- LANjackal, on 07/14/2009, -1/+23What is with the international obsession with 3 Strikes Laws. Get over it already, governments.
- AmnesiacJack, on 07/14/2009, -0/+11I can't wait people are going down dark alleyways to meet an underground internet dealer.
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8I'm not sure Key and National will last long if they keep making these unpopular decisions. Most of National's base isn't too happy with him sucking the Maori party's collective dicks, and they won't win any Labour votes by pushing through laws like these.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/14/2009, -1/+8While I have nothing to say about jailing pirates, I think three strikes is only a good idea if your goal is to crowd your prisons with people who don't belong in them, which often makes non-violent offenders into worse people than they were before.
- twentyonexnine, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7Wow all this piracy stuff must really affect you personally. Why else would you go shouting in every related article?
- Spire3660, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7So its ok for large companies to BUY law? You do realize that is what is happening right?
- reevolutn, on 07/14/2009, -2/+7Dont be a dick
- Spire3660, on 07/14/2009, -1/+5People like something they can relate to. 3 strikes 'sounds' fair, i mean it is in baseball right? IN reality this is your money from buying consumer products being put to work AGAINST you through lobbying. COpyright is a SOCIAL contract, and I think its time to start rewriting the terms in OUR favor, not companies. My right to culture exceeds your right to reconfigure ideas (from millenia of human existance) for profit indefinately. No art is made from the void.

Stand and fight for your rights. Here and now. - CandidateZero, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3With a name like GaltShrugged, I take it you're a Randist. While she was capitalist, she also said government-assisted capitalism is "the worst of all economic phenomena," which is what the "pirate agenda" primarily targets (RIAA, MPAA, etc).
Rand also never addressed the very real problem of greed, relegating it to only the public's misunderstanding of what motivates rich business types. Her protagonists were easy to like because all had high integrity, but that's not how the natural selection of power works. It's the greediest, most slippery businessmen, unrestrained by moral ideals, who win, since they're free to do anything to get where they want. Monopolies, too, were just fine by her. But this system isn't perfect and as such, monopolies are too often government-protected or assisted, and kill the market.
In my view, file-sharing is a self-regulating market force. When CDs were surpassing $20 a pop, all while manufacturing costs were declining -- essentially price-gouging -- file-sharing brought it back down to a sane price. I think a laissez-faire approach is best when dealing with the media market, file-sharing or otherwise.
P.S. ***** THE RIAA! (and its member labels) - ethanji22, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4@Galt... When someone hacks your connection 3xs it will be great that we will never see you here again and just remember that you supported it....
- CSFFlame, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Copyright Tribunal? wtf happened to the legal system
- davewelsh79, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2@turnuon
Just because something is illegal doesn't make it wrong. Why don't you answer HIS question instead of asking another question? - dawnraid101, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Who said anything about prison?
BTW our prisons are dangerously overpopulated as it is. - skit4king, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2As a New Zealander, it's not looking like a great country to live in anymore, time to move to somewhere (Australia?) with better:
- ISP's
- mobile providers
- technology (in general)
- government
- roads
- tax rate - Spanca, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Fred: Try reading the article next time, or having the slightest clue about the topic. None of these 3 strikes proposals have ever been about jail, it's about disconnecting pirates by forcing ISPs to become internet cops.
- turnuon, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Calling file sharing is a self-regulating market force is such a arrogance statement. It does lower the price of products that has a digital form. But if anything, it's because there are people still paying for those products in the first place, otherwise there won't be anything for us to "share".
- davewelsh79, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1My argument didn't have any hidden meanings, just that you shouldn't think something is wrong simply because it is illegal.
I also took offense to the dismissing of his point simply because he raised an objection in the form of a question.
I think it's quite clear that these laws are being purchased by big companies. Laws extending copyright seem to be going against the intent of copyright law: to promote creation of new art. They are put into place by misguided politicians who are lobbied (read "bribed") by the content industry. - borez, on 07/14/2009, -2/+3Wrong answer on this site mate.
- ialan2, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I can't help but think that even if this proposal passes it won't be enforced. Our courts are too soft.
There have been two murder cases where the accused have been found not guilty.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bain
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_and_Cru_Kahui_m ...
I find it hard to believe that the same justice system that found these two murders not guilty would charge and prosecute an internet user for file sharing
/my 2 cents - otbeverly, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2As an American, I'd like to say ***** you for being a dick to the Kiwis, too.
- turnuon, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Pirating is right? What age are we in now, the age of self-entitlement? I would like to see more arguement from you.
That was a question? Companies BUYING law? Proof? Any proof, no proof? Are you treating that question seriously beyond a statement pulled out from the ass? - dawnraid101, on 07/14/2009, -2/+2As another New Zealander, I would like to give another big ***** You to you too.
- PhillyOC, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Maybe I shouldn't have been a dick?
I should probably go ***** myself now... if you'll excuse me. - FredFredrickson, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1Well, I read "3 strikes" and just assumed that's what it meant. Could be wrong, I guess, eh?
- catvllvs, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0Australia is looking at doing the same. Mind you, with the new filter about to be put in place torrent web sites will be some of the first blocked (illegal content etc)
I'm trying to get together a core group of people to form a new party to get a senator each from NSW, QLD, and Vic in at the next federal election (may be soon if the senate blocks a few more bills!)
It's about creating laws that work and rather than favouring bullies with money to lobby politicians.
The only way we can stop them is by using the system. Let's kick them in coin purse and take away votes.

It's going to be hard work but well worth it. - record200, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0"wtf happened to the legal system"
Free countries with free sharing are running out.
I am so sorry for the younger generation who will have to live in the copyright world.
The free BBS culture based on the scientific ideas of free knowledge and free exchange of ideas will soon cease to be so or silenced.
In case you have not read this http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/right-to-read.html - visionaryIX, on 07/14/2009, -3/+2As someone from New Zealand: ***** you.
Over 80% of our population uses the Internet, so thats nearly 3.5 million people. - turnuon, on 07/14/2009, -2/+1Why don't you answer his question instead of asking another question? Pirating is illegal, and the fact that we all do it doesn't make it okay. You are targeting people who try to protect themselves from a problem that we caused? Why don't you solve the first question first instead of making statement out of your ass?
- FredFredrickson, on 07/14/2009, -9/+3It doesn't affect us personally, but it affects us professionally and otherwise.
I'm a creative person, and piracy devalues my work. I can't get behind it for that reason.
Also, piracy is the reason why big government is coming down on the internet. If people weren't downloading a hundred albums a day, the government wouldn't be sticking its nose into the internet and trying to regulate it as much. It's a double-edged sword. - pathouston22, on 07/14/2009, -11/+3What is with the international obsession with breaking the law? Get over it already, people.
- PhillyOC, on 07/14/2009, -16/+3So this means that all 12 people in New ***** Zealand who actually know how to use bit torrents won't be affected at all?
How is this front page? Who gives a rat's ass? - GaltShrugged, on 07/14/2009, -25/+1Good. Pirates deserve to get kicked the ***** off the internet.
***** THE PIRATE BAY.
