- khaosx2030, on 11/29/2008, -12/+165Surprise, they don't live in caves. Once everyone gets over stereotypes and generalizations, we can finally tackle the problem of terrorism better.
- outlawbebop, on 11/30/2008, -5/+90what?? who cares that they used a blackberry??
Terrorists use a 19" Sanyo TV to watch the reaction...ooooooooooo - Shazbuckle, on 11/30/2008, -8/+90OH MY GOD THIS IS SHOCKING I DIDN'T THINK THEY EVEN HAD ELECTRICITY OH CRAP WE ARE SCREWED
- outsdr, on 11/30/2008, -1/+74The headline makes no sense. Try "Mumbai Terrorists Watched World Reactions Using BlackBerrys" or "Mumbai Terrorists Watched how the World Reacted Using BlackBerrys."
- bonk2k, on 11/30/2008, -0/+41BREAKING: Terrorists use communication devices to communicate.
- darkslide29, on 11/30/2008, -1/+42a Sanyo though? Of all the brands...
- RobotBuddha, on 11/30/2008, -9/+42Inhuman? Pft, way to be in denial about your own nature. Like it or not, but the ability and willingness to do this kind of thing is uniquely human.
- ragez, on 11/30/2008, -1/+31why are there so many racist idiots on digg?
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -2/+29One of the terrorist who was captured alive wanted to live after seeing the people who were killed.

Al Qaeda and LeT must be proud of him. - inactive, on 11/30/2008, -4/+30Only overrated and overpriced aluminum foil wrapped crap.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -1/+27THEY HATE US FOR OUR IPHONES!!!
- ranold, on 11/30/2008, -2/+26This can mean only one thing: Blackberrys need to be banned. I blame this on Canuckistan.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 11/30/2008, -0/+22Yeah, you get the wrong kind of virgins in the afterlife if there is any confusion.
- aDJsavedmylife, on 11/30/2008, -9/+29"DEATH TO WESTERN CIVILIZATION!!!
Oh, except all the sweet technological advances, we'll keep those."
I appreciate that Arabs contributed to early science and technology (mathematics, astronomy, the alphabet etc). But of recent years; 99% of technological inventions and advances have been what Fundamentalists would refer to as the 'western world' (The USA, Europe, Far-Eastern Asia).
I don't really know where this comment is going. But I just think it's ridiculous how they are against our culture but love the fruits of it.
How about you stick to your cave, your vile ancient racist, sexist, homophobic 'morals' and I'll have my relative freedom, relative equality and my BlackBerry. - ClubKnowledge, on 11/30/2008, -0/+19Getting rid of terrorism?? We cant even control regular crimes.
- jamesmcm, on 11/30/2008, -0/+19Haha first you link to the Daily Mail and then to the Daily Mirror like either of them are at all credible.
- mallipeddi, on 11/30/2008, -0/+18Not just this - they downloaded digital maps to their computers; used Google Earth to look at South Mumbai. Also rumored that they were monitoring Twitter (not sure how true this is but the Indian Govt asked Indians not to "tweet" what they were seeing from outside). Indian Govt also shut off 24/7 cable news in that part of Mumbai because the cable news guys were giving away too much info.
- ChristBehemoth, on 11/30/2008, -1/+18If you must know, Gizmodo missed out a whole lot of facts. News reports in India suggest the Blackberries were on Orange UK, on roaming.
- chris062689, on 11/30/2008, -11/+27See! See! The government told me phones were dangerous, that all of this wiretapping was for our good! We should have listened to them! .... oh wait.
- DylanSpliff, on 11/30/2008, -1/+15You're an idiot. It's the likes of you that make our country an unbearable ***** to live in, Indians are some of the world's brightest individuals. Our teachings spread it's filth to plague the rest of the world, so you have no one to blame but yourself. If they leave Saudi Arabia, what do you think is going to happen to our economy? They've got leading jobs in various sectors, so keep your disgusting attitude to yourself.
- savocado, on 11/30/2008, -2/+16OMFG, is it such a f-ing surprise that terrorists use tech? what would you think they would use, smoke signals and a stone tied to an stick?
- mentor1972, on 11/30/2008, -0/+13they were not more than 20-22 y.old.
- vanguardanon, on 11/30/2008, -1/+14"Surprise, they don't live in caves"
Not so fast there buddy. It's not like they had an iPhone. :-) - moxley, on 11/30/2008, -1/+12Those attacks were awful...Why is this article news? Do people really think terrorists only know how to use guns and explosives? Anybody who has decided or been manipulated into doing something this awful where they will surely die is going to use every possible tool at their disposal - they aren't cavemen...
1. We will never be totally rid of terrorism. Terrorism has always existed and will always exist, and if you think it can be "gotten rid of" then you're a ***** idiot who likely believes everything your government tells you. It has been a favorite tool of despots for thousands of years - nothing, absolutely nothing works faster or better to manipulate the public into wars or giving up their freedoms.
2. I don't know about these attacks, but the majority of terrorism is state sponsored in some way - even when it appears not to be, or when it is called something else (like "low intensity combat operations,") i'm not saying all of it is by any means, but more often than not.
3. By giving up your rights to "feel safer" you become more suseptible to being terrorized, not less.
4. Even if the number of terrorist attacks worldwide increased by 100 times, just as now you'd still be way, way, way (orders of magtnitude) more likely to die in a car accident or be murdered in your own home by someone you know. - mallipeddi, on 11/30/2008, -0/+10Only a couple of them were UK citizens. Basically they're a mix of Muslim kids from various parts of the world - UK, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mauritius. They were all given marine training in PoK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir).
- zadadka, on 11/30/2008, -0/+10For the same reason there are so many racist idiots anywhere else....ignorance has no boundaries or limits.
- sinkhead, on 11/30/2008, -2/+13When will people stop linking to the Mail and implying that anything it says is in any way truthful?
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -2/+13says who. More carriers carry the iphone in india then in America. Both vodafone and Airtel have it and its still *****.
- elister, on 11/30/2008, -1/+11PGP has been available for Blackberry for some time. Its not available for the iPhone.
Of course, PGP & Blackberry support terrorism about as much as the Ryder Truck Company does.
PS
What was the point of the article again? Gizmodo produces alot of pro-mac articles. I guess they wanted to promote the fact that the iPhone wasnt used by terrorists. Out of all the horrific ***** that went on this week, this is somehow getting details. Wheres the blog talking about the new weapons they had (made in America), the bombs that were used (key components made in America). ?? - Shazbuckle, on 11/30/2008, -3/+13By "inhuman", the author means "morally wrong"
- moonaust, on 11/30/2008, -0/+10That title makes my head hurt.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -2/+12I'm sorry but it's just not as easy as"everyone gets over stereotypes and generalizations".
- zadadka, on 11/30/2008, -2/+12It would only come as a surprise to "non-connected" people, that individuals who have grown up with technology constantly to hand, would use those technologies during this or any other endeavour, act, or atrocity (select for yourself)....
As for make & model, irrelevant.... supplied from a quartermaster ... probably from an untraceable batch (whether stolen, or bought on eBay then passed hand-to-hand many times), or rigged to point blame... the Sims would be similarly untraceable, or rigged to point blame.
We'll know more in a few days, but there's something not quite right about this:
Why Mumbai? Apart from its comparitive security softness, there's nothing here to single it out at a "proper" terrorist target.
Also, these guys shot anything that moved; whilst they might have made some early pretense about seeking Yank or Brit citizens, foreign national fatalities only-just make the double-figured percentile.
Again why Mumbai? Choosing a Western target, also easily accessible from the sea (say Cannes, Sidney, or LA County) would make for a far higher profile media event, as well as bringing the terror "to the front door", just as 911 did.
And why a close-quartered assault? Targets become scattered fairly quickly once you start capping rounds ...a device would have yielded higher casualty numbers if that is was what was intended.
Something tells me the answers to who brought terror to Mumbai this week will lie closer to home than "international terrorism". - Flyman360, on 11/30/2008, -1/+10Shouldn’t cell phone jamming and other communications blocking technology be a part of an anti-terrorism portfolio?
- Jude007, on 11/30/2008, -1/+10Thats very trite, and obviously lacks any understanding of the goals of terrorism, in its myriad forms. Some former IRA members are now very rich individuals, they did very well out of it. Terrorism isn't a goal its a method, and yes 911 worked like a charm, and still works today, to divert trillions from governments around the world into private hands.
- arkaycee, on 11/30/2008, -0/+9Well, some terrorists pulled some bad ***** in Boston, dumping lots and lots of tea into the harbor.
Ya see, afterward, if it works, it's patriotism.
Seriously though, terrorism doesn't work very often. 7% success rate according to one study:
http://netwar.wordpress.com/2007/07/17/failure-of- ...
One simple explanation about failure of terrorism (particularly against civilians) is that people tend to assume "they hate us and want to kill us" to be the only goal, and ignore or disbelieve any other goals the group may be trying to promote. - inactive, on 11/30/2008, -5/+14Yep, as soon as we fully understand they are tech savvy, modernized, hip, with it and probably listen to rap music they will STILL be MURDERING in horrific ways innocent men, women, children and anyone who doesn't believe like they do.
- Ericdigital, on 11/30/2008, -0/+9I was hoping for a new picture every time I refreshed =[
- Crisender111, on 11/30/2008, -1/+10And I salute your irrelevant idiotic comment.
- killacamry, on 11/30/2008, -8/+17maybe obama is a terrorist after all
- ScottyAnimal, on 11/30/2008, -0/+8I bet Blackberry is loving this news!
- aDJsavedmylife, on 11/30/2008, -1/+9No I'm not, I don't know why you'd think that, you're making a judgment based on one statement I've made against religious fundamentalists. I am against any form of fundamentalism (Evangelical Christian, Sectarians in Northern Island, Islamic), I'm actually opposed to any sort of organised religion based on scripture and not rational thought. I'm digressing..
If I were a victim of 'western propaganda', I'd be pro-Israel, pro-Iraq etc. But I'm not, of course you didn't know that yet saw fit to make a sweeping prejudgment based on one statement I'd made.
My point is that those not willing to work on a basis of co-operation and are based on a religion that inspires and encourages militant religious expansionism...Yet reap the rewards of the hard work of a culture and society they hate are compel insane and without reason, well I guess I would expect no less to someone who follows a Abrahamic religion in a literal sense. - kinerry, on 11/30/2008, -1/+8the freedom towers are still holes in the ground and every business near ground zero has gone under
they won this round, get over it - RabidOrange, on 11/30/2008, -4/+11Lesson from history, terrorism has a 100% failure rate.
The IRA tried for years to rid Ireland of the British, even attacking mainland Britain and London but it didn't work. The British armed forces remained, they hunted down terrorists and policed the region without any sign of leaving. It took peace and both sides coming to the table to talk before the British left.
New York is still the city that never sleeps, still one of the greatest cities on earth and its financial workers still go to work every day just as they did before. Two passenger jets and the destruction of two iconic parts of its skyline not to mention the loss of so many lives and New York is still New York.
London commuters still go to work and return home on the tube. They still get on busses to get around the city. Multiple bombs and still life goes on.
Mumbai will be no different. It will take time for the city to heal, for the people to grieve but as a city and a nation they will move on. It will still be a center for finance, for Bollywood and for holiday makers wanting an Indian holiday.
It doesn't matter the age, the people behind it, the cause they fight for or the technology they use. Terrorism has and will always have a 100% failure rate. - stormofswords, on 11/30/2008, -0/+6Bravo. I support you one hundred percent. I despise people on Digg who can't wait to bash Christianity at the first chance, but when something critical of Islam shows up, they go into "Cultural Sensitivity Mode" and fall over each other trying to excuse disgusting behavior in the name of Islam by pointing out that Christianity isn't guilt-free.
This isn't a pick and choose type of thing. You either go after all organized religion, or none of it. I'm glad to see that there still people like you on Digg, aDJ, who aren't afraid to take a stand against ALL religions in the name of rational thought. - burningmanstan, on 11/30/2008, -0/+6All very good points. Although I bet they simply purchased those blackberries probably under their own name. They apparently had no interest in hiding their identities (no masks etc.) and no specific demands. It seems their strategy of just causing random carnage is more in line with a school shooting not an Al-Qaeda attack. India and the media seem to be scrambling to fill in all the gaps with political speculation (blame Pakistan etc) and terrorism goals. All evidence at this moment to suggests a bunch of sociopaths who wanted to die famous, rebels without a cause. The target just had to be a populated westernized area in order to generate media attention.
This BBC article has more on this.
