- GuineaPig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This sort of innovation is unparalleled. Is there anything Google can't do?
- motorbikematt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Drop box isn't a good idea. A better idea would be to activate the existing:
Web Images Groups News Froogle Local Scholar
links so that when you have your query typed in the search box, clicking upon these links will institute the search...instead of taking you to that specific search's page. - fbriggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I suggested this exact change to Google's Craig Silverstein 2 months ago when they visited my college (Harvey Mudd in California,) for a job fair. At the time, he seemed to like the idea and said that it would be a good customization option for the personalized page.
- Forrest Briggs - dayquil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i don't see how this is more efficient. currently all you have to do is click one of the links to different search types and the search is executed. pulldowns, while space-saving and reasonably attractive, generally just add an extra unnecessary click. I would have preferred to just see them make those ugly links into pretty buttons.
- Porgie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Who cares. Google censoring information to kowtow to the Chinese makes me sick. Screw them!!!
- motorbikematt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To be clear.... the News link already behaves like this, it will run the search query in the Google News page immediately upon clicking it. They should do that for the rest of them.
- masterdebater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's easier? Stop playing around with the GUI and really make it faster for everyone, by doing something like this:
news:Canada Election - directs to "news.google.com" and searches for "Canada Election"
image:Flowers - directs to "images.google.com" and searches for "Flowers"
video:Backstreet Boys - directs to "video.google.com" and seaches for "Nsync"
hehe just kidding, want to see if you are all awake still...
But you get my drift - buttons don't make things faster, keep it to command line and people will learn and learn it actually is faster in the long run. - osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A dropdown box? NO WAY!!!!! Again, I apologize for the stuck caps-lock key, and apparently my finger just kept hitting the exclaimation marks. digg? This isn't news, this is lame.
- gprentice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2dropdown menus are efficient only with small lists
- jaym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think checkboxes as in a9.com would give more flexability to the search.
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You... you blog when... you blog when google adds a combo box to the front page?
Seriously? - NekstBestThing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dude Spam lol.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont like the drop down, i like simplicity on the site.
- Netweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This service called Google Suggest has been around for over 14 months
http://labs.google.com//suggestfaq.html Bttom of Screen Copyright 2004 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm giving my digg for you using Vista + Firefox + Greesemonkey in one screenshot...... me likey
as for this new interface, i agree with motorbikematt that it would be alot better if you clicked on which site search you wanted - fishgeekva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg effect
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i like this, i hate having to type out an excessive url for random pictures
- Crazen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Geez, digg is turning into a giant google ad.
It's a drop down instead of links, geez. give it a rest. - crash331, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont like it. it adds one extra click to search another area of google.
- Thezeppelin62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait ive got a question. as I can see as that guy took a screen shot of it. Why does like everybodys Windows XP, toolbars and windows look like so much more sleek than mine? I just got all the updates and everything? please email the answer. Thezeppelin62@gmail.com
I want my Windows XP to look like that :( - froz3ntear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How does it add an extra click? To get to images, i have to click on images then search, to get videos, i search "videos" on google to get to the video page. This drop down menu is a nice touch, but how does it handle advance features (size, filter, etc).
looks good too me. - skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I suggested this exact change to Google's Craig Silverstein 2 months ago when they visited my college (Harvey Mudd in California,) for a job fair. ah...me too - wyngnut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Like how he blurred out his porn links. And that "Personal" folder, yeah whatever.....
- squenix1221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well, it give you access to some of the other google pages (video, scholar, books...) without having to click that god damn more button
- mfelkins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It probably saves a click altogether seeing as how I'd imagine you can just the the tab button to access the dropdown menu and then select whichever, either by clicking or typing the first letter of the word (News=N), and then hitting enter to search. I dont' know. I haven't had it pop up, but it seems likely.
+digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This would suck. It's more clicks to select the drop down box and find the correct filter. They should keep the top links they have now and make them work more like Altavista's tabs where when you have a search term filled in and then click one of the tabs it brings up your results. Drop downs are fugly anyway.
- spunkz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Whoever invented drop down boxes should be undugg for eternity.
- ejwettstein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1See -- http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en -- it has been around for a while.
- jtrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like it. It keeps the interface cleaner. Anyway I hate going to an entirely different web page to get another search type.
- nahtanin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've seen this once or twice, too, but I always thought it was caused by a newly-updated extension or something along those lines (which, in retrospect, really doesn't make any sense).
Not too sure I like it, though. :/ - gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To paraphrase Magus from Chrono Trigger, I once thought that Google's limited feature tests were faked pages...but I was another person then.
http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=136654&cid=11415858
Think before calling this a possible fake. - bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could easily be faked. And if they changed the links into a dropdown menu, that would mean you have to select news, then search for something just to get to the Google News frontpage. That's not very efficient.
- twstokes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had the EXACT same page show up for me the other day. Definitely NOT a fake. I didn't take a screenshot though, and I should have. The interesting thing was, I kept refreshing Google's homepage and it kept showing up, but as soon as I signed out of Google and cleared my cookies it magically disappeared. Very interesting.
- fritts1227, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ive had the drop down list for at least a week... doesnt go away either. Ive already got used to it.
- xpgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh thats awesome. I hope they go with that change.
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+110 bux says he blurred out the pr0n
- ieowqw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Image mirror: http://i1.tinypic.com.nyud.net:8090/mtwmz4.png
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This would be dumb. The addition of one click and also not showing which links are available is dumb. Also, a dropdown box is not newsworthy.
- mousky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is getting out of hand. Do we have to be made aware of each and every beta test or minor change at Google? What next? Will people be posting when Google renovates their offices? Google is constantly testing all of their products. Must be a slow tech news day.
- gayle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And if they changed the links into a dropdown menu, that would mean you have to select news, then search for something just to get to the Google News frontpage. That's not very efficient."
my guess is that you can still go directly to news.google.com. Whether this is more or less attractive is debatable, but what this does mean is that you can change the selected search type *without* navigating to a new page. - obscurelyfamous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Google throws out some table scraps and the internet public just eats it up.
So they added a droplist? Holy moly. - dhoefler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@steal_apps01
Actually it is real. I hate to break it to you. I've been getting the same thing since Dec 22nd.
http://davidhoefler.com/blog/index.php?title=google_s_main_page_something_different&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 - digitaldivider, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ooh. I like it.
- riah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dropdowns would help the casual internet user out with searching, but most of us already get it. So, it would be a good change for a default.
- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Freakin idiots it's called photoshop, you actually bellive this loser.
- compugeek2001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's A nice little feature. The Delete Button in Gmail and this (supposed) upcoming search feature make for a more efficient user experience.
- NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"funny how people post all these "changes" but they never show up for anyone.
Also google has a special pic for today and wheres that in his screenshot.
FAKE"
First off, he said that it was a couple days ago. Also, I've seen this (probably mon or tue last week), but haven't been able to make it show up again either. Who knows why... - dhoefler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Here I meant:
http://davidhoefler.com/blog/index.php?title=google_s_main_page_something_different&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 - jmonw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I like that! My only wish is that the search text box would still be centered, but then there's really no good place for the drop-down. Overall, though, I'd say it was an improvement.
