- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I just want my phone to place and receive calls. That's all.
I think I'm in the minority. - netmancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The Treo 650 is a decent email device, but ***** for a phone. I'm not referring to coverage (which was just as good as any other phone I had/have), but the actual phone itself. The volume control sucked, bluetooth sucked, and worse of all it missed calls. Someone would call the phone and it would not ring, or show a missed call, or notify you of a voicemail. I had several arguments with my boss before I just gave up a switched to a standard cell phone. It turned out that he got into trouble with his wife regarding this issue a couple days after I gave up the Treo :-). Out of about 20 people in my company to use the Treo 650, 5 dropped the thing completely, 10 bought another cell phone to accompany the Treo (it is a decent pda/email device), and the other 5 live with their issues. Not to mention that the damn thing freezes constantly, loses its configs, and requires almost daily reboots just to work properly.
I'm waiting for Cingular to catch up with the crowd and offer the 700p.. hopefully they fixed some of these issues. - test5477, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'll stick with the BBerry. I'll pass on the windows mobile.
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The review seems to mention some serious flaws, how is this "excellent"?
Without WiFi It's a carrier prision cell.
Bad OS makes it too hard to use.
Expensive plans keep it niche. - netmancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@BritOverseas: Wow bro, you're really defensive over the Treo 650. You want to talk about myths and what is or isn't true, but I'm just calling 'em like I sees 'em.
A simple google search for "treo 650" + issues found 6,870,000 results. Replace the word issues with the word lockup, and you'll see 172,000 results. "Hangs" = 413,000 results. Also, what about the lawsuit against Palm over said issues: http://www.mobiletracker.net/archives/2005/09/20/palm-sued-treo
It seems that I'm not the only one with issues.
Also to note: All of the Treos in my organization have the latest firmware and patches as released by our provider (Cingular).
Besides, most of my users don't have anything else installed on the Treo that didn't come with it or didn't come on the Treo's install disk. You shouldn't have to hold a degree in Engineering in order for this thing not to have issues. The target audience for these devices are for business people. The typical business person doesn't know CRAP about computing devices (at least outside of using email, documents, etc) and they shouldn't have to know more than what they need to use it.
I'm glad you're not having any issues with your Treo 650. But from what I've seen, you're the exception to the norm. But that doesn't matter because I think you're full of *****.
Oh, and just because your "missus" is having issues with her Windows phone doesn't mean it's crap. To quote you:
"I am sorry but this is just plain not true and will probably be down to incompatible 3rd party apps and plain old user error/RTFM." - TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Agreed, I had a Treo 600 for years and recently lost it (long story), I was going to pick up a 650 too but heard about the Q. Too bad Verizon has the exclusive for now, I have to wait till it comes out for sprint.
- Tonye5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't see a touch screen being mentioned anywhere. Tell me I'm wrong, the Q actually has no touch screen???!!!
It actually has the same lame blackberry input... it can't be???!!!! - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Too bad it is verizon. Worst customer service I have ever experienced, intentionally crippled bluetooth to force you to pay for their little phone internet service, and that stupid vcast thing, where you can pay to download and watch commericals on your cell phone. Not to mention voluntarily giving the NSA realtime access to customer records. As cool as this phone looks (it does look kinda cool), it is not worth dealing with verizon's *****.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want one of these so bad, I think that streaming video from something like Orb or slingbox would look pretty good on that screen. Lots of other nice features on this thing too. Whatever you think about Verizon, this is still probably one of the best phone/pda that they've ever come out with.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sounds nice, but maybe it's too little too late for Windows Mobile. I went through three WM5.0 phones, and I wanted to like it, I really did. After my Audiovox, I finally gave in and bought a Treo 650.
Every headache I had with WM is a non-issue with the Palm OS. I've been using it for music, videos, as a document reader, playing tons of games, and just got a TomTom GPS unit for it. I won't lie, I do get the occasional crash/restart, but absolutely NOTHING like I did with my Windows phones.
This phone looks slick, but there's no way I'm giving up my tried-and-tested Treo for what seems like basically a fashion phone. It doesn't even has a touch screen, does it? - Math-Sux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I use windows mobile 5 on a sprint 6700 and think it works great. Web, email and terminal services all do what I expect - work.
- flyindutchman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Reviews from magazines or mainstream sources are fluff. They have to give good reviews or they won't receive review models as easily. I will wait until there is a more independent review.
- tifosiv122, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"The 700p comes with Microsoft Office document editors (not just viewers), has a higher-res screen, runs on both Verizon and Sprint, and is both faster and less buggy than the Q. "
Sounds like a winner to me. Um, I'll pony up the extra $200 and get a non-buggy phone, the 700p. I had the 700w for 2 days, what a terrible OS. - unfinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We've been through this before - you're in the vast majority.
The point is, there still are people who see a benefit to using a device like the Q. - SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, it's most certainly not a glorified treo. One is Windows Mobile, one is Palm OS, both are completely different. I had high expectations for the treo 700, but after reading reviews for the windows version I held off on my purchase. The OS can make or break a smartphone, in the case of the 700w it, for the most part, broke it.
The one handed usability was pretty good (no stylus) on the 700w, but not perfect. And the OS itself used up too much memory, leaving other phone operations somewhat lagged. I expect the 700p to be praised more than the Q due to the OS itself. - digithed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too bad it's not a patch on competing phones from SonyEricsson (P990i) and Nokia (E61). Still it will probably do OK in USA where the carriers decide what phones you're allowed to use on their networks and probably won't sell the two better phones I mentioned, 3G is practically non-existent and phones are generally a couple of years behind the rest of the civilised world ;-)
- cybershoplifter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Lucky enough to have played with this phone and it is good. It will be the 1st phone that bb boys/girls could consider as an option. All it needs is 2-4 gigs of storage and a headphone jack.
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1M600i for me too, definatly over this. I'm holding off on an upgrade for that. I've had bad, neigh very bad experiences with Motorola, and being a Palm developer I know how crap the Palm OS is.
- zeeneo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nokia, Sony or Samsung... everything else sucks.
Looking forward to Sony Ericsson M600i
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/Sony_Ericsson_Announce_m600i_UIQ_Smartphone1.php - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apart from the form factor, the Q has features that have been available in Windows Smartphones for over a year (possibly more).
It depends on what you want, I lean towards maximum functionality with good ergonomics not great ergonomics with limited functionality like the Q. I'm sure it'll make quite a few people happy. - Phisolo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I read until the specs said "Windows Mobile Smart Phone". No Digg.
I'm a bit snobby about that. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1of course it's the "best verizon phone pc mag has ever tested!" robert heron's been drooling over this phone since before the day it even came out!
p.s. he must rave about dr pepper like he raves about this phone. robert heron is a dr pepper junkie! PRODUCT PLACEMENT! product placement everywhere!!! :( - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I definitly think Windows Mobile is better than Palm OS 5. Sure, Palm OS (ironically POS) has a lot of free software for it, but so does WM5. It is damn near impossible to get a Palm on the internet via a bluetooth enabled pc. I called palm tech support and they told me it was necessary to download some crappy software and set it up to use the comeputer as a gateway to the internet for palm. (I was using a Tungsten T3) They also wanted to charge me $20 for the support. With both an Axim x50 and an iPAQ 3975 I had no problems getting on the net via bluetooth enabled pc, and aas far as I know, The 2 largest WM5 makers (HP and Dell) both offer free tech support.
- Michael, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They've slowly started allowing Bluetooth services in their phones. You don't have to pay for vCast if you don't want, and Verzon did NOT give NSA access to customer records. They are one of the few that didn't.
- cybershoplifter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0touch screen works well, I was surprised
- Damhna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm running a 6700 here and everything works outstandingly well.
Have you applied your ROM update ? - blamanj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sad but true. The Q has no touch screen.
- HellishColt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there anything comparable to this that also has Wi-Fi? I heard that having multiple wireless formats is a real drain on batteries.
- deadhobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW, there is loads of freeware available of WinMo devices... I only use freeware on my PPC-6700, and it works great. A good site (WARNING: Set adblock to destroy) for WM freeware is http://freewareppc.com/
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, how is that "little to recommend it"? Those are some pretty big features.
This is NOT a review, it is a PR release. - Sean7341, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This is going to be awesome when it comes out for Verizon. I'm going to be the first one to get it. I've been waiting for this for awhile. I was going to get a Treo 650, but screw that now.
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -14/+13What the hell are you basing that assumption on???? (remember making assumptions makes an ASS out of U and ME)
Idiot.
I have a Treo 650, it works FLAWLESSLY. My Wife has an SDA, it barely works AT ALL!!!! Constantly switches itself to flight mode without being asked, turns its ringer off without being told to and when we took it back to T-Mo, they said this was NORMAL stuff for WinMo5, what ***** use is that?????
Trust me, the Missus sorely regrets selling her 650 now.
There are over 20,000 applications that work with the Palm OS, a lot of them are FREE, how does that compare to a buggy OS like WinMo5 where you have to PAY for EVERY app????
Besides, the Palm OS has been bought and is being ported to Linux, we will see "who" is the better mobile OS when the next version comes out. - BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"Also to note: All of the Treos in my organization have the latest firmware and patches as released by our provider (Cingular)."
And there in is your problem.
If you also use the word "Cingular" when you google your results, you will see that more than 75% of those "lock ups" were down to a faulty SIM card that Cingular issued with their phones, along with a bug with their set up and a "fetched" "set network time" command.
Yes, I do get a bit pissed off when somebody maligns a perfectly good product out of ignorance, just because a "few" uninformed people who don't know how to use a device like this in the first place, buy it and then whine "It doesn't work properly". Buy a ***** Chick/Crackberry for gods sake, they are ALMOST idiotproof but limited in their capabilities.
Oh, and by the way, that lawsuit, look for it to be kicked out VERY soon, yet more American Lawyers looking to make a quick buck.... - TechCoder, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7I was expecting something special looking based on the rumors about it.... Its just a glorified treo.
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@netmancer

I am sorry but this is just plain not true and will probably be down to incompatible 3rd party apps and plain old user error/RTFM.
I run everything and I mean EVERYTHING from one device with absolutely NO lock ups (apart from when I overclock it to play Mario Karts but that is my choice and is not a fault of the Treo itself) This includes, movies (320x240 full frame widescreen at 300KBPS or 320 x 320, same frame rate), games (emulators AND downloaded games), GPS, PDA, MP3 etc etc etc
The myths surrounding Treo lockups are just that, myths. Learn how to use your equipment, don't download "crapware" to it as you wouldn't with ANY computer if you wanted it to work properly and it will take care of you. I find it VERY hard to believe that 75/100% of your users had major problems with it, if so, where are the rest of the 75/100% of the demographic from other users that had the same problems?
Also, for every supposed problem that a Treo has, 99% of them are fixable by either downloading a FREE app or firmware fix, try that with a WinMo phone...
[crickets]
Exactly.
Oh, and by the way, I DO like the "Q", it is NOT better than the Treo but I do like it. I wish we would have waited and got the Missus it instead of the SDA, she likes Windoze too... - ThorbjorgX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Treo is so easy to use and simple, plus it delivers everything you'd ever need! It's allows you to view everything necessary from anywhere you can pick up a cell phone signal. What's not to like?
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -14/+12Actually, making a comment surmising that a whole operating system that MILLIONS of people use daily is "Old and Busted" and is not worth anything, IS being an idiot but we all have our opinions..
MS Fanboys sometimes get carried away with their overzealousness for the great Bill and his buggy products.
I too run MS for all of my PC's and it is not a bad OS but the mobile version is "Busted" to use his terminology, it does NOT work well and is prone to far more bugs than the Palm OS, "Old" or not.
And just for your info, the SDA bugs I am talking about are SDA specific with the WinMo 5 OS, just like the many OS problems that are manufacturer specific with XP PC's.
Not EVERY PC has the same bugs with hardware drivers, that is ludicrous to think because not all PC's have the same hardware even though they run the same OS. This is because of things called "Drivers" and phones have them too, don't you know anything about computers?
Oh, and really, "*****"? Not that I have never been called an ***** before but come on, is that the best you can do? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6But does it run Linux?
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1MOTO Blows MAJOR BAWLS!!!!!!!!!!! GET A TREO AND TYPE IN CAPS!!!!!!!
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -15/+10It's even worse than a glorified Treo, at least my Treo (600) has Palm OS onboard.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9@BritOverseas
You sound like you're trying to convince yourself, not us. Especially since you're enough of an ***** to call someone an idiot for stating their opinion.
All the issues your "Missus" is having seem to be phone issues and not OS issues, otherwise, every phone that runs windows mobile would report the same problem, and they don't. - JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2I went to PCMag.com and saw a banner ad for Pioneer. I searched for reviews of Pioneer and found this:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1965182,00.asp
They rated it very good.
Take what you want from that. - zoto, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6Palm OS is old and busted, As far as usability and compatibility are concerned windows mobile trumps palm every time.
