- HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -6/+208Me too. I never post any comments and such online.
- pjh3000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+57And the ones that do post comments think they represent a vast majority of the population. If most people had brain patterns like me, I'd be scared.
- yaddayadda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51
- Ascendant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30I think this was publshed by the same group that released that study that said "alcohol consumption makes women more likely to have sex"
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33thats insterting because on Digg i more often then not dont read the article but comment and respond to people's comments
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Translation: LURKERS
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16yeah because in most cases you have to sign up to comment and most people can't be arsed to do so.
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Indeed, I mean, think about it. If there were that many people who read but didn't comment then we'd know about them, right? right?
The number of page hits that a place like digg gets is severely out of proportion to the number of comments that show up for any given article. Even the number of diggs an article gets is higher than the number of comments, showing that different people have different comfort levels when it comes to on-line participation.
Aside from that, even, digg isn't your ordinary web site. News sites like msn, yahoo, etc don't really have the on-line participation functionality to allow people to say something even if they wanted to. - stoops, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Damn straight, who the hell would want to participate?
- arof, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16This is one of the few sites that lurkers like me have a big impact on. This is only the second time I've posted anything, but I've dugg up and down comments a whole bunch because it's only one click to give that little bit of input. It also saves me from being buried for posting an "I agree" reply.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16This and other shocking stories, all in this week's issue of DUH magazine.
- rrunboy12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12My silence has been broken (first Digg post in 2 months of reading stories!)
- Lindquist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10So this means the "Digg Effect" doesn't come from the 100 or so users that post comments on each story? (sarcasm)
- SilentPurity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This guy has one of the most valid points ever made on the digg.
- pyromithrandir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Am I the only one who thinks it is stupid for them to have a poll asking "Are you a 'Silent Surfer'?"
Obviously everyone who chose "Yes" is a liar. - Sababaaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I only post in maybe 10% of the stories I digg, and probably less in forums... Although I do catch myself reading a lot of the digg comments (I'm sure we can all agree that many times the dialog that develops can be much more interesting than the actual story), but I tend to catch the tail end of the discussion so I usually don't bother posting.
- Backlash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Most of the time when I comment I find that I ramble on and on about something completely unrelated. Perfect example of this is when I got pulled over by a cop last week. He asked for my drivers license and my proof of insurance. I told the officer that I didn't have my proof of insurance because I had only recently bought the car. He looked me over and asked if I had been drinking. I said no sir. I asked him why I was being pulled over and he said under the suspicion that I had been drinking. I asked had I been swerving and he replied, yes. Long story short, I told the officer it wasn't my gun or ecstasy and that I had never seen the prostitute before. He let me go with a warning.
- npodges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"thats insterting because on Digg i more often then not dont read the article but comment and respond to people's comments"
yeah, like most of the other readers here.
who needs an article, when you can just guess at the content? - MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+8Yeah, I didnt even sign up for digg until a few weeks ago and I've been a visitor for a year or more. There was no real incentive to sign up other than bookmarking the stuff that I like or 'digging' it that way when I tell ppl about it I can actually find the damn article because digg's search is seriously lacking...
I might have said too much. - mctk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah. A lot of times I just don't have anything substantial to contribute...
- Agraek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is very true for me. I was a lurker here for several months before I just signed up. Most of it is the laziness factor. I just don't feel like signing up. The same goes for many forums: I'm much more content just reading articles rather than posting them.
- kompleat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Exactly, what's the point of commenting if you don't have anything useful to say. I wish MORE people were lurkers!
- FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yes, anonymity can bring out the rotten side in people. It's like the Klan hiding under a hood. That's why it's good to have rating systems for comments.
I think democracy evens it all out. - obscurelyfamous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is such a ridiculous study. Of course the MAJORITY will not participate. The web user base is huge-- does anyone expect a large percentage to be blogging, forum-posting, podcasting degenerates of society?
- rmassie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7NO RLY? Sum X U 1337 haXorZ R so CLR.
It can be a bit intimidating for the uninitiated lurkers to show their faces. People are ruder, more cryptic, and the conversations are often less meaningful than face-to-face conversations. I could understand why most just avoid it. - jmazzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6In a bazaar twist, most people only watch TV and do not make movies or sitcoms......
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes I agree, I read 10000 more things than I post in some active forums. Also here on Digg as well.
- gmailgeoff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Me neither. Pretty much everything I'd want to say is said by someone else. If there's something special I feel they missed, I speak up and say it. ;) Who needs to post just to see their own post?
- Ralphy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I agree with yaddayadda.
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm happy with the percentage of surfers who contribute, I don't think I could handle much more than this.
- kochtravis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I also find myself reading the comments exclusively. I find that the information is not only more interesting, but the tangents are more useful.
Example:
Someone posts a link to a music site.
By the time the story reaches the main page, there have been a few posts like this: "Oh that site is good, but this site is better!"
More often then not, they are correct. - evilbreadbin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I was greatly amused to see the poll just below the article: "Are you a 'silent surfer'?" Anyone answering yes is of course lying!
- latour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it's true, the digg/comment ratio here at digg is like 20:1
- Daem0nX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If there was a set of rules for posting comments "Read only headline and short description, then post comment for story" would be the first in the list :)
Now I'll wait for someone to link to a page or quote a list of posting rules that prove me wrong. - bradisbest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wouldn't digging a story be considered participating?
- Kahnza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I usually don't comment on stuff either. The only time I comment is when I feel that I have something to contribute, or if I feel like being sarcastic/funny. Rarely get any laughs out of people though. :(
- rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Lurk Nation.
- mortal-god, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not bad, how do you feel about being eaten alive?
- Benjamingt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I usually lurk, but now I'm speaking out!! And now, I seem to have forgotten why. But hey, at least I'm not passive!
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good, because if it gets like slashdot, it's not even worth posting. ;)
- n3xu5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Damn lurkers!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They needed "new research" to know this? Of course, its obvious.
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In related news, researchers also discovered most female web users won't go out with me, greatly increasing my online participation on a Friday night.
- Ralphy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ok, how would you like me to kill you? I suggest burried alive.
- tr0gd0rr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am discovering that adding meaning to the web is not hard, just rare. There are so many thoughtless comments and contributions on the web. I think "Tasteful Contributors" is a better epithet than "Lurkers."
- mrlost117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2but, you really are passive... just not now
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good to hear. I hate it when innocent mistakes go punished injustly.
- isny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That would be the group that put out the results that said that "alcohol consumption makes men think that women more likely to have sex with them"
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's probably true. This is one of the few sites where I'll comment on something.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Woohoo I stand out in the crowd and not just for my acne!!!
