- Darph.Bobo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18They need to do something, Motorola phones have the worst software humankind has ever seen. I have a Razr and in June we'll see if it'll blend!
Maybe I'll put it on You Tube. - Iffrat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7new open source for phones..??
this in fact would be awesome i dont know how linux mobile would run but if it was open source i think they could really do some amazing things with it.. - sv650touring, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5duke,
Just to be clear, Beta lost to VHS, despite superior technology, because JVC was a lot more open with it than Sony was with Beta - Sony lost because they wanted to be a monopoly, not because VHS had one. - sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@lowlevel: What sort of Motorola phone are you using? Text input for SMS messaging has always been "***** running through molasses"-level slow for me. I would be able to type about 50 characters at fairly fast speed, and have to sit there and watch my damn phone catch up. And then it doesn't really use a traditional T9 for text input, which bugs me, considering almost all other numerical pad keypad equipped phones do. My family has had three RAZRs through T-Mobile, and the camera has sucked ass on all of them (VGA? Jesus H. Christ!)... My mom's old S/E T610 was much easier to use, much more attractive, and the only thing that bugged me on it was the smallish keys.

MOTOMING
http://id.motorola.com/motoming/index.asp - ronaldb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nope, you're wrong... Verizon didn't come on board with the RAZR until pretty late. Actually, a little over a year ago I was considering switching to Cingular because they were offering the RAZR while Verizon wasn't. I guess Verizon heard me, and allowed us to upgrade to a RAZR a month or two later...:)
- yomamadudeyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cingular had Razr first. You don't remember correctly - You should have that looked at.
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why would you waste your money on another phone if you already have a better one?
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Cingular/AT&T thing is no big deal because most of Cingular was old AT&T people anyways. Remember about 2 years ago they sold their wireless division to Cingular.
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5So you are really going to get one of those crappy iPhones? It doesn't have real powerful phone features but it priced like it does, it has just as much storage space as a normal SD card can give you and it is going to scratch like nobody's business. Be prepared to keep it in a seperate pocket away from keys, money, pens and anything else you have. Not to mention it isn't nearly as small as many phones and it has no replaceable battery.
- krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2the a1200 is awesome. i've had it since july. here's my writeup
http://www.djlosch.com/post_retrieve.php?pid=89
it has many of the substantive features of the iphone, and costs a third of the price. i maintain that with the stupid cost of the iphone, the a1200 is the best handheld out right now (will change when the openmoko is out though). and the a1200 is even comparable to the iphone. i thought the a1200 was locked down, but the iphone is attrocious... no software installation at all. - gkzhang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anybody know when the Motofone F3c is coming out?
It was that basic phone that was designed for developing countries.
It was released in India recently and the article got digged.
Apparantly it was supposed to be released before the end of 2006, but i haven't seen it yet. - avolant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2so have a way to easily set the firmware to default. if i screw it up and have access to just fix it, ill just fix it.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So charge people for that service of re-flashing the OS. If they mess with the OS on their phone and it breaks, they should be smart enough to realize that is not covered under warranty. *****, just because these things run Linux doesn't mean that they'll ship with the JTAG connector and instructions on how to modify, compile, and use the source code anyway.
- guypeters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Correct me if i am wrong but did Motorola make the apple Power PC and other apple computer processors in the past. Now with Apple using Intel processors and the introduction with Apple's iPhone, it gets me to thinking if their is any animosity between the companies.
- althanis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1xamox, I think that's more a failure on your buddy's part than on the operating system on the phone, I can turn on bluetooth in less than 5 seconds. And it didn't take me very long to find out how to do it the first time, I thought it was intuitive.
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yay, I already have the A1200 Ming, got it from Ebay about a month and a half ago. :)
- krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1i blogged that last month. apple patented it last year, but motorola had a device out 9 months later.
http://www.djlosch.com/post_retrieve.php?pid=92 third paragraph. - duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, not really - JVC was more open with licensing, but not in any other respect. But I didn't intend to carry my point that far. I only meant that the inferior product won due to market forces. You could say the same with Windows/Mac too, but I don't think that anyone would suggest that Windows was "open", simply because they licensed to a variety of manufacturers. Mac was clearly superior, but Windows had market strength that pushed it ahead and allowed a cheaper purchase price..
- DrDabbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hahaha. Gee. Those action buttons on the A1200 look REALLY close to Apple's. Who ripped off who? Another lawsuit?
- DrDabbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Never used a Verizon phone, have you. :-P I find Nokia has an intuitive and almost friendly feel to their software. Good phones, too.
- jmacdonagh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm really looking forward to a phone with Motorola's Java+Linux OS (a.k.a. JUIX). Unfortunately, I'm stuck with Verizon for the unforeseeable future, so I'll have to wait till they come out with a CDMA version.
Dammit, Motorola! Stop teasing me! - duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, it's funny how marketing and exclusive licensing agreements ensure that the highest technology phones can only use the lowest technology networks. First RAZR, Treo and others only available on GSM (at first, anyway), and now iPhone and this. And now that the Cingular/AT&T merger is approved, the monopoly power looks to be squeezing out the superior network technology. VHS/Beta all over again - but NO-O-O-O, FCC says the Cingular/AT&T merger won't be anything to worry about in being anticompetitive. Yeah, right.
- siddman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If I remember correct Verizon was first carrier to carry Razr, they are not GSM.
- mrchin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've had the A1200 Ming since March of last year. Awesome phone. All touchscreen. Sot unlocked from Hong Kong. I saw it's similarities to the iPhone once Steve announced it the other day. It has a similar interface for phone calls and conferencing or answering call waiting. Good interface though a bit cumbersome at times. Other bummer is no installing of your own apps to give additional functionality. I'm sure Apple's will have software updates to improve features which Moto's phone seem to never do.
a pain at times in the fact that it runs out of memory with apps running. They don't feel like apps but you're in a certain option interface then click on addresses or real player and everything just builds up. Things don't auto close. You end up having to hit the back button 10 times to close out each window. (though they're not really windows, just screens) Business card reader with OCR is cool too though it's more hassle to get it successfully read.
Came in red, black or white. I've got the glossy white one and it's been turning head for nearly a year. Know those phonoe guys in the carts in a mall that always stop you to sell a phone? Annoying. But they attempt to stop me then see my phone and continue to question me with interest. I'll still be replacing this puppy for an iPHone though. - DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2M$, really? Doesn't everybody make money? Isn't that the point of being in business in the first place?
- siddman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hmmm, maybe it was Q. I'm getting too old for this!
- Fengpost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ming is coming? Flash Gordon will kick his ass!
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Open source phones scare me. We have enough problems with people trying to "hack" their phones now as it is. Usually what happens is they come back to our service dpt saying, "I don't know what happened, but it doesn't make calls anymore". BITPIM and activation codes do not make you a phreaker.
If you want open source smartphones on the other hand, go for it. I love homebrew. - jezzball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but will it run linux?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i dont really like motorola but with linux it would be much better
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sorry, but: Yawnfest
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2***** yeah, let's hate on easy-to-use operating systems with a great GUI which admittedly do crash on occasion if you're doing too much ***** at once! You sure showed Microsoft with that CUTTING dollar sign, you corporate rebel, you!
- hersito, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3old news.
- xamox, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Yes, thank you for this. So many people I know have Razrs. Sure they are thin, but they are wide as *****. The design is slick but I have to agree with the software, that it's horrible. It took my buddy 10 minutes to find out how to turn on bluetooth so I could send him a file. I love my Sony Ericsson's interface, I think they did a really good job with it.
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1good to hear
i simply can not understand how a company like Motorola can make such terrible phones. all with the same terrible software. they have not innovated anything in a long time. they simply rehash the exterior and then put the same miserable failing software. - mrchin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I don't think mine is better. I've loved it but would say the iPhone's much better based on what I've seen. Internet and it's an iPod. Widescreen touch iPod!!!
- lowlevel, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2re: They need to do something, Motorola phones have the worst software humankind has ever seen. I have a Razr and in June we'll see if it'll blend!
Maybe I'll put it on You Tube.
Personally I feel that Sony/Ericsson phones have the worst software. I've always loved my Motorola phones. (I go through a lot of phones.. over 10 different models in the past 5 years.) Text entry is much faster on motorola anyway, as you can use the 0 key to step through 'guessed words' ... sony makes you use stupid slow menus with their dumb joystick. My T610 stinks. I hate it so much... its often faster to pull the battery out and start the phone up again than to go back through the menus to try and make a call. The phone is full of bugs too. Even the Q-bert game it came with reliably screws up. - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I think the Motorola E6 is more impressive than these 2. They go for 370-400 on ebay.

It also runs on the new Linux based OS. - joerod, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8I'll take any OS thats not M$ on my phone
