- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+77This is classic. One look at a Myspace page and You Tube page and you pretty much know who's gonna win.
- Masna, on 10/12/2007, -4/+69Please, MySpace doesn't stand a chance against YouTube. I honestly believe YouTube is more popular than MySpace. Even so, I hate MySpace. It's just an excuse for ugly children to sit on the computer and "date" older guys online.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+58myspace will eventually die.
- zblackeagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+50Cut out the middle man?
Isn't MySpace the middle man between the users and the YouTube videos? - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+46digg vs nestcape
google vs microsoft
apple vs dell
spy vs spy
and now myspace vs youtube( vs google video vs metacafe vs yahoo video...) - Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39MySpace to YouTube: Ha! We'll make our own video service and pay for all the bandwidth ourselves! That'll teach you to cut our costs!
I mean seriously... what are they hoping to gain? MySpace and YouTube aren't even competitors. If another company is giving you free stuff why would you want to "crush" them?? - Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38Dugg because it made me laugh.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33I've always thought myspace to be rather pathetic with all the flashing crap.
- skbenja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28MySpace can't keep their web site up for more than a day at a time. They enforce Flash 9 use when that isn't even available on Linux, my dog's ***** looks better than their HTML code (and their CSS is atrocious!).
YouTube...has never been down for me and works on Linux. Oh, their design isn't bad either. - scratched, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27They'll crush YouTube just like Microsoft will "crush" Google...
Ha! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25I think myspace has really gone downhill, it's been taken over by complete cam whores, perverts, little girls acting like sluts, and emo's. Let it crash and burn.
- MicroBerto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Why would they want this? Let YouTube pay for all the bandwidth!
Myspace should stick with what they're "good" at, and let YouTube stick with what they're "good" at.
(Note the "good" in quotes because I really don't think either site is good at what they're "good" at).
MySpace makes money, YouTube burns it. Why enter that market?! Very few companies can do it all right now -- News Corp is NOT one of them. I see nothing but dilution from an investor standpoint. - cody50, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20"If you look at virtually any Web 2.0 application, whether its YouTube, whether it’s Flickr, whether it’s Photobucket…almost all of them are really driven off the back of MySpace"
I'm glad to say, not digg. - borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"YouTube...has never been down for me"
lol...it's down once a week to once a month for repairs and things like that. Not a big deal. And their design is simple, which is nice. - poxonyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16gregharmon: it'll take much more than a $1000 redesign job to fix myspace. They should have done it ages ago, but like you said, I doubt they (Newscorp/Fox or the spam company that own/ran it before) care. They'll milk it until it fades out, then try to revise it a hundred times like Friendster and Netscape.
- Genma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I would rather youtube crush myspace instead.
- CoolDude330, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Because ***** attracts flies. Flies with no social lives.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Myspace: the GM of the internet!
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Myspace servers suck. I've hosted video on myspace before, and no one could get to them, cause myspace always runs so slow. Youtube wins cause well, you can actually watch the videos.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15digging me down? Screw you guys. I'm gunna go to my corner, cry, slit my wrists and jack off to a picture of Elmer Fudd.
- djrtitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10look's like digg just crushed this website.
- Nick22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Even if it is true youtube gotlots of traffic from myspace, i doubt it would affect youtube much anymore if myspace suddenly stopped supporting them.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Traffic != Revenue. Especially expensive traffic like serving videos. YouTube might be better off without MySpace and even Digg.
When people go directly to YouTube, and use its community features, as opposed to just using it as a video archive, they are probably a lot more likely to click on ads. - chadu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10i agree. youtube may actually be better off without myspace's traffic - bandwidth siphoning.
- rkuchiki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"soon myspace will be useless web space"
It isn't already? - gdonald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8<snip>
60-70% of YouTube’s traffic comes from MySpace
</snip>
And I'm supposed to believe YouTube just up and told you that figure? Heh.. Yeah, right..
I find YouTube very usable, meanwhile I find MySpace to be a flaming piece of *****. Most user pages there are so full of crap they crash my browsers. I can't think of good reason to go there. - Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8YouTube may be a slicker operation in most technical respects, but on the business end of things, the free video hosting racket still likely needs to find itself some credible and reliable revenue streams. YouTube is a private company, so we on the outside don't know the details of its finances at this point, but most are inclined to doubt they can generate a profit with their current model.
So MySpace wants to try and steal a money-losing gimmick? So be it. Let them try. But in the meantime, YouTube's slick delivery is hard to beat. - kaje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I haven't been able to view BULLETINS all day. How the hell are they going to be good for viewing VIDEOS?
- twatwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Whats myspace going to crush youtube with?
Its gaping flash exploit? - MarkStrube, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"As if we needed more proof of MySpace ’s intolerance of outside development..."
It's called competition. None of the consumer products you use on a daily basis would be as good as they are (or even exist) if not for competition. Apparently some people don't realize this concept applies to the web as well. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7myspace vs youtube? thats like apple vs oranges... you cant compare the two becuase the provide difrent services. Youtube is for videos and myspace is for internet social seeking.
how is myspace popular? its a piece of ***** - RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You're not kidding. "Old school" executives NEVER get it, and ALWAYS boast about how they'll KILL and SMASH their COMPETITION. Yawn. I am bored with these types.
- bluemist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If you mean "crush" as throwing a chair...
- Somniis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree with Gump..... MySpace IS a piece of *****.
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7IIRC, I think MySpace blocked out urls to a specific website once upon a time (I forget which site).
It's possible MySpace plans to open their own video service and block out YouTube. I predict if they do this it will seriously hurt their reputation. Even the MySpace crowd is smart enough to get angry when their links no longer work. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If you mean "crush" as in doing a stealthy coporate buyout for 70% of current shares then yes Microsoft will crush google (kidding)
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have no love for youtube, but I loath myspace. Even if myspace adds a video component, I'll never use it, and I'm sure there are plenty of others who feel the same.
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You think that's bad? Check this one out:
http://www.myspace.com/beautifulsqaurdon - razei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It was just a rumor.
- skeeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or they could just pay that guy who did a mock up redesign of MySpace a couple months ago and posted it on his blog / design / whatever site. I recall seeing a link to that here on Digg. What he did to tweak and enhance the existing MySpace design looked pretty good.
Anyway, MySpace should get MyTube.com for their internal video service and make it appear as an external site. lol. Maybe that'll get more people to start using it. - Ribald_Jester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ahh - thats the way to setup a walled garden on the web. Go for it newscorp - lock out all outside tools and products, and try to force everyone to only use your crap. You think you are the only social site on the web? Want to be the next AOL? Guess what - this is the web. That means divergent systems interconnect. People link to and from sites. This sort cave man, "we'll crush the enemy" posturing is so old and pathetic. Chernin probably has no idea how the web works - and comments like these just prove it. Once myspace has locked people in too much, people will just leave for the next hot site. Welcome to the web!
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Did Peter throw a chair too? Balmer would approve.
- elastikos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If I'm looking for a video, the last place on the internet I look for it would be myspace. YouTube has a long, bright future.
I would buy a bottle of champagne if myspace disapeared all together. What an Arse-Hat of a website. - Azathoth624, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Chernin probably has no idea how the web works"...
I think that's a bit harsh... surely he knows - like all of us - that the internet is a series of pipes... - nobogeys217, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wow! now there will be a place on the web devoted to 13 year old girls saying "like oh my God!" and dancing to the backstreet boys. whats will they think of next.
- ItNeverEnds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I really don't go to MySpace that much. It has millions of the ugliest pages in the world, and almost every one reminds me of http://www.somethingawful.com/angelgurl/index.htm"
That page crashed my browser....Oh, wait, that's exactly what most MySpace pages do too. - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"it’s time to cut out the middle man."
If only he was against the RIAA and MPAA.... - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I want myspace to DIE, I use that piece of crap because everyone I know uses it, we need to move on to a better website.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Youtube is so much better than myspace, its a social site, with videos, that has a NICE layout
- nobogeys217, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3youtube wont be less popular but the rest sounds pretty good to me.
