- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10You could help them by not posting it again on digg....
- fireflyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4LOL Check it out, from their page:
"Looks like someone dugg *this* page now to see if the servers will hold.
Someone thinks they are funny, eh? :) hah" - digitalpoint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah... well the server that went down (only for about 30 seconds) averages 1,000 http (php) hits per second 24/7, and the db server it was using already was averaging 1,500 queries per second. So you couple what's already a little strained, with the front page digg coming at the busiest time of the week (8am on Monday), plus the shear traffic digg threw at it (and the page being a dynamic page with a decent number of queries to build it), it didn't work out.
It would have been fine if it wasn't already serving such a massive amount of requests before the digg users.
The servers needed to be upgraded anyway... this was just a push that made me get around to initiating it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, digitalpoint is a forum with an Alexa ranking of 316. You probably know how much load forums take, and one as highly trafficked as digitalpoint is not gonna take a digg as easily as those puny sites of yours.
- ddrirc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5$100,000?! I'm no server expert, but from the sounds of their stats they don't need NEAR that much -- or am I wrong?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Could we interest you in at least spelling the title of your story right?
- zezak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Effect," not "Affect."
- shoemoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Digitalpoint rules!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Hmm... one of my sites has had the digg effect several times, it's a single dedicated server and it costs 200 bucks a month, and it runs several sites at once... talk about overkill, 100k$, "Come On!" (Gob Bluth)
- Floodle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the MOST expensive digg effect is the lost time due to the addictive effect it has on people. We could be doing more productive things instead - not as interesting though.
And $100,000 for new servers? do you really need the gold plated ones?, also why is a commercial site (one that sells stuff) asking for donations?. Would my donation also help feed undernourished children and rescue stray cats? - T0PS3O, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It will be hosting the non-commercial parts. The community stuff like the forums and the free tools that helped thousands of people make boat loads of money. Hence there's already nearly 5 grand raised in under 24 hours. Poeple who made a small fortune from using the community tools don't mind donating 500 dollars. And they get a quiality link as well.
- cbdgr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2from the title of this i thught it was gona be someone with a hosting servers per mega byte or something
- zedomax, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1They should use a lighter web server like Lighttpd, that will cut the bills down in half, details here:
http://zedomax.com/blog/2009/10/14/wordpress-hack- ...
Not trying to promote but trying to help out, this is my donation, "optimize your server" and save like $50K. - T0PS3O, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apparently, there's a bug in MySQL that leaks memory. The server as is would have stood up against the Digg mass if not MySQL had cocked it up. I was the one posting that Digg story on the Rigged Online Poker which surprisingly made it to the homepage and finished off the MySQL server.
The tools used on that site have a huuuuge following so it does get a lot of traffic actually. 10 Blades should cover it for the next 48 months :)
When the new servers are in place, let's get a Digg + SlashDot + all the other ones simultaneously and see how it goes. - ViciousSummer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Posted by o0unixo0:
"A commercial company is asking for money then come tax time he is going to write it off."
So you can accept donations and then write it off? Hmmmm...If that's what you're doing, let me know how prison's treating you... - T0PS3O, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3100 grand worth of servers = expensive cutting edge technology. Post is about cutting edge technology to remedy potential Digg effects and traffic increase in general. Post is in Technology category. How can that not be related? It's not about making the front page. But heck, I didn't post this so I don't care what the motives are. But to say it's not related is BS. But I guess because your Fibre Super Car was 125 grand it makes it more relevant hey?
- JimW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Digitalpoint rules!!"
Yes!! - Caydel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Because you seem to like redundancy, and dislike reading comments already left, let me quote TOPS30s comment above:
"It will be hosting the non-commercial parts. The community stuff like the forums and the free tools that helped thousands of people make boat loads of money. Hence there's already nearly 5 grand raised in under 24 hours. People who made a small fortune from using the community tools don't mind donating 500 dollars. And they get a quality link as well."
These free forums and tools have helped hundreds or thousands of people make a crap load of money. It is the strain of hosting these forums and tools which is causing the server to die. It is not the activities of DigitalPoint's business. I believe that the actual business probably contributes at most 2%-3% of the load.
Without new servers, DigitalPoint will not be able to offer the tools so many of us use daily, and value highly. While personally, I am not in a position to contribute, I applaud highly those that do contribute, and support our community. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The reason Shawn has raised so much so quickly is because of how much has been made because of his free tools. Tens of thousands for a LOT of people and in the hundreds for some. Not to mention how much has been made as a direct result of advice in the support forum.
It is ridiculous to say he should take the money out of his pocket from his other ventures like his billing software or affiliate sites. I don't care how much he is worth, people donate because they profit from his free tools. If each person that used his tools gave 25 cents, it would be $100,000...a small price to pay.
I suppose there are people who think he should have just milked the tools users from the beggining (as in the examples given) - samsam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If Shawn wants more money, he can easily make more money, by making his tools, and coop and parts of the forum paid, just like some other forums have done. He has done a great job in the forums. The forums advertising in itself is shared with the forum members. What else can you expect.
- tennix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There is something wrong about a company asking for donations when you know the business is making tons of cash because of the traffic. There are many free services out there and you don't see those companies asking for money to help build their business so that they make more money. Why not reinvest back into the business, like the rest of us trying to grow? I guarantee you that they are not hurting for money. Yes, they claim that their business is programming and software, etc, but let's face the reality that his services allow for the traffic to his sites and you know he is not complaining about the adwords money in his checking account. He's no doubt a millionaire already.
- busta24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey just bought new servers for over 80k!
- Damnz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1IMO, these servers did/still do alot better for DigitalPoint and they were worth ever penny ;)! I'm glad Shawn got them.
- Damnz @ http://damnz.wordpress.com - noppid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article opened my eyes to the potential of Digg traffic.
Thanks for posting. - o0unixo0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1So let me get this correct.
A commercial company is asking for money then come tax time he is going to write it off.
Isn’t that like apple or Google asking for money to buy something?
I read the fundraiser page and from the sounds of it sounds like he acts like some one is making him pay for it which I don’t feel is the case.
I feel that any commercial company should be able to stand on there own two feet and not ask for hand outs.
Please forgive me if I am wrong in what I have said but it’s what I see. - mwmw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I've dervived much benefit from DigitalPoint for FREE. Accordingly, I've ponied up for this fundraiser and consider it money well spent.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1DigitalPoint does rule!!!! http://www.dotdesk.com
- tarball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You probably want something a bit faster than 15 RPM, maybe a 1000 times faster! :-)
- MichaelGoldman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2shall we digg this to the homepage? ;)
- MichaelGoldman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0interesting
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2So what's the point of this post? he wants to make it another time to the front page? is this what it's all about...i don't see anything related in this post to any category of digg, i just see it as a an advertisement post..reported.
- dcte, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Sure, can you tell me how to edit it please.
- slackerjack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Perhaps they don't NEED that much now. But why not plan for the future? If you are going to go in... might as well go all in so they don't kicked off the internet again.
- cbdgr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1mmm i want 3 tb of 15rpm, drives, perfect for my torrents
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I've heard that digg is being bought by Yahoo! Can someone confirm???
Just kidding :D

What is Digg?
