpace... Why not just shut down the whole internet? MySpace is intended for people 16 and up and if someone lies to get in, well... sorry... Parents should control their kids internet use. It's hip to attack MySpace, but there's thousands and thousands of other places these things can happen. Think before you say something - you'll realize you probably don't need to be saying it.
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PaulOwen- "A police officer masquerading as anything other than a police officer in order to catch a criminal is walking a very fine line in the eyes of the law."
Haven't you ever heard of undercover officers infiltrating drug rings then killing them from the inside? - Craig1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why don't the hackers go after these pricks that pretend to be girls and drive them off of Myspace? *****' low-life pieces of excrement.
- Testify.Alex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good i hope everyone that uses myspace would just fall off the face of the fukin earth
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Schmitty
"Besides, why would you worry about entrapment unless you are doing something illegal? ^^ People are freakin PARANOID...."
Why care if the government comes in and rapes anyone they say is a criminal then kills them and eats their brains, that is unless you are a criminal?
move to China, sounds like you would fit right in - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, I must say... it sounds like the digg community finnaly grew up a little..... i clicked the comments link expecting to see 50+ posts of 'MYSPACE KILLS!!!! DOWN WITH MYSPACE!!!' but I didnt... theres actually real comments...
Personally... i dont like myspace... every page on there is eye-torture LOOK AT HOW MANY COLORS I CAN USE!!!! or the typical... 1000+ pictures on 1 page... etc.....
But anyway... The simple fact is... myspace doesnt kill, or get girls raped.... aim doesnt, chatrooms dont.... its parents not raising their kids properly... if you use the internet, or tv as your babysitter.... you damn well better expect issues.... - xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha, i guess AOL chatrooms are so passe
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"why is everyone complaining about whether this is entrapment or not? who ***** cares, another pervert off the streets. it's like you're sticking up for them."
Because it does no good to catch then if they can get off on a technicality, We want them put away for good, and not just for a weekend in holding. We are not rooting for them, we just want things to be done according to the law, you know, like a GOOD citizend does. - dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 But seriously PaulOwen had a valid concerns.
A person can question the methods used in this situation or other similar ones (undercover cops after drugs) and still be a good guy. Questioning them doesn't mean you are a pedophile or drug addict.
If it was deemed to be entrapment then the pedophile walks, then it's your fault he is free. That would be a huge waste of time and resources with nothing done. Kids would still be in danger. Do it right the first time, that's what the law and rules are for.
The Slate link above listed three points of what the definition of entrapment is in some States in the United States:
1. The idea of committing the crime came from law enforcement officers, rather than the defendant.
2. The law enforcement officers induced the person to commit the crime. Courts have traditionally maintained a high burden of proof for inducement. Simply affording the defendant the opportunity to commit the crime does not constitute inducement. For inducement to be proved, officers must have used coercive or persuasive tactics.
3. The defendant was not ready and willing to commit this type of crime before being induced to do so. If an undercover cop bought cocaine from a person carrying a kilogram of the drug, the seller could not plead entrapment, even if coercion were involved in the sale, since his intent to sell was clear. Most courts also allow a defendant's predisposition to be demonstrated through prior conduct or reputation.
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Good. Keep the predators off the street."
I dunno, entrapment never seems like the best way to prevent crime.
Does snag a lot of stupid people, of course... - ajlobato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay, let's school some of you on law, shall we?
Entrapment would be:
I'm a cop, I am dressed as a thug. I say you need to buy drugs or I'll shoot you, you buy the drugs, then I bust you for buying drugs.
Entrapment IS NOT:
I'm a cop, I act as a drug dealer. I offer a MEANS for you to break the law (buy drugs), and you CHOOSE to break the law via the MEANS I offer (you buy my drugs). You could of walked away, you didn't, you're busted.
Acting like you are 14 on line is not illegal. The cop can even go so far as to say "You want to come over and have sex?" and it is NOT entrapment. He is offering.
If the cop would have said "Come over and sex0r me or I'll kill you in your sleep with this new address you gave me.", that would be entrapment. ((Note, don't confuse that with a real 14 year old girl. If a real 14 year old girl were to say that, and you did it go over, kiss your ass goodbye. If a cop says that, and you say "okay!"...))
Anyone who ***** bitches is full of *****. Obey the ***** law.
And before anyone brings it up, in most states, it doesn't matter if the other person really IS 14 or not. The law STATES that you have to believe that it is a 14 year old. It's intent that the law is covering, not actions.
And no, I'm not a lawyer, I'm edumacatedz0r.
Now shut up and Digg other stuff. - BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anothergene - your idea's excellent! It's time we make castration the official punishment for perverts and sex offenders.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"haha, i guess AOL chatrooms are so passe"
Actually, I'm surprised that most predators are NOT using AOL to solicit minors. Anyone stupid enough to use AOL is already showing how naive they are in the first place. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Isn't that entrapment though?"
It's entrapment when the undercover cop initiates the deal. However in this case, the ***** pedophile is the one arranging the meet. Cops know better.
~mario - gronne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone got a link to her profile?
- olegk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It will be pretty hard to convict them. And here's why:
ENTRAPMENT - A person is 'entrapped' when he is induced or persuaded by law enforcement officers or their agents to commit a crime that he had no previous intent to commit; and the law as a matter of policy forbids conviction in such a case.
However, there is no entrapment where a person is ready and willing to break the law and the Government agents merely provide what appears to be a favorable opportunity for the person to commit the crime. For example, it is not entrapment for a Government agent to pretend to be someone else and to offer, either directly or through an informer or other decoy, to engage in an unlawful transaction with the person. So, a person would not be a victim of entrapment if the person was ready, willing and able to commit the crime charged in the indictment whenever opportunity was afforded, and that Government officers or their agents did no more than offer an opportunity. - jon419, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+digg for a local news story.
Wonder if Alex has talked to this girl.... - afpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Hmm, this is interesting "Bond for Woodman was set at $100,000. If he is released, he has been ordered not to have contact with anyone under the age of 16 or USE THE INTERNET. " Computing would be boring."
The funny thing is, he didn't have contact with anyone under the age of 16 at any point of this anyway... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"You know, I don't know a single guy who would honestly say he wouldn't have sex with a hot 16 year old if he could get away with it. ......................................~dave chappelle as TRON - RichMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What a bitch. . I don't care how old people are when searching to connect with another person using the internet. I would hate it if I were expecting to meet a 21-year old girl (for example), then meet up with somebody that is not who they say they are ..
My opinion on this case though. 32 is kinda old to going after 14 y/o's, not entirely wrong by my beliefs (he isn't practicing pedophilia, he's a ephebophile. . google it), but come on now I can understand a teenage girl falling in love with a guy who's 18-21, or possibly a bit more, but nobody really in their right mind would choose a mate about 2x their own age. Unless we're living in the past and the said 32y/o male was in nobility and wealth. . Which that obviously isn't the case. -
