Mozilla sets Guinness World Record with Firefox 3 launch
arstechnica.com — The launch of the open source Firefox 3 web browser has set the new Guinness World Record for the largest number of software downloads in 24 hours. Mozilla's mirrors served 8,002,530 complete, individual downloads during the download day event following the official release of Firefox 3 last month.

- nuttyphilt, on 07/02/2008, -1/+21Great browser!
- Craga89, on 07/02/2008, -1/+25Even though I was only one of those 8 million people, I feel like I helped just that little.
*Ego asplodes*- 1legend, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Same here!
- DaHuuuuuudge, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Same here, which is why it's time to go tell people I'm in the Guinness Book of World Records.
- KibibyteBrain, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1And the thing is, as amazing as this is, I have to wonder if its strictly true. For example, I'd imagine there are many many downloads of windows, or even Linux and mac patches on patch release days, which while often less exciting, are just as much software as Firefox. Of course, i guess they "set" the record, so it could still be beat.
Still, it has to be the most fully elected downloads, or the most people downloading for a cause.
- widgetmaker, on 07/02/2008, -4/+8It is just a bit of software..
Having said that this is being posted from ff3 :) - sgtcaboose, on 07/03/2008, -12/+2poasting frm firyfox three omg!11
- skizzy, on 07/03/2008, -3/+16How many times is the same news gonna hit the front page?
Ps. I downloaded it on download day, yep im awesome- snapcase, on 07/03/2008, -3/+1Considering it's already on the top 10 from Mozilla's own blog, I'd rather just bury this as a duplicate.
- MavRevMatt, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1At least twice with this story, and I saw about 10 others in upcoming, so we'll see it a lot more.
- mlbwebdesign, on 07/03/2008, -7/+1We did it!...
yeah I got the email too. - iamtehwinnerz, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8http://downloadcounter.sj.mozilla.com/
28,746,100 downloads so far. - mehan, on 07/03/2008, -9/+4I think everybody on here knows this by now.
By the way, if you think FF is great, you owe it to yourself to try Opera 9.5, it's even better.- zwaldowski, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2"I owe it" to myself? This is like Starbucks. So egotistical.
- homer454, on 07/03/2008, -0/+14Hooray!
And don't forget for your "own personalized Firefox 3 Download Day certificate"!

- AwsmGy, on 07/03/2008, -2/+3This is one of the top topics RIGHT NOW; why is this being dugg twice?
- skizzy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3He obviously swore it was original
- aschepis, on 07/03/2008, -3/+3Firefox 3 has also set a record for number of crashes on my machine since install. I thought it was my plugins so i removed them all. For some reason when i'm on my VPN firefox crashes regularly. no idea what it is.
- skizzy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Your computer is one of the wierd ones... IE crashes way more than firefox
- ExRe, on 07/03/2008, -6/+2FFS, how many times does this same thing need to be submitted?
This happened 2 weeks ago and I've heard it hundreds of times already.- MavRevMatt, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3It was only confirmed today.
- RahulAithal, on 07/03/2008, -2/+0Good one1
- PooPsnooP, on 07/03/2008, -2/+3So whose record did Firefox 3 break?
- PhoneJack, on 07/03/2008, -1/+5They set the record
- DaviDTC, on 07/03/2008, -2/+1Dupe, but doesnt surprise me that is made front page with who submitted it. Thank god there is also a dupe detector. ***** the one in top stories was on the main page before this was even submitted.
- ajv570, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1WOOHOO best browser ever!
- proficient, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Excellent job Mozilla.
- ufia, on 07/03/2008, -3/+3Firefox 3 has also set the record for turning a perfectly good browser into an unusable MSIE look-alike piece of *****.
Having said that this is being posted from FF2 :) - BoneStamp, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I wonder if they track how many people went back to FireFox 2 because half their extensions didn't work. I loved FF3, but it doesn't improve the experience for me yet. Obviously not Mozilla's fault... I gotta get back to hounding these extension developers.
- TremorX, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1It's also currently in contention for "Most RAM used needlessly by a simple web browser." Being beaten by IE7 since technically it's a part of Windows Vista.
- macewan, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1This wasn't Dugg already?
- reallyandrea, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2DO NOT OPEN YAHOO MAIL IN FIREFOX 3 TODAY!
If you use Firefox 3 and then open a yahoo email, you will be directed to a website -- worthathousandwords.com. Except the new page won't load, it just keeps trying to connect. It's horrible. People are all over yahoo answers trying to find out what the problem is.
Yahoo Answers link: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Atec_ ...
The worthathousandwords.com website posted this response:
"We are aware of a problem with Firefox and Yahoo Mail.
There is no problem if you use an IE browser to read Yahoo Mail.
Also a temporary solution is to disable JavaScript in Firefox.
We apologize for the problem, it is not intentional.
We have contacted Yahoo and are trying to fix the issue with Firefox as quickly as possible."
I wish someone would offer some sort of an update about this...
PS I love firefox, but this is scary. I went back to Safari for now - I have a mac. The glitch is for mac and PC. I don't care for Safari at all.- jpkeisala, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Use GMAIL
- reallyandrea, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1UPDATE from my previous comment:
To cure the Firefox/Yahoo Mail problem:
On firefox.com, go to add-ons. Add "AdBlock Plus". In Firefox preferences, in Add-ons, go to AdBlock Plus preferences. Under add filter, add js.worthathousandwords.com.
That fixes the glitch. (Can't take credit for it - got it from Yahoo Answers)
Yahoo Mail works in Firefox again! YAY!
But they really need to get their customer support together. People have been emailing and calling with no answer from either company. - brown705, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2C'mon North Korea, ZERO downloads? Lighten up, people!
- pagno, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Im stuck with FF2. I love 3, but HD FLVs are unplayable in it, atleast on this computer. Works fine in FF2.
