- bludragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The original outage was planned emergency maintenance downtime for the WHOLE BUILDING not just Dreamhost:
It was discovered by ABM Engineering during the power monitoring
equipment installation, that a Phase C Conductor Cable on UPS #4
has been compromised to the point that immediate action to
repair it is necessary or a ground fault will occur to the building
systems.
The above was a 3 hour repair window for the whole building, which was followed by a Dreamhost core router problem which took approximately another 2-3 hours to restore full service to all 350K+ hosted sites.
This was not a simple cable problem [see above]; it was a planned downtime which was announced 3 days ago. Anyone hosted on Dreamhost has full access to their rss feed which gave ample warning of this downtime, which was planned [I would guess] for a Saturday night for minimum impact.
And, for the record, Dreamhost is a shared hosting provider with no SLA. Folks who need more redundancy should host elsewhere.
Dreamhost is completely upfront about their downtime and interruptions, and I have found them to be very responsive. I have no complaints after over 6 years with them. - screenwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4BTW the number of web sites (350K+) was taken from this DreamHost web page:
http://www.dreamhost.com/aboutus-ourpast.html - CaptainBlue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There's a difference between a server responding to pings and the web sites on it actually serving pages.
Full service has still not been restored. - doctechnical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Think of the bright side - for all that time 350,000 web sites were carbon neutral.
- Elias1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My sites have been going on and off for the past 2 hours.
- chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My site is up.
DreamHost has been extremely reliable (even when they had power issues last summer) in my experience. For shared hosting, they can't be beat, they really can't. Their support has been stellar too.
Not to mention, thanks to referrals, I haven't had to pay for my hosting in 2 years. - chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2midphase beats them hard, imo.
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My site is fine... it has been for a little while now. I'm still laughing at the people who use cheap ass hosting with them knowing that they have a bad rep that are whining about how much money they have lost on their business sites. I have a personal site... if I was making mad cash, I think that I would be picking someone a bit more reliable and dedicated! However, I just have a regular blog, no money making stuff on it, no adsense or any of that *****- so I'm not losing anything.
- screenwalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Currently it's still a bumpy ride
Sites are still timing out or are not reachable from time to time... - screenwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just checked our web statistics for today. It shows the first successful connection serving a web page for 6:38 PST
- realdcurtis, on 06/03/2009, -1/+2All for a stupid power cable? Why couldn't someone just stick their finger in there and move it out of the way?
We have seran wrap, grape jelly, and duct tape. Surely that doesn't require 8 hours to fix. - pwris16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mine are back down
- CaptainBlue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A number of sites are still down and haven't been up all day.
- kenwestin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29 Hours. Wow did they take the day off?
- spyka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My websites have been down since around 7am GMT, still down now, at 4pm, and no signs of anything happening...
- chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's almost 12pm EST, and I'd estimate that half of them are still down.
- screenwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The post linked from this Digg now has another update with the list of server names still not reachable.
It looks like they are almost done now... - kenwestin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+111 hours
- kenwestin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+110 hours
- screenwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More than 650 comments now at the "DreamHost status page"
People have started to report all sites that are still not up properly at that page.
Go to the "DreamHost status page" ( http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2007/02/25/power-outage-update/#comments )
and write a comment if your site is not fully up and running… - screenwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1-- The Digg Mafia hit again and buried this post ---
Surprise, Surprise there are 3 links to the dreamhost comment page with "historic" info - just pointing to the announcement 2 days ago - continuing being digged now instead.... - AmnestyGenocide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fedora + firewall + Plesk (control panel for customers) + DSL + 8 hour ups power backup ($200) + 1 hosting customer = 100% uptime/300GB/full control -- only $40/month (profit)

- jelena, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is really a nightmare. Such a large company cannot allow something like this to happen. I can't imagine 350k+ angry customers and how they are going to deal with them, including me.

- splorch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Yeah trichnosis, I tried yours. Mine is down too (http://www.sheilad.com). Dreamhost claims that it should be up and is not part of a system-wide problem. Uh huh. Makes a lot of sense.
