Myspace Still Kicking Facebook's Ass in Traffic
readwriteweb.com — While the media and Silicon Valley have lost our collective minds over the rise of Facebook over the past year, traffic analysts Hitwise released numbers today indicating that things are not as they might seem.
- 812 diggs

- atdigg, on 01/17/2008, -7/+77Very good, some people should remain there.
- arplayer2k, on 01/18/2008, -2/+1Its all those bro ho's. Let them have facebook, with their collaborative IQ of 10.
- arplayer2k, on 01/18/2008, -2/+1I'm an idiot to myself. I meant the bro ho's can stay on Myspace.
- KingGorilla, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I wish it was only for college students still.
- arplayer2k, on 01/18/2008, -2/+1Its all those bro ho's. Let them have facebook, with their collaborative IQ of 10.
- jonester, on 01/17/2008, -4/+132Duh, people love profiles that look like blind retarded children made them.
- Chirp08, on 01/17/2008, -8/+2So is there like a site I can go to where I can get these templates...?
- minnymoo, on 01/17/2008, -9/+3yeah, www.lamefaceplatesfor12yearolds.com

- blackdude, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6Your average myspace user:
TyPeZ LyKe DiS CuZ iTs CoOl ZoMg
Your average facebook user:
I didn't know you went to school, wore blue jeans, nike shoes, chilled with your girlfreind, ate at home, checked your email, bit a chomp out of me, changed your status, shut off your computer, was currently active, and rode a yellow bus today! NEAT!- chapium, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1That reminds me of Xanga a few years back.
- Dustmuffins, on 01/18/2008, -2/+1Ultimate myspace profile theme: http://www.myspace.com/dustmuffins
- Chirp08, on 01/17/2008, -8/+2So is there like a site I can go to where I can get these templates...?
- xdvx, on 01/17/2008, -21/+6Myspace in huge lead
- unusualbob, on 01/17/2008, -5/+54Of course you also have to realize that a decent portion of that is probably the spammers that send users bikini-clad porn site invites. I finally canceled my account after logging in and finding 50+ requests from spammers.
- marshallk, on 01/17/2008, -4/+15MySpace actually put in spam control a few months ago and I've been getting a whole lot less of it since then.
- jamesov89, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I would rather have none.
- bullcutter, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1a little-known secret about myspace is that the spammers only attack regular user accounts. if you make a movie, film or comedy account (even if you don't post any material), the spammers tend to leave you be. i have a musician account and i don't think i've ever had one Spambot friend request.
- jcaino, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2i too logged in today to see about 5 of my friends got phished/hacked/whatever, saw a ton of spam requests, posts, etc.
canceled my account right then and there. - exomni, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5I have 300+ "application" requests on Facebook.
- giveer, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I stopped clicking the myriad of app Ignore buttons too - and I now love my single "X number of other requests" line. Takes up 1% of the space and I never have to see another app request ever.
- marshallk, on 01/17/2008, -4/+15MySpace actually put in spam control a few months ago and I've been getting a whole lot less of it since then.
- NICU, on 01/17/2008, -9/+22Unfair test - you can't filter out the massive child predator and general-creepy-basement-dweller traffic that makes up most of what MySpace gets every day.
- SuperWinner, on 01/17/2008, -7/+1The funny thing about NAMBLA is you can work it into almost sentence and sound intelligent, because people have no idea what it really is.
- HigherLogic, on 01/18/2008, -1/+3Traffic is traffic is traffic. That, and the demographic of Digg is more likely a FB user than a MySpace user (or not one at all). It's all about the LCD, the "average" person, which most users on here do not relate with (e.g. music, technology, etc.) or understand. For example, Linux on here isn't even a blip on the radar for your average person. Same goes with politics and a lot of other things. Though it's nice to think others are noticing this kind of stuff, they really aren't.
- facereplacer, on 01/17/2008, -7/+5Myspace is obviously getting introspective. The sad part is that the only way they know how to compete is to copy exactly what Facebook does... just like they did with friendster.
- whathappened, on 01/17/2008, -13/+30I closed my myspace account when i joined facebook. anyone else?
- Chirp08, on 01/17/2008, -2/+5Had to wait for all my friends to get into college first, that was before they made it open to everyone
- voodoochild461, on 01/17/2008, -2/+1yeah
- SoCalMario, on 01/18/2008, -4/+1No ! Facebook sucks balls!
- marik297, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I did.
- Syphon8, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I never had a MySpace account. *cool*
- hamidrezan, on 01/17/2008, -13/+2Facebook is more web2 than myspace.
- insanebrain, on 01/18/2008, -4/+1web2. .. ??? o .. yeah . . you mean that mass-induced commercial phrase without any from real content. GREAT !!!

- xsquirrel378x, on 01/17/2008, -15/+13some hackers posted gay sex pictures all over my myspace profile, my girlfriend left me because she thought i was cheating on her with other guys, ive had 14 different passwords and they got all of em.

- BornLegend, on 01/18/2008, -1/+0Hahaha, you're a great comedian.
- exomni, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4Those must have been hackers on steroids, invading your myspace account and disrupting innocent people's lives like that.
- MASTERPL, on 01/17/2008, -8/+5Before you buy into the hype read this from the Wikipedia article about the company providing the stats:
The Hitwise product is a commercial platform whereby customers pay Hitwise a premium to access data reports for their vertical. A common use of Hitwise is to measure market share on the internet.
Hitwise is of unique value to internet marketers because its data about web traffic and keyword search volumes comes directly from internet service providers. As such, the data represents a broader sample of total web browsing trends than other similar ranking sources that rely upon a panel of users who have opted to install a free browser toolbar or other monitoring software running on their local computer.
Can we say Biased?- marshallk, on 01/17/2008, -0/+10how is that more biased than any other traffic data source? that's how it works
- bandergrove, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2This tells us the statistics for users who are willing to install an extra taskbar on their browser.
I'd say MySpace users would be much more likely to install a taskbar, because they tolerate tons of flashy, unnecessary flash apps and other garbage on Myspace. Facebook users, on the other hand, prefer a more clean / controlled / uniform look, and don't want all the "bling."
- postalblowfish7, on 01/17/2008, -6/+7two heads of the same retarded self-obsessed social network ogre.
- KraftDinner101, on 01/17/2008, -3/+20You had me at the words "Ass Traffic"
- Syphon8, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Munroe's Law.
- KingGorilla, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I'll take Anal Bum Covers for $100 Alex! Hahaha!
- amirman, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1what a golden phrase. i have to work "ass traffic" into a conversation sometime.
- lukas88, on 01/17/2008, -7/+6Both sites are a great way to maintain those superficial relationships that people think they need.
- Daiken, on 01/18/2008, -1/+1I feel sorry for the person who feels relationships are something that people don't need. Sure, a lot of Facebook users have "superficial" relationships with the hundreds of people they add, but there are also others who rely on it to stay in touch with friends who live far away. Personally, I don't add anyone to my friend's list unless I'm good friends with them, but the majority of users seem to just add anyone they know. Especially a lot of kids in school who see it as a popularity contest. But if that's what they want to do with their account, that's up to them. You can't categorize everyone as having superficial relationships through the site though.
- Testiculese, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2True, but when 75% of the site is superficial relationships, what he says stands. (I have 10 friends (all RL) on myspace)

- sfacets, on 01/17/2008, -11/+6Are you serious? What kind of lame ass uses Myspace?
- xsquirrel378x, on 01/17/2008, -7/+8lol what kind of lame ass uses facebook, they both suck *****
- shady1630, on 01/17/2008, -7/+4People with friends.
- xsquirrel378x, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3BAWWWWWW
- shady1630, on 01/17/2008, -7/+4People with friends.
- xsquirrel378x, on 01/17/2008, -7/+8lol what kind of lame ass uses facebook, they both suck *****
- cerealjynx, on 01/17/2008, -6/+4Here's why. They are social circle sites.
And 16 year olds have much wider, and more frivolous circles than the college student on the social network boat.- Daiken, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I sorta agree but to a certain extent both age groups have frivolous circles. 16 year olds just add everyone to their friend's list. College students add everyone to their friend's list that they actually know.
- Rikushix, on 01/17/2008, -7/+6I don't mind this at all; the longer Myspace stays "mainstream" and Facebook "the alternative", the better, in my opinion. I mean, this is Digg, we have to have alternatives :D
- vapblack, on 01/18/2008, -2/+9Digg = Myspace
Slashdot = Facebook
Amen? - paOol, on 01/18/2008, -4/+2ps3 = myspace
wii/xbox = facebook- marik297, on 01/18/2008, -4/+3360= myspace
wii/ps3= facebook
Fixed.- marik297, on 01/18/2008, -3/+2Actually even better comparison
PS3=virb
360=Facebook
Wii=myspace - Syphon8, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3Except Wii isn't *****.
- marik297, on 01/18/2008, -3/+2Actually even better comparison
- marik297, on 01/18/2008, -4/+3360= myspace
- vapblack, on 01/18/2008, -2/+9Digg = Myspace
- GhostWithToast, on 01/17/2008, -1/+22And American Idol is still a top rated show. 'Bout sums it up.
- DeskFlyer, on 01/17/2008, -5/+44MySpace still kicking Facebook's ass in supreme suckage too.
- exomni, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2Facebook is doing its best to catch up in that department.
- avions, on 01/17/2008, -8/+35Quality > Quantity
Facebook > MySpace - debuffplx, on 01/17/2008, -8/+5I only use myspace for indie bands that promote there. I stay away from facebook b/c only dickheads and assfunnels use it.
- Dumbledore, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2What the hell is an assfunnel?
- exomni, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2It can either be a sex toy used to collect multiple guy's sperm into the anal cavity (to be sucked out later), or one whose asshole is so big he funnels everything into his ass.
- Dumbledore, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2What the hell is an assfunnel?
- Amelielove, on 01/17/2008, -6/+1whatever
- SilentSpyder, on 01/17/2008, -10/+18I have both but I hate Facebook.
- Orb9, on 01/18/2008, -3/+11All 14 year olds do.
- SilentSpyder, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1try 27
- Orb9, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1Once the fad permeates its hip to care, hip to hate it.
- Ender008, on 01/18/2008, -3/+4I have both and hate both of them. It's a shame that so much social interaction (mostly just keeping up with old friends) relies on them.
- Orb9, on 01/18/2008, -3/+11All 14 year olds do.
- wukillabee, on 01/17/2008, -9/+1Myspace > Facebook
real talk - cl2yp71c, on 01/17/2008, -0/+9Bots, whores, Tom.
- FoxFaction, on 01/17/2008, -0/+6And he was all like punching him in the face, and Facebook was all like "stop it" and Myspace was just really drunk and wouldn't leave him alone.
/ I guess though according to the new video, Facebook is a girl - kp606, on 01/17/2008, -8/+11Too bad Facebook is kicking MySpace's ass in everything else.
- Metatron197, on 01/17/2008, -6/+8apparently, myspace kicks ass, and facebook takes it in the ass
- Lyght, on 01/18/2008, -1/+3Just because it has more users does not make it a higher quality site. The only reason I still have one is because only about 33% of my friends have Facebook, and the rest haven't moved over to Facebook.
- wedges, on 01/17/2008, -10/+6Let's be serious. It's because MySpace is for the poor, and Facebook is for the rich. And there a lot more poor than rich.
- brjndr, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4I noticed friendster wasn't even on there. They were the first one I signed up with back in the day. Looks like no one uses it anymore.
- Crath, on 01/17/2008, -1/+350%+ jump in one year for facebook. Give it time.
- WilliamHBonney, on 01/18/2008, -1/+0wow i cant believe pownce isnt up there. shocking.
- ellenuza, on 01/18/2008, -4/+5All social sites are *****.
- borez, on 01/18/2008, -3/+1Myspace=Spamspace
- kryptocaine, on 01/18/2008, -1/+1I got more spam on facebook than myspace, and i don't use either anymore.
- Zandarrr, on 01/18/2008, -3/+4Keep in mind 75% of the accounts are spam bots.
- nandop, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Where's the data?
- urbandistrict, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3Hooray!!! I mean, who ***** cares?
Did anyone here move stock over this? - voodoochild461, on 01/18/2008, -3/+8Good, we don't want any Myspace kiddies on Facebook.
- Antz0rz, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2Thats some quality traffic there.
- Robodoon, on 01/18/2008, -1/+4WHO CARES. they are BOTH "ELITE" CONTROLLED OUTLETS...YOUR NOW ON A LIST....but who isn't.
- Antz0rz, on 01/18/2008, -2/+1PREPARE THE TINFOIL HATS
- Dumbledore, on 01/18/2008, -3/+10Facebook pwned Myspace until all of those stupid applications took over...
- cycac, on 01/18/2008, -1/+13Facebook is alreadying starting to look like MySpace with all those dumb apps now.
- geneticlone, on 01/18/2008, -3/+3Facebook still kicking MySpace's ass in everything else.
- nandop, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Except for the music. So that makes it two: traffic and music.
- samfishercell, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3Yeah and Walmart still beats out other stores in sales, and ***** outnumber humans.
When all the chips are down though - Virb for the win. Gotta love good design.- bingobongony, on 01/18/2008, -2/+1True...because Walmart is a great place to shop for the things that they offer.
- samfishercell, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Those little asterisks there are standing in for 'roaches'... in case anyone was wondering what the censored word I boldly claimed outnumbered humans was.
- insanebrain, on 01/18/2008, -3/+3"Myspace Still Kicking Facebook's Ass in Traffic"
- who cares ? - Snuff99, on 01/18/2008, -2/+3They are both just tools to communicate. Why are you all ***** and moan about who's hammer is better? Just use your damn hammer and get the damn job done, screw what kind the other guy is using.
- mizatt, on 01/18/2008, -4/+4I tend to notice a much lower class of people using MySpace. That may sound offensive but I don't know how else to say it. Facebook got it's start with college students and during that time everyone else was pretty much on MySpace, so for a high school or college dropout or someone working a minimum wage job that was the only place to go I guess. And there are a lot more people working in the mall than there are college graduates, so here we are. It will probably always be traffic king because retail floor employees are too lazy to figure out how to bombard each other with their favorite ***** r&b tracks on a whole new service.
- bingobongony, on 01/18/2008, -5/+2That is because YOU are too stupid to use MySpace.
- mizatt, on 01/18/2008, -1/+1I have a MySpace account. And I'm pretty sure that anyone who can identify the symbols on their keyboard is smart enough to use MySpace.
- Syphon8, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2There's such a thing as stupider than MySpace users?
- bandergrove, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Yeah, YouTube users. Have you ever read the comments they post?
- Syphon8, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Well I just assume they're the same people, just on different websites.
- bandergrove, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Yeah, YouTube users. Have you ever read the comments they post?
- bingobongony, on 01/18/2008, -5/+2That is because YOU are too stupid to use MySpace.
- KaivenTor, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2The key here isn't just the traffic amount or the market share, it's also the growth rate of the market share.
- s3Canuck, on 01/18/2008, -0/+0meh, thats only in the u.s tho
- bingobongony, on 01/18/2008, -0/+8Of course they are. For every post on Digg that claims that they closed their MySpace and joined Facebook, a lot of college graduates do just the opposite (only Facebook makes it so hard to close that they just ignore it.) And most new Facebook users keep their MySpace and are active on it.
The reason is simply. Becuase there is absolutely nothing wrong with MySpace. You get what you put into it. If you are stupid and go nuts, you are going to get that crappy experience that people talk about with the horrible layouts, loud music, videos starting up, etc. But you can get the same crappy experience with Facebook if you are stupid. Just in a different way. On the lfip side, if you are smart with your privacy settings, you can get a good experience from MySpace.- zc456, on 01/18/2008, -1/+0So basically your saying, its not all MySpaces fault? I wish I read this sooner. By my experience I've kept my privacy setting in full gear and have not had a single problem. Until I disabled CAPTCHA for some reason. Then the bots started flooding in a day or 2 later requesting for a friend each and every time. I thought I was gonna haft to leave MySpace cause of it. Turns out it was of course the CAPTCHA setting was disabled. Once that was re-enabled, they stopped flooding my request page and everything went back to normal. So in many ways, your right. It not all MySpaces fault.
- sapo916, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Myspace just has a greater bliss of simplicity and less effort, just copy paste a garble of markup and tada.
- sutro33, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Now that it looks like Scrabulous is going to be taken off Facebook, I will officially have no reason to login.
