- spokenrope, on 10/11/2007, -0/+70"That's a ***** of torrents!"
Perhaps a... "torrent" of torrents? - Jerky1312, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39That's a ***** of torrents!
- Flipsen, on 10/11/2007, -4/+38"Downloading illegal apps, games, music and movies amounts to stealing and cheating."
Not really, when I download music/apps/whatever, I COPY, not steal it.
That's an important difference. - pianomahnn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24"If you really respect a software developer or love an artist, why not pay for their work?"
Many do, by GOING TO CONCERTS. How many times does it need to be said that the artists make a minute percentage off the sale of a CD? Oh, and software is just too damned expensive. It's the market's way to saying "charge less, you greedy bastards." - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Nothing strange ... torrents are more and more popular.
- szembek, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Use the ***** [reply] button.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Glad that i helped them reach that mark!
- joper90, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I laugh at you.. poke it.
That was a serious answer in a digg thread about torrents.. heh - jason469, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9People don't want to pay because 90% of the time a CD only has like 4 or 5 good tracks. If the RIAA lowered the prices on CD's more people would buy CD's. The more the music industry forces crap on the end user (DRM and so on) the more the people will look for alternative ways of getting what they want without the crap. Apple is making progress by giving users DRM-Free songs, but not everyone is willing to dish out a little more just for DRM-Free music from iTunes when they can just go Mininova and not pay anything.
- mb309, on 12/31/2008, -1/+10It is a massive amount. I just wish they (and many more torrent sites) had their own tracker, in that respect god bless TPB.
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yep and another start up will do exactly the same. For every one that dies, there're 10 popping up.
- SigmaDraconis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8@kevinfell
Did you ever think that a Mininova user may have liked what he/she downloaded so much that they might actually consider going out and buying the product to support said developers/musicians?
It's a bizarre concept, I know. But it happens, and it's not just being done by Mininova users. - daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yea like downloading a ripped version of a movie allow the user who love it to go out there and buy the whole trilogy with deleted scenes and other extras? Strange concept but that's what radio has been doing for years.
- ocauTMM, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13Welcome to the year 2050, where no one makes software or writes music anymore! All because of piracy!
*rolleyes*
GG. - dredwolff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yep, I'm thinking this announcement makes mininova public enemy #1 for them. Life's gonna suck if they go down like suprnova.
- Risasi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Kevin you are a dumbass.
Me and my company got sued by M$ for piracy. Over the course of a fews years, they blocked some of my co-workers in their own driveway. They harassed our customers. They deposed many of us, and ruined our business name. We were a small family owned business who had been building computers since the early 80's. We spent money in the six digit figure to fight them. They finally gave up after they had spent about $500k in legal bills, and realized there wasn't any money to get. Here's the kicker...we weren't pirating. They found two copies, sold to us by a distributer. That was it.
Prior to that I didn't pirate software. Now, because of what they did to us I download what I want. And I don't have a guilty conscience either. eff these guys....
On the flip side, I downloaded some Russian fitness material. Illegally. I am making very good use of of it, and will be sending a check to Pavel Tsatsouline because I deem it worth something. - pilotss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Who says artists need to be paid millions?
Get off your horse rockstar. - linkcma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If it gets shut down, they'll make hypernova!
- meatball1989, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Mininova FTW!!
- jeffsback2223, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Sure, happy days and all but its size only makes it a bigger target for the RIAA and MPAA.
- Sikes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I hate when the word "barrier" is used instead of the word "achievement." Nothing was actively blocking 2 billion downloads from occurring and therefore is not a "barrier" at all.
http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/barrier - TheLD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The graph is showing exponential growth. Infinity, here we come
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5TY Demonoid and axxo.
- Rast, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5It's those damn Aussies that are pushing the torrents downloaded through the roof for Mininova. TV Shows being their number one choice :)
http://digg.com/television/BitTorrent_Australia_and_TV_Networks - WolfDV, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Woot . . . Lets go for 3 billion boys !!
- yutt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That's exactly what I thought when I read the headline. I then searched the comments hoping someone else had posted about it.
- ricedog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4In response to the prices of software like CS3, if you cant afford it you shouldn't really be using it, professionally.. It is a professional product and so lots of time and money go into making it such. I buy all my software because I have a company but for non professional individuals to use free/copied versions. . well I'm not 100% against that. Photoshop is as popular as it is because so many people can actually use it, without dodgy copies floating around a large chunk of the current users wouldn't be able to use it to get a job, I learned it by using a dodgy copy many years ago enough that i got myself a real copy, and have been through the upgrades ever since.
Don't underestimate what money gets earned from all the big design firms who have lots and lots of legit copies. As a designer, sure I'd be pissed if someone stole my work, or anything else I own, I don't believe the 'art should be free' statement either.. what do you eat for dinner.. air? - idontlikeyou2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4A worthy successor to Suprnova. I am sure MPAA and RIAA are preparing their papers.
- HsoKinees, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2:D i helped! (grabbed the newest Simpsons ep as i missed it on TV +_+ in my opinion -- it wasn't worth the bandwidth)
- anarchistuk, on 08/11/2009, -0/+2I steal music because I would never buy it anyway. They haven't lost revenue because I have no money to give them.
- maglob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The music I listen too was never played on the radio that much when I was younger so I never really got to hear new artists or buy new albums (pre-myspace music days and Internet radio was rubbish back then too). Once I discovered file shares an new access to almost any artist I wanted to here flooded through. I could listen to loads of new music, because of that I was buying an album a week apposed to every few months.
- addiggt, on 07/06/2009, -0/+2Torrents have become huge and not only for the tech-savy. People use them for all types of things, not only tv shows/porn. For example, my teacher distributes a lot extra class stuff via torrents; he's really into it, it's great. Here's another interesting use for torrents for those who might be interested : http://digg.com/tech_news/Using_BitTorrent_to_Generate_Traffic_to_a_Website
- derjames, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2or just simple dust in the space...
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2True artists see money as a by-product, not as a reason to make music/art/novel.
Take Beethoven, Mozart, Bob Dylan, Van Gogh etc. for example. - beachian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1what if i have no idea who the developer is and have no respect for them, sometimes i just need a program to rip wav to mp3 and i don't feel like paying $50. for games that i really appreciate, i'll buy (warcraft 3, half life 2, etc...)
- BrokenVisage, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hazaah!
- AlphonseGreen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1lame graph..
- lordwud, on 10/11/2007, -9/+10"If you really respect a software developer or love an artist, why not pay for their work?"
I do. But I don't consider anyone who demands money for their work an artist. - arenas46, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If I like an album that I torrented, I send a check of 20$ (every time) to the artist. That's more than 50 times the amount that artist would make off of 1 sale of their album in stores.
torrents? np. - sidian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1isnt it dangerous to download illegal software and music via BT? I've been under the impression that the RIAA etc can easily track who takes what. is that the case? thanks for your time
-s - derjames, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1what all the singers should do is to give all their music for free and collect money from every presentation/gig etc... an approach similar to open source software where you share the code and collect money offering professional support...
in the case of a movie or videos is going to be more complicated but something similar can be proposed...
in the case of proprietary software I don't care since I am a open source advocate and haven't use proprietary software in quite some time...
cheers - DangerMouse9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1And those of us flipping burgers will be out of jobs because people will grow their own food.
As a software developer all my applications are used internally.
I was at one time working on an MP3 playlist creator in my free time that would scan the computer for MP3 files, would put them all in a database table, then let you categorize what type of music it was (it even would play the mp3 so you could decide), and then it would put that in another database table. You could then either select the song you wanted, or randomly select X amount of the specified genre/artist. Finally, you could go back and randomly insert one of a specified type/artist after either X songs or X minutes.
If it became popular, I'm sure at least 10% of the people using it would pay for it and I'd be satisfied with that. - shadowspawn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'll tell you what...
I'll download mp3's but as an audiophile you CAN hear the difference between a mp3 and a friggin LP, let alone a CD. Joined stereo channels make such a difference for tunes from Floyd, Yes, Rush, etc., and even NiN and more industrial music, Dope, Chevelle, etc. with the lows and highs they use.
MP3 algorithms really do suck compared to the studio tracks, but only if you are listening on a good system or enjoy the music. If I download ghost rider i'm downloading it to preview it, but i'll still buy it if i want to simply because of the HD-DVD quality.
I think the RIAA/MPAA is starting to get the picture. The people that download music and/or movies as their sole source of media are the people that wouldn't buy it anyway, they aren't the market. People who want to sample things in lower quality/compressed format THEN go buy things... I think that's the target audience of most downloaders in america/uk.
People who can't otherwise afford the movies are just downloading something, using services they paid for.
It's not like anyone who would buy the copy decided not to after they download it.
Downloading doesn't hurt sales, if anything it SPURS sales. Just kicks most ISP's in the ass, that's all. Packet shaping and port throttling on a pay-per-service model is the only solution, but that would drive the pirates down even further underground, and produce fugly copies of copies of copies.
I saw ET on a friend's VCR when it came out in the movies. Didn't stop me from buying the tape and book as soon as I could afford to after yardwork for neighbors. - championchap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@kevinfell (#7161125)
Pay for software I dont use for any comercial use?
Umm, no!
The day I get my first cheque for using Flash I will pay for a copy. Simple.
I think that's respectable too, Adobe have lost no money by me using it.. as I wouldnt have dropped several hundred on what may well have been a passing fancy in animation.
Oh, and as for Music? I download, but if i can find a copy of the album I will buy it. I listen to some pretty obscure music, and it's next to impossible to find the albums on sale, in the UK at least.
Seriously, try finding a copy of TISM - The White Albun (the n is intentional) outside of Australia. - UnoriginalMind, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@sidian (#7163120)
You can always use Peerguardian. That lowers the chances of being caught. I've been a pirate for years, and I've never been caught, more so AFTER they started cracking down. The risk is there, but lower is as much as you can. - ThatEvilGuy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You could've said that much easier:.... they should work for their money.
- Gmasterfluffy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Don't say that to loudly, The MPAA might be listening LOL
- 2shae, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Some things are not really worth paying for...mainly in the music business.
Plus
Paying for all the apps that I have would really add up...It would seriously be over €3000, mainly because of the Adobe CS3 pack and MS Office, movies & music.
Though if I had more than enough money I would definitely buy it all. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Just recently got a letter from NBC sent to my IT administrator for downloading some shows I missed in May because my cable was messed up. How stupid is that?
