- dougvfr750, on 06/16/2008, -5/+64Fines? Throw them in jail and make them eat Spam everyday
- GutterMoo, on 06/17/2008, -6/+59Shouldn't the money be going to Myspace members. Since, you know, they were the ones inconvenienced?
- 180andback, on 06/17/2008, -0/+29I'm glad MySpace is getting the money. It's so inconvenient for them when their users have to deny a dozen bogus friend requests a day.
- VegasKill, on 06/17/2008, -3/+26Myspace members need to get a job first.
- JasonHaley, on 06/17/2008, -0/+22In this case, he said, Media Breakaway had misunderstood MySpace's rules prohibiting commercial messages. "Once they told us it was wrong we threw the iron curtain down on it," Richter said in an interview.
Yeah, I agree with Richter. It's hard to tell if spamming is good / bad these days or if a website is against an advertiser harassing it's members. It's not easy for good honest spammers to make a living anymore with these harsh rules. - TheWhiteOtter, on 06/17/2008, -0/+16Love it or hate it everybody is glad that MySpace has won this one. The sad thing is though is that the spammers will be able to pay and continue to spam elsewhere.
- BXRWXR, on 06/17/2008, -5/+20***** SPAMMERS SUCK!
- ArchieAndrews, on 06/17/2008, -1/+15People or organizations who need representation in court during a long proceeding with a lot of research and legwork? Do I win a prize?
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -2/+14Profile tracker - it really works!
- benologist, on 06/17/2008, -1/+13FW: MAke $1000,00000,00 easily frind!!!!!
- sifuchar, on 06/17/2008, -0/+9I disagree. Spam is theft of resources, and dealing with it costs you money when you pay an ISP for internet service and costs business owners money to handle both the extra traffic and filtering. When someone steals, they are eligible for incarceration. While I would not agree with such a sentence for a first offense, definitely it should be on the table for flagrant or repeat offenders.
- purkel, on 06/17/2008, -4/+13spammers should be hung.
- noogiewoo, on 06/17/2008, -2/+11***** myspace.
- DynamiteMonkey, on 06/17/2008, -0/+9The fine should be every last penny they made from spamming + a little more (the -actual- fine).
As it stands, we're pretty much just charging the guy a tiny business fee. The 6 million in fees is probably not even scratching the surface for this guy. - ColorBlind, on 06/17/2008, -2/+11No, read the terms of service.
- IphtashuFitz, on 06/17/2008, -1/+10Um, Myspace incurred additional costs in network bandwidth, storage usage, etc. They also incurred costs associated with tracking down the spammer, filing the lawsuit, etc. The users may have been inconvenienced but the company suffered actual monetary damage because of the spammers. Many people don't recognize that this is the true price of spam.
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -3/+12Too bad dickface made 10000324902193481098273481723049871203984701293874 dollars and that ain't ***** to him....
- angusm, on 06/17/2008, -0/+8Richter's Media Breakaway is also reportedly the owner of a company called Dynamic Dolphin, which has registered literally thousands of sites that were subsequently advertised by spam. See:
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/06 ... - aaaleman, on 06/17/2008, -1/+8Best news of the day.
Now, if someone could get the ***** that posts the phishing scam about legal super buddha bud on Facebook by highjacking accounts, then world peace would reign. - inactive, on 06/17/2008, -2/+8what does it matter, myspace will still suck
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -6/+12Erm.. perhaps you don't realize what jail is for, along with millions of other dumbfounded people in this lynch mob.
Sending someone virtual advertisements, unsolicited or not, does not mean someone should be removed from society.
Fines are a perfect punishment. - granolajoe, on 06/17/2008, -1/+7Westminster is suburb hell and urban sprawl, complete with strip malls and cheap-looking apartment complexes. Life couldn't be any more boring there, and spamming is probably as exhilarating as it gets. Doesn't surprise me that those are the places idiotic spammers call home.
- russelbutt, on 06/17/2008, -6/+11hey now.. i happen to like spam!
- mt4055, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5LOL!

He is not going to pay ***** and walk away, smart guy - eregorn, on 06/17/2008, -1/+5This case is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar from over. It's just an arbitrator award. Since the amount is so large, expect the case to go on.
- tippmann1, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3honestly? you used google to add spaces then did a find and replace? why didn't you just start at the begining and do *left arrow* *left arrow* *left arrow* *comma*
- Rikkochet, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3I'd sooner they put all of the punitive damages into a legal fund to go after even more spammers.
- myFriendDerrik, on 06/17/2008, -8/+11Hey how have you been?! I have some new pictures of myself, but I can't post them on MySpace or I'll get banned (lol!) You can check them out here: http://www.moodrex.com/
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3Was that fun?
- wsuBobby, on 06/17/2008, -2/+5A victory for all the "pouty-kiss-lip" profiles everywhere.
- robEstyles, on 06/17/2008, -1/+4Myspace
- jemka, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3Used Google to get the spaces & then did a find/replace spaces with commas. I'm sure you've wasted more time on less.
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3But there are rules here in America. Please follow them, dillhole.
- Spuy767, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2@ Chris Guess I'm having the Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam and Spam.
- tippmann1, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2actually I always thought of the spam as a punishment for being emo and stupid (for dressing like that and still using myspace).
- Falldog, on 06/17/2008, -2/+4It's a civil case, so still alleged.
They found OJ liable in civil court but that didn't make him guilty of murder.
Just speaking technically here. - jobo5432, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2I used to work for that scumbag (indirectly). I worked for a company called Direct Response Technologies - owned by Jason Wolfe who was in allegiance with Richter.
I know it didn't start with this, but the most notable joint effort came out with "The Passion of the Christ". Jason had this idea to purchase 40,000 necklaces which were leather twine with a spike (like the kind you'd find nailing Jesus to the cross). They cost him all of $0.94/piece for the volume he bought. He then paid Richter (who sent us "Spam King" embroidered apparell) and "Real Big Media" a crapload of cash to spam his ad for these necklaces he was selling for $24.99, touting this as "official Passion of the Christ memorabilia".
Jason and Direct Response Technologies cleared their investment of $40,000 for the merchandise + $45,000 for the spam service easily and made some astronomical profits.
Most people ask the question "Why bother sending spam? Doesn't everyone just delete it anyhow?", but most people don't think. Richter and the rest of the jackhole spammers out there wouldn't be sending spam if people weren't reading and clicking/buying the message. As long as spam is effective marketing, it will continue to thrive.
Having said all that.... I hope they start punishing spammers with much stricter penalties. I think in addition to damages, restitution, and court fees, all spammers found guilty in court should be required to pay an additional tax to the government. Use this money to beef up national security (including spam defense). Make the spammers pay to shut themselves down, and at some point spamming becomes so self-defeating that it's just not worth it. - solidus636, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2You're*
- Vagari, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2Exactly. The first thing I thought after reading that quote was, "Don't be a dick" pretty much would have prevented all of this.
- TheAnarchist, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3"Once they told us it was wrong we threw the iron curtain down on it," Richter said in an interview
Since when was spamming "right"? - czeman, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2...from their testicles.
- joeanon, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3Myspace USER's should be the one getting the money not just one spammer to another.
Myspace is nothing more than a giant advertising site, what do you expect ? -
