- salome191, on 09/02/2008, -17/+280i seriously doubt Google's Chrome is going to be marginally better than Firefox. it'll be different, but i don't see people migrating from Firefox to Chrome in droves. only time will tell i guess.
- Phillbo88, on 09/02/2008, -25/+254I see "Chrome" being just as popular as Flock and Opera, and no more.
- Phlieger, on 09/02/2008, -6/+217Kind of funny since Google pays 87% of Firefox's revenue.
- tortov, on 09/02/2008, -0/+126I really don't think Google's intention with Chrome is to 'beat' Firefox or Safari. Google wants to make money off web applications, so they want to make the web into a better platform. They've got an idea of how to do it - giving each tab its own process and making the browser into a quasi-OS; Chrome is an experiment to see how well that works. If you read the comic, it's almost like their begging other browser makers to use their code and ideas.
- Berkana, on 09/02/2008, -1/+84My only question, as a web designer, is this: is this another quirky browser to have to support, or is it solidly standards compliant?
- Maratanos, on 09/02/2008, -1/+76Of course Mozilla isn't worried about Chrome. Neither is Google worried about Firefox. They're both open source, they can collaborate if they feel like it. Hardly cut-throat kill-each-other tactics here.
- jasarien, on 09/02/2008, -1/+66Since it's based on Webkit, it should be fairly compliant.
- subigo, on 09/02/2008, -2/+52I really think all the people here calling Chrome "just another Flock" and "Firefox clone" need to go read up on what they are doing. This is a completely new way of thinking when it comes to the world of browsers. Sure, it uses webkit, but what they've done with it is really impressive.
Granted, I haven't used it yet... but if they walk the walk, I just might have a new full time browser. - bryxal, on 09/02/2008, -1/+46Did you read the spec sheet? http://blogoscoped.com/google-chrome/ Per tab thread? process manager (to see what exatly is taking up room)? It will be very good I think. The first adopters will be Web Developers but I think with Google's marketing power it will take away a chunk from Internet Explorer's market share and that is a good thing.
- drikle, on 09/02/2008, -5/+45IE8 Allready has the "each tab a process" thingy. Now digg me down because I said IE8
- notwizt, on 09/02/2008, -2/+40You can't compare Mozilla vs. Google to Microsoft vs. Linux.
- RogueJediX, on 09/02/2008, -0/+29Should they be? Firefox and Chrome are both open source, so is it really that far fetched to think that the groups might actually, I dunno, collaborate instead of get in each others' hair?
- theaceoffire, on 09/02/2008, -1/+30Google's browser is open source. If they are recording something without telling you, everyone will know in minutes.
- freshyill, on 09/02/2008, -3/+30It's based on Webkit. Safari is the one browser that I never have to say to myself, "why the hell is it doing this?" when I'm building something.
It's got the best standards support of any browser out there, and it's getting better every day. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. - baldgye, on 09/02/2008, -1/+26I'm not sure if this will be a problem for Mozilla or not, I wonder if Google would want to drop FF (after the recently renewed contract is up) to try and entice people to their own browser or if they will just support both...
either way I'll give it a go for my 'surprise gift purchasing'... - omarciddo, on 09/02/2008, -2/+26@osmaker
Are you serious? They've completely reimagined the modern browser in ways Mozilla could only dream. Let's not forget the memory leak issue Firefox used to have, and Chrome's multi-process method of memory management blows the others out of the water. Also, WebKit renders pages faster than Gecko in my experience. And unlike Google's other non-search ventures, this one looks destined to be a winner.
On a side note, why should I (or anyone really) care about what company needs to worry about what others? I don't really care to show "loyalty" to any company, just use whichever product works the best and Chrome seems to be quite the game-changer. I could care less about the number of people that use my or "my rival" browsers, why the hell should anyone care? It's a ***** browser not a lifestyle choice. Use whatever works for you, be it Firefox, Flock, Opera, Safari, IE, or Chrome.
fanboyism - n. a form of thought that places more emphasis on a brand name than should ever be given, ie. to the point of not giving others credit where credit is due - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 09/02/2008, -5/+28Yeah, I think that would be reason enough for Mozilla to be crapping their pants right now...
- gritta, on 09/02/2008, -1/+24Chrome is a sucky name.
- kr3mliyn, on 09/02/2008, -0/+22OR, we could just digg you up for being right? I did. Google Chrome has openly borrowed ideas from other browsers. So it's no surprise.
- griffeycom, on 09/02/2008, -3/+25It's okay, Google's browser will probably stay in "Beta" for 10 years just like Gmail. The word Beta will scare enough people off that they'll just stick to IE/FF :)
- abhiroop, on 09/02/2008, -3/+25hmmmm...GMAIL, Google Reader, Calendar, Docs...
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -1/+19Yeah, except for everyone once in a rare while when safari does something completely mind-boggling that no other browser is doing. there was one site I worked on last year where an element started out where it was supposed to be, then jumped 500 pixels off the left side of the page as soon as you resized the window or scrolled - no reason whatsoever for that to happen, of course.
- jm1234567890, on 09/02/2008, -0/+18The idea that a crashing tab won't crash the whole browser is a HUGE selling point
- roodammy44, on 09/02/2008, -1/+17I think the extras will keep people on firefox.
Remember life without browser extentions? - notwizt, on 09/02/2008, -0/+15They shouldn't be, Firefox can just take all the new innovations and implement them since they are open source. People are free to use either the google browser or the Firefox browser, and they will be pretty evenly matched -- and that is the way it's supposed to be! One thing I really like about the google browser is that every tab is a different process, meaning the whole browser won't crash.
And another beautiful thing is that Internet Explorer will have a slow-ass javascript engine while the open source world has V8. Kazzam! - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -0/+14developers and other savvy users might - but you're right, average internetters won't migrate en masse just because it's new.
- peestandingup, on 09/02/2008, -1/+15Well, as long as Chrome works better on the Mac than Firefox & is more integrated with the OS like a REAL Mac browser is supposed to be instead of just a port over from the PC version.
Digg me down if you will, but FF on Mac sucks my balls. - SuperMoses, on 09/02/2008, -1/+15They don't just pay that amount and not expect anything in return. Firefox, which has almost 20% market share loads Google search engine by default. This is a pretty big help for google considering M$ loads Live on theirs. So it's not like Mozilla just collects charity from Google. Mozilla has something to offer and if Google doesn't renew their deal after 2011, then Mozilla will have other search engines to work with. Or have a portal page load by default with the sites on the front page being their advertisers. IE default page being a portal to a search engine, social network site, etc.
- oepapel, on 09/02/2008, -6/+2010% better is 100% different !
Ask Opera if you don't believe me...
Historically speaking, just being marginally better is just not good enough to convince people to switch. There isn't a current consensus that Firefox and IE aren't providing value and features that people want. This means that Chrome will have to show tremendous value in order to make a dent. Firefox was the last browser able to make headway in the browser market and that was only because the consensus was that IE had stagnated. Chrome does not have that luxury.
Let's not forget that WebKit is ALREADY available in Safari (and others) form and it hasn't exactly taken off. If Apple can't polish it into a product that gains significant (>10%) market share, neither can Google.
I personally believe that this is just Google in damage control mode after a product which shouldn't have seen the light of day for another year (to get the Mac and Linux clients done) was leaked way too early. - theaceoffire, on 09/02/2008, -0/+12For one thing, Mozilla gets lots of MONEY from Google for making them the default search engine.
- blaze03, on 09/02/2008, -0/+11Google products don't equal instant success. Aside from acquired products (ie youtube), Google's only real success stories are search/ads, and to a lesser extent gmail and maps. They make a ***** of money from their ads to fund these projects...most of which fade into obscurity.
Take a look: http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/ - Shmock, on 09/02/2008, -1/+12"a few years ago", dumbass.
- badassninja, on 09/02/2008, -7/+18Hum... I think you are forgetting that it is made by google and how easy it would be for good to push it. Think of how many people have the google desktop software. I don't have it because I have never cared. But weirdly I have seen people running that and IE at the same time.
- SmellyGeekBoy, on 09/02/2008, -0/+10I thought the main driving force behind Firefox's popularity was actually the excellent plugin architecture. I know it is for me.
- positron, on 09/02/2008, -1/+11So, tomorrow then?
- supguy, on 09/02/2008, -0/+10I thought it was a foundation....
- offdachizzane, on 09/02/2008, -1/+10THEY'RE
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -5/+14Webkit is kinda cool. There are downsides since the browsers built around it are largely immature and let's face it, other than Webkit Safari is quite annoying.
- solidus636, on 09/02/2008, -2/+11Isn't today yesterday's tomorrow?..Since it's technically tomorrow, it should come out today.
- Septimus, on 09/02/2008, -0/+9...and still aren't.
- birch25, on 09/02/2008, -0/+9still better than "cuil"
- Ymeg, on 09/02/2008, -4/+13"M$"
Oh, wow. I never read that before. You are real cool. - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -0/+9Its webkit.
- skyshock1, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8If their V8 JS rendering engine is as good as they're saying, I'd say the FF team has quite a bit to be worried about. That's FF's achilles heel IMO. As soon as the plug-ins start rolling in from 3rd party devs, there's going to be quite a heated competition I think. Which is fantastic I think, FF has needed a severe kick in the pants for a while now - consumers win.
- fandyboy, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8They'll probably change it once it goes gold.
- SmellyGeekBoy, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8Yep, seems like Microsoft are actually pulling their finger out with IE8. More competition in the browser market can only be a good thing.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8It's Open source, I don't think they could get away with that for too long.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8Everyone seems to be overlooking the fact that Mozilla isn't in in it for the money. The whole point of the Mozilla Foundation is to incite and inspire creativity, and force Microsoft to innovate.
"The Mozilla Foundation will ultimately control the activities of the Mozilla Corporation and will retain its 100 percent ownership of the new subsidiary. Any profits made by the Mozilla Corporation will be invested back into the Mozilla project. There will be no shareholders, no stock options will be issued and no dividends will be paid. The Mozilla Corporation will not be floating on the stock market and it will be impossible for any company to take over or buy a stake in the subsidiary."
-Wiki - SmellyGeekBoy, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8I do a fair bit of 'surprise gift purchasing', so I'll try it out too. In fact, I'm 'purchasing a surprise gift' right now.
- jasarien, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8And you don't think Microsoft do the same with Live?
