Municipal Wireless Kicking Tail in Kansas
buzz.lawrencian.com — A municipal wireless provider in Lawrence, Kansas is showing the rest of the country how it is done. Lawrence Freenet's low income focus has forced a dominant cable operator to become the first in the nation to provide free broadband to low income families. Not bad.

- gringochilango, on 01/11/2008, -0/+0I know the guys that started this project and they're doing a really good thing. People who can afford the net pay *less* than what the cable & dsl companies are charging in Lawrence, plus like 10% of those paid subscriptions goes to help pay for net access for low income families with school aged children. I imagine their low prices forced the local cable internet provider to drop their prices & also offer free access to low income families.
- geebs2525, on 01/11/2008, -0/+0Well Done! The group of individuals at Lawrence Freenet made a real change in a town that is dominated by one media group. The idea was extremely far fetched when introduced. This is a HUGE accomplishment!! I hope this catches on and that other locations use this same strategy to lower internet costs. Congratulations Lawrence! Congratulations Lawrence FREENet!!!!!!!!!
- offlogic, on 01/12/2008, -0/+0Lawrence Freenet has proven that "pro-bono" service can shame the monopolies into lowering their prices and even doing the right thing on occasion. The fact that they are doing it on a modest budget makes me wish they'd launch a franchise in my area.
Keep up the good work gang! - MattZimms, on 01/23/2008, -0/+0I have been to their offices and know one of the personal that works there. He is a great guy and a real visionary.
