- 6minuteabs, on 08/14/2009, -3/+49I love using Mint, but it still scares the hell out of me every time I use it. I know people say that it can be more secure than keeping Quicken files on your local PC waiting to get exploited, but it just doesn't feel right that one startup company with little track record has that much access to ALL of my finances.
Then I forget about it and go back to remembering how much I like using Mint. - Cable, on 08/14/2009, -1/+16I would use mint if they'd support my local credit union that I have asked them multiple times to support over the past 2 years.
- Hodor, on 08/14/2009, -4/+19bring it to canada.
- uptown, on 08/14/2009, -0/+10I love how they describe my Equinox Gym Membership as "Charity".
Based on how often I go, it's about right. - greensky, on 08/14/2009, -1/+9Yeah, I can't bring myself to use it for that reason. It's just to scary to give them potential access to all that information.
- mephitix, on 08/14/2009, -0/+7Mint doesn't have direct access to your finances -- they're basically just a pass-through to the actual service, which is Yodlee. Yodlee's been around for 10-something years and they have ridiculous logical and physical security. They're also audited by federal agencies every month. You're also only liable for $50 if you report any fraud within two days. Given that Mint is on the iphone, etc. and with their awesome 'Unusual activity' alerts the risk is somewhat low.
- drivingalone, on 08/14/2009, -0/+6I enjoy your shtick, syntaxgs. Keep up the good work.
- rpieszak, on 08/14/2009, -1/+5I love Mint, the concept is great, but sometimes their support (both direct contact and forums) really sucks. Most accounts/connections work, but the ones that don't have been lingering for a while, and there is very little feedback on the progress being made, if any.
Edit: to clarify, I don't expect constant updates on their development progress, but they try to portray a small-company, personal service mentality, and their sporadic support contradicts that. Just sayin'. Clearly hasn't been enough to drive me away, I use it religiously and I continue to wait somewhat patiently for the fixes. - AmusedToDeath, on 08/14/2009, -0/+4As a small business owner who has suffered the pain of being ass-raped by Intuit with poor support and forced upgrades for the last decade, anything that will put them out of business is fine by me.
- rpieszak, on 08/14/2009, -1/+4Yes, avoid online transactions of any kind. Probably a good idea. Let me know how that works out for you.
- tradderjohn, on 08/14/2009, -1/+4Mint raises 14 million dollars to help it beat MS Money ?
- Hodor, on 08/14/2009, -1/+4and give up my socialized medicine? No way!
- MrMeikel, on 08/14/2009, -2/+5and uk
- jgray1975, on 08/14/2009, -0/+2I like Mint, but wish they would add the ability to put in transactions before they post to the bank.
- Alamei, on 08/14/2009, -0/+2I haven't really looked into Mint because I'm still just not comfortable having all of my transactions stored on a remote server. Beyond the obvious privacy issue, if, at any point, the company folded, I could potential lose all the information I have entered. (I keep copies of my home data files backed up on several computers and in a safe deposit box.)
- 6minuteabs, on 08/15/2009, -0/+2@kavaliro- by the looks of the screenshots and guessing how many people actually use this, the "stable" version isn't much better.
It's not a swipe at the developers. Kudos to them. But it has to be tough to be motivated to build a great product that is 1) 10 years behind what Intuit has and Microsoft abandoned and 2) appears to be little more than a free replacement. Simply commoditizing successful software is not a sexy assignment for a dev. It's why OpenOffice can't get over the hump either. - akatsuki, on 08/14/2009, -0/+2Yeah, like citifinancial auto - known problem for months if not a year+, but they still list it as being supported which it is not.
I have gotten not-helpful replies from them, which is at least a reply. - DCstewieG, on 08/14/2009, -0/+2They do remind about bills, check your preferences...
- RodEffect, on 08/14/2009, -0/+2given they've already beaten them, I guess they can have an epic party with the remaining cash?
- MrAwesomeMan, on 08/14/2009, -0/+2The only thing I see is credit card bill alerts. I want to be able to input all of my bills along with due dates and have it remind me, similar to what BillQ does.
- gnaihc, on 08/14/2009, -0/+2On top of that, several "real" banks are using exactly the same system for their online banking. See here http://www.yodlee.com/customerspartners_cu.shtml
- yugnats, on 08/14/2009, -0/+2I am in Canada and use https://money.strands.com/ and so far its been excellent.
It's the only free online service I could find that uses TD Canada Trust AND RBC. - furto, on 08/14/2009, -2/+3and Australia
- inactive, on 08/14/2009, -0/+1We got you obamaed er i mean covered we'll be socialized by the first of the year ;-)
- r00fus, on 08/14/2009, -0/+1I bet the average person does own a car that's worth $28.5k... key word being "own".
Payments = do not own. - havek23, on 08/14/2009, -0/+1haha oh yeah... true.
- 6minuteabs, on 08/14/2009, -0/+1From the front page of GnuCash.org. No thank you-
"WARNING WARNING WARNING - Make sure you make backups of any files used in testing versions of GnuCash in the 2.3.x series. Although the developers go to great lengths to ensure that no data will be lost we cannot guarantee that your data will not be affected if for some reason GnuCash crashes in testing these releases.
PLEASE TEST TEST AND TEST SOME MORE" - r00fus, on 08/14/2009, -0/+1Unless you don't use credit/debit cards, your information is already on remote servers. Sure, it's aggregated, but a wise criminal or evil govt contractor can easily pull that data together with your superkey, the SSN.
Mint/Yodlee just makes that aggregated data pulled together so at least you can benefit along with the banks, scammers and govt blackops who already do. - MovieBlog, on 08/14/2009, -1/+2So from this, perhaps we can determine the average net worth of a mint.com user:
47 Billion in Assets / 1.4 Million Users
= $33,571 in Assets / User
That got me wondering about the average net worth of Americans in general...

Got any sources for that? I use yodlee to track my current account and main credit card, but thus far have not given them access to my investment accounts. I can only find references to semi-annual audits and nothing about a $50 liability limit.
http://yodlee.com/security_se.shtml - stutimandal, on 08/14/2009, -1/+2Buxfer rocks too :)
- Treshnell, on 08/14/2009, -1/+2I have the exact same problem. My credit union's even gone as far as to develop their own in-house version to provide many of the same features. I'd just use that, but it's still in the works..
- FreddieD, on 08/14/2009, -1/+2I cannot tell if you are being serious or not.
- Nishnabotna, on 08/14/2009, -0/+1Are we talking about Linux Mint?
- philz, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1I need a RSS feed or something for syntaxgs' comments! Pure gold!
- banderwocky, on 08/14/2009, -0/+1I wish it worked in Canada.
- DatruKatalyst, on 08/15/2009, -0/+1Mint is free.
- NoSalt, on 08/14/2009, -0/+1Thanks for the info ... downloading it now.
- yugnats, on 08/16/2009, -0/+1no
- kavaliro, on 08/14/2009, -0/+1That's simply telling you to stay away from the unstable development version and stick with the stable release version, unless you are adventurous AND have backed up your files. I'm not seeing a problem. Just use the stable version.
- Nishnabotna, on 08/19/2009, -0/+1Oh... OK.
- spectre_25gt, on 08/14/2009, -1/+2That's either a bad joke or you shouldn't be allowed on the internet.
- mezzthepezz, on 08/14/2009, -1/+1Now if only it was available for Canadians...
- beautifulbeast, on 08/14/2009, -2/+2Bring it to Europe.
- Paal, on 08/14/2009, -2/+2pardon me?
- MrAwesomeMan, on 08/14/2009, -1/+1I love Mint, but wish they would add bill pay feature, or at least a bill reminder feature. Then it would be perfect.
- enantiodromia, on 08/14/2009, -2/+26/10!!!
- syntaxgs, on 08/14/2009, -5/+5it work so far
