“MySpace for Jobs” Receives $18M
mashable.com — Interestingly, Jobster doesn ’t make its money from consumer-facing services. Instead, it builds Friendster-style social networks for nearly 400 corporate customers, who pay between $1,000 and $9,000 per month for the service. Customers include Boeing, Microsoft, Expedia, Google and Starbucks.

Knowing recruiters these days though they will top it off by it being a position for a web developer and the requirements will be to design web pages as 'slick' as myspace personal pages. (sarcasm/rant)

Thnx for the add! - fustanella, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"MySpace for Jobs"? Sure. It's called LinkedIn. o.O
- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0that was my initial reaction too. Who needs innovation when you have $18M
- duest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It always sets off alarm bells in my head when I hear about "the new (something) for (something)!".
If a concept can only be described in terms of other concepts, it probably sucks.- M1ndless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try to describe anything without the use of other concepts. It's impossible, this is how our language works; everything is a concept.
- Buckets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If you want to make something sound good, don't relate it to MySpace
- indiekid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8just because you guys don't like myspace (i don't either) doesn't mean that valid points can't be made with mentioning it. myspace is currently the 800,000,000 pound gorilla, and there's obviously something they're doing right to do so. now granted, every service made after myspace will just get compared to myspace, but with good reason...what they did was incredible...
- hello2usir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Myspace was in the right place at the right time. Nothing more. There isn't anything special about it. There's no genius business model driving it.
- weaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hah. Every other article in that guy's blog seems to be comparing some site or service to MySpace.
- AugustZephyr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's because MySpace is awesome.... NOT
- daurkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4just like every mp3 player is compared to ipod
- redrocker93, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Thanks to the capital J, I thought it was for Steve Jobs.
- aylwin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Site's dugg already? That was weak.
- disrupter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think it's hilarious
- Rousterfar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ok, I have not RTFA yet, but right away the headline to this sent alarm bells off. I mean do you create a MySpace like profile for yourself, picture and all? Wouldn't that be a BAD idea? A large majority of job hunters are already working a job when they choose to start looking for a new one. The last thing in the world you want is for someone in your current company to search a website like this and discover you, picture and all, trying to leave them. So, am I missing something here?
- Rousterfar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well I read the article and created an account. Yes, you do create a full profile and can add a photo of yourself. The photo is optional, but I can picture someone out there adding one and getting fired over it. Will be interesting to see how this site works out.
It's got a "geek cool" look to it so I have a feeling it's going to be great for the Digg community type in job hunting. - lhenkel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11) If you read the headline, you read the article. Not much depth in reporting there.
2) All of these sites let you block infomation that make you personally identifiable (if you choose). I'm sure employers could connect the dots in some cases, but you're pretty safe most of the time (unless you're an idiot like me with a recognizable name as your logon) - nonsequitor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As a professional consultant I'll be creating a profile for myself as soon as I get home from work tonight. I don't think the HR people where I'm currently working will care, I may even send them a link to add to my permanent file here so they can find an updated resume of mine whenever they want.
This of course might be an issue for full timers, but my contract at my current job will be running out in 2007. And while I have a few future contract prospects on the table already, more options are always better. Looking at the companies interested in this site, I may be able to incorporate myself as an LLC ahead of schedule since I currently do most of my work through staffing firms, this may be a good way to cut them out of the picture.

I think the employer side is where pretty much all job search sites make the lion's share of their revenue. - fillup07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wohoo LinkedIn !
- bsingin64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MYSPACEFORJOBS.COM is available :)
- bribera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5so is RUPERTMURDOCHSUESYOURASSOFF.COM
- jfritz828, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just doing some quick math:
$1000-$9000 per month per client, 400 clients... Estimate $5000/month/client == $2,000,000 a month
Why did they go to VC's for approximately 12 months worth of revenue? Are these guys that far in the hole?
Sounds like a typical .COM scenario... 150 employees, $20mil a year in revenue, and asking for another year's cash now? What are they doing?!?- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I imagine it's because they actually need money in the bank *now*, not at the end of the year.
In the real world, you have to pay the bills when they are due, not when it's convenient or when you finally have the money. - bribera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, if you read elsewhere you'll see differently: http://gigaom.com/2006/07/19/jobster/
Apparently they already have some $30 million in VC in the bank, and didn't need more money. They were approached by by Reed Elsevier Ventures - not the other way around.

- nayr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2starbucks?
- jo42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, they need people that get the Starbucks coffee lingo just right: "Large dark coffee" becomes "Tall Venti Grande Bold".
- Oofoot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0JobVent.com is better. It offers a completely anonymous way to rate your jobs and see what other people are saying.
- williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It exists. It's called LinkedIn, and it's pretty good.
