- philovivero, on 10/12/2007, -7/+92We could have 100 stories like this, and another 100 about how the internet helped put child pornographers and paedophiles behind bars, and the mass media would STILL demonise the internet and all the popular services on it.
We're stealing their audience. I can't believe I used to watch television and read the newspaper. I check them out these days and the stench of lies, corruption, deceit, and paid placement just makes me ill.
Say what you want about blogs, Slashdot, Digg, and whatnot. We have our silly conspiracies and controversy. It's still 100x better than traditional media, which has completely sold out. - HaroldHupmobile, on 10/12/2007, -5/+80"He also said investigators had learned the suspects were computer buffs who liked violent video games."
This is bad journalism and unnecessary to the story. - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47I cant beleive that they threw in the line about them liking violent video games, that is just a cheap shot at the video game industry. You know what you will never see in these articles, the phrase "he liked to watch the news a lot which has a lot more violence then any video game."
- CyberSmackdown, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45It's freakin 420. People are supposed to chill, not kill.
- vvvv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33"Police also learned that in addition to their computer use and game playing, the suspects also frequently breathed 'air' and ate 'food'. Investigations are ongoing as to whether these were contributing factors."
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35What, you think they are going to have a story involving teenagers and shooting without mentioning they liked to play Doom, or Unreal Tourney?
- CRASSPUNXTEXHTV, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29how stupid were they to post it on myspace(i mean don't get me wrong i am happy there paln got foiled)
It's just like telling the cops your going to rob a bank - DEFSMAC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25www.myspace.com/iamtoostupidtoplanashooting
- Mambo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Notice they still made a jibe at violent video games...
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Every news source is biased. Don't pretend that theirs if tainted and ours is not.
- EnricoFermi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20"I've planned things like that before...but it was just for fun...it's not like I'd ever do it, and I'm not going to go posting on MySpace "bragging" about it."
But you're posting it on digg instead. - KillSudo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26@dikn0z
"Usually when a story leaves the queue without making it to the front page, it's the digg community's way of telling you that the story is not interesting enough to merit posting."
I would not say thats always the case. Title and when it appears plays a major role and by the looks of this story people are interested. - digger247, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17You people dont have to say "its a dupe". This poster didnt know the story was already posted, and theres no glory forsaying "i was the first poster u duped!"
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15If we just shoot all the kids first, we wouldn't have to worry about them shooting each other.
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18glad you posted this, i was going to.
most video games are violent. most video game sales are of violent ones. it would be worth noting if they did NOT like violent video games.
also, computer buffs? this isn't the 80s (or 90s even), computers are cool now haha. maybe these idiots were social outcasts too, but using their interest in violent video games and computers to show that is pretty weak.
(but yeah, that shouldn't outweigh the fact that it is great that they stopped potential murders, gg) - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I'm a computer buff and I've played plenty of violent video games... Hell, I was bullied from kindergarten through grade 12...
Funny, I never went on a killing spree. Hmm, something tells me video games aren't the issue... - thebigkahuna, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20i read that too and laughed....goddam people are stupid....i play violent video games and i dont want to kill people.....its not the video games that tell me to kill people its the voices in my head that do
- Frinkahedron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"He also said investigators had learned the suspects were computer buffs who liked violent video games."
What's that sound? It's Jack Thompson coming again to sav- RUIN! - the day. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Myspace finally does something good.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18I totally agree, why are people so stupid taht they would post a "secret" on myspace, it is ***** retarded, do these idiots think it is a good idea to give out personal info to EVERYBODY WITH A COMPUTER? that includes parents of thses kids. I see people posting stuff like OMG I GOT SO HIGH LAST NIGHT DON'T TELL MY PARENTS
- drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12They demonized comics, movies, television, radio etc etc all the same, its just the new content.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11No matter how you look at it, these kids were stupid. Stupid enough to plan a school shooting, and stupid enough to post it on Myspace.
Maybe they'll learn from their mistakes, if they're capable of it. - miket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12this just in: President Bush posts his Iranian invasion plans on MySpace....film at 11!
(disclaimer:yes i am republican, but come on, someone HAD to say that!) - revmitcz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9tell me something....
why does every article about foiling the plans of disaffected youth always fail to associate the problem with a society that encourage rampant *****, and instead HAS to make mention of "violent videogames"?
Surely they're more concerned with strawman scapegoats instead of the REAL issue at hand, here. When your top-level government officials are international bullies with peace and understanding being the very antithesis of their controlling attempts - who amongst us is surprised that the youth of the country is inspired to follow their leaders?
As George Carlin said "This is the best we can do, folks. It's what our culture produces. Garbage in. Garbage out." - l0g1c, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Why can't the MSM see this? School shootings aren't caused by videogames"
Because videogames are a hell of a lot easier to make into scapegotes than the parents who *really* should have seen this behavior brewing in their kids. The fact that the plot was discovered on a website and not from suspicious friends/parents says a lot about their involvement in the teens' lives.
We can throw as many true-to-God examples of how videogames *don't* cause violent behavior, but that won't matter because those who rally against videogames simply don't understand them. Do you think Jack Thompson or Lieberman have played many videogames? Before GTA the scapegote was Doom/Mortal Kombat, before that it was violent movies, television - I'm sure someone blamed a radio drama on teen violence in the 20's.
Hitler liked to paint, Dahmer used to like to act, and these kids like to play violent videogames. Do any one of these hobbies turn you into a murderer?
I wonder what the next scapegote will be. - majorbabu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That's why there's ...
Skype: Its what the terrorists use. - antisthenex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm not so optimistic.
If they really had the heart to kill people, they wouldn't warn people like they did. MySpace didn't really prevent anything. It just gave the kids a way to get "caught." - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Computer buff is not only a very dated term, but in this case, inaccurate. They're using MySpace for God's sake!
- NewEvolution, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9From what I gathered, a "friend" on MySpace alerted the authorities. And yes, posting crap like this on MySpace is ***** idiotic. First rule of fight club and all that...
- sgtawol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Bunch of noobs got pwnt for posting strats in the pubs...
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Anyone have the URL to the kids MySpace pages? I want to read what kind of stupid plans they put on the net the got them busted...
- forgetfulca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8why is kowood voted down? He was being sarcastic, as OP seemed to think that being caught was somehow an undesirable outcome. ie, Suppose they did 'learn their lesson', and they learned how to properly ambush a school?
Let's get some things straight: mixed up teenagers with guns got caught BEFORE they nerved each other into ACTUALLY copy-catting columbine. Their bravado on myspace was noticed, a third party who became aware actually got involved and called the cops. Those cops actually listened and _contacted other police outside their jurisdiction_. And finally, those police actually looked into it, found evidence and rooted at least some (can't be positive it was all) of those involved.
I repeated all that because they are ALL how the 'the system' is supposed to work. Is anyone else absolutely blown away by that?
I'm especially in awe of the unnamed woman who called the cops. You rule, whoever you are. Knowing the would-be killers (and him or they probably knowing her) she still blew the whistle. Dunno for certain if I would risk it, everyone near me has always behaved sensibly with guns. - loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You can't be a Nazi without agreeing with Hitler's belief in the superiority of the Aryan race. That was like their thing, you know? Not many black or asian Nazis either.
There was a Jewish nazi though. Check out the movie "Europa, Europa" based on a true story. Jewish kid gets drafted into Red Army, gets captured by the Nazis, they're impressed by his Aryan looks and good luck, he goes to the premier Hitler Youth school in Germany. (Has some trouble hiding his circumcised schlong.) Survives the whole goddamn mess. - mtrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Watching the halls for what? If something went down, what could do teachers do?
- kevogod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8http://www.salon.com/news/feature/1999/04/22/columbine/
Dylan Klebold was a racist but did not subscribe to Nazi principles. Eric Harris supported Nazi principles but said he did not support the racist aspects of it. They were nutjubs and outsiders. - w0rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Idiotic? I don't think they really wanted to go through with it, at least one of them didn't. I'm guessing they wanted to get caught.
- cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why, don't you read Digg and all the commentors... They believe everything on the 'net too.
- GarrettC, on 10/12/2007, -4/+930 minutes away from me.
One word. Awesome. :( - forgetfulca, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"They were nutjobs and outsiders"
.... and attitudes like that help put them there. Congrats, you're helping to build the next one. - motbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Of course! Why didn't I see this before?
Playing video games (violent or not) makes you a nerd.
Being a nerd makes you unpopular.
Being unpopular get you bullied/hazed.
Most people can handle the hazing and express their anger in normal ways and, if neccesary, get counseling.
Others bottle it up and for years and years build up to one day where they completely lose it. (This was me; I slammed two of my tormenters headfirst into a locker before being sent home for the rest of the day. No one bullied me after that.)
Still others bottle it up to the point where they take the passive-aggressive route and shoot up their class.
Why can't the MSM see this? School shootings aren't caused by videogames; videogames=nerd, nerd=bullied, bullied=school shooting - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe I'm just too smart for my own good, but if you're planning to shoot up your school, it seems logical to me to NOT to post your plans on a POPULAR PUBLIC WEBSITE...
Dumb, dumb people. Please scheme smarter. I guess dumb people use MySpace. - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6perhaps they wanted the attention of their peers?
- synthesist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Haha, same thing happened at my school today. Some guy got arrested because there was rumors last night of him having a "hit list" on his www.nexopia.com page. The school was locked down to only 2 entrances the entire day and there was teachers watching the halls the whole day.
western canada high, calgary AB - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You are admitting to the world that you listen to Korn! Don't forget...Google caches everything! Years from now, you STILL won't be getting laid because of this admission.
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't know if you could exactly call the bullies "innocent". Let's call them "people that didn't deserve to die, but still need the ***** beat out of them".
- aoeuhtns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't think you need God to teach kids some moral. Parents should suffice
- joesnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3""I think there was probably some bullying, name calling, chastising," he said. He also said investigators had learned the suspects were computer buffs who liked violent video games."
that second part isn't necessary. one who is thoroughly experience and educated AND has had a pleasant experience with video games in general would understand the context, but literally everyone else would say AHHA! video games did it! GTA!! OMGWTFBBQ!!! blame the games!!..
and that... turned me off. - Duggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it doesn't mention the fact that they also liked guns... because they seemed to have a lot of them....
how the hell do kids get hold of guns that easily... i blame the perants... - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The "lesson" is (as the comment says) NOT planning a school shooting and NOT posting it on Myspace. Please tell me how the lesson became properly ambushing the school.
- kolobcreek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Maybe this is just another signal telling us that there is something wrong in our schools. And that these distraught teenagers are fed up with the way the other kids enforce their social dominance. Its sad these kids have gotten to the point they feel compelled to strike back with ultimate violence.
I would like to personally thank MySpace.com and the local police/sheriffs departments that I don't have to suffer 12 months of unrelenting news coverage and another bad movie from that Bloated Propagandist -
